Dear Friends,
After three years serving as the Program Director, this past year I assumed the role as
Youth Haven’s Executive Director. This transition came at a time when the demand
for our services was greater than ever, due in part to the downturn in the economy.
To meet the demand, with support of our highly qualified staff and community partners,
Youth Haven expanded its programs and fortified our resolve to protect and empower
children and strengthen families.

Youth Haven has long been known as a shelter for abused children. However, the
solution is not simply providing temporary shelter. It is providing children with the
resources they need to improve their resiliency so that they may grow into happy,
healthy, productive adults. The solution includes helping the child find a safe and
secure connection with their family or a responsible, caring adult. Finally, the solution
means prevention; providing intervention to families who simply may not have the
skills to successfully parent their children. Youth Haven provides these solutions
through comprehensive, therapeutic programs and community partnerships, creating
a circle of support for each child and family.

We are proud to continue Youth Haven’s long legacy as we celebrate our 41st year.
We look forward to the day when every child in Southwest Florida will grow up in a safe

The Rocky and
REWARDING
ROAD TO SUCCESS.
No child should ever have to experience what our youngsters have experienced. The
children brought to us have been removed from their homes due to abuse, neglect or
abandonment, and are severely traumatized. The adolescents and teens we work with
are survivors of the streets who have learned behaviors that are unacceptable, but
were necessary for their survival. We take these kids who have many challenges and
begin the process of rebuilding their lives. We teach our children to live in the world in
which they are going to exist. Not every story is a success story, but many are.
Daniel, “Danny”
Danny was a sweet, blond-haired, blue-eyed 11-year-old boy who lit up a room! Sadly though, there was
not much sunshine in his life. No stranger to the Youth Haven Emergency Shelter, in his 11 short years, he
had been in our care three times.
His mom, a single parent with a newborn baby, two other children, and a severe substance abuse
problem, could not handle Danny’s Asperger’s Syndrome. Removed from his mom numerous times, he
had lived in various foster homes and was eventually removed from his most recent home due to the
caregivers’ inability to effectively manage Danny’s behavioral outbursts.
At Youth Haven, he responded well to a highly structured therapeutic approach. This treatment plan
consisted of traditional therapy and art therapy, which proved to be a powerful and successful tool for
Danny. Through the power of art, he was able to express his fears and successes in a way he was unable
to do with his words. Danny’s outbursts became less frequent, he became happier and more confident,
and able to feel the warmth of the light we all knew he had inside.
Those times Danny has been with us, he tells us that he feels at home - safe, secure, and, for once, like
he is accepted.
Gradually, with the support of his therapist, he has reunited with his father who had stayed out of Danny’s
life for the most part. Through services we provided, Danny’s father was able to move forward with the
necessary preparations to welcome Danny into his home. Danny’s father continues to receive outpatient
therapy and education at Youth Haven so he can effectively manage Danny’s behavior, while showing
him the love and the consistency he needs.
Alexandra, “Alex”
Alex never knew her father and, at a young age, the courts removed her from her mother. She was
bounced from foster home to foster home, to a group home, to a cousin and, at age 15, was placed in
our care at Youth Haven.
Alex had learned early on to take care of herself, create her own goals and dreams, and work hard to
get where she wants to be in life. Unfortunately, her efforts were sabotaged by her life circumstances. She
found herself in the midst of substance abuse, gang activity and truancy. She arrived at the Emergency
Shelter with pink hair, tattoos, and, not surprisingly, quite a negative attitude.
The staff soon noticed that Alex also arrived with a gift – a gift of expression through words. She enjoyed
writing stories and engaging in “rap battles” with peers at school.
During her time at Youth Haven, we enrolled Alex in the Boys and Girls Club of Collier County program, as
a healthy afterschool activity. Her first go-around wasn’t successful; she was kicked out due to disruptive
behavior and angry outbursts. However, after working with her Youth Haven therapist and coming to
understand the underlying issues behind her anger, we were able to re-enroll her in the Boys and Girls
Club, and, this time she flourished. She was soon awarded “Youth of the Month,” and then nominated
for the Boys and Girls Club’s “Youth of the Year” award.
Alex became a leader in her community, and began to focus on her education and desire to graduate.
It was through the power of therapy, the dedication of the Youth Haven staff, and her newfound safe
and loving environment that Alex was able to grow from a combative and angry tough girl to a lovely,
intelligent young lady. Now, 16 years old, she is living with a wonderful and loving foster family, where she
is flourishing socially and academically.

Finally, the solution includes helping
the child find a safe and secure

families and the community. All
services are available in Spanish
and Creole, as well as English.
The Counseling Center accepts Medicaid and
insurances, and is open to all members of the community.
Emergency Shelter
Collier County’s only shelter for children ages 6-17 placed
in Youth Haven’s care by the State of Florida after being
removed from their homes due to physical
(including sexual) abuse, neglect, or abandonment.
Twenty-three beds are available 24-hours a day,
seven days a week.
Children stay an average of 45-60 days before being
placed in foster care or with a relative.
Children in Youth Haven’s emergency shelter receive
comprehensive care including medical, dental,
psychological, recreational, and educational support
in an enriching home-like environment.

