of the Society. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics, Fellow of
the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada and Fellow of the Royal
College of Physicians (UK). He is a past Chair of the Infectious Diseases Specialty
Training Committee, Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC).
He is a member of the Specialty Standards Review Committee, RCPSC. He is a
council member of the International Pediatric Transplant Association.
He is actively involved in clinical and research activities relating to
immunocompromised patients, including children with cancers and those who
have undergone organ transplantation. He is co-chair of the Caribbean-SickKids
Paediatric Cancer and Blood Disorders Project. This is a collaborative initiative
between The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids) and 6 Caribbean countries,
aimed at improving outcomes from childhood cancers in these countries (Jamaica,
Barbados, Trinidad & Tobago, The Bahamas, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, and
St. Lucia).

On behalf of Team Barbados at Toronto, and on my own behalf as Consul General
(ag) I want to offer sincerest congratulations to the Executive and members of
Barbados Ball Canada Aid for successfully hosting the Barbados Ball, now in its
tenth year. Ten years in the life of an organization is a major milestone; one that
should be celebrated. In this instance Barbados Ball Canada Aid has much to
celebrate. The Barbados Ball keeps getting bigger and better, attracting major
corporate sponsorship and more recently you have teamed up with The Hospital
for Sick Children (Toronto) in support of the Caribbean-SickKids Pediatric Cancer
and Blood Disorders Project.
Barbados Ball Canada Aid assists Barbadian youth in Canada by providing
scholarships under the BBCA John Rollock Memorial Scholarship Program
and makes significant donations towards health care initiatives that benefit
Barbados. Your organization has also collaborated with the Consulate General in
offering assistance to Barbadian nationals in distress; and through the Barbados
Ball, helps to promote Barbados as a premiere vacation destination.
I also take this opportunity to congratulate this year’s recipient of the Barbados
Ball Award, former Consul General at Toronto Kay McConney. Each year at the
Barbados Ball you present the Barbados Ball Award to a Barbadian residing in
Canada, for professional acclaim and/ or outstanding community service; and we
are pleased to acknowledge and congratulate your organization for recognizing
and celebrating these outstanding Barbadians. Congratulations also to Jerry
Kreindler and Marge Folkes who are being recognized for their outstanding
support to Barbados Ball Canada Aid.
The theme for 2013, “Where Nature Takes Your Breath Away” aptly describes
the breathtaking beauty of our beloved home land. In this regard I would like
to thank all patrons for their support over the past nine years and to encourage
you to visit Barbados and take advantage of our hospitality and warmth as you

A very warm welcome to our 10th anniversary edition of The Barbados Ball.
The past twelve months were both exciting and challenging. The Ball, our main fundraising
event, achieved unprecedented attendance in 2012 and we are very optimistic about its
future prospects and the continued success of our fundraising efforts.
Also, in August last year we received the Minister’s Leadership and Achievement Award at
the Diaspora Conference in Barbados. This award is presented by the Barbados Ministry of
Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade to the diaspora organization that demonstrates notable
achievements over a sustained period, which contributes to the economy or society of
Barbados. The award validates the work we do and we are proud to be recognized for our
contributions to Barbados.
In 2012 we took steps to take the organization to the next level by broadening the reach of
our two charitable causes: supporting healthcare and education.
We partnered with The Hospital for Sick Children in the Caribbean-SickKids Paediatric Cancer
and Blood Disorders Project launched this year to help improve the lot of children battling
these diseases across the Caribbean. In support of this project, we donated of $20,000 to
the Telemedicine facility and committed to donating $15,000 in 2013 and 2014 for nurse and
laboratory technician training. You will hear more about the Project from Dr. Upton Allen in
his speech this evening.
As part of our strategy for the growth of the BBCA John Rollock Memorial Scholarships
program, we extended the application due date to June 14th to facilitate the application
process; and starting this year the presentation of the scholarships will be a separate event
from the Ball.
This brings us to this evening’s celebration. With our theme being “Where Nature Takes Our
Breath Away”, we wish to draw your attention to the natural beauty of Barbados and I take
this opportunity to introduce you to Harrison’s Cave, which offers explorers a breathtaking
underground journey, and the Flower Forest, a peaceful and majestic garden of tropical
flowers and jungle-like rain forest. Whether you are a visitor or a resident of Barbados, you
should experience these natural attractions.
Finally I thank our sponsors, donors, Team Barbados, our Board of Directors, Advisory
Council, members and volunteers for their continuous support of our efforts to enrich lives
through our education and healthcare initiatives. I am also delighted to recognize the many

