EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR'S REPORT:

We are currently hard at work in the CPFJ Office arranging all the details of production for the Fall
Concert Series that begins September 9th - please save the dates for this year’s Series and join us for
great programs of world class jazz!
.
CENTRAL PA JAZZ FESTIVAL REVIEW:
Thurs., Aug 11: We had a well attended Kickoff Concert at Strawberry Square featuring our own CPFJ
Youth Band - after playing the opening concert they made three stops with the JazzMobile supplied by
the Brenner Family of Dealerships - the Homeland Center on N. 6th Street, the Neighborhood Center on
North 3rd Street and the dock on City Island, It began raining as we left Strawberry Square and
continued for the rest of the afternoon, so all of the outdoor performances were moved inside. The
equipment on the JazzMobile was soaked from the downpour but the show must go on and the kids
played very well at Homeland and the Neighborhood Center to very receptive audiences. There was no
alternate venue for the last site so we called it a day. The Riverboat Cruise was to feature a Philadelphia
duo - (violinist) Diane Monroe and (pianist) Tom Lawton but Diane was unable to attend due to illness
and the music continued with a substitute saxophonist and Tom Lawton.
Thurs., Aug 11: The Live Recording Session at the new Susquehanna Art Museum’s Main Gallery
featuring saxophonists Tim Warfield and Jonathan Ragonese was an amazing performance in a very cool
space and there were some serious sparks flying between the two artists! We were all so inspired that we
are considering hosting a “new music” series in this venue - stay tuned!
Fri., Aug. 12: Our annual Jazz Party was held at River City Blues Club with great attendance and
inspiring music - four bands on the two floors of the River City Blues Club played from 7PM - 12:30AM
- Diane Wilson Bedford , Jim McFalls, Dred “Perky” Scott, Joshua Davis, Todd Harrison, Ryan
Kauffman, Kevin Myers, Peter Paulsen , Larry Marshall , Jonathan Ragonese, Alex LoRe, Paul Bratcher,
Mark Hunsberger, Ryan Kuhns, and Kirk Reese were all in top form and the fans totally enjoyed the
event.
Sat., Aug. 13: Jonathan Ragonese held an informative question-answer session with CPFJ Board member
Bill Anderson on jazz improvisation at Café 1500’s meeting room at 11:30; our Festival Jam Session at
the Hideaway in Mt. Gretna had to be cancelled due to the inclement weather; we partnered with Gretna
Music to produce our Festival Concert featuring Houston Person’s Quartet and the Russell Malone
Quartet - the concert in the Mt. Gretna Playhouse was absolutely top notch with the group’s masterful
leaders and great sideman highlights from pianist Bruce Barth and drummer Willie Jones III .
Sun., Aug. 14 Jazz Picnic at Indian Echo Caverns (Hummelstown PA) with 5 bands from 1-7pm.
Guitarist Jay Umble’s Quartet opened the event; our Youth Band directed by Ron Waters performed
splendidly as did singer Nancy Reed’s Quartet with Steve Varner at the bass, world renowned pianist Jim
Ridl, and drummer Larry Marshall. Drummer Peter Lazorcik headed a quartet with area veterans Tom
Strohman, Kevin MacConnell & Andy Roberts and showed great progress following his first year at
Manhattan School of Music. No Last Call, Harrisburg’s hit & run street band closed the Picnic with their
unique brand of
Mon., Aug. 15: The River City Blues Club hosted the River City Big Band and special guests Cathy
Chemi (voc) & Harrisburg native saxophonist Rob Middleton currently leads the NYC Birdland Big
Band - the band was swinging and it was great to hear Rob again - we had a ball!
.
This year’s Festival was very successful musically, but not so wonderful financially as Mother Nature
blessed us with very hot temperatures during our money making event on Saturday & Sunday. It was
over 90 degrees when the first notes rang out from the Gretna stage and the excessive heat warrnings
surely curtailed many jazz fan’s plans. As a result, our attendance was very low for both the Concert and
Picnic - one of the risks we take when hosting outdoor events. The Board will be considering options for
upcoming Festivals at the meeting this September - if you have any ideas or recommendations for future
Festival events, sites, etc., please drop us a line and share your thoughts.