Family Support and
Prevention Services
Family Support Services are designed
to strengthen families and prevent
child abuse, neglect, or abandonment.
Services include evidence-based
in-home parenting classes. Case
management services help families with
access to physical and mental health
treatment, linkage to services for wraparound support, and basic necessities.
Evidence –based substance abuse
prevention classes are provided in
after school programs. They educate
and guide youth to make appropriate
choices, and are proven to reduce the
potential for future substance abuse.
A Teen Drop in Center offers youth a safe
place to shower, launder clothes, study,
and socialize.
Nutritious meals and snacks are provided
each day.
An overnight shelter houses up to 23 teens
at a time.
Mobility and safety supports include bicycles,
bus passes, and emergency use cell phones.
Direct linkage to community agencies helps
meet youth’s complex needs including health
and dental care; mental health and substance
abuse counseling; pubic school liaison;
educational and vocational mentoring.

The 3rd Annual Charity Chuckle featured two
very funny guys. Our host and special guest,
Juston McKinney, has appeared on The Tonight
Show with Jay Leno, The Tonight Show with Conan
O’Brien, Late Show with David Letterman, and is
a former star of Bill Engvall’s popular Blue Collar
Comedy Tour - The Next Generation. Comedian
Al Ducharme is a celebrated performer at major
comedy clubs and theatres, and you may have
seen him on National Lampoon, Comedy Central,
The Tonight Show with Jay Leno and The Today
Show. Held at the Naples Italian American Club,
the buffet dinner was provided by Giovanni Italian

coordinated the event, and all funds raised
benefited Youth Haven.
The 26th Annual Wyndemere Traditions Golf Tournament,
“Birdies, Bogies & Bright Futures,” is one of our largest
and most established fundraising events. Since 1987, this
big-hearted, philanthropic community has raised more
than $1.2 million for Youth Haven’s children and families.
Chaired by loyal supporters Lynn and David Ladd, with
team prizes awarded in men’s, women’s, and mixed
couple’s divisions.

Our Third Annual Home • Hope • Healing
Luncheon, co-chaired by Kim Collins and
April Garrett, was attended by more than 350
Youth Haven supporters at The Ritz-Carlton
Golf Resort. With more than 350 Youth Haven
supporters present to hear his story, featured
speaker Erik Weihenmayer, the first blind man
to climb to the top of Mount Everest, shared
the challenges he faced in overcoming
unimaginable obstacles and defying the odds.
There was not a dry eye in the room, creating a
remarkable wave of giving by the attendees,
which inspired a generous matching gift
donation from a loyal Youth Haven supporter.

COMMUNITY SUPPORT
Dear Friends,
It has been a wonderful experience serving as President of the Youth Haven Board
of Directors this past year. The trend for Youth Haven is definitely on the upswing with
a number of positive changes and areas of growth. Much of this has been through
the guidance of our new Executive Director, Jinx Liggett, who has been a part of the
Youth Haven team for a number of years. Jinx possesses the vision and leadership skills
needed to continue to drive Youth Haven toward an ever-increasing role in serving the
needs of at-risk children in our area.
The Board has long recognized the talents, expertise and dedication of our staff as the
foundation for our work. This industriousness and professionalism was demonstrated
even further this spring when Youth Haven received glowing reviews and a three-year
re-accreditation from the Council on Accreditation (COA). This was based on the fact
that Youth Haven proudly upholds the high standards required by the COA for each of
its programs and for overall agency administration.
As we have for over 40 years, Youth Haven continues to operate Collier County’s only
emergency shelter for abused, abandoned and neglected children. Through this
work, we recognized that there was a critical and unmet need to serve our homeless
and runaway teens. In response to this, Youth Haven launched plans and is moving
forward with a new shelter and drop in center to meet this need.
With the resources provided by the success of our annual luncheon and other
fundraisers, we have begun renovations to the grounds and buildings of Youth Haven’s
beautiful 27-acre campus. The process of upgrading the safety and security of our site
will ensure that Youth Haven is truly a safe haven for the vulnerable and at-risk children
in our care. On behalf of the Board of Directors and the staff of Youth Haven, I want to sincerely
thank you for your support in the past, and ask that you continue to work with us toward
fulfilling our mission of protecting and empowering children in our area.

PART OF THE SOLUTION
For nearly two decades, Greenscapes has been Youth Haven’s trusted landscape
company. The outstanding Greenscapes team has donated countless hours and dollars
to make our campus green, lush and beautiful!
In the words of Linda Nelson, president of Greenscapes: “After the first two years of
providing landscape services to Youth Haven, CEO Steven Pruchansky and I made the
decision to provide our services free of charge. We love all that Youth Haven does for
abused children and at-risk families and felt it was our way of saying ‘thank you’ to an
organization serving our community.”
We thank you, too, Greenscapes, for being part of the solution, and for your incredible
generosity and commitment to making our campus beautiful year-round!
NICK GEORGE
After attending our 2013 Home Hope Healing Luncheon,
supporter Nick George wanted to help out. Having heard
that our Emergency Shelter was in dire need of updating,
he sprung into action. Nick painted the Shelter’s interior
and refinished all of the furniture. He then painted the
exterior of every building on the property.
“During the luncheon I was so moved by the incredible
generosity Youth Haven’s supporters showed that
afternoon,” explained Nick. “It compelled me to make
a difference for an agency that does such wonderful
work for our most vulnerable children and families. I am
honored to have been able to provide my services to a
truly magnificent organization.”
Nick, thanks to you, the entire Youth Haven campus has
been refreshed and renewed – and we were able to
save valuable resources needed for our programs.
