Welcome to Canvasworks!
On the following pages you will find a
sampling of floorcloth and mural designs created
by artist Lisa Curry Mair at her studio in
Perkinsville, Vermont. Large floorcloths and
historical murals are her
specialties. Museum
commissions are welcomed.

Every floorcloth or mural
made at the studio is a unique
piece of art. Each starts as a blank
piece of heavyweight canvas, then
gradually evolves into a beautiful
painting ready for each specific
customer's home.
"
The design process begins with input from
you. Colors, size and design are manipulated
using a variety of tools from freehand drawing to
Adobe Photoshop computer software. Nearly any
size floorcloth (up to 20 feet wide) can be
accomodated. When the final design is settled
upon, work begins on the actual canvas. The best,
heaviest weight canvas is used on all floorcloths.
Lighter weight canvas is used for murals which
are then applied to walls. Within weeks a
beautiful floorcloth or mural is created; finished
with an extremely durable sealer, and shipped to
your home.

Browse through these pages and keep in
mind that no two designs are alike. Even the
most basic checkerboard pattern can be an
interesting study in color, textural effects, rhythm
and flow. Complex mural designs can reflect days
gone by and take your home back 200 years.

Basic Checks Floorcloths
< Checks with Scroll
The central checkerboard pattern is surrounded by a
border of handpainted interlocking scrolls. Three
colors are used and can be marbled and/or
sponged to add textural interest.

Marbled Checks Runner with
Acanthus Leaf and Scroll

Basic checks are taken to the extreme
in this design. Perfect for a very
formal hallway runner.

< Ornamental Checks
Texture abounds with this sponged
darker color in the central tiles and the border and an
intricate stencilled motif on the lighter tiles.

Basic Checks in Historic Homes
Checks patterns were often used in homes in the
late 18th and throughout the 19th centuries.
Painted to look like more expensive marbled
floors, these floorcloths were frequently seen in
entryways and dining rooms.

Mariner’s Compass
This is one of the most traditional of
floorcloth designs. Since the first
American floorcloths tended to be made
from worn sails , nautical themes were
often used.

Historical Site in 2011.

Initially, stencil designs were painted directly on bare
wood floors. Not long after that the same designs
were being used on floorcloths.

Floorcloths in Today’s Home
Floorcloths are terrific in today’s home. Easy to clean, and tough as nails, they
stand up to rambunctious dogs, messy kids and sloppy eaters. Just clean with a
broom and a damp mop! Each Canvasworks floorcloth is protected with
multiple layers of an acrylic clear coat which is made for finishing boats and
cars. You’ll be shocked by their durability and ease of care.

A simple, very stylish design with center checks and a surrounding border of fruit and vines. Price

Classic Medallion
This design was derived from a needlepoint rug pattern. Lisa Curry Mair used colors to coordinate
with the customers’ Colonial dining room and made the floorcloth the perfect size for their
furnishings. A combination of freehand painting and stamping techniques were used to create this
one-of-a-kind floorcloth. Price Group E $40/sq.ft.

Historic New England staff to reproduce
museum objects for today's marketplace.

archives. A percentage of

directly to HNE to help
fund their fantastic programs.

Greek Key Border (top)
Based on a piece of linoleum from the
Field-Hodges House, North Andover,
Mass. The Field family (Sarah and
Jeremiah Field, and their two daughters,
Anna and Sarah) lived in the house
starting in the 1870s.

Bliss was a deacon in Rehoboth and served

Canvasworks Historic Colors
Each piece we create is customized for the individual client,
therefore we use a huge variety of colors. We try to make the
color decisions a little easier for you by offering 25 Historic
Colors for you to choose from. These colors are available in a
boxed “Swatch Kit” of 25 painted canvas squares. These allow
you to play with color combinations and see how the colors are
going to work in your home before you place your order.
If you would like to use other colors we can match any
requested color for a nominal fee of $1/sq.ft.

14. Handpainted Checks
Extreme Oriental
Like a frame on a hanging painting, a border on a floorcloth draws attention to the piece itself. The samples
shown here are just a few of the borders which I have incorporated into floorcloth designs. Any of these could be
used in a variety of color schemes. Generally, the more complex the central design of the floorcloth is, the more
basic the border should be, and vice versa.

Custom Sizes and Shapes
Thinking outside of the box!
This floorcloth was not made for this covered bridge! It was made to fit in two rooms with a
connecting hallway. The end closest to us fits into a bay window; the end to the back fits around a
fireplace hearth.
With careful measuring, Canvasworks can create a floorcloth of whatever size and shape is needed.

