Artist Profile: Laurie Cartwright
New Monthly Feature - We will profile one of our
talented artists each month for you.
My parents returned to Alaska in 1964 after the “Big earthquake” as my dad was a
plumber and there was lots of work to be had. I started in 1st grade that winter at
Nunaka Valley Elementary School.
All my growing up years were spent in Anchorage Alaska when it was still a small
town and kids were free to roam the streets and woods without worries other than
the wildlife. I spent as much time as I could out in the wilderness whether on
horseback or just hiking and roaming in the woods. I learned to love the wildlife and
beauty around me.
By the time I finished with high school Anchorage had changed. I left and moved to
the small village of Talkeetna, Alaska where I met my wonderful husband
Jesse. We have lived and loved in this little village for 35+ wonderful
years.
From the time I was a small girl I have had a special love for animals and I
have attempted to portray them in many different mediums.
I started doing stained glass in the late 70’s, drawing my own patterns,
and continued until early arthritis in my right hand forced me to give it up.
After surgery on my thumb to remove a bone and a year recovery to get
my hand back I began to search for ways to express my art again. I took
up the weaving of grass baskets but it soon became apparent that the
arthritis in my other hand would not let me continue to pursue that medium.
In November of 2010 I was invited to a pastel class by a friend. I told her “I was not that kind of artist, I can’t draw” she
talked me into it anyways. When I picked up my first pastel, I found a medium that allowed me to portray animals and
the beauty around me in the way that I have always desired. I found my passion. I am still amazed and pleased by the
gift that God has given me.
I hope that my art conveys some of the beauty of the wonderful creatures
and world around us.
I participated in the 2012 Art show at the Alaska State Fair where I
received first and second place ribbons. I also donated 3 framed prints to
the 2014 KAKM Art Showcase auction which sold as a group. I also had a
painting in the 2012 Raven Show at Arctic Raven gallery
I have few prints for sale in
Wasilla at the Town Square Art
Gallery. I will also have my work
available for sale in Talkeetna at the Dancing Leaf Gallery and Denali
Images Gallery for the summer.

Jana Latham: “I have fallen
in love with alcohol inks, and
it's been a whirlwind
romance. I have taken two
classes at Blaine's given by
the talented Francine Dufour
Jones, and the inks have run away
with me. I plan on taking my original
paintings and making canvas and
silk prints, using them as digital art
painting backgrounds and
more. Oh.... the places I could
go....”
Gail Flotre - . While enjoying the sunny days of Tucson I was given a
lesson in how to design, carve and print block prints. They are now in
card form and ready for everyone to enjoy at Arctic Rose.
New hand drawn silks scarves are on their way...lots of new designs
will be available for Easter and Mother's Day. We all enjoy the bright
colors and softness of silk.