Caribbean.
Once described by SHE Caribbean magazine as “a dynamo in the foreign
service”, Kay McConney has held high-level diplomatic positions as the Deputy
Permanent Representative to the United Nations (UN) and Senior Trade
Negotiator at the World Trade Organisation (WTO). She’s the former Consul
General of Barbados in Canada and former Dean of the CARICOM (Caribbean
Community) Consular Corps in Toronto.
A resident of Oakville Ontario, Kay McConney’s return to the world of
private enterprise has brought her full circle to where her early career
began in marketing management, business development and international
development. “I’m doing what I enjoy most – helping people, businesses and
organizations to grow”, Kay says.
This gold medal winning international track and field athlete and honours
scholar now blazes new trails in business and Executive coaching, while
making time to give back to community as a resource for the Emerging Global
Leaders program of York University, Canada; a volunteer with the Canadian
Multicultural L.E.A.D organisation; and a mentor for young, emerging
leaders.

JERRY KREINDLER AND
MARGE FOLKES
JERRY KREINDLER was born in Barbados, and spent
his formative years on the island growing up at Maxwell
Coast, Christ Church and Cattlewash, St. Joseph, and as
a student at The Lodge School in St. John.
Jerry’s parents, Joseph and Sara Kreindler, came to
Barbados during the 1930’s and met and got married
on the island. Starting as a peddler selling from door to
door, Joseph Kreindler eventually established a group of
retail department stores in Bridgetown, including, The
Modern Dress Shoppe and GW Hutchinson on Broad
Street, The Gift Shop on Lower Broad Street, The Jubilee
Store on Swan Street, The Calypso Shop in Hastings and
the Wear Well Shirt Factory on Constitution Road. At its
peak in the 1970’s, J.C. Kreindler & Co. Ltd. employed
over 275 Barbadian citizens.
After completing high school in Montreal, Jerry went
on to complete his BA degree at McGill University, and
degrees in law at Queen Mary College, University of
London, England and the University of Ottawa.
Jerry moved to Toronto in 1981 and was called to the
Ontario Bar in 1982.
During his legal career he has worked in private practice
for two of Toronto’s best known law firms – Thomson
Rogers and Fasken Martineau – and as Chief Legal Officer
for two major Fortune 500 companies, Honeywell Canada
and Honda Canada. He is currently the Principal of
Kreindler Law, a business law firm, located in downtown
Toronto.
Jerry is a former member of the Board of Directors of
Kia Canada Inc., and was a Founding Director of the
Canadian Motor Vehicle Arbitration Plan (CAMVAP).
He also acted as a lead negotiator for the Canadian
automobile industry in the negotiations leading up to
the establishment of the National Automobile Dealer
Arbitration Plan (NADAP). He is a member of the
Executive of the Citizenship & Immigration Section of
the Ontario Bar Association. Since 2009, he has served
as a Member of the Advisory Committee of Barbados
Ball Canada Aid, organizers of the Barbados Ball.
In 1984, Jerry married the love of his life, the beautiful
and accomplished, Eve Lerner. Jerry and Eve have two
sons, Derek, an automotive journalist and Managing
Editor of the award-winning automotive website The
Truth About Cars (TTAC.com), and Graeme, a final
year student in the Honours Business Administration
program at the Ivey School of Business at the University
of Western Ontario.
MARGE FOLKES is originally from North
Vancouver, B.C. and moved to Toronto with her
family in 1964.
In 1974 Marge graduated from North Albion
Collegiate with honours and immediately
started working at a travel agency.
While working at the Travel Bug in Malton,
Ontario, Marge met her mentor and teacher,
Dora Yung, who inspired and educated her in
all aspects of the travel business.
Marge has travelled extensively throughout
the Caribbean, China, Europe, Canada and
the USA. As a big Michael Jackson fan, her
favourite trip every year is to California to
visit Neverland to honour his life and legacy.
As a result of her travels, she became a highly
respected and well-rounded travel consultant,
not only for the travelling public, but also as an
advisor to airlines and tour operators servicing
the Caribbean.
On December 01, 1988, Marge and Orville
Folkes opened Marville Travel, located in Port
Credit, Ontario. Marge is also a naturalized
citizen of Barbados and the agency is dedicated
to the promotion and servicing of the Barbadian
Diaspora. Marville Travel is a household name
in the Barbadian community, due to Marge’s
tireless promotional and philanthropic efforts
in the market.
As a travel agent, Marge is capable of checking
rates for 3 people, taking 5 reservations and
answering 5 incoming calls – simultaneously.
She takes full responsibility for the airline food,
traffic jams, rental car flat tires, weather, hotel
location and the national economy. Yes, you
know why, because she is a Travel Agent.

