Commodore’s Report
By David Bray
As everyone is aware by now we have a new
commodore. That would be me. A little earlier than I
expected, but that’s OK. I want to first thank Phil for all the
time and effort he has given the club over the years. It
takes courage to make the decision to step down when
one knows it’s best for them and the club. He explained
his reasons in his letter to the membership and it needs
no further explanation.
The club by-laws cover this occurrence and we have past
experience to draw from. At the July, meeting I will tender
my resignation as a board member because the
commodore does not have a vote except to break a tie.
Margaret McGill is heading a committee to find a
replacement the board can vote on to fill my term this
year and they are looking for a vice commodore as well.
It’s a smooth transition thanks to previous boards who
wrote the by-laws.
I want to sincerely thank everyone who has called and
sent e-mails offering their help in any way. The support is
very much appreciated.
Because I will be out of the country on the day of the
scheduled July meeting, I have rescheduled it for July 18th
at 8:30. Enough board members have responded that
there will be a quorum.
We will be having a special membership meeting on
Saturday July 25 at 10:00 am, at the clubhouse to discuss
and vote on the possible expenditure of funds to relocate
our B-dock should the lake level dictate. This will be a
very important meeting to get approval from the
membership in advance, should we have to make a move
later this year. Hopefully it will rain with enough gusto to
get some water in the lake and we won’t have to do it this
year. A letter detailing the meeting will be sent by the end
of June.
I look forward to serving as commodore and consider it an
honor. Thank you for your support.

The annual Jimmy Buffet party held on June 20th .was
once again a great event for the members. If you missed
July 2009
it, you missed a really good time with your fellow sailing
friends. Putting the party together takes a lot of time,
effort and energy. Without all of the volunteers that gave
so much of their time and talents, we could not have
pulled it off. The volunteers included; Jack & Barbara
Rudduck, Patsy Randolph; Janet & Les Robertson, Mo
Simmons, Pam & John Lack, Sandy Walker, Millie
McVey, Vic & Evelyn Stuckey; Mary Holmes; Linda
Arnold, Anita Gross, Gary & Mary Bourgeois, Ron & Joan
Wilson, Tom & Rose Ballant; Herb Eastwood; Stacey and
Steve Wilson; Terry & Gail Tomko; Rick Sorkenson; Bev
& Bill McCarthy. Also thank you to all of the other
members that jumped in at the last minute and helped! I
hope the volunteers had as much fun working this event
as those that attended had. Our Fathers Day Breakfast
was also a great success and the many members that
attended it were treated to a delicious breakfast prepared
by Fred and Sandra Lindsey and her crew of volunteers.
Coming up next is the Annual 4th of July Celebration on
Saturday July 4th. The Branch Long Distance Race will
begin at 10:00AM. We’ll start the buffet lines at 4:00pm.
This year we’re going to have a “SUPER BIG POTLUCK
BLOWOUT”! Everyone attending is requested to
bring a dish to share with others. Members whose last
name starts with A – K bring a side dish. ; L – R bring a
salad; and S – Z bring a dessert.
PLEASE, remember to RSVP for EACH event. We need
to know in advance how many people will be attending. It
really helps us to be able to plan and buy the necessary
items for all events. You can sign up on the website link
for RSVP or send us an email to
[email protected] or [email protected]

Last month I mentioned that it is an Army Corps of
Engineers requirement that non-marine type 110 VAC
extension cords must be disconnected from the dock
pedestals whenever the owner leaves his boat.
Keel Boats
Saturday, June 13, 2009 was a great day
for a sail boat race. Winds out of SSE at
8-16 with gusts and shifts. Length of
course was 6.04 NM. Bill McVey won the
day, with a second and a first place. Fred
Lindsey with a first and a second,
because of our scoring system, was in
2nd place at end of day. Do not take
anything for granted in racing. May have
no wind for next two race days , or could be lightening
storms. Very close racing in J-22 fleet. Most improved
sailor in fleet has been Scott Dunn, and with his youth
and athletic ability, will be a real factor for a long time. He
will only get better with time. Only thing he needs is more
"stick" time. Some of the sailors have requested to have 2
race days per month instead of our one. The second
would not count in our standing as now worked out, but
would be strictly for improving their sailing skills. Will be
happy to do, but should have at least 3 one designs. I can
easily throw out a windward mark, and use our existing
permanent mark for leeward mark and start-finish line.
You'll let me know when you want it done. Weekends
would probably work out best for most of you, but I live
here and am available any time.
It was, subsequently, brought to my attention that the
same applies to hydro lift motors that have common 110
VAC cords and plugs.
THE ONLY ARMY CORPS OF ENGINEERS
APPROVED POWER CORD WHICH MAY BE LEFT
CONNECTED IN THE OWNERS’ABSENCE IS THE
TWIST LOCK (TYPICALLY YELLOW) MARINE CABLE.
Youth Sailing
Sailing Down Under
Kellie Terrell
Coleman Terrell, one of LCYC’s
Youth Sailors, recently had the
opportunity to sail while visiting
Australia in June. He crewed on
Broomstick, a Modified Open 66,
which was participating in the Audi
Winter Series, hosted by the
Cruising Yacht Club of Australia,
located on Rushcutter’s Bay in
Sydney. The races were held on
Sydney Harbour, and included 189
boats, divided into 10 fleets.
Coleman’s job for the day was
working the port-side grinder and
assisting with sail hoists. At the end of the day, the
skipper and regular crew of Broomstick reported that
PHRF fleet was given same windward and leeward mark
as J-22s, but a G course, (triangle-windward -leeward). J22s were given a 6 (3 windward-leeward). Worked out
well as everyone finished within reasonable time. Great to
see Cal-25, "Blu Gnu", with Chris Nichols and Russ
Ansley, receiving a bullet in 2nd race. What is really
amazing is that Chris has only boat that is constantly kept
in the water. Others are either on hydro-hoists or stored at

