Welcome from the 2015 Auction Chair
It is with great pleasure that I welcome you, friends of The
Goodtimes Project, to the 12th Annual Goodtimes Wine
Auction! This auction benefits The Goodtimes Project, the
parent organization of Camp Goodtimes. Tonight, we
celebrate Camp Goodtimes’ thirty-first year of camp, and
The Goodtimes Project’s first year as a successful,
independent nonprofit. Your support tonight will enable The
Goodtimes Project to continue to offer Western Washington
and Alaska families affected by childhood cancer a cost-free
week of summer camp. Camp affirms the joys of childhood
often missed by those in treatment, fosters friendships
between children and families who share common
experiences, and instills confidence through a variety of
programs and activities.
What an honor it has been to chair this important event! I
feel very grateful for the extended Camp, Board and Wine
Auction “families” who came together to make our 2015
wine auction possible. The work involved in organizing this
event is immense, and I must take a moment to thank the
volunteers who donated thousands of hours of time
organizing, asking, and planning. To our longtime
supporters, your dedication is inspiring. To our new friends,
we welcome you with open arms and hope you will join us
again next year.
At Camp Goodtimes, children are campers first and patients
second. Every dollar you donate tonight helps us to send
our kids back into the world as more independent, caring,
and capable youth at the end of the
summer.
With my very best wishes,
Laura St. Germain

Grandpa Fred’s Caring Heart
Starting in the 1970s at Seattle Children’s Hospital, Fred
Curtis, who came to be known as Grandpa Fred, would visit
kids almost daily. He realized that many kids being treated
were far from home, and often their parents couldn’t be
there all the time. He didn’t want those kids to feel alone,
so he came up with a plan.
His son John “Chips” Curtis recalled, “My dad lived close to
the hospital and he built a 10 foot tall heart on top of his
house and then outlined it with red lights. He wanted kids to
know that when they were feeling lonely they could look out
of their hospital windows at night, see that shiny red heart
and it would remind them that my dad was there thinking
about them, he was their friend, and that they were loved.”
Grandpa Fred helped found Camp Goodtimes in 1984 and
volunteered there for the rest of his life. When he passed
away eight years ago, “Chips” built a heart in his father’s
honor, brought it to camp and began a new tradition.
During the heart lighting ceremony on the first night of
camp, everyone gathers together to share in a special
moment and are reminded of the very things that Grandpa
Fred first intended all those years ago—that no one should
feel alone in their struggles, that they have friends standing
beside them and that they are loved.
To celebrate this unconditional
love that Grandpa Fred shared
with so many, we have created an
award in his honor.
“The Grandpa Fred Curtis Caring
Heart Award” will be presented
each year to the person or persons
who through their extraordinary
compassion, generosity and love,
are brightening the lives of
children and their families who are
struggling with cancer.

2015 Grandpa Fred Curtis Caring
Heart Award Recipients
We are honored to announce that the 2nd annual Grandpa
Fred Curtis Caring Heart Award is being presented this
evening to Mark and Maggie Sneeringer.
Attending what they thought was going to be a simple wine
dinner in 2004, has become a yearly tradition for Mark and
Maggie. After having the opportunity to speak with some of
the campers in attendance that evening, as well as
volunteers including nurses and doctors, they were hooked.
Mark recalls, “When we heard how passionate these people
were about camp we decided we just had to support it.”
Mark and Maggie have not missed a Wine Auction since. In
fact, they fly 3,000 miles across the country every year just
to be able to attend!
Last year they had the pleasure of visiting camp for the first
time. Mark remembers, “Visiting camp reinforced how
important this is to Maggie and me. It also showed us that
camp isn’t all about the whipped creamed fight and crazy
hair color. We saw the beautiful wide-eyed innocence of kids
that were having too much fun. Considering what all these
kids are going through, and the fact that this week gives
parents a chance to rest and regroup, Maggie and I feel that
our support is money very well spent.”
Congratulations Mark and Maggie on receiving The Grandpa
Fred Curtis Caring Heart Award this evening. Your
unconditional support has been vital to the success and
longevity of Camp Goodtimes. On behalf of all those kids
and families who have benefited from your love and
compassion, we thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

