Ceremony Program - Vancouver Island University
Vancouver Island University g r a d u at i o n c o n v o c at i o n c e r e m o n i e s J u n e 6, 7 and 8 • 2 0 16 Vancouver Island University's motto, Discoveries in Education, was adopted in 1969. Recalling Captain Alejandro Malaspina, who explored the Vancouver Island region in the 18th century, VIU's Coat of Arms pays tribute to exploration by depicting a Spanish barque under full sail. The motto also creates a link with one of Captain Malaspina's ships the Descubierta - which means Discovery. The Coat of Arms is displayed proudly onstage during the graduation convocation ceremonies in which VIU celebrates the achievements, successes, exploration, and discovery of each graduating student. co n v o c at i o n p r o g r a m | JUNE 6, 7 & 8,2016 1 Message from the Chancellor I extend gratitude to the Coast Salish Peoples on whose ancestral land this great University does its work. Graduates, studies show that family background is the main determinant of financial fate. This means that if your parents have post-secondary education it is far more likely you will follow in that path. And if your parents do not have post-secondary education, by you achieving your educational goal, you have opened a door for new opportunities for yourself, your children and generations to come. I extend a heartfelt, multi-generational congratulations to you and your families. You are graduating into a time of unprecedented change and challenge. The truth about Canada’s treatment of Indigenous Peoples has been told - our founding myths were riddled with racism. Now it is time for reconciliation, but colonization has injured us all profoundly. The land, too, has been left with trauma. The old narrative, privileging individualism and worshiping consumerism, has transformed and harmed Mother Earth, out of human arrogance and greed. We need to have justice for the land and resources. We must heal the wounds of the past, transform the present conditions and create a future of dignity and beauty for all beings and for all life on Earth. This is the work you have come here to do. I have heard Elders say that your education is as good as what you do with it. Dream, learn, and then act - give and give back. I extend gratitude to VIU for preparing you for a democracy of reconciliation. The face of democracy is changing - half of the federal cabinet is women. Working closely with Indigenous Peoples, VIU’s partners, governors, teachers and staff, alumni, here at VIU you have participated in a multi-cultural learning environment which is an incubation space for a new narrative. Here, talent has no racial or sexual boundaries; the culture is of innovation and inclusion, and there is always a helping hand, removing barriers to education through programs like the Tuition Waiver for Youth in Care. These lessons strengthen our national identity and provide opportunities to embrace the challenges of our collective survival. In diversity there is beauty and there is strength. Bless you graduates - the artists, the chefs, the builders, the fixers, the singer of songs and righter of wrongs - workers for justice and healing; the visionaries, the inventors, the scientists, educators and carriers of fresh meaning. Nothing is lost in love and education. I echo the words of the Hopi Nation Elders: “You are the ones we have been waiting for.” Louise Mandell, Q.C. Chancellor Serving in a volunteer capacity, the Chancellor acts as an ambassador for and a champion of the University. The Chancellor is the titular head of the university, presiding over convocation ceremonies, conferring degrees and providing advice to the President. The Chancellor is a member of the Board of Governors and the Senate. 2 co n v o c at i o n p r o g r a m | JUNE 6, 7 & 8,2016 Message from the President The Vancouver Island University community – faculty, staff, alumni and current students – would like to extend our congratulations to the Graduates of 2016. It’s no small feat to pursue a post-secondary education and put in the hard work and determination it takes to reach today’s milestone, convocation. As they take their well-earned place on the stage and experience this important rite of passage, I hope our graduates, and their families and friends who supported them, can take a moment to reflect on what they’ve accomplished. I also hope that they are now looking towards their future, inspired by the possibilities. The convocation ceremony is a celebration of excellence. The accomplishments of the graduates are one example of this. During this convocation week we are also celebrating the excellence as exemplified by our new Honorary Doctorate recipients. You can read more about them in this program; some of you will be fortunate enough to hear them speak during the convocation ceremony. These extraordinary individuals are, like our graduates, now part of the VIU community. I know everyone will be inspired by their stories. Each of our Honorary Doctorate recipients has demonstrated excellence through life and career accomplishments. What is most inspiring is that all three once sat where our graduates are sitting today – delighting in the completion of their program and wondering what the future might bring. After their own convocation ceremony, they began the next chapter of their lives, putting their education to work to help them realize new goals and dreams, determined that challenges and setbacks would not deter