Antioxidants and Health
Oxidation is a chemical reaction that transfers electrons from a substance to an oxidizing agent. Oxidation
reactions can produce free radicals; in turn, these radicals can start chain reactions that damage cells.
Oxidative stress may be an important part of many human diseases; consequently, the use of antioxidants
in pharmacology is intensively studied. However, it is still unknown whether oxidative stress is the cause
or the consequence of disease.
An antioxidant is capable of inhibiting the oxidation of other molecules. Antioxidants themselves
become oxidized, terminating chain reactions by removing free radical intermediates and inhibiting
other oxidation reactions. Although oxidation reactions are crucial for life, they can also be damaging;
hence, plants and animals maintain complex systems with multiple types of antioxidants such as
glutathione, vitamin C, and vitamin E as well as enzymes such as catalase, superoxide dismutase and
various peroxidases.
Low levels of antioxidants, or inhibition of the antioxidant
enzymes, can cause oxidative stress and may damage or kill
cells. On the other hand, good antioxidants can:
Reduce oxidation and free radical damage;
Prevent cell damage and protect cellular function;
Improve immune system function and the body’s
ability to repair damage.
Aging and age-related conditions are often directly related
to the body’s inability to repair damage it sustains on a
continuous basis. As one ages, the cumulative effect of this
damage cannot be overcome by the body’s normal repair
processes. Reducing superoxide levels in the body through
free radical reduction is one approach that can be used
