INSPIRATION
DECKING
NATURAL LIVING
Wood from responsibly managed forests is the ultimate ‘green’ building material. As a tree grows,
it removes and stores carbon dioxide from the air, helping reduce carbon levels in the atmosphere.
Harvesting and using the timber locks away carbon and prevents its release back into the atmosphere.
Replanting the forests continues the cycle of removal and storage.

PERGOLAS
New Zealanders have always loved the great outdoors, and a lot more effort is going
to designing the ‘Outdoor Room’. A stylish pergola can enable your deck to become an
extension of your in-door living space.
GLUE LAMINATED POSTS
Although more expensive, laminated
posts are stronger and stay straighter
than solid wood posts. They are
available in a number of different
lengths and can be purchased natural or
pre-primed.
SOLID WOOD POSTS
Solid wood gauged posts are taken out
of the sap wood of a tree and although
some movement is expected the posts
usually stay relatively straight. The posts
are treated to H4 or 5 and are very
strong and durable.
RAILS OR BOARDS
Rails or boards come in standard
150mm, 200mm, 250mm and 300mm
x 50mm sizes and can be used to
achieve different effects. They can be
stained or painted to create a modern
look.

PROTECT YOUR TIMBER DECK
7 REASONS TO
CHOOSE CD50 EXTREME
TIMBER OIL
PROTECTION OIL THAT MAKES YOUR DECK LAST LONGER
CD50 Extreme is the timber protection of choice when it comes to harsh conditions
CD50 Extreme is ideal for decks, outdoor furniture, thick timber (logs, posts, beams, slabs)
and extreme situations (high humidity, dampness).
1. Penetrates deep inside the timber –
protects from the inside out.
2. Stabilises timber – helps stop warping,
splitting and twisting.
3. Is not a film – does not peel or flake.
4. Helps control mould and fungus and
the bacteria that cause rot.
5. Enhances the character of the timber –
doesn’t cover it up.
6. Easy to use and maintain – just wash
and re-apply.
7. Use clear (to silver naturally) or with one of
the vibrant colour tones.

TIMBER FENCING - CUSTOM
There are many different fence designs. With a little imagination inspirational fences can
be built out of different types and profiles of timber.
CEDAR PALINGS
Cedar is a long lasting stable timber. Having
already proven itself as weather boards, there
are a number of profiles that can be turned
into stunning modern looking fences. Custom
profiles and sizing available on request.

JENKIN’S FENCE SYSTEM
A durable and hard wearing fence that
also had its origins in weather boards,
the Jenkin’s fence system has a classic
look to complement the traditional NZ
weather board home.

HORIZONTAL FENCES
A recent trend has been towards using timber
horizontally rather than vertically. Designers
are also experimenting with different
materials and profiles such as Kwila decking.

TIMBER SELECTION GUIDE
CONSUMER INFORMATION AND HANDLING GUIDE
FOR CCA PRESSURE TREATED TIMBER
The Chromated Copper Arsenate (CCA) preservative used to treat outdoor radiata pine reacts
with the wood to form chemical complexes that are highly insoluble and leach resistant. The
CCA preservative penetrates deeply into and will remain in the wood for a long period of
time. However, some preservative may migrate from the preserved wood into surrounding soil
over time and there may also be incidental contact with skin during construction or use.

RECOMMENDATIONS
• Do not burn preserved wood
(see disposal information below).
• Wear a dust mask (P1 or better –

should be cleared up and disposed
of after construction.
• After working with the wood wash
exposed areas thoroughly.

TIMBER RETAINING WALLS
RETAINING WALLS
In recent times retaining walls have become an integral part of any garden design. They are
perfect for creating a focal point in your garden, highlighting a special feature or levelling off
areas to create a flat lawn. Retaining walls are great for creating terracing and raised gardens
where space is limited. On a steep site, they give your garden structure, highlight natural
features and help control soil erosion. Best of all, they’re low maintenance, easy to build and
they last for years.

SLEEPERS
There are a variety of sleepers available with the most common being hardwood,
macrocarpa and radiata pine. It is vital to assess if the sleeper application is purely aesthetic
in which case any species will do, accepting that untreated sleepers will breakdown over
time. However, if the use is for more structural retaining applications and longevity is
required then it is recommended that treated radiata pine sleepers are used.

STEP 2
MEASURE YOUR WATER SUPPLY
Before you go any further you need to
know how much water each tap can
supply per minute – this will determine
how many pipe lines or zones you may
need based on watering type.
Using a 9L bucket, turn each tap on full
then time how many seconds it takes to
fill the bucket.

LANDSCAPE DESIGN PLANNER

DESIGN HINTS FOR YOUR LANDSCAPE PROJECT
NOTES
1. Scale – Use a larger scale e.g. one square equals a 0.5M x 0.5M area if you
are designing your whole backyard or a smaller scale e.g. one square equals a
0.2M x 0.2M if you are focusing on one part of your section.
2. Draw in the buildings and permanent structures first.
3. Note on the drawing where North is so that the direction of natural occurrence
like sunlight, shade, drainage and the prevailing winds can be noted.
4. Make plenty of notes on subjects such as: What will the area be used for
(playing, relaxing, gardening)? What features do you want to highlight or hide?
5. Come into your local PlaceMakers Branch and talk to our staff about different
options on landscaping material.