OUR MISSION at Barbados Ball Canada Aid (BBCA) is “To support initiatives
in healthcare and the education of our youth in Canada and Barbados and to
enhance in Canada, awareness of Barbados, its people, history and traditions.”
On Thursday February 14th we demonstrated our commitment to this mission
at the launch of the Caribbean-SickKids Paediatric Cancer and Blood Disorders
Project, through the presentation of a donation of $20,000 to the Project. In
addition BBCA pledged to donate $15,000 annually from the proceeds of our
fundraising activities, including the annual Barbados Ball. The donation of
$20,000 will be used to fund the setting up of the Barbados Telemedicine unit,
and future donations will fund the training of Barbadian nurses and laboratory
technicians at SickKids Hospital.
Held at SickKids Hospital, the launch was attended by many Canadians of
Caribbean origin, including Dr. Upton Allen, Division Head, Infectious Diseases
at SickKids, a native of Jamaica. Dr. Allen, together with Dr. Victor Blanchette
of the Division of Haematology/Oncology at SickKids, a native Barbadian (Dr.
Blanchette retired from the position of Head of this division in 2012), are coleaders of the Project.
Speaking to the importance of the Caribbean-SickKids Paediatric Cancer and
Blood Disorders Project, Dr. Julia Alleyne, Chair of BBCA’s Healthcare Initiatives
Committee, commented: “It is very inspiring to work alongside the dedicated
professionals in the Caribbean-SickKids Paediatric Cancer and Blood Project. This
project is focused on children and families at a critical time in their lives when
providing excellent diagnostic and treatment services with compassionate care
will long be remembered. With our donation dollars, healthcare in Barbados
through the Queen Elizabeth will be supported and strengthened giving staff
an opportunity to enhance training in Toronto and establishing a telemedicine
center for ongoing education. The BBCA Board of Directors and Members are
thrilled to be involved in this leading edge international project and proud of this
unique opportunity for fundraising.”

Paediatrics at the University of Toronto. He is Chief, Division of Infectious Diseases,
Hospital for Sick Children. Dr. Allen is a Senior Associate Scientist in the Research
Institute, Hospital for Sick Children. His primary appointment is with the Division
of Infectious Diseases, Department of Paediatrics at the Hospital for Sick Children.
He is also a professor, Institute of Health Policy, Management and Evaluation,
Dr. Allen received his medical degree from the University of the West Indies,
Kingston, Jamaica. He received pediatric training at the Hospital for Sick Children,
Toronto. His subspecialty training in Infectious Diseases was also done at The
Hospital for Sick Children. He obtained further research training leading to a

BORN IN GRENADA and raised in Canada, Jemeni earned her stripes in her
teens as the only female member of the country’s most popular Hip Hop
show “The Powermove” on CKLN, eventually co-hosting and co-producing
the show with DJX. At 19 she became the Music Director of the entire station
and moved on to create a female-fronted hip hop show called “Droppin
Dimez” with DJ Stach.
In the early part of her career, Jemeni cut her teeth in the field of music
journalism doing radio and print interviews with Hip Hop artists like the
late Notorious B.I.G., A Tribe Called Quest, WuTang Clan, Lil Kim, Redman
and The Fugees. At the same time she was also becoming one of the city’s
most popular spoken word artists and performance poets, sharing the stage
with the likes of Erykah Badu, Jill Scott, Angie Stone, Michael Franti, and Les
Nubiennes.
Her poetry has been published in various anthologies and periodicals, with one of her most criticallyacclaimed poems, the politically charged “America Eats its Young”, published in the Def Jam Anthology
“Bumrush the Page – A Def Poetry Jam”. Jemeni has also delved into acting. She has appeared on Drop
the Beat, Da Kink in My Hair, Queer as Folk, worked with Ving Rhames and Chazz Palminteri on the
remake of Kojak, and had a recurring role on the Showtime Series Soul Food. Jemeni is a regular fixture
on Muchmusic as a pop critic on the show “Video on Trial”, and a frank and funny commentator on
CP24′s Sex Matters. She was also the poet laureate for CBC TV’s Play.
Between red carpets and poetry slams, she found time to play a pioneering role as one of the original
radio personalities on Canada’s first urban station FLOW 93.5, where she kicked it for five years with
stars like Justin Timberlake, Mariah Carey, Denzel Washington, 50 Cent, Janet Jackson and Jay-Z, while
charming up to half a million listeners in Toronto each and every morning. When not working on her
website www.nomoredatingdjs.com she runs reading circles with Literature for Life and Women
Moving Forward empowering young women in at-risk communities. Jemeni’s latest offering is a cd
collection of her various spoken word/music collaborations with artists around the globe appropriately
titled… “Feature Trippin”.
ROGER GIBBS & BANJA RUK-A-TUK ENSEMBLE
ROGER GIBBS is a singer, guitarist and recording artist who
composes, arranges and performs Caribbean Acoustic and Calypso.
He was the lead singer of the Sandpebbles, a popular 70’s dance
band in the Caribbean, and came to Canada in 1986. Roger has
performed across Canada and the Caribbean and been a member
of the performing company COBA (Collective of Black Artists)
since 1995. He was the Musical Director for Theatre Archipelago’s
productions of I, Marcus Garvey (2010 and 2011) and has released
three CD’s: Spirit of Calypso (1999), Calypso Classics on Guitar
(2005), and his latest with his band Shak Shak titled Hot So.
Banja Ruk-A-Tuk Ensemble is Canada’s only traditional Barbadian tukband. Led by Roger Gibbs, the
band features Sammy Clarke (kettle or snare drum), Percy Pilgrim (bass drum), and Trevor “Baje”
Walcott (penny whistle). All are accomplished Bajan-born musicians with impressive careers who get
together to keep alive and celebrate a unique style of traditional Barbadian music that goes back over
150 years. Banja Ruk-A-Tuk Ensemble is accompanied by stilt dancer Robert Faulkner of Swizzlestick
Theatre.