Murals
New from Canvasworks!
Taking the idea of painting on a large scale to a whole new level!
Since 2009 Lisa Curry Mair has been teaching a class at the Rufus Porter
Museum in Bridgton, Maine. Once exposed to the wonderful Porter murals,
there was no turning back. Since then she has discovered that she is related
to the painter and now she has taken it upon herself to continue with his
work!
Her murals are painted on canvas which means the customer does not have
to put up with the painter being underfoot for weeks on end. The mural is
prepared in Canvasworks’ studios and is shipped to the client to be hung by a professional paperhanger.
She develops detailed to-scale painted sketches on canvas for the client to approve prior to ordering,
so you know exactly what you’re getting. And she even pastes a photo of the sketch onto a photo of
your house’s wall, so you can experience the look of the mural in your home before the actual piece
is even started!

Folk Art
Paintings
Artist Lisa Curry Mair brings back the peace and tranquility
of days gone by. Her paintings evoke a sense of simplicity
and quietude. From historically researched paintings of
buildings and farm life to vast landscapes and rolling
mountains, her works are calm and relaxing.

Fireboards
Fireboards are high quality prints of Lisa’s originals mounted
on board and finished with a highly protective coating. Each is
made to the size which will best fit your fireplace opening.
New designs are added to the catalog regularly. Call or email us
for the latest list.
Stair Risers
There are endless possibilities for this application of Lisa’s artwork. This
particular stairway shows off 12 different horses. Each painting is done on canvas
and mounted to the riser using cove base adhesive. Choose a theme and have
Lisa get to work: your dogs, buildings in your town, lighthouses, you name it...

How to Order
1. Call the studio to discuss your ideas or fill out the “Request for Complimentary
Floorcloth/Mural Sketch” form and mail or fax it to Canvasworks. Photos, doodles,
magazine clippings and/or fabric swatches will help in the creation of your design, but are
not necessary if you see a design you like her or on the Canvasworksfloorcloths.com
website.
2. Canvasworks will send you a computer-generated layout of a proposed design for your
project. Review this design. If you like it, but would like to see a modification, call or email
the changes and a new version of your project will be worked out.
3. You will receive a modified rendering,. For pieces valued at more than $1000, sample
painted swatches will be provided if requested.
4. When you have settled on the perfect size,
colors and design for your project, you will be
asked to sign a Commission Agreement. A 30%
deposit is required to have your project
confirmed and placed on the Studio Work
Schedule.
5. Most floorcloths can be completed within 8
weeks of ordering, 12 weeks for murals, but at
times the schedule gets very busy and it may
take a little longer. When your order is received
we will give you an expected date of
completion. When your project is finished and
ready to be shipped, you will be notified of the
balance due, including an additional 6% for
shipping (not to exceed $75). When final
payment is received, your piece is carefully
rolled and packaged and is shipped via FedEx
Ground directly to your residence.

Following communication with the prospective client, Lisa Curry Mair will draw up one floorcloth or mural design for the
project based on the information supplied by the client. A purchase price of the proposed floorcloth/mural will also be
included.The design will be sent by email, web posting, fax or USPS to the client for his/her review within one week of the
initial contact.
The Client has one week from the time of receipt to review the design and suggest modifications to colors, size and/or design.
Some modifications may change the quoted price. Any changes in price will be noted on the second design layout. Lisa will
make one modification to the original design which will be included in the cost of the floorcloth/mural as quoted to the
Client.
The Client may request further modifications to the design, and agrees to pay Lisa Curry Mair an additional $50 per design
change for any design work done beyond the second design. Design fees are not refundable, even if the Client decides not to
place the floorcloth/mural order.
The client has the right to choose not to have the actual floorcloth/mural created. However, any design fees charged will not
be refunded.
All sketches and/or final designs are copyrighted and all rights are reserved by Canvasworks © Lisa Curry Mair and may not
be used by anyone including painters, floorcloth manufacturers or other artists. Under U.S. Copyright laws, unauthorized
reproduction and/or use is illegal and subject to fines.
When the Client and Lisa Curry Mair have agreed upon a Design for the Client’s project, a Commission Agreement will be
drawn up and signed by both parties, indicating details of the design, date of delivery, shipping costs and shipping address.

The studio and
gallery are open to
visitors.We do ask that you call a day or two in advance of your arrival. If you’re
thinking about having a custom floorcloth made, Lisa is happy to sit down with
her customers and talk about their specific needs for a floorcloth for their home.
Tour the house and see floorcloths in use in the kitchen, dining room, hallways
and bathrooms. There’s even a set of painted canvas stair risers to see too! Get some great ideas
about what will work best in your home.
The Gallery is the place to come to purchase completed floorcloths, samples, canvas blanks,
placemats, table runners, fireboards, canvas earrings and framed paintings. Peruse portfolios of Lisa’s