.
Thanks for answering the Festival Support appeal again this year - and thanks to all of our Festival
Program advertisers and donors. A special thanks again to Bob Pugliese and Premier Wealth
Management for their generous contribution to the annual Festival.

CENTRAL PA FRIENDS OF
2016 FALL CONCERT SERIES
We kick off this series on September 9thwith our third year of hosting an evening at the Dauphin
Co. Jazz & Wine Fest at Ft. Hunter Park. Two groups will be appearing - the legendary jazz organist
Dr. Lonnie Smith and his Trio, and an ensemble lead by rising star steel pan player - Leon Foster
Thomas. Sponsor, Corporate and Life Members of CPFJ will be mailed tickets. All other members
must order tickets from the Dauphin County Parks and Recreation website. Tickets are $30 and
include all three days of the Festival with wine tastings and much more! We are grateful to the
Dauphin County Commissioners for the generous grant that funded this event. Don’t forget to bring
a blanket or portable chairs - the concert is under a very large tent - rain or shine. Parking is
available on the park’s grounds - we suggest coming early to get best seats - gate opens at 5pm.
Dr. Lonnie Smith is an unparalleled musician, composer, performer and recording artist. An authentic master and guru of the Hammond B-3 organ for over five decades, he has been
featured on over seventy albums, and has recorded and performed with a virtual “Who’s Who” of the greatest jazz, blues and R&B giants in the industry. Consequently, he has often been
hailed as a “Legend,” a “Living Musical Icon,” and as the most creative jazz organist by a slew of music publications. Jazz Times magazine describes him as “a riddle wrapped in an enigma
wrapped in a turban!” Always ahead of the curve, it is no surprise Dr. Smith’s fan-base is truly worldwide. The Doctor’s first gigs were at Buffalo’s hottest jazz club, the Pine Grill, where he
rapidly garnered the attention of folks like Jack McDuff, Lou Donaldson & George Benson. George Benson was looking for an organist for his quartet and hired Lonnie. The group soon
relocated to New York City, where they quickly established a reputation as innovators throughout the area. After appearing on several Benson albums, Lonnie made his first recording as a
leader “Finger Lickin’ Good” for Columbia Records in 1966. Shortly thereafter, Smith recorded with saxophonist Lou Donaldson, for whom Lonnie would appear on several epic Blue Note Lps,
including the million-seller, Alligator Boogaloo. Blue Note clearly liked what they heard and inked the organist to his own recording contract, a deal which would produce the soul jazz
classics “Think!”, “Turning Point”, “Move Your Hand”, “Drives” and “Live at Club Mozambique” (released many years later). Since leaving the Blue Note stable in the ‘70s, Dr. Smith has
recorded for a slew of record labels, including Kudu, Groove Merchant, T.K., Scufflin’, Criss Cross, and Palmetto, ascending the charts many times. His unpredictable, insatiable musical taste
illustrates that no genre is safe, as Lonnie has recorded everything from covers of the Beatles, the Stylistics and the Eurythmics, to tribute albums of Jimi Hendrix, John Coltrane and
Beck–all by employing ensembles ranging from a trio to a fifteen-piece big band. Moreover, many of Doc’s recent compositions reflect dramatic ethereal qualities and orchestration that elicit
movie scores or soundtracks. Dr. Smith has been amused to find himself sampled in rap, dance and house grooves while being credited as a forefather of acid jazz. When questioned about
his consistent interest in music some consider outside the jazz “mainstream,” Lonnie shrugs. “Jazz is American Classical,” he proclaims. “And this music is a
reflection of what’s happening at the time… The organ is like the sunlight, rain and thunder…it’s all the worldly sounds to me!” Many awards have followed since 1969, when Downbeat
magazine named Dr. Lonnie Smith “Top Organist” of the year. from 2003-2014 he was awarded “Organist/Keyboardist of the Year” by the Jazz Journalist Association. In 2015 he received the
Village Music Legends Award. He is scheduled to receive the NEA Jazz Masters Award , the highest honor in jazz, on April 3, 2017.
Guitarist Jonathan Kreisburg & drummer Joe Dyson will accompany the good Doctor in this 8:30-10PM performance.
