Braun, Jr. 2013-2014 BOARD OF TRUSTEES FROM OUR ARTISTIC DIRECTOR The 2013-2014 season welcomed Pacific Northwest Ballet’s first Artist in Residence. What a coup it was for us to land the likes of Twyla Tharp. Twyla worked with virtually every department at PNB, from Marketing to Development, creating a work for the Company and offering technique classes for our School. She schmoozed and signed and lectured and laughed with everyone in our extended family. Three weeks of Treefrog classes (if you don't know, don't ask), one lecture-demonstration, three fundraising events—including one impassioned speech at First Look—two dozen showings, three ballets remounted—one for the School, and two for the Company—plus a world premiere which attracted national attention. By the time the curtain descended on opening night, we found ourselves released from the claws of a recession and sent dancing up the aisles to the sweet rhythms of Allan Toussaint. And it was only September. November re-introduced us to the genius of Jiri Kylian and to the infinite talents of a newcomer named Crystal Pite. Our beloved Nutcracker regained its box office clout this past December, followed by the triumphant return of Ronald Hynd’s The Sleeping Beauty. A strong mixed rep with a world premiere by Alejandro Cerrudo preceded the welcome return of George Balanchine’s A Midsummer Night's Dream, with 28 role debuts for our dancers. Much of the year was devoted to developing and creating all new scenery and costumes for Giselle, with fresh original designs by Jérôme Kaplan. The extraordinary work of our costume and scenic shops was on full and proud display in June. It takes more than artists to unveil such a creation and our development department, in conjunction with board leadership, deserves recognition for raising funds to make these exquisite designs a reality. Our year didn’t end when the curtain descended on the final heartfelt tribute to beloved our ballerina Kaori Nakamura. Five days later, six premieres performed by our Professional Division students made for an exciting and innovative NEXT STEP, and close to 400 kids filled the McCaw Hall stage in a spectacular School Performance, which concluded with the dramatic premiere of Kyle Davis's epic Sylvia and the robust sounds of the Seattle Youth Symphony Orchestra. Not all of the news of the 2013 -2014 season happened onstage, with a thorough search for a replacement for retiring Executive Director D. David Brown taking place throughout the year. David brought stability and sound financial stewardship to our Institution through some truly challenging times. The search committee, under the competent leadership of Aya Hamilton, met regularly to consider some two dozen wellqualified candidates. I am thrilled with the selection of Ellen Walker, our former Director of Marketing and Communications. Ellen and I are a team and one that is wholly committed to the future of this institution. She brings wisdom, insight and a healthy dash of humor to our 8 company. With the support of a committed and extensive team, she will help PNB continue to thrive. Now our attention turns to finding the right new home for the Francia Russell Center and to ensuring financial stability through endowment, planned giving, New Works funding and consistently strong annual giving. We are focused on the final year of our much-loved Stowell & Sendak Nutcracker, which has served us so well over the past 31 years and which has brought more new audiences through our doors than anything else we have ever done. We are also looking to make our new Nutcracker another beloved Northwest tradition. We recognize the excellence of our outreach programs, our lecture offerings, and our School as additional entry points for our community and future audiences. We recognize a new national reputation for our orchestra, our artists, our staff and our commissions, and we realize the importance of national and international touring. We continue on the path of excellence that PNB has always followed, and we follow it with both practicality and passion. Peter Boal Artistic Director FROM OUR EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR I’m so happy to be taking the reigns as PNB’s new executive director in the 2014-2015 season. As you all know, I have a very tough act to follow in our outgoing director D. David Brown. David served as Executive Director of PNB for fourteen years and guided the organization with a very steady hand and a wealth of experience. I was hired in January 2014, which meant that David and I had six months to transition. I had been PNB’s Director of Marketing and Communications for 11 years, so I had a good start on understanding the organization, but that time with David was an extraordinary opportunity to learn from a highly respected leader in our field. Peter Boal, too, has been a tremendous source of wisdom and perspective as I’ve made this transition. Thanks so much, Peter. The PNB staff too has been extraordinarily supportive – we are so lucky in each and every one of them. fulfilled by passage of the Cultural Access Washington legislation and public vote, which will create a sustainable public funding source for the region’s arts, science and heritage organizations. It won’t surprise you that D. David Brown is still working diligently toward passage of Cultural