We haven‘t had any diagnosed cases at Kellyville recently, however, it can be a life threatening illness, particularly to babies, so parents need to be aware of the symptoms and Identify, Protect and Prevent. Whooping cough in babies can lead to pauses in normal breathing, pneumonia, feeding problems, weight loss, seizures, brain damage and in some cases, death. It can also be a severe illness in older children and adults. Whooping cough usually begins with a blocked or runny nose, tiredness, mild fever and a cough. The cough gets worse and severe bouts of uncontrollable coughing can develop. Coughing bouts can be followed by vomiting, choking or taking a big gasping breath which causes a whooping sound. Some newborns may not cough at all but they can stop breathing and turn blue. Older children and adults may just have a cough that lasts for many weeks. They may not have the whoop. Whooping cough is spread when an infected person coughs bacteria into the air which can be inhaled by people nearby. If they are not treated early, people with whooping cough are infectious in the first three weeks of their illness. Whooping cough spreads easily through families, childcare centres and schools. Infectious children are restricted from going to pre-school and school. Babies need to be immunised at 2 months, 4 months and 6 months. A booster is needed at 4 years of age. A booster for adults is recommended for: Both parents when they are planning a pregnancy or just after the baby is born. Other adult household members, grandparents and carers of infants under 12 months of age Adults working with young children, especially health care and child care workers. For a limited time, a free booster is available from GP’s for new parents, grandparents and carers of babies under 12 months. Jack ‘Petra” Sparrow Education Week Thank you to all of the parents who attended our Open Morning yesterday for Education Week. The children thoroughly enjoyed showing parents and grandparents around the school and I noted that our wonderful gardens received quite a lot of attention. Peter Pan is our very exiting event for the next 2 evenings and then of course we are participating in the Pulse Performance at the Opera House on Thursday evening. Education Week will close with our final performance of Peter Pan on Friday evening. Our staff at Kellyville are extremely dedicated to your children and they have worked very hard to organise these events. Please support us by purchasing tickets for the performances if you haven‘t already done so. Petra Hocking Relieving Deputy Principal Library News …… Every year since 1945, the Children‘s Book Council of Australia has hosted Children‘s Book Week to honor and celebrate the work of Australian authors and Illustrators. The 2012 Book Week theme ‗Champions Read‘ invites schools to reflect upon the benefits of reading and to promote a reading-rich culture. This is particularly relevant in a world where reading is in fierce competition with so many other pastimes, especially those dependent on technology. On Thursday 26th July students from Kellyville Public School enjoyed a visit by Swifts Netball NSW champion Sam May and Paralympian Swimmer Annabelle Williams. Both sporting champions provided inspirational advice on what it takes to become a Champion, answered questions about their personal sporting journeys and enjoyed the special guests reading Bob Graham‘s ―A Bus Called Heaven‖. Antibiotics are used to treat whooping cough in the early stages and can help prevent spreading the illness to others. After 5 days of antibiotics you are no longer infectious. People who are not treated early can spread the infection in the first 3 weeks of their illness. Anyone can get whooping cough. Immunisation reduces the risk of infection but immunity fades over time. You can still get whooping cough even if you‘ve been immunised. www.kellyville-p.schools.nsw.edu.au Mary Jane Rosano Librarian Page 2 Kellyville Public School Newsletter Peter Pan Costume Returns Monday 6th August A huge well done to the below students who have completed the Premier‘s reading challenge already: Selina KB, Hayley KB, Ava KB, Fynn KB, Lucy KB, Emma KB, Barney KB, Ryan KB, Adam KP, Cameron KP, Anusha KP, Nicole KP, Harriet KP, Gemma KP, Liam KP Raiden KP Hannah KP, Abrielle KP, Reuben KP, Lucas KP, Nicholas KP, Indiana KR, Joo-you KR, Harrison KR, Shanice KR, Abigail KY, Cooper KY, Harvey KY, Ryland KY, Olivia KY, Max KY, Emily KY, Archie KY, Jade KY, Eaden KY, Rachel KY, Tom KY, Cohen KY, Chloe 1C, Shriya 1C, William 1C, Isabel 1C, Catie 1C, Maya 1C, Julia 1C, Olivia 1C, Jack 1C, Ritishaa 1C, Riley 1C, Deanna 1C, Rachel 1C, Olivia 1C, Chanelle 1H, Liam 1H, Joshua 1H, Kia 1H, Liam 1H, Emilie 1H, Gwendolyn 1H, Isabella 1H, Farah 1H, Lucy 1M, Cadel 1M, Mia 1M, Kaitlin 1M, Dylan 1M, Madison 1M, Ashlee 1M, Kieran 1M, Caitlyne 1M, Michael 1S, Jayden 1S, Christopher 1S, Luke 1S, Shevaune 1S, Rosalie 2E, Erin 2E, Kiara 2E, Liam 2E, Abby 2E, Isabella 2E, Charles 2E, Chloe 2J, Zachariah 2J, Jared 2J, Lachlan 2J, Sean 2J, Avessta 2J, Na-Young 2J, Jamie 2J, Saaranj 2J, Tyler 2J, Ashton 2J, Rod 2J, Thomas 2J, Sophie 2M, Orla 2M, Emily 2M, Grace 2M, Xavier 2M, Jack 2M, Orion 2M Edison 2M, Nakeisha 3S, Loryn 3S, Calvin 3S, William 3S, Jade 3S, Trey 3S, Emily 3S, Olivia 3S, Jahnavi 3S, Emma 3S, Emily Janet 3S, Jessica 3S, Isabelle 3S, Earl 3S, Sylvia 3T, Ashvini 3T, Emily 3T, Anastasia 3T, Gabriel 3T, Arnav 3T, Jessie 3T, Aditi 3T, Nandini 3T, Delphi 3T, Elise 3T, Haqnnah 3/4B, Alecia 3/4B, Taryn 3/4B, Amelie 3/4B, Jad 3/4B, Madi 4D, Daniella 4D, Caitlin 4D, Isla 4D, Georgia 4D, Thaanya 4D, Sarah 4D, Nidhi 4D, Kai 4D, , Ben 4D, Luke 4D, Matthew 4K, Menuja 4K, Jordyn 4K, Joel 4K, Caitlin 4K, Diya 4/5E, Suhaasini 4/5E, Zoe 4/5E, Jacinda 4/5E, Holly 4/5E, Kacie 4/5E,Amarachi 4/5E, Ama 4/5E, Donya 5M, Hannah 5M, Angelina 5M, Taniya 5M, Zac 5M, Sarah 5W, Danai 5W, Divya 6B, Simran 6B, Devni 6K, Caitlin 6K, Alex 6K, Darcie 6K.