THE VENERABLE PETER FENTY

April 6, 2013 was a historic day in the life of the Anglican Church in Canada. On that
day, The Ven. Peter DeCourcy Fenty, Archdeacon of York and Executive Assistant to the
Archbishop of Ontario and Bishop of Toronto was elected a Bishop of the church. He will
be ordained and consecrated for the office on June 22, 2013. He will become the first black
person to be elected to this office in Canada.
The Bishop-Elect, a native of Barbados and graduate of Codrington College and the
University of the West Indies, was ordained a deacon on June 11, 1975 and a Priest later
that year in December 2, 1975. He completed graduate studies at Huron College, London,
Ontario, in 1982.
Prior to coming to Canada, he exercised his priestly ministry in Barbados, serving as Rector
of St. Patrick’s, Christ the King and St. Matthias and at the highest level in the councils of
the church there.
His service to the wider community in Barbados included working as a part-time teacher
in in secondary schools, guest tutor at Erdiston Teachers’ Training College and part-time
tutor at the Barbados Community College. He was also the Deputy Chairman of the Board
of Management of the Barbados Community College and a radio talk show host.
In Canada, he was the Rector of St. Lawrence Church, Montreal, and St. Joseph of Nazareth,
Bramalea. Mirroring his ministry in Barbados, he serves at the highest levels of the Church
in Canada and makes his contribution to the development of the wider community. He
served as a member of the Board of the Black Community Council of Quebec and the
Board of Directors for Leap of Faith Together (LOFT), Toronto.
Peter’s nominators said of him “he will bring distinct gifts to the College of Bishops. In
addition to being a consensus builder, he is not afraid to take prophetic stands on issues of
importance in both the church and the larger society. His considerable experience working
with ethnic and racial communities has provided him with a unique lens with which to
advocate for and work with the many different peoples that make up the increasing
multicultural population of our city and church.”
Following his election, Archbishop Colin Johnson said “Bishop-elect Fenty will bring a wide
variety of gifts and a depth of experience to the job. Peter is a wonderful, passionate
preacher. He’s been trained in a tradition of taking the scripture and making it relevant
to people’s lives, and of building enthusiasm and encouraging people to engage with
their faith. Peter is an extremely good facilitator. He’s able to go into a whole variety of
situations, listen carefully to what’s going on, and help both analyze it and build a group of
people who are able to address issues. He’s able to build bridges between different groups
of people. He’s a very pastoral person. He listens well and prays with people and helps
them in times of trouble and helps them celebrate their joys.”
Bishop-elect Peter has been appointed the area bishop of York-Simcoe, one of four
episcopal areas that comprise the Diocese of Toronto. It is located in the north-central part
of the diocese. It has 47 parishes that contain 67 congregations with 55 active clergy.
He is married to Angela Allman, an educator. They are the parents of André, who is married
to Jacquelyn, and Peta-Anne, whose fiancé is Mubarak.

