In 2009, its population was recorded as 993,492. A port on the Chari River, near the confluence with the Logone River, it directly faces the Cameroonian town of Kousséri, to which the city is connected by a bridge. It is also a special statute region, divided into 10 arrondissements. It is a regional market for livestock, salt, dates, and grains. Meat, fish and cotton processing are the chief industries, and the city continues to serve as the centre of economic activity in Chad. While primarily an administrative center, the city includes the Nassara Strip commercial centre and residential areas, such as Mbololo, Chagoua, Paris Congo and Moursal. The main commercial avenue of the city is the Avenue Charles de Gaulle. The city’s highest temperatures are usually seen between March and June, just before the onset of the heavier rains. City Overview N’Djamena is today divided into 10 municipal districts, and governed by a special decree. It suffered heavy destruction during the 1979/1980 Tisaa chuhur civil war. In the present the city is heavily repopulated without any significant change in terms of social amenities and infrastructures. The city road network, water and Electricity supply, drainage, garbage disposal, etc, still call for concern. N’Djamena, formerly called Fort Lamy until 1973, is the capital and largest city of the Republic of Chad, with an estimated population of about 993 492 inhabitants in 2009 (GPHC 2009). It is about 25km North – South cross section and 20km East – West. N’Djamena is in the Sahel of Africa called the Sahel sedimentary which receives sufficient rainfall that favors a one-season land cultivation for agricultural purposes. There are two seasons namely, a short rainy season and a long dry season. Precipitation is zero for the 5 months of November to March, and about 144mm and 175mm in July and August respectively. Located at the confluence of the Chari and Logone rivers, opposite the Cameroonian town of Kousseri with which it is connected by a single-lane bridge, Ndjamena was founded by Emile Gentil May 29, 1900 on the site of a small village Kotoko known as Fort-Lamy, in memory of Commander Joseph Amedee Francois Lamy, who died at the Battle of Kousseri few days earlier . On November 6, 1973, President François Tombalbaye, the first president of Chad, renamed the city, giving it its present name of N’Djamena, the name of a nearby Arab village - Am Djamena - meaning ‘the place of our rest’’. 8 N’Djamena Resource Guide City Overview RESIDENTIAL CITY AREAS Historically, the city is divided into two major sections – north and south – generally said to be inhabited by the Arabs and the Sahar, respectively. A third distinctive area would be that of the Europeans. While primarily an administrative center, the city includes the Nassara Strip commercial centre and residential areas such as Mbololo, Chagoua, Paris Congo and Moursal. Now, the foreign personnel in the capital live in the most vibrant areas, such as Rue Bordeaux, Esso residential Area, Airport district area, avenue Charles DeGaulle, Meridian, Mardjandaffack, Djanbalbar, Klemat, Sabangali, European district. These are the areas where large villas housing embassies, foreign companies in Chad, general administration ,and the central market are found. Also in these areas are found well ventilated houses with gardens and parking spaces for cars. The villas are built with cement blocks or fired laterite bricks, of various architectural designs. Here, one finds housing where the villas and houses are well equipped. Located in the city center of the capital, these neighborhoods are inhabited by people of different ethnicities, nationalities and races . N’Djamena Resource Guide 9 Airport Information N’Djamena International Airport serves N’Djamena, Chad, and is the main international airport of Chad.The airport is dual use, with civilian and military installations on opposite sides of the single runway. Hospitals in N’Djamena are sometimes affected by strikes by Government workers. You need to keep in mind the possibility that medical services, stretched at the best of times, may be even less responsive than usual. Tel. +235 2516303 [email protected] N’Djamena Resource Guide 21 Museums & Historical sites Musee National N’Djamena (National Museum) The Chad National Museum (Musée National N’Djamena) is the national museum of Chad and is located in the capital city of N’Djamena at near Avenue Felix Eboue, in the Fort Archambault area. The museum was established on October 6, 1962 in temporary quarters under the name of Chad National Museum, Fort-Lamy, reflecting the earlier, colonial name of Chad’s capital. In 1964, it moved to the former town hall, near the Place de l’Independence. At the time of its establishment, it had four rooms: Prehistory, Protohistory, Archives and Folk arts, crafts and traditions. The prehistory room, at least in 1965, included items related to pebble culture, including material from the Amgamma cliff, Stone Age implements, axes with helve-holes, nether millstones, and quartz and obsidian arrowheads. The museum at one time included a full-sized ochre reproduction of a hunting scene from the first millennium B.C. The collection also included baked bricks, some attributed to Boulala and Babalia people, items discovered at the Bouta-Kabira sanctuary including human masks, bronze objects