Because of the large geographical area of our state of California, local groups called Units are established to help bring continuing education, networking and community event opportunities to the AMTA-CA members. Please connect with your local Unit Board members or Area Liaison, with the Northern and Southern representatives (who are the liaisons between the Chapter and Units) or with Sara-Becca at the Chapter Office for more information about participating and connecting with AMTA-CA members in your area. california currents - winter 2013 From Your President, Michael Roberson Welcome to the New Year! We often start the new year by looking back to the previous one to consider what was accomplished and what is still to be done. Then we make some brand new resolutions, or creatively rework those resolutions that were made last year. Your Chapter Board is doing well on those goals we established last March. And we want to see you succeed in your goals for 2013 that you have set for your practice, your career, and yourself. How can we help you? Your AMTA membership offers so many benefits that can help you accomplish your goals for the year. There are almost 50 different benefits in all, and many of them are free or offered at a discount. How will you make use of the benefits in these areas... Practice, Career, and Yourself Benefits for your practice: The Square for credit card processing, FREE consumer e-newsletters, bolstering your practice, on-line interactive courses, FindAMassageTherapist.org (a resource that can pay for your annual membership each year from the referrals), MTJ, our magazine that offers a wealth of information for you, a FREE website, discounts through VistaPrint and Massage Warehouse and AMTA Logo items. Benefits for your career: Mentoring! What a great way to make you fall in love with your career all over again. 2012 Massage Research Report, see the trends, who is making use of massage, where people are going for massages and more, all within one report that is updated each year. A must-have book: The Business of Massage, 2nd edition. Benefits for you: Through AGIA, The AMTA Optional Insurance program allows you to conveniently shop for a variety of insurance plans in one place. (For a full list of optional insurance programs, go to www.amtabenefits.com). Networking through our local Units meetings, workshops and events; at our Chapter Education Conference in March, as well as our Summer Education Conference; and during our National Convention (this year in Ft. Worth, TX, September 25-28). Some of your most useful benefits are near you. Check in with your massage school (or one nearby), fellow work california currents - winter 2013 colleagues, or in your Unit. We have this great technology of FaceBook that allows us to post questions and get answers from so many different people. Resources to help you succeed are all around you. Now one item people generally do not consider a resource is volunteering. What a better way to share what you have with others. In your goals for the new year, make sure you include some time to volunteer. This can be done as a onetime commitment, a longer term commitment to a position in your local unit, by volunteering to serve on the Chapter Board, or even serving at the National level. Your passion for your profession will grow from what you give. A few more tips about goals and resolutions: 1. Make sure your goals are something obtainable and within a time frame (it does not have to be within a year – it could be sooner, or projected later). Do something every day toward achieving your goals. 2. Surround yourself with like people who want to see you succeed and grow. Discouragement will come, so be ready for it by surrounding yourself with people who support you. 3. Make time in your life for something other than massage. Variety is the spice of life! 4. Take time for you! Get a massage at least every 3-4 weeks. Be the example to your clients I look forward to seeing you in Sacramento in March for our annual Education Conference. This year, we have great speakers in James Waslaski, Oleg Bouimer, Tim Harvey and Mark Kinney. (More details about the conference can be found inside.) Here’s to a great new year and the success that will come!
