Earlier this week Lake Illawarra High held it’s very
important Student Representative Council Induction
Ceremony where we formally welcomed our school
leaders for 2015/2016 into their positions.
It was great to see such a wonderful group of students
willing to take on the responsibility of being a school
leader and all that is involved with this. They have
already planned to undertake many exciting
initiatives over the next twelve months and I am sure
that our school will be an even better place to be
when these come to fruition.
I would personally like to congratulate our Vice
Captains Ashley Porter and Lily Stephenson and our
Captains Danielle MacDonald and Logan McMahon
for being elected into these very important positions.
Also I would like to thank Mrs Vanessa Garcia and
Mr Michael Pickard for the excellent job they are
doing mentoring our student leaders.
The vast majority of the students at Lake Illawarra
High are exceptional young people who do the
school, their family and most importantly themselves
great credit every day of the year.
Sometimes we as a school are reminded of this by
people from the community. One such occasion
occurred last week when we had a group of students
support other students at the Mini Olympics that were
held at Beaton Park for children with a disability.
I received nothing but praise from the community for
how our students conducted themselves and how
respectful and supportive they were of the children
they were looking after.
Well done to all of the students and teachers who
were involved with this day. I know that most of our
students behave like this on a daily basis but it was
great to see it recognised by the public.

As the Higher School Certificate examinations draw to a
conclusion, we would like to thank all our students for
their consideration and cooperation during this time.
Many students were empathetic and understanding
about the need for quiet and did their utmost to achieve
a calm environment for the nervous year 12 students.
We are approaching the ‘busy’ part of 2015, and
assessment weeks and yearly examinations are
imminent. I encourage parents and caregivers to ensure
that students have updated their classwork and
notebooks so that they are well prepared for revision.
This time can be very stressful so forward planning with
the students will help to alleviate the pressures it places
upon family life.
Please encourage your children to ask their teachers for
help if they are in doubt about the tasks or assessments.
We would like to instil pride in our school through the
use of the correct uniform and respect for our learning
environment. Kindly support us as we ensure that all the
students are in the appropriate clothing. If you need
assistance with attaining the correct school uniform,
please do not hesitate to contact the school so that we
can make the necessary arrangements.
A reminder that the schools phone policy ensures that
the focus is on learning rather than social media. Phones
are to be placed in school bags during class times, which
includes walking between classes.

Be Responsible

A First Aid course run by Surf Life Saving Australia
will occur at LIHS on 12th and 13th November. All
Year 10 students and interested Year 11 students are
invited to participate and the cost will be subsidized
by the school. Thank you Mr Hicks for your support.
This is an annual event for school students as the
skills used will provide life lessons, assist in certain
jobs and will show a student’s commitment to
ongoing learning beyond the classroom.
Notes have been distributed and limited places will
apply. Cost $35.
Many students have been enquiring about TAFE
courses in 2016. If considering full-time or part-time
study for next year, the following details have been
provided:
Choices Day 21st November - is when all 2016
courses semester 1 will open. This event is at
Wollongong Campus and students are invited to
attend, speak to teachers and enrol into a course with
the assistance of TAFE administration staff.
Applications and enrolments are all completed on
line at the TAFE Illawarra website:
www.illawarra.tafensw.edu.au
Again we are running a White Card Course at the
school at a subsidized cost. This will occur
Wednesday 25th November and there are only 20
spots available. Students from Year 10 up are invited
to be involved and students doing the 2016
Construction course or are wanting to do work
experience in this area will need to complete the
course. Notes can be collected from the Careers
office.
During the next couple of weeks, all Year 11 students
will be interviewed to ensure they are settling into the
HSC academic study. Future goals following the
HSC, dropping a subject and any questions they may
be having will be covered and hopefully the
transition into their final year at high school will be
successful.
A HSC assessment schedule will also be handed out
and students will know when future tasks are due and
how to be prepared.
Last week MCC and 3 Yr. 10 students attended the
Cows Create Careers presentation. We caught the
train to Wollongong and walked to City Beach
Reception Centre. Our school had 2 jersey calves for
three weeks. The cows are from Cedarvale Farm
Gerringong. We cared and learnt about rearing cows
and life on the farm.
Dairy Farmers Australia spoke about careers in the
Dairy Industry. We submitted an assignment on calf
raring. The competition is state wide. We participated
in activities where we had to design a robot. Jaydean
dressed up as our mechanical robot. Carl dressed up
as the scientist.
Mr Dyer also got in on the action.