them from their path. All of us can be inspired by their example, and see them as role models for our own lives. Today our graduates also become VIU alumni. They are now part of a community of more than 75,000 alumni who are working, learning and enjoying life all over the world. Finally, please join me in encouraging our graduates to stay connected to VIU through the University’s Alumni Association and to embrace the new opportunities that have opened up because they are graduates. On behalf of VIU’s Board of Governors, the Senate, faculty and staff, congratulations to all of the graduates – we are proud of you. Originally trained as a teacher, Brynelsen took a position in 1973 in Vancouver with what is now the Developmental Disability Association to run the infant home care program. In 1975 Brynelsen was asked by the Ministry of Social Services to be the Provincial Advisor for the Infant Development Program (IDP) under the direction of a Provincial Steering Committee. When Brynelsen started in the field, conventional professional practice was to institutionalize infants with intellectual disabilities. However, the IDP initiated a different approach, one that was family-centered and helped integrate children with developmental delays. Her efforts to support families with special needs children HONORARY DOCTOR OF LETTERS – DR. JEAN BARMAN Dr. Jean Barman is an acknowledged expert on British Columbia’s history. When the platform party has assembled onstage, a smaller procession, known as the Chancellor's Procession, enters the theatre, accompanied by the drumming of VIU's Elders-in-Residence. The Chancellor's Procession consists of the Chancellor, President, Board Chair, Vice-Presidents, Registrar, and macebearer. VIU Paddle Paddle The paddle that is carried in and out of the theatre by the President was given to the University by Chief Shawn A-inchut Atleo when he was installed as Chancellor in 2008. This paddle, made by Brian Bob, Qwuyutsapulth of the Coast Salish/ Ucluelet First Nation, is carved of yellow cedar and signifies teamwork, pulling together, like in a canoe. The salmon carved onto the blade represents journeys; salmon leave the place where they are hatched but return later in their lives, much in the same way that youth earn an education and then return home to bring their skills and knowledge back to their communities. During his installation celebrations, Chief Atleo presented a paddle to each of the four regional campuses with the wish that it be used at special occasions, such as a graduation ceremony. The paddle given to the Nanaimo campus is a steering paddle, which helps guide us in our important journeys. It has become an important symbol and tradition in our Convocation ceremonies. Mace During the Middle Ages, a metal-clad wooden mace was an effective weapon in battle. As newer and more powerful arms were developed, its military significance diminished, and it was transformed into a symbol of authority. Today, the ceremonial mace is used in many government assembly locations, such as the British and Canadian Houses of Parliament, and in university ceremonies such as this. The mace used for VIU’s convocation was designed and created by retired art instructor John A. Charnetski in 1994. The metre-long mace is made of stainless steel and goldplated cast bronze. It features four guardian eagles and enameled medallions bearing VIU’s coat of arms and arbutus emblems. VIU Mace co n v o c at i o n p r o g r a m | JUNE 6, 7 & 8,2016 13 Ceremonial Convocation Suite Presented by Coast Capital Savings VIU's Ceremonial Convocation Suite was created by worldrenowned artist Arthur Vickers, OBC, DFA, and given by Coast Capital Savings to the University in May 2015 to support our institutions' common goal of inspiring and celebrating the generations of VIU students, graduates and alumni. The suite also reflects a shared value of Coast Capital Savings and VIU - the belief in the power of education to change peoples' lives and build strong, vibrant communities. There are three distinct pieces in the Ceremonial Convocation Suite: • the Chancellor's Chair, The Keeper of Wisdom and Knowledge; • the President and Vice-Chancellor's Chair, The Keeper of Knowledge; and • the Ceremonial Parchment Bentcorner Box (Huupukwanum) where the parchments are held before being presented to the University's graduates. 14 co n v o c at i o n p r o g r a m | JUNE 6, 7 & 8,2016 The suite is an integral part of the University's convocation ceremony. The Chancellor and President & Vice-Chancellor reside in the two chairs during the ceremony, surrounded by the University's faculty and graduates. During the ceremony, each graduate, after receiving their parchment, is invited to touch the lid of the Ceremonial Parchment Bentcorner Box, marking the end of their VIU education and the beginning of the next chapter of their lives. Through this tradition they leave their imprint on the wood, symbolizing the impact and impression they will leave on VIU and weaving their story together with all the graduates who came before them and all who will come after them. When the ceremonial convocation pieces are not in use at VIU's convocation ceremonies they are on public display at the University's Nanaimo campus in the Welcome Centre (Building 300). For more information: viu.ca/ceremonial-suite. Convocation Procession Marshals The graduates from each program are lead in the procession by a faculty member from that program.
