KING KHALID INTERNATIONAL AIRPOR T (KKIA)
RIYADH, KINGDOM OF SAUDI ARABIA
With an annual population increase of
9%, Riyadh is one of the fastest growing
cities in the world. To keep up with this
expansion, KKIA are integrating Terminals
3 and 4 to create a world class, fully IATA
compliant mega terminal that will increase
capacity over 100% from 12 million to
25 million passengers each year.
BuroHappold Engineering brought
extensive experience of Saudi aviation to
this project, providing the engineering
knowledge necessary to realise the
architect’s vision across all aspects of the
design from building services strategy,
the redevelopment and enhancement
of airport services, and improving the
energy efficiency of the terminals by
incorporating the benefits brought by
the surrounding environment while
minimising any negative impact.
We provided intelligent, energy efficient
engineering solutions that will realise
our client’s aim to achieve a LEED Silver
Award. The buildings already benefit from
large amounts of indirect light, so our
design included passive measures such
as roof canopies and external shading as
simple yet cost effective ways to lower the
cooling loads of the terminals. Given the
climate, we also explored likely sources of
renewable energy, such as solar energy
and solar thermal hot water, to further
reduce the carbon footprint of the new
terminal building, and the life-cycle costs
of the project.
