Adding It All Up in Atlanta
One big family reunion—that’s what CAMEX always feels like
to me. There’s no doubt that we are all privileged to be part
of such a sharing and caring industry.
Months of preparation go into creating the Connect2One
experience at CAMEX and here are just a few facts and
figures.

Apparel Basics
On the C2O Education Day, Robb Faust once again
entertained supply buyers. Our apparel sessions with
Michelle Johnson were once again accented by presentations
from our top vendor partners. And, who didn’t love this
year’s awesome goody bag, compliments of High Sierra with
goodies from 34 vendors, including our fabulous t-shirt from
Ouray!
But, the real excitement this year was seeing Connect2One
buyers unite to wield some real purchasing power. With
commitments for 196,000 Top Flight notebooks, these buyers
will be able to offer tremendous savings to their students this
fall, while making good margin at the same time.
And, in apparel basics, C2O buyers united with ICBA buyers
to generate over 590,000 garments from partners MV Sport,
Russell Athletic Jerzees, alphabroder and The Game.
Check your inbox this month to complete our Atlanta survey
to give us feedback on what more we can do to make it a
great CAMEX in Houston in 2016.

New Vendors for 2015
Looking for men’s silk ties? Then
look no further! Global Neckwear
Marketing offers 7 design options
for customizing your school logo on
silk ties. Bowties are very popular
right now and Global offers 4
different designs. From traditional
stripes to a more contemporary
all-over optical design, your school
logo has never looked so good. Minimums are only 48
pieces per style and prices on ties range from $14-$22
dollars for C2O stores. Global also offers silk suspenders,
cummerbunds and vests for weddings and other special
occasions. Other accessories include gift boxes, knitted
ties, pocket squares, scarves, belts, wallets and wedding
garters.
If you’re looking for Made in
the USA gifts and souvenirs,
then take a look at JayMac
Sports Products. All JayMac
products are manufactured
and decorated in the
USA. JayMac offers a unique assortment of gifts and
souvenirs decorated using the sublimation process. This
process reduces the minimum to just 1 piece per style
and includes as many imprint colors as you need. Key
categories include car, house and garden flags, huggers,
coozies, drink ware, automotive accessories, signs
and home décor. Bright, bold contemporary graphics
including camo, paisley, argyle, greek key, polka dot and
chevron designs give this line a distinctive look.
The sales of performance garments
continue to grow in college
bookstores with double digit growth
expected for the 8th straight year.
More customers may be looking for
performance styles but some may not
be willing to pay the high retail prices
usually associated with performance
garments. That’s where Badger
Sportswear comes in – they offer high quality, on-trend
performance styles that are value priced. Badger offers
a full assortment of CORE basics plus several athletically
inspired collections of moisture wicking tees, crews,
hoods, jackets, shorts and pants. Collections include
“Force” which features sublimated camo garments and
“Drive” which features athletic color blocking and piping.
There are styles for everyone including men, women and
children.

ICS Rep of the Year
Congratulations to John Mantel, this year’s
recipient of the ICS 2014 Rep of the Year
Award. This makes the third time for John,
having also earned the honor in 2008 and 2011.
John has 20 years of experience in the college
bookstore business (7 with ICS) and serves
the Dakotas, Colorado and his home state of
Minnesota. John joins two other ICS reps who
have won this award three or more times: Tom
Washburn (also 3 times) and Maria Herring (an
impressive 6 times). Congratulations to all!
ICS also recently recognized two veteran sales reps upon their
retirements. Mike Longman was an ICS rep for 17 years and served
Utah, Wyoming, Montana and southern Idaho. Taking over for Mike is
Gary Furlong who is expanding his ICS territory of Nevada and northern
California. Ray deGravelle was an ICS rep for 10 years and served
Louisiana and Mississippi. Taking over for Ray is Philip Martin who is
happy to be returning to ICS. Thanks to Mike and Ray and best wishes
to Gary and Philip!

Staying Safe & Secure On Campus
With the growing awareness of safety concerns on colleges and
universities, campus communities are rising to the challenge of
creating safe and secure environments. How can your store help
support these efforts?
Offer a selection of safety and security products. It is
important to note that some products may be restricted or
banned by the state, city, or school. Discuss with campus security
the laws, rules and regulations related to items you are thinking
of bringing into your store – especially pepper spray.
Pepper spray is among the most popular and effective items
for personal safety. Pepper spray contains oleoresin capsicum,
a reddish-orange, oily liquid extracted from Cayenne pepper.
Pepper spray canisters are small and handy, fitting perfectly into
a purse or pocket. It is easy to use; with effects that may include
short-term vision impairment, sneezing, and coughing, an escape
can be made.
Besides pepper spray, the most popular dorm room safety items
are:
1. Diversion Safes –disguised to look like everyday objects
2. Alarms –for door/window intrusion, or user-activated
3. Locks – including padlocks, combination locks, door
braces
4. Whistles
5. Lights – including flashlights & flashing lights
1
At CAMEX, NACSCORP introduced a selection of 60 Dorm
& Personal Safety SKUs for purchase individually or as
assortments in one or two 2’ sections. Call your NACSCORP rep at
800-321-3883 for more details.
Here are more suggestions for a safety-oriented store:
•
•
•
Stock books such as “How to Be Safe” ($15.99) or
“Protect Yourself!: How to Stay Safe in an Unsafe World”
($21.95)
2
3
Sponsor or participate in a campus event such as a
safety awareness day featuring product demos and/or
instruction by school security staff
Offer to call escorts for shoppers and store staff who are
leaving to walk alone in the evening
Once you get started, you’ll find there’s almost no end to the
things you can do to help improve the safety of your customers
and all who are on your campus!
