AK Ilen Update
Considerable progress on this 56’ auxiliary ketch has been
made at Hegarty’s since the last festival. The deck houses are in
place, she is caulked and puttied, the engine beds are in, the
stern tube is bored, and her engine is beside her ready to be
installed. Painting of her inside is starting shortly, and the outside
of the hull will be given an additional sanding down. Her spars
are already completed by the Ilen Shool, Limerick, so she is close

In the late 1940’s Waterford Harbour Comissioners needed to
replace their aging Pilot ketch, and decided that the best type
ts The

of vessel would be the 50’ Ringer type of MFVra
hull.
Breen”, 52 feet long, was completed by Tyrrels of Arklow in 1951,
and was fitted with twin Gardiner diesels.
She served for 40 years,
and is now owned by
Charlie Crowley whose
family is from the Middle
Calves. She is currently
in O’Donovan’s yard
in Old Court where
she has had her upper
frames replaced.
Lough Fyne Skiff An Cruachan
Loch Fyne skiffs are sailing vessels built in Argyll and they formed
the backbone of the west of Scotland’s vast herring fleet in times
past. An Cruachan, a gaff cutter 120 years old this year, is a fine
example and is just
completing repairs
at Hegarty’s after
suffering damage in
a storm in Crookhave
a few years ago.
It is thought that
only four originals
survive, and three
are reputed to be
in Ireland (though
many replicas have
been built).

TEN YEARS OF TAR & CANVAS IN BALTIMORE!
The last weekend in May has become an annual fixture in the
Naomhóga Chorcaí calendar of events. In the ten years since we
first started participating in The Baltimore wooden boat festival,
we have made many great memories and friends in this fun filled
maritime festival.
Over the years the adventures on and off the water by various
club members form part of the clubs lore. The hand painted
wooden prizes are highly coveted and the normally easy going
club members are transformed into highly competitive lunatics
each time the pilot race starts.
Oars clash and curses fly as the currachs race out to the waiting
mackerel and lobster boats. The pilot urged to leap aboard
and defy gravity and then it’s a temporary interlude while the
boats sail around the course. The race back to the pier inevitably
involves more chaos as the leads changes and the sure favourite
gets snagged or loses an oar in the furore! Bragging rights
bestowed, everyone settles back in to happy mode as we trade
places aboard the local and visiting boats and then continue
the swapping of stories and experiences in the quayside pubs
afterwards.
It’s the mix of madness, fun, shared love of heritage boats and an
appreciation of our sea and coast that binds us to everyone on
this special weekend. The welcome we receive and the generosity
of all involved in organising the festival is what keeps us coming
back year after

THE HISTORIC YACHT ASGARD OF 1916 FAME
John Kearon, Master Shipwright and Historic Vessel Conservator will provide a presentation entitled
’Asgard – Conserving Erskine Childers Historic Yacht’ at the opening of the festival at Baltimore Castle
at 6pm on Friday 27th May. He will provide a concise account of how Erskine Childers yacht Asgard
came to be designed and built by Colin Archer,
the noted Norwegian Naval Architect. He will
discuss the events that caused the vessel and her
owner to become inextricably linked with a most
dramatic period of both European and Irish history.
He will also examine the pathway by which the
decision to have her conserved and not restored
to sail came about and of the key principles
involved. In the main the talk will deal with the
vessel’s conservation and restoration to original
built form in a museum led conservation context
and of the related research, issues and differing
paths to be considered in achieving that goal. Of
particular interest will be the findings in relation to
the vessel’s condition and the various processes
considered and taken in striving to save as much
of the damaged original build structure as possible.