Auctioneer and Master of Ceremonies
Auctioneer: Paul “Mooselips” Dudley
Our auctioneer tonight is Paul “Mooselips” Dudley, who has
volunteered at Camp Goodtimes every year since its inception in
1984. He is a professional photographer and auctioneer. As an
auctioneer he has helped raise millions of dollars for non-profits
including numerous guilds at Seattle Children’s Hospital. As a
photographer he has photographed the rich and famous including
Oprah, Elton John, Bill Gates, Prince Andrew and just last summer
was asked to photograph President Barack Obama during a
Seattle visit. However, he finds the most joy in photographing the
kids and wonderful chaos at Camp Goodtimes for two weeks each
summer.
Paul also earned his Captain’s license back in 1982 and still
skippers boats for Argosy Cruises part-time in the summer,
including two cruises that Argosy donates for camp (like they
have every year since 1989!).
Paul has been very active in the pediatric oncology community
throughout the years. He sits on the board of the Candlelighters
Childhood Cancer Foundation of Western Washington and has
volunteered for numerous events supporting Seattle Children’s
Hospital. Paul firmly believes that compassion changes the world,
and either by encouraging it or sharing it people can be
empowered to do almost anything in this life and affect positive
change wherever their heart leads them.
Master of Ceremonies: Kaitlin “Athena” Dresdner
Our Master of Ceremonies tonight is Kaitlin “Athena” Dresdner, a
former camper and long-time staff member at Camp Goodtimes.
At 16, she was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma and
underwent treatment at Children’s Hospital, where she heard
about camp. She attended camp in the Leader in Training
program for 2 years before joining the staff. It was in this
program that she met her future husband, Nic “Doppler” Ulrich,
who was also a teenage cancer patient. After beating cancer, both
Kaitlin and Nic came back to volunteer at camp, and this summer
will mark their 9th year as staff members. Camp Goodtimes has
been such a big part of their lives that they even got married
there! Kaitlin is an excellent role model and an inspiration to the
kids at camp. She currently works for the Children's Institute for
Learning Differences as an instructional assistant.

Featured Speaker
Gary “Columbus” Yost III
Former Camp Goodtimes Camper, LIT, and Kayak Camper
Gary Yost was a few short weeks from turning 10 years old when
shoulder pain prompted a quick visit to the doctor. An x-ray revealed
a mass in Gary’s chest cavity the size of a softball. He was sent
directly to Seattle Children’s Hospital, where he spent the next nine
months enduring chemotherapy treatments and surgeries. The
removal of the tumor in Gary’s chest required three of his ribs to be
removed, and a prosthetic rib, Gortex and wires put in their place.
Gary finished his last chemotherapy on March 1st, 2008.
Unfortunately, since treatment there have been a few bumps in the
road. Gary developed severe scoliosis, requiring his spine to be
fused. The reconstruction hardware has failed and required repair
and, most recently, Gary has been diagnosed with heart damage
from the chemotherapy drugs. Despite all the post-treatment fallout,
Gary has been cancer free for 7 years and we are truly thankful for
that.
In 2009, Gary and his brother Sam attended Camp Goodtimes for the
first time. They were hooked. Camp quickly became an annual
tradition for the brothers! When Gary was old enough he attended
camp as a Leader in Training. He came home with maturity,
compassion and understanding that he didn’t have when he left.
Then, last summer, Gary transitioned to Kayak Camp. His first words
to his parents when they picked him up were, “I’m SO going next
year!” A kid left for camp, a young man came home. Camp
Goodtimes strikes again! Changing the lives of the kids it touches.
Camp Goodtimes is a safe place where kids get to be kids. Everyone
is exactly the same and totally unique all at the same time. The air is
filled with love and compassion. There is no pity, no judging and no
fear. This is where Gary embraced the art of giving back. Camp
inspired Gary to share his story to make a difference in the lives of
other kids going through what he’s been through. Whether speaking
at fundraisers to raise money for research or to grant a wish, Gary
has bared his heart and soul to thousands of people, imploring them
to recognize the extreme need to support organizations like The
Goodtimes Project that make a difference in the lives of children
diagnosed with cancer.
What’s next? Gary is looking forward to graduation, Kayak Camp,
attending college and becoming a volunteer for Camp Goodtimes, of
course!
Written by Paula Yost, Gary’s mom.