On Thursday, 22nd October, Lake Illawarra High
School students visited Beaton Park Leisure Centre.
Our Harbour Centre students did our school proud
and participated in a variety of events. However, we
also had a small cohort of student volunteers from
our Sports Committee, Sports Lifestyle and
Recreation, and Exploring Early Childhood classes
who offered their time to assist student participants
with varying levels of disabilities.
These students were outstanding representatives for
our school. They demonstrated wonderful behaviour,
empathy and respect for their buddies, allowing them
to have a fabulous day. We received feedback, both
verbal and email, acknowledging their exemplary
contribution to the many students they assisted. The
Lake Illawarra High School community is very proud
and thankful for their efforts.

Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) plays an
important role in school culture, values and life at
LIHS. We have made a fantastic start to this term and
we would like to take this opportunity to
acknowledge the dedicated teachers and students
who are working to ensure that our school culture of
SAFETY, RESPECT AND RESPONSIBILITY is
maintained and supported. This term, the PBL team
and school leaders are asking you to encourage and
support your child to be ‘IN LINE ON TIME' to
class. This means that all students are expected to be
punctual to their classes and to roll call. Being "on
time" promotes learning and responsibility and
enables students to learn effectively. Educational
outcomes are more likely to be met by students being
present in all of their classes and missing minimal
time from face to face learning. Having your support
will assist us in maintaining outstanding values and
promoting positive behaviour in our students.

On Thursday the 22nd of October the Student
Representative Council attended a Grip Leadership
Conference at Win Entertainment Centre in
Wollongong .This was a fantastic conference for the
leaders of our school to further develop their skills in
areas such as event management and advertising,
public speaking and working together as a team. The
students had a wonderful day and did a lot of
networking with other SRC groups in the local area.
The SRC really made the most of the opportunities
presented to them on the day and Jacqueline Burns
even made it onto the stage to teach the audience
some fabulous new dance moves in a new team
building exercise, well done Jacqui!
As always the SRC did our school proud on the day
and should be congratulated on the enthusiasm and
energy they each brought with them to this beneficial
conference.

Congratulations to all Year 11 Business Studies
students on their efforts this year!
We have received the The Australian Mathematics
Competition certificates and given them to students.
Well done again to Claudia Balatti Year 7 and
Sarah Stephenson Year 10 whom both received a
credit placing them in the top 50% of students sitting
the competition.
Year 11 moving into Year 12: The classes are
basically settled now and are moving forward to their
first HSC assessment examination in week 8
(Extension also has another one in week 11). Can I
encourage preparation for these tasks, as now they
perform in the first assessment task has a huge
influence on their journey through to the HSC
examinations. It is an opportunity to start well and
gain confidence in their ability. We will give out a
revision to help with the preparation.
Years 7 and 8 have done their exams and we will use
them along with teacher input to determine classes
for next year hopefully before the end of the year. At
the moment we are still trying to catch up with some
students to do the test.
Year 9 notification and revision exams are given out
for the exam on Tuesday 3 rd November
Year 10 notification and revision exams are given out
for the exams on Mon/Tue 9th & 10th of November.
Numeracy activities are continuing in year 7 and we
are trying to move students up a group by
demonstrating that they now understand enough to
work on the next concept.

In Term 3, Year 11 Business Studies sent away their
Business Plan assignments to the University of
Newcastle’s Business Plan Competition. Schools
from all over the state entered the competition, with
over 454 participating students and over 300
submissions. Lake Illawarra High School students
performed extremely well in this competition and
should be proud of their efforts.
Whitney Cerasani placed in the Top 20 in the State
and was awarded a High Distinction for her Gioielli
Amore fashionable USB jewellery Business Plan.
Darnell Haselau, Amber Smith, Charlotte Northey
and Emily Grujevski also received High
Achievements for their Business Plans,
English Studies is a fantastic subject offered to all
students who would like a HSC, but who do not want
to go to University and is a great alternative to the
Standard and Advanced English course. It began as a
pilot program in 2010 and was offered to 76 NSW
schools. The course was a great success and was then
offered to all schools in 2011. More recently, the
English Studies program was extended into 2016 and
beyond.
There are four main objectives of the course, 1.
Students appreciate literature in various forms, 2.
Further develop literacy skills in reading, listening
and viewing and in writing, speaking and
representing, 3. Ways of working and 4.Learning.
For more information visit the BOSTES website
http://www.boardofstudies.nsw.edu.au/syllabus_hsc/e
nglish-studies-pilot-study.html . In the English
Studies course, students will complete four modules
over the four terms of the HSC course.
At Lake Illawarra High School, we commenced the
course with a module called ‘On the Road’ which
takes a close look at Travel Literature. During this
study, students will gain an appreciation of the way
travel is documented and recorded.
Students will complete a portfolio of their work
which will include visual representations of travel,
creative writing piece on Travel, plan a fictitious
holiday with a travel itinerary and more. They have
also posted questions about travel and placed them on
our Wonder Wall. These questions are used to create
discussion and spark the imagination.
Look out for our Travel Expo in week 10.
Your English Studies teachers,
Mrs Gorman and Ms Nicholson.