Having performed for audiences worldwide, Leon Foster Thomas is a unique force in modern jazz. The New York Amsterdam
News has described his playing as “riveting, his artistry is unrivaled," His virtuosic playing of the Steel Pan has enabled him to
connect emotionally with listeners on every level. This World Steelband Music Festival Soloist and Duet Champion has worked with
artists such as: Nathan Davis, James Moody, Hugh Masekela, Kevin Mahogany, Sammy Figueroa, Dolly Parton, Cyril Neville, 3 Canal,
Etienne Charles, and James Polk to name a few. A native of the island of Trinidad, Foster, as he is also called, was born on August 25th,
1981. He credits his parents, Hillouise Louise and Loderick Rollo Foster, for his musical voice and the pan yards of Trinidad & Tobago
for his initial musical training. After graduating from high school in Trinidad, Leon received a scholarship to attend Miami’s only
historically Black college, Florida Memorial University, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Music degree. Under the tutelage of Gary
Campbell, Leon earned his Master in Music degree from Florida International University. Leon released his first solo album titled What
You Don’t Know, which perfectly illustrates his versatility and prowess of the various music genres. His latest release Brand New
Mischief, which is inspired by the birth of his daughter, is receiving rave reviews from prominent publications All About Jazz & Jazz
Weekly. Leon will bring a great young ensemble featuring Tal Cohen (prize winning pianist from Australia), Kurt Hengstebeck
(prominent bassist from Miami), Michael Piolet (drummer from Chicago and member of the University off Miami’s Stamps Jazz Quintet),
and Jean Caze (winner of the 2006 International Trumpet Guild Jazz Competition) - all major young musicians who are just making
their name s in the international jazz world.

Our second Fall Concert at 3p.m. on October 9th features the critically
acclaimed tenor player from New York City - Harry Allen. He will be
bringing a quintet that features the wonderful rising star vocalist Hilary
Gardner. An authentic master of the jazz saxophone tradition, Harry is
right at home with the timeless music of George Gershwin, Cole Porter,
and Duke Ellington. His style of playing certainly recaptures the essence
of the ultra cool sound and the easy, lyrical phrasing of Stan, Al and Zoot.
This event will be hosted in a new venue for CPFJ - the Harrisburg Midtown
Arts Center. The Center was originally the Jewish Community Center of
Harrisburg and has a 2nd floor ballroom that will serve as a classic
backdrop for Harry’s traditional ensemble.
Gene Lees writes, "Stan Getz was once asked his idea of the perfect tenor saxophone soloist. His answer was, 'My technique, Al Cohn's ideas, and Zoot's time.' The fulfillment of that ideal may well be embodied in
Harry Allen." Swing Bros. recording artist Harry Allen has over thirty recordings to his name. Three of Harry's CDs have won Gold Disc Awards from Japan's Swing Journal Magazine, and his CD Tenors
Anyone? won both the Gold Disc Award and the New Star Award. His recordings have made the top ten list for favorite new releases in Swing Journal Magazine's reader's poll and Jazz Journal International's
critic's poll for 1997, and Eu Nao Quero Dancar (I Won't Dance), the third Gold Disc Award winner, was voted second for album of the year for 1998 by Swing Journal Magazine’s reader’s poll. The Harry Allen - Joe
Cohn Quartet won the New York Nightlife Award for Outstanding Jazz Combo Performance of 2006. Harry has performed at jazz festivals and clubs worldwide, frequently touring the United States, Europe and Asia.
He has performed with Rosemary Clooney, Ray Brown, Hank Jones, Frank Wess, Flip Phillips, Scott Hamilton, Harry 'Sweets' Edison, Kenny Burrell, Herb Ellis, John Pizzarelli, Bucky Pizzarelli, Jeff Hamilton, Terry
Gibbs, and has recorded with Tony Bennett, Johnny Mandel, Ray Brown, Tommy Flanagan, James Taylor, Sheryl Crow, Kenny Barron, Dave McKenna, Dori Caymmi, and Al Foster, among others. Harry is featured on
many of John Pizzarelli's recordings including the soundtrack and an on-screen cameo in the feature film The Out of Towners starring Steve Martin and Goldie Hawn. He has also done a series of commercials for
ESPN starring Robert Goulet. Harry was born in Washington D.C. in 1966, and was raised in Los Angeles, CA and Burrillville, RI. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree in music in 1988 from Rutgers University in
New Jersey, and currently resides in New York City.