Access, and is determined to get it passed in 2015. On the development side of our organization, we continue to fortify our dedicated board of trustees with the addition of new members. During the 2013-2014 season, under Gail James’ dynamic leadership, 6 new governing board trustees joined us and we welcomed four new advisory board members. In other fundraising news, Katherine Cardinal and her team reached several important milestones: another great First Look event with nearly $240K raised during a rousing Raise the Paddle; achievement of an ambitious $1.4M New Works goal in support of I’ve had other sources of inspiration and edification in my time at PNB, and Aya Hamilton has been Giselle, three PNB premieres and two world premieres, and the spectacular launch of our fundraising campaign for the new Nutcracker. By the end of FY14, Katherine and her team had one of the most important. In her roles as board chair and board president, Aya has always raised more than $2 million toward the new production, which will premiere in December 2015. approached our work with an astute financial eye, but she brings something else too, which is a very genuine passion for ballet and deep affection for our dancers. Trust me, they notice this. Aya, thank you for leading our board with such integrity and energy – you have changed PNB for One of the things I’ve enjoyed most since accepting the position of executive director has been a series of coffee meetings that incoming Chair Dave Hadley and I had with governing board and the better and we’re all truly grateful for your time, leadership and that you care so deeply about advisory board members. I learned so much from these conversations and know that they’ll guide what we do here every day. and Inform my tenure here at PNB in important ways. Each season at PNB is usually marked by at least one really transformative project that advances I have known several of you, our PNB supporters, for years but look forward to getting to know our art form and our company. During the 2013-2014 Season, we had three: Twyla Tharp’s every one of you and I thank you for your support of PNB. You make it possible for us to achieve Waiting at the Station, Crystal Pite’s Emergence and, of course, Jérôme Kaplan’s new scenery and costume designs for Giselle. Projects like this hit that perfect sweet spot of artistic innovation, our goals, create a thriving business and get beautiful performances onstage. Thank you. audience acclaim and great revenue results and they’re vitally important to institutions like ours. Speaking of great revenue results, we definitively emerged from the recession in the second half of 2013 with overachievement on AIR TWYLA, KYLIAN + PITE and the 30th Anniversary of Nutcracker, which earned its highest revenue in five years. And then came January, and profound construction-related traffic congestion on Mercer Street. Word of mouth for our spring programs was excellent, but construction did keep some patrons away in the second half of our season and had an impact on ticket revenue. In the category of variables beyond our control, we also learned that we would be losing our Eastside School, the Francia Russell Center, due to the placement of the Eastlink Light Rail and eminent domain. We are spending a great deal of time now exploring relocation options for the 600 students that we serve on the Eastside. We’re incredibly proud of our PNB School and want to provide the best possible venues for our young dancers and gifted faculty. Educational programming, including PNB School, is one of the four major objectives of our strategic plan, which was developed by David, the board and staff in 2013. Our objectives are building financial stability, expanding our repertoire and educational programming, strengthening PNB’s fundraising capacity, and strengthening PNB’s infrastructure. Part of the first objective continues to be our 50th Anniversary Campaign to substantially increase endowment assets and create sustainable funds for artistic projects. This objective would also be 99 Ellen Walker Executive Director Principal Rachel Foster and Soloist William Lin-Yee in Twyla Tharp’s Nine Sinatra Songs. Photo © Angela Sterling. FROM OUR CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD The 2013-2014 season marked our company’s 41st year in existence! It also marked Peter Boal’s 9th season as PNB’s artistic director and David Brown’s 14th and final year as PNB’s executive director. The year commenced with Peter Boal executing a new six-year contract as our Artistic Director and ended with a heartfelt outpouring of appreciation for D. David Brown’s long tenure as PNB’s executive director. My heartfelt thanks goes to the PNB Personnel Committee which formed the basis of the Search Committee for PNB’s new executive director, a project the committee devoted endless hours to throughout much of the year. The board was thrilled to announce in January, the selection of Ellen Walker as PNB’s incoming Executive Director. For the past 11 years, Ellen has been PNB’s Director of Marketing and Communications, and has delivered significant contributions through marketing campaigns that fed right through to the box office. We already know that Ellen is capable of great things and we look forward to her partnership with Peter, the board, and our donors. And