There has been a career performance worthy of retiring a jersey at Prince of Peace Christian School. This jersey has been worn by Cori Schnell from 20122016. It seems ironically fitting that her jersey is #1! Number ONE typically indicates either being "the FIRST" or being "the BEST." In this case, it is BOTH!! Cori's jersey will hang in the new gym lobby at POPCS. To determine "the BEST," one must first examine the accolades received by Cori. Accolades are based on a consensus of subjective opinions by an experienced group of evaluators. Recognition began early in Cori's career. As a freshmen, she was named TAPPS District Freshman of the Year and 1st Team All District. Cori was the first sophomore to join the 1,000 point club and is the only POPCS player to have scored more than 2,000 points in a career. She continued maintaining her outstanding level of performance and received First Team All District throughout her entire high school career. To be worthy of First Team All State nomination, a player must be truly one of the BEST!!! Cori was selected for this prestigious award all four years... an incredible feat! Additional accolades include multiple District MVPs, Academic All State, and the Coaches MVP awards. Each year, Cori's name was listed among all the public and private schools' top statistical leaders in the Dallas area. Accolades alone do not merit retirement of a jersey. To retire a jersey there must be a statistical basis to make an objective comparison of performances. Cori Schnell is the FIRST Prince of Peace athlete to garner a Division 1 basketball scholarship. She was recruited by several Division 1 programs, but ultimately signed a prestigious scholarship to compete at the United States Military Academy. Cori has been at POPCS for 15 years. In addition to excelling in the game of basketball, she has been on the cross country, soccer and track teams as an Eagle. She has excelled in all 4 sports she has played at Prince of Peace earning district honors in each of them. All these accomplishments describe the unbelievable career of Cori Schnell. They did NOT happen by chance, but through hard work, positive attitude, and tireless dedication outside scheduled practices. The coaching staff have been so blessed to have had the privilege to share this journey with such a beautiful, deserving young lady who has a special talent. There will NEVER be another like her. Christ is Enough! Eli Mensing selected as a WINNER of the National Merit PepsiCo Foundation Scholarship Calling All 20162017 SENIORS!!! Junior Class Parent Meeting From approximately 1.5 million students who entered the 2016 National Merit Scholarship Program, only about 16,000 were named Semifinalists. They were designated on a state representational basis, in proportion to each state's percentage of the national total of graduating high school seniors. In order to advance in the competition and be considered for a Merit Scholarship award, a Semifinalist had to become a Finalist by fulfilling several requirements that included submitting a detailed scholarship application and presenting a record of very high academic performance. All winners of about 7,400 National Merit Scholarships are being chosen from the group of approximately 15,000 distinguished Finalists. One of our own is now a part of this very prestigious group! Eli H. Mensing has been selected as a winner of the National Merit PepsiCo Foundation Scholarship. Pursuant to an Agreement with National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC), this Merit Scholarship award is sponsored by The PepsiCo Foundation, Inc. Congratulations, Eli! We are so proud of this wonderful accomplishment! We will be having an important informational meeting this comin Monday, May 2, at 6:30 p.m. in the HS Commons. Health Fair Committee's Third Annual Health Fair The Health Fair Committee held the Third Annual Health Fair in the Fine Arts Hallway on Thursday, April 21. POPCS students displayed presentations on topics including diseases such as diabetes, various cancers, and heart disease. This year for the first time students chose ADD/ADHD, Swine Flu, and Smallpox to present at the Health Fair as well. Dr. Wendy MahoneJohnson and Dr. Givens met to discuss how best to prepare students for college and careers and the internship program was recommended by Dr. MahoneJohnson. Juniors and seniors in Anatomy and Physiology and Honor Physics were provided the opportunity to apply. Dr. Givens interviewed the interested candidates and five were selected. These candidates then filled out the paperwork with the Institute and Dr. MahoneJohnson set up a schedule. They will be taking part of the school term and into the summer to complete 16 hours of internship that involves all the functions of a medical operation admittance, diagnosis, treatment, pharmacology, and business, to name a few. The students are shown at the orientation, left to right, Kyra McIntosh, Grace Ro, Dr. MahoneJohnson, Samantha Fawcett, Camille Murray, and Daniel Herrin. This is a unique opportunity for our students and Prince of Peace gives special thanks to Dr. MahoneJohnson and her colleagues at the Plano Cancer Institute. School Supply Pack Orders for 2016 2017 Kirsten Gappelberg, the mother of Maddie Gappelberg in Grade 4, arranged for the fourth graders to visit the Mary Kay Global Manufacturing and Distribution Center in Dallas on Wednesday, April 20. It worked out perfectly with our Market