Prepare to be
the leaders of tomorrow.
Thank you for investing
in the students
of St. Mary’s Ryken.
From the President
Dear Friends,
There is no question that families make a
sacrifice to send their students to Catholic
school. And, there is no doubt of the
powerful legacy of Catholic education in
Southern Maryland and the contribution
so many of our graduates have made in
their communities. It is exciting as an
educator to be working and helping to
form the next generation of leaders.
As I begin my 25th year of service to St.
Mary’s Ryken, I am proud to be part of a
Catholic community whose students take
their gifts and achieve the extraordinary. The graduating class of
2010 demonstrated that a Xaverian, Catholic school community
understands the commitment to serving their brothers and sisters.
These students performed over 14,000 hours of service. Their
academic successes led the class to receive almost $9 million in
scholarships to the distinguished universities and colleges to
which they were accepted.
It is by working together as a Catholic community that our
students are able to achieve these successes. The gifts and support
you have provided to the St. Mary’s Ryken Fund and to the
school’s endowments have helped us maintain a balanced budget,
while growing our programs and enhancing the experience
that all students receive on their journey of faith and academic
growth.
But, your gifts are only a part of what we need. Just like our
students, I encourage you to offer your time. Become an active
member of the St. Mary’s Ryken community by volunteering. A
description of volunteer opportunities is posted on our website at
www.smrhs.org/volunteer.
As we begin this 30th year of St. Mary’s Ryken together, let us
ask God to bestow His blessing on our school community.
Sincerely,
Mary Joy Hurlburt

2009-2010 Annual Report 3
Office of Advancement
Dear Friends,
Looking back over 2010, I can’t find enough words to describe the pride I have for this amazing school. Our
faculty and our community are top notch. Every day, through their drive and determination, young men and
women develop into the future leaders of our families, our churches and our communities.
• Mark Ragland ’10 won a spot at the Intel International Science & Engineering Fair in California after
winning at the county and regional levels.
• Mason Short, Class of 2011, won the individual title in the WCAC golf championship.
• The SMR Mock Trial team made it to the Final Four of the Maryland State Bar Association High School
Mock Trial Competition in Annapolis.
• The boys’ basketball team broke three school records and placed in the WCAC quarterfinals.
• Joan Stevens received the Golden Apple Award for excellence in teaching from the Archdiocese of
Washington (ADW).
These successes were a direct result of your support and others like you in the community. Your support to the
St. Mary’s Ryken Fund was instrumental in providing need-based and merit-based scholarships, in ensuring our
faculty received continuing education opportunities, and in creating special academic programs such as STEM,
X-PAX and the Ryken Program.
The success of our students and our school is a team effort. This Annual Report celebrates our team including
our donors who make these successes possible. The Advancement Office, along with the students, faculty and
administration, wish to express our gratitude to all of you who have joined this team. With the guidance of
our Board of Directors, each day we make strides toward our vision of being one of the best Catholic, collegepreparatory schools on the East Coast. With each gift, large or small, we are leading the way. Please know that
SMR is a most worthy recipient of your philanthropy, and that your gifts have been invested wisely and stewarded
properly.
As we set out on the 2011 school year, we face many challenges and many rewards. Yet, we find comfort knowing
that we have been blessed with an incredible team of faculty and administrators, enthusiastic students, and caring
alumni, parents and friends to help us lead the way to another successful year.
Sincerely,
K. Leanne Sanders

SMR STEM 100
SMR STEM 100 means that 100% of St. Mary’s Ryken
students can participate in the STEM enrichment
programs offered here at SMR.
During the 2009-10 academic year, several classes got a chance to visit a few of the facilities at the Naval Air Station Patuxent
River: the honors conceptual physics class saw the horizontal accelerator in action at the Crash Simulation Laboratory (above
left photo) and the honors physics class toured the sound labs.
The “Girls Who Dare to be Geeks” club hosted guest speakers from the base on a variety of topics including Theresa Shafer and
Carol Cooper, who spoke on underwater acoustics, buoyancy and sound propagation; and Dr. Linda Mullen (above right photo),
who spoke on light refraction.
The anatomy class hosted Dr. Jerri Tribble, who directed the students in their dissections of a human eye and heart in the SMR
lab.
Knight Pride
96% of the Class of 2010 took the SAT - more than twice the
national average. SMR has the highest average test scores

and Catholic education.
The Sean Brady Memorial Scholarship Fund
Established in 1992 by Thomas Brady and Eileen Valentine

of 1992, who demonstrated a love of school, family and
church. Scholarships are awarded to incoming students who
demonstrate academic achievement and participation in
extracurricular activities.

to students from St. Mary’s County. Awards are based on both
academic merit and financial need.

graduate of St. Mary’s Academy. The fund provides financial
assistance to two students enrolling as freshmen.
The Margaret Powers Ellis Scholarship

generous in his financial assistance for students. Students must
demonstrate both academic achievement and financial need.
The Joseph Marion Gough Endowment
Throughout his lifetime, Mr. Gough, a 1945 St. Mary’s
Academy graduate and father of two alumnae, personified
commitment to Catholic education and citizenship in St. Mary’s
County. This fund, established by his estate in 2006, will
provide assistance for those students who desire a St. Mary’s
Ryken education and have financial need.
The GPG Scholarship Fund
Created in 2007 by four recent graduates: two brothers and two
of their classmates, who felt very fortunate that their parents
sacrificed to give them the benefit of a Catholic education. The

would otherwise be unable to afford St. Mary’s Ryken. The
recipient will be academically talented and will carry himself or
herself with dignity in all academic pursuits and extracurricular
activities.
The George and Eleanor Raley Scholarship Fund
Established in 2004 by the Raley family in honor their parents,
George and Eleanor Alvey Raley. Mr. and Mrs. Raley were
strong advocates for Catholic education, sending all six of their

of St. Mary’s Academy, and Mr. Raley served as supervisor of
