Southern Cross Schools Weekly Newsletter 25 of 2016 School for the Planet Southern Cross Schools PO Box 116, Hoedspruit, 1380 Phone: 015 793 0590 E-mail: [email protected] www.southerncrossschools.co.za Week 1 of September 2016 Solar Eclipse Thank You: To Teacher Pauline, Captain Maryke and Captain Michael from 19 Squadron for a special helicopter visit. To parents, friends and grandparents who attended the special Grandparents Assembly. To everyone that supported the Cross Country, Entrepreneurs Market, Grade Seven Games and Trashion Show. At SCS we place great value on educating our children about topical events. The recent solar eclipse was viewed by all the children from the Pre and Prep School. The amazement from the younger children at how the moon was trying to 'eat' the sun, as believed by many people from the 'olden days', was so very special. Sensitising our children to natural phenomena as and when it happens encourages them to take a ‘real’ interest in their beautiful world. Grandparent’s Assembly Grandparents and family members were entertained by all our Pre-schoolers, even the tiniest of tots, during an assembly. Singing and dancing, the cuties held a captive audience. We thank all our grandparents for playing such an important role in the development of our children. Well done to all performers and to their teachers for we all know that getting busy little bodies to stand in place and perform as practised is no easy feat! Mini-Cricket at Drakensig An exhilarating day of minicricket games was held at Drakensig recently. Victories and losses were experienced but Cricket was the ultimate winner. Our Grade One to Three boys showed off their very good bowling and batting skills. While the level of intensity and competitiveness varied between the three teams, they all did us proud. Many thanks to the parents who supported and the dads and friends who assisted in managing the teams. Prep School Hockey Comes To An End After a couple of weeks filled with dribbling, pushing and defending, the hockey girls ended off their season with big smiles. The hard work of learning how to play together as a team paid off in their last matches. With a couple of wins, draws and two defeats the Under 11s were sad to see the season come to an end. The Under 13 Team really came into their own at the end of the season, playing excellent hockey but unfortunately battling to reach the goal box; they achieved a few losses and a number of draws. Well done to all of the girls involved this season, for showing great enthusiasm and good sportsmanship throughout.