Day unit that teaches students about how to create, market and sell a product or service. Preschool through Grade 5 parents may purchase prepackaged school supplies designed expressly for their child's grade requirements. Orders are due by Thursday, May 26, 2016. You can find the supply list, paper order form and order online by going to the PTF website. We encourage you to purchase your supplies online. If you choose to use the paper form, please ret to POPCS, Attn: Darla Koelewyn. For returning families, orders received after May 26, 2016 will have a 10% price increase. Please note that for some classes there are items that are not included in the school pack (the greyed items on the supply list). The list can be found on the PTF website. Most items can be purchased separately from the school store. The students were guided by Mary Kay workers throughout the facility and shown how a product, such as cologne, makes its way from huge barrels to beautifully packaged boxes. It was fascinating and enjoyed by all. At the end of the tour, everyone received a goody bag. The girls received lip gloss, hand lotion and eye shadow. The boys received unscented hand lotion and several cologne samples. Prior to our visit, Mrs.Gappelberg spoke to the fourth graders about her role at Mary Kay, how Mary Kay began and how it has impacted the lives of many women and men around the world. Grade 2 gets upclose and personal with animal visitors The High School Engineering class has begun 3D printing. Students download the program, Blender, onto laptop computers owned by the school. Students can use their own computers bu the complexity and memory required by these programs does no permit implementation on iPad or similar devices. Blender is on many programs available in which 3D objects can be constructe and then converted into files ready for printing. Second Graders were thrilled to have Michelle Kelly, sister of Grace Kelly, join them for an Animal Talk!!! She shared her "friends" and so many interesting facts about all of them! We were so thankful she could help us learn new things about the amazing animals God created! The first task was to create a simple design, which the students did. The second task was to create a final design that would advertise Prince of Peace Christian School. Tyler Scoggin had this fantastic idea to start a business selling custom frames, competing with Cartier, Chevallier, and Dolce & Gabbana, for example. His final design was completed and he w looking for the perfect male model to sell the frames. There was contest that this could only be Dr. Givens, who consented, for a very large fee, to make himself available. The new style frames shown in the picture. POPCS Fine Arts Director for Day Grade 3 student Olivia Rocco took over Mr. Matthews' job as Fine Arts Directorfor a day! She started the day with several meetings working with school leadership including Lower School Principal Mrs. Cleland. Headmaster Mr. Hahn took her to see an area of concern with prop painting getting on the exterior walls. Ms. Rocco then had a meeting with Theatre Director Mrs. DuPree and worked through the issue in a very constructive way. Thanks Olivia! Born to Travel!!! Students Pedal their way through the halls of POPCS the new tricycles for ELC and Preschool! Black Gold, Texas Tea: High School Chemistry Students Experiment with Oil The Scientific Design and Analysis class is where juniors and seniors spend the entire year developing projects and working longterm laboratories that sometimes require a week each. The latest idea came from a segment of Jay Leno's Garage where Mr. Leno visited the Circuit of the Americas (COTA) racetrack in Austin, Texas. COTA is home to the only Formula One race in the United States the Grand Prix of the US. In this video, Jay discussed how the composition and viscosity of oil was chemically prepared specifically, individually, and uniquely for each race car. With this in mind, the students were given the project of measuring the viscosity of different motor oils as a function of temperature 30W, 20W50, 10W40 and so on. As you might guess, when the lab started, most students in the class had no idea what oil was used for in a car, or why there would be any differences in oil, or what the various labels meant. Dr. Givens explains that this is the whole purpose of this class to expose students to new ideas and let them create solutions. He stated, "This turned out to be the messiest lab he had ever attempted with a class, Maddie Wagner got oil in her hair, Garrett Jibrail and Bo Sung Park spilled motor oil all over the table, and it was a mess to clean up each day no matter how I tried to envision what students might do." But, it turned out to be a great success. Messy it was, but the students voted it was one of the best and most fun labs they had ever done! Do you have sporting equipment your child has outgrown? Distilling the Essence of Knowledge in High School The Eagle Booster Club's mission is to promote and support the Prince of Peace middle and high school athletic programs. We are sanctioned by the school and athletic department for all sports. We are looking for volunteers for the 20162017 school year. We have positions with both big and small responsibilities. We have openings for people to serve on the board, as well as positions for people to coordinate and help sell POP merchandise, develop creative ideas for events, coordinate these