while leadership and culture set the tone for an organization, it is impossible to talk about PNB without recognizing and appreciating our 250+ employees that touch our organization at some level throughout the year. For without them, the strategy the board has set, and the artistic program Peter has orchestrated, would never be realized. While I will let Peter Boal speak to the artistic successes of the year, as well as the PNB School, I can’t help but to take a moment to reimagine Twyla Tharp’s world premiere, Waiting at the Station; those new Giselle sets and costumes; the Encore performance in which we simultaneously cried and applauded through Kaori Nakamura’s final ballets; or Kyle Davis’s restaging of Sylvia for the Professional Division’s graduation school performance. It was a thrill to be in the house for each of these spectacular moments. Though 2013-2014 had its ups and downs, the organization ended the 2014 fiscal year with a modest surplus of $41,000, which was achieved through the transfer of $410,000 from the Association’s financial stabilization fund. There remains $61,000 in our stabilization fund and the rebuilding of cash reserves is now a very serious priority. The PNB Foundation now stands at almost $15M through both strong investment performance and $236,000 in new gifts received. 10 10 As you will hear from Peter and Ellen, great things are in store for our 2014-2015 and 2015-2016 seasons. Not only do we anticipate exciting new ballets but challenging infrastructure opportunities lie ahead as well. But if you know us well, you also know that we are up for the challenge. As I conclude my Chairmanship role at PNB, I want to thank my fellow trustees, all of the staff, our artists and our donors for the opportunity to serve our community and this art form. You are too numerous to mention but you have touched my life in very significant ways and your friendship will be forever valued. I am looking forward to turning over the reins to David Hadley and Joan Fitzmaurice. I know that they are excited to roll up their sleeves and take on these important roles. On behalf of all of the board, I would like to thank you for supporting PNB. You, our audience and supporters, inspire us to do what, looking ahead, can feel daunting at times. But then the curtain goes up, the orchestra begins, the dancers appear, and we go to that special place that only dance can take us all over again. That is what great ballet does for all of us. Aya S. Hamilton Chairman, PNB Board of Trustees FROM OUR PRESIDENT OF THE BOARD Dear Friends, The 2013-2014 PNB season showcased a Company that has earned its stellar reputation through its consistent classical prowess and dynamic new works. Peter Boal’s 9th season as Artistic Director featured two world premieres, Waiting at the Station by the incomparable Twyla Tharp and Memory Glow, a creation from rising star Alejandro Cerrudo. This season also featured some of our audience’s favorite timeless classical ballets, with brilliant repertory performances of Ronald Hynd’s The Sleeping Beauty and George Balanchine’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream. PNB also presented outstanding mixed repertory programs featuring the PNB premieres of Jiri Kylian’s Forgotten Land and Crystal Pite’s Emergence, alongside returning works such as Susan Stroman’s TAKE FIVE…More or Less, Susan Marshall’s Kiss, and Molissa Fenley’s State of Darkness. PNB plays an essential role in the Seattle performing arts community through the efforts of PNB School and PNB’s Community Education programs. During the 2013-2014 season, 1,025 students attended classes and 470 of those students participated in the annual school performance at Marion Oliver McCaw Hall. Through the DISCOVER DANCE program, PNB was able to reach out to 11 schools and give children the wonderful experience of creating and performing their own work. The life changing impact these programs have on young people is invaluable, and is one of the most rewarding experiences for all of those at PNB who dedicate their time to developing the performing arts in our schools. The Board of Trustees has a great sense of pride in the progress the Ballet made this season achieving our strategic goals. The first goal, mentioned earlier, was to create new scenery and costumes for our production of Giselle, a challenge that was met by extraordinary enthusiasm from PNB donors. Our second goal was to ensure our operating expenses are fully covered. You, our wonderful patrons assist us with your attendance at the ballet whether by renewing your season subscription or being loyal single ticket buyers. Ticket sales account for only 70% of what it costs to do all of the great work you see at PNB. By making a gift, you help support the creation and development of world-class dance and help provide educational outreach programs to the Seattle area. Thank you for your support and participation. Sincerely, David Hadley President, Board of Trustees PNB is among the best ballet companies in the world and nothing makes our extraordinary dancers feel more rewarded than your loyalty to their work. With the return of Giselle in June 2014, PNB built new scenery and costumes for the production, designed by trend-setting French designer Jérôme Kaplan. With a total build cost of $750,000, this exciting project was only possible with the generous support of PNB donors. Going forward, PNB needs your generosity more than ever to maintain the greatness that enhances and reflects so well on our community. 