EXPRESSION OF BARBADIAN

TRADITIONAL MUSIC and dance are powerful reminders of the types of art that
uplifted our bodies and spirits long ago. The Barbados tukband is a musical
expression that reveals how early Black Barbadians enjoyed themselves at social
events and on special holidays. Based on regimental bands of the British military,
these roaming groups were made up of bass drum, kettle (snare) drum, penny
whistle and triangle; they meandered through local villages and neighborhoods,
playing improvised versions of popular calypsos and folk songs. The passing
tukband’s rousing music drew everyone, especially children, out of their homes
to see their spontaneous performances; they were usually accompanied by one or
more African-inspired costumed dancers such as the Muddah Sally, Shaggy Bear,
Donkey Man or Stiltman.
The tukband owes its survival to the Landship societies, a popular grassroots
movement that sprang up and flourished in Barbados after the abolition of slavery
in 1834 and which nurtured the music and dances in our folk culture that were
frowned upon by polite society. The Landship gave newly-liberated Bajans a vital
social organization they could join, one they could turn to in times of need. Using the
structure and discipline of the British Navy, these self-help organizations were how
the poor found a way to organize themselves and express their sense of community
in a harsh social environment. Parades and dances like the maypole, jig, hornpipe
and other dances - along with tukband music - are all part of the Landship’s colourful
repertoire of cultural activities that has enriched Barbados social life.
The tukband’s music – the fiery and syncopated rhythms and martial instrumentation
– along with its cast of characters, teach a great deal about Barbados’ history and its
West African and British roots. It is a living expression of our people’s creativity and
resiliency. Today, tukbands perform during the island’s festivals such as Crop Over,
the Holetown Festival, and at Christmas, New Years and Bank Holidays.

“Service to humanity is the best work of life”
At the Harry Jerome Awards held at Metro Toronto Convention Centre on April 27th this year,
Grantley Einstein DeClaire Morris (“Grant Morris”), received the Lifetime Achievement Award in
recognition of his tireless and dedicated service to the Barbadian community in Barbados, the
wider Caribbean community, and Ontario.
Well known in the community for his philanthropic activities, Grant believes in the Jaycees creed
by which he was inspired as a young man in Barbados: “That earth’s great treasure lies in human
personality / And that service to humanity is the best work of life.”
A brief sampling of Grant’s efforts on behalf of various charities, educational institutions and
community associations illustrates his care and concern for the lives of others:
UNIVERSITY OF ONTARIO INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY (UOIT) SCHOLARSHIP
ENDOWMENT. In 2005, Grant established a scholarship endowment at UOIT with a pledge
to raise $1,000,000.00. To date, including matching contributions from the Government of
Ontario, the endowment stands at over $210,000.00.
CARIBBEAN EVENT. Every summer since 1997, Grant Morris and Patricia Sammy have
opened up their home to over 400 friends, supporters and members of the Barbadian/
Canadian community in Toronto. All of the expenses of the Event are paid for by Grant
personally. Over the years funds raised at this event have been donated to organizations
such as the University of Ontario Institute Of Technology, the Diabetic Association of Ontario
and the York University Scholarship Fund.
BARBADOS BALL CANADA AID. Grant has been an active member of BBCA since its
inception in 2004. He has served on its Board of Directors and executive and was Chair of
the Barbados Ball.
THE DOWNSVIEW YOUTH COVENANT. Since 2008, Grant has raised over $52,000 to
fund the outreach activities of the Downsview Youth Covenant, a Toronto based community
organization sponsored by the Anglican Church of St. Stephen. This organization provides
social and youth outreach services to young people living in Toronto’s “Jane-Finch corridor”.
OTHER CHARITABLE ACTIVITIES. In addition to the foregoing, during the past 10 years,
Grant has raised over $150,000 for a variety of other charities and deserving individuals
and causes, including: Canadian Arthritis Society, Harrison College and Queen’s College, AIDS
Awareness Programs in Barbados, the Harry Jerome Scholarship Fund and the Grenada
Disaster Relief Fund.
Grant is the recipient of the following awards:
The Unsung Hero Award presented by Barbados Ball Canada Aid.
The Barbados Independence Award for Philantrophy presented by the Barbados Country
Team Toronto.

In April 2012, the University of Ontario Institute of Technology dedicated a plaque at an
on-campus ceremony held to honour Grant’s fundraising efforts for the university.
The African Achievement Awards’ Excellence in Community Service Award; and
The Harry Jerome Awards’ Lifetime Achievement Award.