Acclaimed singer Hilary Gardner grew up in Wasilla, Alaska infatuated with New York City. Her stunning Anzic Records debut, The Great City, is part love letter, part lament to New York and the big dreams it
represents. The Great City can be heard on radio stations across the country, and the album has garnered effusive praise from the jazz community, including DownBeat Magazine, which named Hilary "an artist to
watch in 2015" and a Rising Star Female Vocalist. The Frank Sinatra estate chose Hilary to appear as the live, onstage singer in Tony-award winner Twyla Tharp’s Come Fly Away. Backed by a 19-piece big band,
Hilary sang solos and duets with Frank Sinatra in a performance hailed by critics as “wonderful” (Huffington Post), “elegant” (USA Today), and “terrific” (New York Observer). Hilary performed with Jeff
Goldblum and his band at the Café Carlyle, prompting New York Magazine to call hers "a voice worth seeking out." In the wake of her appearance with Goldblum, Michael Feinstein personally invited Hilary to be
his featured guest on an episode of NPR's Song Travels with Michael Feinstein. Hilary was also a guest on Judy Carmichael’s SiriusXM program, Jazz Inspired. Hilary is a founding member of DUCHESS, a Boswell
Sisters-inspired vocal trio with Anzic Records label-mates Amy Cervini and Melissa Stylianou. The group has performed at the Ottawa Jazz Festival, Toronto Jazz Festival, Xerox Rochester International Jazz
Festival, Saratoga Jazz Festival, Monterey Jazz Festival, and the Jerusalem Jazz Festival. DUCHESS has also enjoyed sold-out appearances at Jazz at Lincoln Center and the Rubin Museum. Hilary performs as a
leader throughout New York City and is a frequent soloist with symphonies throughout the United States.
Performing with Harry & Hilary are a very gifted group of NYC musicians:
Rossano Sporteillo: an award-winning jazz pianist hailing from Vigevano, Italy. made his first trip to the United States in the 2003 and established his career in New York City.in 2007. Rossano has performed
with many of the world’s finest jazz luminaries, such as Slide Hampton, Clark Terry, Bob Wilber, Houston Person, Bill Charlap, and Dick Hyman. He has toured the world as a band leader and has several
successful solo piano recordings to his name.
Joel Forbes: an accomplished master of the acoustic bass was born in 1956. He has held a place on the NY jazz scene for 40 years. With tours throughout the US, Europe, Japan and Australia Joel has achieved
international recognition. Joel has played and/or recorded with... Buck Clayton, Jon Hendricks, Lou Donaldson, Scott Hamilton, Ken Peplowski, Junior Cook, Bill Hardman, Charles Macpherson, Doc Cheatham,
Dave Mckenna, Tommy Flannigan, Marion McPartland, Benny Golson, Bill Charlap, and many more.
Kevin Kanner: drums - a native of Southern California, has already amassed a large number of jazz credits including recordings with Paul Anka, Bill Holman, The Bud Shank Big Band, Josh Nelson and Michael
Buble. Kevin has also toured and performed with John Pizzarelli, Maureen McGovern, The Gerald Clayton Trio, The Clayton/Hamilton Jazz Orchestra, Lee Konitz, Bob Brookmeyer, Larry Goldings, Charles
McPhearson, Benny Green, Terell Stafford, Russell Malone, Stefon Harris, just to name a few.
We close our 36th Concert Season at 3p.m. on November 27th with a true jazz
legend - guitarist Pat Martino. Pat’s storied career has included recordings with
Chick Corea, Dave Holland, Eric Kloss, Groove Holmes & Jack MacDuff and he has
been at the forefront of the jazz guitar world since the mid-60’s. Since playing his
first notes while still in his pre-teenage years, Martino has been recognized as one
of the most exciting and virtuosic guitarists in jazz. With a distinctive, fat sound and
gut-wrenching performances, he represents the best not just in jazz, but in all
music. We return to the beautiful brewery and distillery, Wyndridge Farm, just
outside of York, PA, for this performance with Pat’s exciting Trio.
