It’s never too soon
to call HospiceCare.
“Three years ago I called HospiceCare for my mother. She was eligible for
their services then and remains eligible today. This entire time Mother has been
living at home with their help.
“I’m an advocate for my mother … and HospiceCare is an advocate for me.
HospiceCare makes the time you have with your loved one a beautiful experience,
and without them, it wouldn’t be the same. Together we work as a team—Mother,
myself and HospiceCare. I no longer have to worry. One call and HospiceCare is
there without question.
“Call HospiceCare. It’s never too soon
to learn more about their services.”

Baby Boomers 2010
1946 to 1964 –
Look out, world, it’s
the baby boomers
By Jay Rath for Capital Newspapers
Once upon a time, the generations
born in the two decades after World
War II looked toward building a better world – or at least to Slinkies, Silly
Putty, television and rock.
Fast forward to 2010 and the recession. “The biggest and most serious
issue that baby boomers have right now
is outliving their money,” says John
Vardallas. “That is huge.”
Vardallas is founder and CEO of
“TheAmericanBoomeR,” an international consulting firm based in
Madison. He previously worked for two
decades as director of national training
for CUNA.
Vardallas’ approach to aging is both
serious and lighthearted; his Web site,
www.theamericanboomer.com, sells two
styles of T-shirts reading “50 is the new
30” and “60 is the new 40.”
“I’ve always wanted to help enable
other individuals and organizations
reach their potential,” he says. “We’re the
generation that’s redefining aging.”
Not only do people live healthier longer – if baby boomers are going to get
through the recession, “We can’t think
old,” he says.
In March, Vardallas’ firm held
BoomerFest, a Madison community
expo. His Web site similarly offers information on a variety of resources for
what Vardallas calls “the sandwich generation.”
“We’re taking care of the generation
ahead of us – our parents,” he notes,
“as well as the generation behind us,
because so many of our children are
graduating high school and college and
can’t find jobs, and are moving home.”
There’s no formal, accepted definition of “baby boomers.” Some grew
up watching “Howdy Doody” in black
and white, while others watched “The
Partridge Family” in color. However, the
term roughly refers to the approximately 76 million Americans born between
1946 and 1964, according to the United
States Census Bureau.
“We’re not all cut out of the same
cloth or face the same issues,” Vardallas
says. “There’s a generation of boomer
who’s [in their 40s], who could be the
child of a 62-year-old boomer.”
But, for the most part, the concerns
of the baby boomer generations are different only in urgency. “The economy,
health care, careers and employment are
huge right now,” says Vardallas. While
younger boomers have decades ahead
of them, “the older boomers such as
myself, being 61 years of age, are looking at retiring in the next couple years.
The issues are much more stark.”
The best thing a baby boomer can do,
he says, is to stay fit physically, emotionally and intellectually. Fortunately for
most, Vardallas says, the right attitude is
already in place.
“Baby boomers want to stay engaged,
stay active, and we want to keep learning,” he says, “no matter how old we
get.” n

Web site.

HAVING MORE RETIREMENT ACCOUNTS
IS NOT THE SAME
AS HAVING MORE MONEY.
When it comes to the number of retirement accounts you have, the saying
“more is better” is not good to follow. In fact, if you hold multiple accounts
with various brokers, it can be difficult to keep track of your investments and
to see if you’re properly diversified.* At the very least, multiple accounts usually
means multiple fees.
Bringing your accounts to Edward Jones could help solve all that. Plus, one
statement makes it easier to see if you’re moving toward your goals.
* Diversification does not guarantee a profit, nor does it protect against loss.
To learn why consolidating your retirement accounts to Edward
Jones makes sense, call your local financial advisor today.