11 11 Soloist Kylee Kitchens in George Balanchine’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Trafton and Arlene A. Wright. PNB's 2011 world premiere staging of Giselle was made possible by Patty Edwards and an anonymous donor. PNB also thanks Dan & Pam Baty, Jeffrey & Susan Brotman and Patty Edwards for their leadership support in underwriting new scenery and costumes for Giselle in 2014. New Design: Giselle In 2011, Pacific Northwest Ballet premiered a new production of Giselle whose staging was based on three historic sources: a heavily annotated 1842 Parisian rehearsal score (répétiteur), a recently rediscovered complete notation of the ballet as it was likely performed in Paris in the 1860s, and the now-famous Stepanov choreographic notation of the ballet made circa 1899-1903 in St. Petersburg, Russia. PNB Artistic Director Peter Boal worked with dance historians Marian Smith (French sources) and Doug Fullington (Russian sources) to revive the ballet, overseeing the entire production, providing choreography at several points where none survived, and also taking into account the rich performance history of Giselle, the greatest of the Romantic-era ballets. Having presented Giselle using rented scenery and costumes in 2011, Peter Boal has commissioned French designer Jérôme Kaplan to create new scenery and costumes for this 2014 revival. Kaplan is familiar to Boal and the PNB audience through his contemporary costume designs for Jean-Christophe Maillot’s Roméo et Juliette and his traditional-with-a-twist scenic and costume designs for Alexei Ratmansky’s Don Quixote. In designing Giselle, Kaplan has followed the approach of the revival team and researched historic sources, beginning with the wood engravings of various scenes from the ballet that were published in Les Beautés de l’Opéra in 1845. The scenic designs were also informed by the stage plots included in the 1860s notation of Giselle by Henri Justamant as well as Alexandre Benois’ classic designs for the Paris Opéra made in 1924. In designing the costumes, Kaplan made the decisive choice to set the ballet in the period in which it was created, the mid-1800s. This especially impacted the designs for the aristocratic hunting party in Act I, which in many productions, including the original, were dressed in faux- medieval garb. Now the aristocracy resembles a classic hunting party, complete with red jackets for the gentlemen and veiled top hats for the ladies. Responding to an interviewer, Kaplan said, “When you start to think about Giselle, what part is the most beautiful and interesting visually? Definitely, the ‘white’ second act. The first act is in ‘Prince Charming’ style, and it’s very ‘ballet’ in the stereotypical way. It made sense to set it in this time period, because during the 19th century, the medieval look was quite in fashion. But now, it’s really out of fashion. That’s why I proposed to Peter Boal the idea to re-imagine the first act in ‘hunting foxes’ style, with the beautiful equestrian dresses and gorgeous red hunting jackets, and he enjoyed immediately the idea. I didn’t change anything in the Giselle story, but re-set it in the real time in which it was choreographed, the late-19th century.” overseen by Technical Director Norbert Herriges and Costume Shop Manager Larae Theige Hascall. Draper Mark Zappone served as Costume Design Assistant to Kaplan and more than fifty artists were engaged for the build. Summing up the process, Kaplan said, “In a way, when you re-design a historical ballet as Giselle, you only need to read, open your ears, and be “serious” in the work. The ballet will be revealed to you as a photograph in the laboratory—slowly and magically. …I would like to say that people don’t realize how classical ballet is important and part of our cultural heritage, exactly like Noh and Kabuki for the Japanese. We need to keep it alive and fight to transfer it to the younger generation. I only try to help to refresh it slightly, with all the respect you could have for a beautiful monument.” - Doug Fullington Kaplan was also inspired by the colorful and evocative work of Ferdinand Georg Waldmüller, an Austrian painter of the Biedermeier era. Giselle’s Act I costume, however, is modeled on the original worn by ballerina Carlotta Grisi in 1841—a brown bodice with a yellow skirt—and Myrtha’s costume is based on the lithograph of the role’s creator, Adèle Dumilâtre. The entire build was done in PNB’s shops—the scenic shop in Fremont and the costume shop at the Phelps Center, Jérôme Kaplan and PNB Costume Shop Design Assistant Mark Zappone with a Peasant pas de deux costume. AUDIENCE EDUCATION Before the Ballet: Pre-Performance Lectures Pre-Performance Lectures continued in 2013-2014, given by Education Programs Manager Doug Fullington. Lectures were offered before most regular season performance and served approximately 3,500 patrons. Post-Performance Q&A Post-Performance Q&A sessions continued in 2013-2014, led by Artistic Director Peter Boal and sometimes by Ballet Master Otto Neubert. Sessions were offered after every regular season performance, and served approximately 5,500 patrons. Friday Previews