Pat began playing professionally in 1961. He has performed with a wide variety of artists including Sonny Stitt, Gene Ammons, Richard Groove Holmes, John Handy, Bobby Hutcherson, Chick Corea, Jack
McDuff, Don Patterson, Stanley Clark, Eric Kloss, Trudy Pitts, Willis Jackson, Lloyd Price, Woody Herman, Chuck Israels, Charles Earland, Barry Miles and Joe Pesci. Since 1967, Pat has been touring as a
leader. He has been a Recording Artist for Vanguard, Prestige, Warner Brothers, Muse, Columbia, King, Paddlewheel, Evidence, Sony, 32 Jazz, High Note, Milestone, Polydor, Concord, Fantasy, House of Blues,
Mythos, Mainstream, Cobblestone, Atlantic and, most currently, Blue Note Records. Pat has given Guitar and Music Therapy Seminars, Clinics and Master Classes throughout the world, at locations including
North Texas State University, G.I.T., Berklee College (Boston and Perugia, Italy), Duquesne University, and many others. Today, he lives in Philadelphia and is adjunct faculty at the University of the Arts.
Renowned organist Pat Bianchi and drummer Carmen Intorre will accompany Pat’s performance.

Third Stream and The Dave Stahl Big Band - TOGETHER AGAIN
Thursday evening December 29th
Lancaster saxophonist, band leader, and composer, Dave Wilson, released his
latest quartet CD "There Was Never" on the New York based ZOHO Music
Label in November of 2015. Recorded at world renowned Red Rock Studios,
Saylorsburg, Pa., it features an all-star lineup of Bobby Avey - piano, Tony
Marino - bass, Alex Ritz - drums (all members of the Dave Liebman Group), with
Dave Wilson on tenor and soprano saxophone . On the record there are six
original compositions plus unique and compelling interpretations of three wellknown tunes "God Only Knows" (Beach Boys), "Cassidy" (Grateful Dead), and
George Gershwin's "Summertime". Receiving extensive radio air play, the week
of Jan 14th it reached #18 in the nation-wide Jazz Weekly Jazz Radio
Countdown and stayed in the top 50 for 6 weeks! It was in the top 12 of
Philadelphia's WRTI Jazz Radio's New Releases for almost two months, reaching
a high of #5. It also had a great review in the February issue of Downbeat
Magazine, receiving three stars. This July "There Was Never" was placed by
ZOHO as an "Entry" for a Grammy Nomination in the category of "Best
Instrumental Jazz Album". You can check out what Dave is doing at
davewilsonmusic.org, where he also has an active business buying and selling

CENTR AL PA FRIENDS O F
JOIN THE CPFJ YOUTH BAND
Ron Waters is the Director for the CPFJ Youth Band.
There is no tuition fee and all applicants are accepted.
Please contact Mr. Waters at (717) 432-3109 or via email
[email protected] - all young musicians with an interest in
learning to improvise are welcome. Our continuing dedication
to jazz education led to the creation of the CPFJ Youth Band over
25 years ago. Mr. Waters is a professional arranger, composer
and trumpet player and the band is open to all school age
musicians - grade school through high school. Mr. Waters
prepares arrangements to suit the particular talents of the
participants each year. All applicants are accepted without
audition - Mr. Waters finds a niche for every instrumentalist and
vocalist. The band’s rehearsals and concerts are scheduled year
round including performances at the Central PA Jazz Festival,
Jazz Picnic, and many other events. Not only do the students get
wonderful experience playing in an improvising ensemble, but
they get to meet kids from other schools who have the same
interests. This ensemble offers a different experience than most
High School Jazz Ensembles - it is not a place where the
students simply read the notes on the page - all members learn
to improvise and get valuable experience playing jazz standards
and original music in a group setting. The Youth Band is also not
restricted to the traditional big band instrumentation (trumpets,
trombones, saxes & rhythm section) - all instruments are
welcome - we have had almost every imaginable
instrument….cello, accordion, oboe, flute, etc. in past bands.
The Youth Band plays all of our festivals and major events as
well as many civic functions, the JazzMobile, and concerts -
come join the fun!!
