FWBS provides matter centre solution to Browne Jacobson
Bringing matters together
CASE STUDY: assessing BROWNE JACOBSON’s IT needs
Browne Jacobson is one of the largest law firms in the Midlands with regional and national reach
through offices in Birmingham, London and Nottingham. They are now over 500 strong with
196 lawyers and 62 partners, supported by a team of professional specialists.
Famous for their friendly and straightforward approach, they deliver first class individual
solutions for their clients. With a vision to be the first choice law firm for clients and employees
in the Midlands, they place emphasis on people, both internally and externally.
assessing Browne jacobson’s IT needs
The IT aims of Browne Jacobson were examined in detail during a strategic review in 2005 and since that time have
been continually reviewed and updated. This exercise looked to align IT to the business and to create a matter-centric
approach based around the Microsoft platform with a number of best of breed solutions tightly integrated.
Browne Jacobson has been an innovator in Case Management solutions for over 10 years and their existing ‘Solcase’
system has been heavily modified over that time to meet the demands of over 80 work types and more than
2,000 clients. It eventually became too difficult to maintain and enhance, particularly as the market was becoming
more sophisticated in its demands, meaning there was a risk to losing market advantage if that situation was allowed
to continue.
In addition, Browne Jacobson was looking to automate all the common firm-wide processes, including client inception
and anti-money laundering, as well as further moves towards the electronic file. These initiatives would cover the whole
firm and not just legal professionals of Case Management.
Having selected Matter Centre as a modern, best of breed Case Management System for our future needs and with
our previous investment in Interwoven as the best of breed Document Management System, the integration between
the two products is excellent news and will deliver us a joined up, matter centric system that will enhance our reputation
as an efficient, cost effective and innovative firm. Peter Birley, Director of IT, Browne Jacobson LLP

common processes, including client inception and anti-money laundering, as part of a gateway for all common
processes and access to firm-wide client and matter data.
The controls available allow different legal professionals within the firm, with different roles or who work on certain

using Matter Centre design tools.