events, fundraise, communicate board activities and needs to members, and promote school spirit through attendance at school sporting events. Please prayerfully consider your potential calling to become a part of this great organization. One of the most fun labs in PreAP Chemistry is the distillation of liquids. Distillation is an elaborate process with water flowing through coiled glass tubes, colored liquids boiling on the hot plate, and the distilled product falling out the cooled elongation, one drop at a time. In this PreAP Chemistry lab, students learn how to use laboratory equipment of a sophisticated nature. Only wellequipped schools like POPCS and only well disciplined students such as ours are able to permit such a laboratory experiment as this in high school. Most students of other schools must wait until college to have this opportunity so we are justifiably pleased that we have the right combination of students, equipment, and teacher skills. Beating the weather odds following a week of rain, April 25 turned out to be a great day "fore" golf and for Prince of Peace at the 2016 POPCS Classic Golf Tournament at TPC Craig Ranch! With its shotgun start, best ball format, players in the tournament maximized their time both on the practice range and on the course. "The inaugural Prince of Peace Christian School Golf Tournament was spectacular," said Dr. David Arai. "What a day! Thank you for combining a wonderful venue with a morethanworthy cause, along with great fellowship. We can't wait to be a part of next year's event!" Following the tournament, players enjoyed a reception and presentation in the TPC Craig Ranch clubhouse. TPC Craig Ranch owner and POPCS parent David Craig spoke to the group about our school and his family's experience here. "We are blessed and fortunate to choose which school our son attends," said Craig, "and the only school for us is Prince of Peace." He went on to describe how, from the receptionist up through our headmaster, Prince of Peace is a place filled with people who care for and support its students. Headmaster Chris Hahn also provided an update on the many capital improvement projects that have been underway or completed this year, including the outdoor concession stand and restrooms, new baseball/softball fields, and the new dining hall. We are pleased to announce that freshman golfer, Lauren Arai, has advanced to the State Tournament to be held on May 23 at Wildflower Country Club in Temple. At the end of the round on April 19, Lauren was tied with another golfer both having scores of 84. On deuce points, students served to students and faculty/parents served to faculty/parents. The teams that came out to participate included Suraj with Coach Littlejohn, Tyler Thompson and his mother, John Luis with his father and Cory Steinmann with Mr. Knotts. Entry fees for players were donated to POPCS. It was the first baseball and softball senior night held on campus and the first at Eagle Field. The softball team played their final home game vs Brook Hill featuring senior softball players Brianna Baird, Jessie Champ, Alyssa Cole, Maddie Gerhard, Natalie Hardin, Megan Johnson, Tessa Swanson and Alana Watts. Psalm 119:71 Most of us who have studied American History know the story of farmers in Alabama who were accustomed to planting one crop every year cotton. They would cultivate as much ground as they could and plant their crop. Year after year, they made their living by growing and harvesting abundant cotton crops. Then it happened. The dreaded boll weevil devastated the entire region and the cotton crop failed. The next year, many of the farmers mortgaged their homes to be able to prepare the fields, buy seed and plant another crop, hoping for a bountiful harvest. But as the cotton began to grow and mature, the boll weevil returned and completely destroyed the cropwiping out most of the farmers who grew cotton. The next year, the few farmers who survived decided to plant a different crop peanuts in hopes of regaining their livelihood. The new crop proved to be hardy and the market so ravenous that it enabled the farmers to pay off their debts from the previous years of crop failures. Every season thereafter, the farmers planted peanuts and prospered. They were so grateful that they spent some of their new wealth to erect a monument to the boll weevil in their town square. I guess they figured that if hadn't been for the pesky insect, they may never have planted the prosperous peanut crop. As believers, we too have the assurance and promise of God that He can use the "boll weevils" in our lives to produce something good. Romans 8:28 reminds us that "in all things God works for the good of those who love Him, who have been called according to His purpose." So, no matter what challenges come knocking at our door, we know that God is in control and working behind the scenes for our ultimate good. My prayer for each of us is that we know assuredly that we have been chosen by God. He loves us as only He can. He took the punishment we deserved and placed it on His Son. Jesus paid the price and declared, "It is finished". The Father gave Him New Life through the resurrection and through Jesus assures us of that New Life as well. Furthermore, He sent the Holy Spirit our Counselor, our Comforter, our Transformer who gifts us with saving faith and through His Holy Word, empowers us to overcome the evils of this world and discover new ways to live, to love and to serve.