be any better at forecasting weather?
top of hill. Right there would be enough to place
tremendous disadvantage on Chris because of condition
of bottom of boat. Remarkable performance!! Well done
Chris and Russ.
Brian Purcell in J-24, "Old Yellow", has a huge lead in
standing, with a bullet and a second. Tied for second with
Chris Nichols, is Henry McGill, in his J-80. It appears
Henry is finally sailing up to potential of his "rocket" ship.
Derek Crawford, who usually is in contention for 1st
place, had a equipment breakdown and could not sail 2nd
race and had to eat an 8th place. Mark Bird may also
have a wet bottom boat, that I did not mention earlier. If
his does sail wet, I salute him for racing. I am sure his
boat handling ability will only improve. The more he races,
the more he will understand rules of the road as well as a
tremendous confidence builder.
Dave and Michelle Lilley had a 3rd place, mainly due to a
great start. Also, Dave has steadily improved his boat
handling skills and it shows. No substitute for racing to
improve your sailing skills. If you race enough, you will be
caught in all types of weather conditions, and will learn
how to handle those conditions. When you are pleasure
sailing, you will know how too handle "stuff" that you'll run
into.
RC boat had Bob Taylor, Bob Middleton, Bill Cochrane
and myself aboard. Chase boat manned by Dave
Sanford, Lee Woodbury, and Anita Rodriquez.
Great meal, which is supposed to be snacks, but Lucia
and Wayne Weston are always coming up with exotic
foods! Had bratwurst with sauce. Sauce was delicious ;
curry, onion, mustard and catsup. Also usual goodies and
dessert. Need Wayne and Lucia on race course, so enjoy
them while we can.
Board Boats
Harold Simmons gave me a print out of weather forecast
for Sunday, June 14, 2009. It showed the wind holding
steady, due South, 180 degrees, starting around noon,
and holding all day at 11 mph. He gave it to me at
Skippers Meeting around 2:00PM. The Flying Scots
wanted only 3 races , but long races. The Sunfish wanted
at least 3 or more races. Bob Taylor, who was the PRO,
decided to give both classes, windward-leeward courses.
They would have the same start-finish line and leeward
mark, but the Sunfish windward leg would be roughly 1/2
distance and a different colored mark. Bob was assisted
by Betty Rourke and Bob Middleton. Chase boat manned
by Bill Cochran, Lee Woodbury and myself. When left
Super dock to place windward mark, after RC boat was
anchored, noted wind was very unsettled , had not settled
down to a prevailing direction. Bob wanted .8NM for Scots
and .4 for Sunfish windward legs. RC boat was anchored
in front of breakwater, so due south would have placed it
just to left of Turkey Cove. When arrived at drop area,
wind was much further east, around 120 degrees. So
much for weather forecasting, but to miss by 60 degrees,
pretty amazing. Harold Simmons and I were talking after
races and wondering in 100 years from now, would they
1st race for Scots under way. Wind 120 degrees at 8-16
with higher gusts. Shifty but not as marked as keel boat
races yesterday. Bill McVey won first 2 races and second
in 3rd race. Jeff Forester had 2 seconds and a 1st in last
race. Stacy was not crewing for him. Bruce / Scott Dunn
had 3rd across the board.
Sunfish had 4 windward-leeward races. Very close racing
in Fish class. Keith Zars prevailed with 2 firsts, a second
and a third, for a total of 7. Chris Besch had a first, 2
seconds and a 4th, for a total of 9. Dave Sanford had the
last 1st place. Coleman Terrell had a 2nd, but a 5th in one
race really hurt him. That is when you know you have a
good fleet. The 1st places are scattered about. In the
Sunfish fleet, just a couple of years ago, we had 8
different 1st place finishers out of 9 races! That is really
amazing. Our Sunfish fleet is really that close. Any of the
top 6 racers are capable of winning at any given time.
Great to see Jim McNeel out sailing his Fish. Seemed to
have really enjoyed himself. The lone female Sunfish
sailor and the only female helmsman was Michelle Lilley.
Out of 350 members, we have one female racer. What is
wrong with this picture? It was blowing 16+ but
manageable, even for a light weight. Michelle hung in
there and sailed every race. I feel she learned more about
sailing than at any time in past. She was strictly on her
own. That’s what is so great about a one person boat. No
body telling you what to do, just do it and learn. Gene, will
you please?
Harold Simmons, the old man of the fleet, is the guy that
wanted more races! Hard to beat that kind of
determination, and seemed to have more fun than
anyone. Gary Bourgeois is always a threat , be it in a J-22
or a Sunfish. Have seen him win his share of races, but
this Sunday , he was definitely off his game. We all have
days like that. I am just so used to seeing Gary in or near
front.
Lucia and Wayne Weston again provided food for sailors.
Better enjoy them while you can. Think next year will be
on race course, at least, I hope so.
We were also joined on the RC boat by a new Flying Scot
sailor, George Irving. Was great help and very eager to
learn.