and bone tools. The north has little rain all year. It can really rain at any time of the year there, with cooler temperatures being the norm. The southern part of the country has a more distinct wet and dry season. The rains come in around the beginning of May and last till the beginning or mid October. Zakouma national park Set in the far south, away from the ongoing crisis in the east, this national park has become a favored destination for travelers seeking adventure. Zakouma park is practically virgin territory, which covers an area of about 3,000sq km. One of the main attractions of Zakouma park is its elephants. Fans believe it is the best place in Africa to observe elephants. During the rainy season, when they begin to leave the park to avoid the muddy terrain, one can see the huge herds that sometimes may go up to a thousand animals. Luis Arranz, a Spaniard who ran the park for six years, admits it is sometimes difficult to advertise Zakouma, given that information on the country speak only of the violence afflicting the country. There is one big problem, which is the threat posed by poachers. It can be said that this is an extension 0f Zakouma park, since some of the animals from there sometimes migrate to this park. Like the Zakouma park, the threat posed by poachers is the major problem facing the park. Tourism site of Douguia also remains a place of tourism for expatriates in Chad. This is about 65km from Ndjamen, toward the popular Lake Chad. It provides an excellent place of rest and retreat, given its good accommodation facilities. And, the lake just about 40km away, provides good tourist attraction. EnnediPlateau Explore extraordinary natural surroundings along the Ennedi Plateau. Located along the southern edge of the Sahara Desert where it borders the Sahel in the north of the country, this area rewards those who endure the difficulties of traveling there with unusual geologic formations such as the domino-like Labyrinthe de Kecheli, the massive arch of Aloba, and the Guelta d’Archei; gueltas are pools formed from underground water in lowland areas, a type of oasis. Find petroglyphs such as those painted all over the rocks of Cavaliers Volants in the Massif de Terkei. These areas are best accessed from the small town of Fada, where there is an airstrip. Lake Chad is the second largest lake in West Africa, but perhaps not for long. The lake is getting smaller and the population who use to make a living here is dwindling. Back in the 60s-80s, fishing produced about 120,000 maximum tons of fish per year (with Chad taking about 70% of this). Today, the fishing economy around Lake Chad has diminished. While it is possible to go fishing on the Lake, with plenty of islands on the eastern side of the border with Niger and Nigeria, the fishing is just not the same and has yet to recover. The Nile Perch is one of the most caught fish in the Lake and its tributaries. What can I expect to find in an unfurnished, a semi-furnished or a furnished property? An unfurnished property will usually be empty. Semi furnished will usually contain basic electro-domestics. A fully furnished property will depend on the requirements of the expat. 2. What sort of flexibility will I have to negotiate rent or furnishings? With the agent, there is some flexibility in negotiation. 3. How many properties will I be shown? This depends on the Relocation Package you have; Our Basic Package includes 8 properties, Standard and Executive Packages include 15 properties. You will be told at the outset how many properties you will be shown or how much time you have available to do the house hunting. The properties provided will be as close to your ‘Needs Analysis’ description as possible according to what is available on the market at the time. 4. How can I secure a property that I choose? The tenant gives specifications of his choice to the agent. The agent, in turn, takes the tenant to the houses available. If these meet the tenant’s specifications, he chooses the one that best suites his desire. 5. What costs are involved in renting a property? The landlord has to pay the Estate agency fee. This is a flat rate based on the amount of rent (one months rent for a one year contract). Rent is usually paid biannually, but sometimes yearly payments can be requested. The security deposit is usually 3 months rent. The cost to register the contract is included in the rent. 6. What other expenses should I expect to pay? Utility expenses should be paid by the tenant. To convert your license the following documents are required: - International (or foreign) license - Residency document - 2 passport sized photos. 19. For how long can I drive my own car in Chad? A foreign registered car can be brought into the country provided it has approved insurance (within CEMAC) that is valid in Chad, the Car Specifications (to be surrended at the Customs’ office) and a Passavant (this costs about 5000 CFA). The vehicle is brought into the country on a ‘ Temporary Importation Permit ( T1) Generally the vehicle must be registered locally at the relevant government office after one week, with the possibility for extension, depending on the situation. In order to apply for local registration the following documents are required from the car owner: - Customs duties payment document - receipt for payment at the national treasury. 20.