Friday Previews continued in 2013-2014. Instituted by Artistic Director Peter Boal, Friday Previews is a series of public previews of upcoming ballets in informal, open rehearsal settings. Four hour-long events were offered in Studio C at the Phelps Center. Serving approximately 860 patrons, most Friday Previews sold out in advance and continued to prove popular with audience members of all ages. PNB Lecture Series Six PNB Lecture Series events were offered during the hour before dress rehearsal, during which guest choreographers and stagers were interviewed by Doug Fullington or Peter Boal. Approximately 1,400 patrons were served. Ballet Previews Ballet Previews are sponsored by the Seattle Public Library and presented by Doug Fullington. Six hour-long noontime events were offered at the Central Seattle Public Library, serving approximately 450 patrons. Lecture-Demonstrations & Seminars Nine studio presentations, lecture-demonstrations, and seminars were offered during the 2013-2014 season. Vail International Dance Festival Preview Studio Presentation on Tuesday, July 23 at the Phelps Center, Studio C. 2013 marked PNB’s fourth visit to the acclaimed Vail International Dance Festival in Vail, Colorado. This year, PNB took seven ballets by George Balanchine (Agon, Apollo, Concerto Barocco, and Serenade), Kent Stowell (Swan Lake Act II), and Christopher Wheeldon (After the Rain pas de deux and Tide Harmonic). Excerpts from a selection of these works were featured in this studio preview rehearsal. Twyla Tharp On Stage Lecture-Demonstration on Wednesday, September 25 at McCaw Hall. Iconic choreographer Twyla Tharp, PNB’s first Artist-in-Residence, lectured and rehearsed the Company onstage at McCaw Hall in Waiting at the Station, her latest creation for PNB. Set to a newly crafted score by legendary jazz artist Allen Toussaint, Ms. Tharp’s new work exemplifies the genius and wit that has made her an American dance legend. Remembering a Prince: A PNB Tribute to Rudolf Nureyev Seminar on Saturday, November 2 at the Phelps Center, Jane Davis Board Room. Artistic Director Peter Boal was joined by guests Elaine Bauer (Boston Ballet), Stephanie Saland (New York City Ballet), and Roslyn Anderson (Australian Ballet), who knew and danced with ballet icon Rudolf Nureyev (1938-1993) in remembering his artistic legacy through anecdotes, film, and images. Nureyev’s profound love of ballet is still impacting dance today, as evidenced by PNB’s recent receipt of the The Rudolf Nureyev Prize for New Dance, awarded by The Joyce Theater Foundation in 2012. Moderated by dance writer Leslie Holleran. Coaching The Sleeping Beauty Studio Presentation on Thursday, January 16 at the Phelps Center, Studio C. The role of Princess Aurora in The Sleeping Beauty is one of ballet’s most challenging and rewarding. From the Rose Adagio to the Vision scene to the Wedding pas de deux, the ballerina must portray nobility coming of age within the language of the danse d’ecole. Artistic Director Peter Boal worked with PNB’s Auroras in this studio coaching session of the celebrated ballet. Guggenheim “Works and Process” Preview: Petipa Exotique Studio Presentation on Thursday, February 20 at the Phelps Center, Studio C. PNB returned to the Guggenheim Museum’s “Works and Process” series with “Petipa Exotique,” a program of dances by legendary French ballet master Marius Petipa whose stories are set in what for 19th-century European audiences would have been exotic locales. Revived from century old dance notation, excerpts from Petipa’s famed La Bayadère (India) and Le Roi Candaule (Lydia), as well as his staging of the swashbuckler Le Corsaire (Turkey), were presented in this studio preview by PNB dancers accompanied by two violinists in the traditional rehearsal medium of 19th-century St. Petersburg. Featuring Michael Jinsoo Lim and Brittany Boulding, Concertmaster and Associate Concertmaster, respectively, of the PNB Orchestra. 22 22 All about Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring Seminar on Saturday, March 1 at the Phelps Center, Jane Davis Board Room. Fresh off its hundredth birthday, Stravinsky’s notorious Rite of Spring continues to fascinate audiences around the world. Attendees learned about the riotous Paris premiere of this great work and how it has inspired dozens of subsequent productions, watched excerpts from the 1987 reconstruction of the original for the Joffrey Ballet, and chatted with PNB dancers who performed Molissa Fenley’s solo interpretation, State of Darkness, on PNB’s DIRECTOR’S CHOICE program. A Midsummer Night’s Dream for the Pacific Northwest Seminar on Saturday, April 5 at the Phelps Center, Jane Davis Board Room. PNB’s 1997 production of George Balanchine’s brilliant A Midsummer Night’s Dream was the first re-design of a full-length Balanchine ballet authorized by the George Balanchine Trust. Designed by Martin Pakledinaz and inspired by Northwest flora and fauna, the production became a calling card for PNB, which toured it to Edinburgh, Istanbul, and Hong Kong, as well as London, where it was filmed by the BBC in 1998. Attendees heard from artists involved in building Midsummer, viewed a display of costumes, scenic designs and models, and watched excerpts from the award-winning DVD. 23 Pacific Northwest Ballet at the Vail International Dance Festival 2013.