Make A Boat Competition
By James Kizziar
The Second Annual LCYC Make a Boat Competition will
be held on Saturday, August 22, 2009 beginning at 3:00
p.m. on the LCYC super dock. Teams will build their
boats on the super dock within a prescribed time limit
from materials provided by the Club. Teams can also
embellish their boats with decorations of their choice.
After the completed boats are judged, they will compete in
a paddle-powered race in the LCYC lagoon (between A

dock and B dock).
Teams: This event will be an intra-club competition.
Teams from D Dock, C Dock, B Dock, the Youth Dock
and Trailer Sailors will compete for Make a Boat prizes.
Members desiring to field an independent team can do
so, but must register by contacting Jim Kizziar at 210299-3526 by August 1 to ensure availability of materials
for their boat.
Scenes From The Past
Date/Time: Saturday, August 22. Boat building begins at
3:00 p.m. and ends at 5:00 p.m. Judging and races to
follow.
Materials: Blue insulation sheet, rolls of duck tape and a
plywood kneeling pad will be provided by the Club.
Teams may NOT add any other structural materials to
those supplied by the Club . Teams are encouraged to
"Theme" and decorate their boat, at their expense.
Theme: Each boat should have a theme. The better the
theme, the more elaborate the theme, the more points will
be awarded by the Judges.
Design and Assembly: The boat must be a "sit in"
vessel. No "sit on" designs (such as surfboard look-alikes) are allowed.

Dick Edwards.
Paddles for each boat are the responsibility of the team
and not the club, so remember to bring them to the event.
It will be a long race by hand paddling!
Boats may be designed prior to the competition, but must
be built on the Super dock within the time period specified
for the competition. Hand tools only (no power tools) may
be used in building the boat.
The Race: The start and finish of the race will in the
LCYC lagoon, which will permit cheering spectators,
portable chairs and refreshments. The race will be
against the clock. Life jackets are required for all racers.
The racer must be a member of the Team (e.g., the D
dock team racer must have a boat on D dock, or be a
family member with a boat on the dock). In the event of
tie, a "final heat" will be conducted between the boats.
Lake Canyon Yacht Club — 1981. Photo contributed by
Dick Edwards.
Awards: A panel of "distinguished judges" will select the
awards in each category. Bribing of judges is prohibited.
Awards will include Best Theme and Decoration, Best
Construction, Most Spirited Shore Crew and Fastest Time
to the Race Finish.
Refreshments: Each Team is to supply its own
refreshments and shore crew. Sharing of refreshments is
encouraged. The Club will provide a beer keg for the
event. Since this will be an LCYC family event, each
team is expected to control the consumption of alcoholic
beverages to those of legal age.
Come join in the competition and fun. Cheer on your
favorite team. Observe engineering and boat building
skills on the Super dock. If you are not on a Team, come
to the dock and enjoy the fun. If you have any questions

Canyon Lake Sailing Foundation
Attention Visitors
The Canyon Lake Sailing Foundation solicits donations for the LCYC
Youth Program. Specifically, there are immediate needs for a chase boat
as well as more lasers in the program, from utility grade training boats to
higher quality competitive racing boats. In the absence of donated boats,
we are making plans to purchase high quality used boats. Your cash
donation would help.
All donations (equipment or cash) to the foundation are tax
deductible. If you’d like to make a cash donation, please send it to P.O.
Box 18554, San Antonio, TX 78218-0554 made payable to CLSF.
Inquires or offers should be addressed to Don Farrer
