NEWS
Robert Heinlein’s widow, Virginia Heinlein, has passed away.
After his death in 1988, she oversaw publication of several
posthumous works, including Grumbles from the Grave and
the uncut edition of Stranger in a Strange Land.
Virginia Kidd, agent, anthologist and writer, has died after a
long illness.
Ursula K Le Guin has been named Grand Master by the Science
Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America (SFWA).
J K Rowling’s long-awaited Harry Potter
and the Order of the Phoenix will be
published on 21 June simultaneously
in the US, UK, Australia and Canada. It
will be more than a third longer than the
previous book.
Bad news for fans looking forward to
seeing Neil Gaiman and Terry
Pratchett’s comedic novel Good Omens
on screen. According to Terry Gilliam,
the project has been indefinitey
postponed due to lack of finance. Also on indefinite hold (for
lack of a director) is the proposed big-screen adaptation of
Douglas Adams’ classic novel, The Hitch-Hikers Guide to the
Galaxy.
No news yet as to whether Buffy the
Vampire Slayer will be renewed for the
next season. Its future apparently rests
largely on whether Sara Michelle Gellar
decides to come back. There has been
talk of spin-offs. Also in the Buffy/Angel
camp, Alexis Denisof (Wesley) got
engaged to Alyson Hannigan (Willow)
over the Christmas break.
Christopher Reeve is set to guest-star
in the new season of Smallville and
apparently there is some possibility of
a recurring role.
Philip Reeves’ excellent young adult
novel, Mortal Engines, has won the prestigious Nestle Smarties
Gold Award in the 9-11 age group.

buddy Dujuv join the Royal Palace Guard
and race across the solar system to save her.
But upon arrival they quickly discover that

Vlad Taltos #9. On the run from House
Jhereg, which he double-crossed, Vlad Taltos
is found by, of all improbable people, Lady
Teldra, the courtly, preternaturally charming
servant of his old friend, the Dragonlord
Morrolan. Teldra has come to ask for Vlad’s
help, because Morrolan and Aliera have
disappeared and it looks as if they may be
literally gone from the world. Consulting the
ever-interesting and fabulously powerful
Sethra Lavode, Vlad and Teldra find that
Morrolan and Aliera are being held captive
by the Jenoine. Who have hitherto been a
mystery - perhaps not to a lord like Morrolan,
but certainly to Vlad. Indications are that the
Jenoine may have made Dragaera and may
have once been the masters of the gods
themselves. Not the kind of guys you want
to go up against. Cynical, Vlad may be. And
he certainly claims to be devoted to looking
out for Number One. But Morrolan and
Aliera are his friends, and he can’t bring
himself to abandon then - even if it means
doing battle at the Sea of Amorphia itself. Pb

A WINTER HAUNTING
TRANSFORMATION
D AN S IMMONS
P B 21.00 371 PP
Simmons is still linking characters between books. Forty-odd years
after the events of Summer of Night (Pb $22.95 - brilliant book),
Dale Stewart is heading back to Elm Haven, Illinois. Dale’s younger
brother Lawrence (Larry) has recently resurfaced in Darwin’s Blade
(Pb $21.95 – non-genre but unreal!). After the dark events of the
summer in 1960, Dale and his family moved away. True to the
promise to the memory of his murdered friend Duane, Dale became
a professor in literature and a writer (of a popular Western series).
Life hasn’t been a bed of roses of late though. Dale had an affair
with a brilliant grad student, Clare, who is about 25 years his junior.
It causes minor problems for him within the university he teaches
at, but the big cost is that his wife leaves him and his relationship
with his daughters is strained. Clare (a character you never really
warm to, but I don’t think you’re supposed to) then leaves him.
Dale falls apart and makes a failed attempt at suicide. He decides to
leave Montana for a year’s sabbatical writing and not only chooses
to return to Elm Haven to do this, but rents the farmhouse where
Duane grew up. One could argue that this is just asking for trouble,
and it doesn’t take long for it to start.
Elm Haven is run-down. It has gone from an idyllic small town to
disrepair and a number of his boyhood friends have died. When
unpacking, he finds the shotgun he tried to kill himself with, including
the shell that didn’t fire, which he knows he threw into a field in
Montana. Dale has a number of these memories/half memories
during the novel, some of which were a bit of a concern at the end.
Life here isn’t much smoother. The bully that gave Dale and his
friends so much grief as children is now the town Sheriff, he is hassled
by a group of redneck Neo Nazi’s, he keeps seeing lights in the
second story of the farmhouse - which has been sealed off for about
50 years - and there are black dogs roaming the property that noone seems to know anything about. Weird messages have been
appearing on his laptop, mostly in German and Old English, when
it’s been turned off and unplugged. He has one friend, Michelle,
with whom all the boys flirted when they were 12. She is renovating
her deceased parent’s home so she can sell it. One night as she is
leaving Dale’s place after dinner, she is attacked by the now HUGE
black dogs. When Dale gets the police involved, they not only can’t
find any trace of her body or dog prints in the snow, but they (as the
reader has been doing for some time) begin to question Dale’s
sanity.
I love the way Simmons juggles ‘real’ horror – phantom computer
messages, visitations from the dead, gods from mythology and the
real horror of losing your mind. Dale has a history of blocking
memories – from the events of the summer of 1960 to what happened
after he and Clare broke up. It’s not until the very end that the
reader gets some answers as to what did and didn’t happen, and
until that point, I had a growing sense of dread for him. Living
through the supernatural factors of the story would be bad enough,
but how much of the possible psychosis he was living with seemed
much worse. Some of the story is narrated by Duane, whose only
experiences, after dying aged 12, have been lived through Dale.
This just adds to the question of what is supernatural and what is
Dale’s psychosis.
It’s not essential to have read Summer of Night to read this, but it
might be nice background. I love it when I find a book that supercedes
all desire to clean, shop, cook, etc and results in an indulgent two
days lounging around reading at home. - Steph. 8/10

Ignoring the first few paragraphs,
Transformation is one of those ‘wow’ books
that you can’t put down once you’ve started.
Narrated in first-person from the point-ofview of Seyonne, the primary character, this
is an intelligent, powerful, poignant, comingof-age tale which, while set against an
interesting enough background, is completely
dominated by the character development of
the two main characters.
Seyonne was once a Warden, a sorcerer of a
race of people who used their power to defeat
demons. Now enslaved by the Derzhi and
robbed of his powers, he is dead to his people,
unclean by their standards, but still bound by the oaths he swore in
his past life.
The novel begins with Seyonne’s purchase by none other than the
heir to the Derzhi Empire, Prince Aleksander - arrogant, clever, selfcentred, spoilt and heedlessly cruel.
Seyonne does his best to keep his head down and stay out of trouble,
but fate conspires against him. Through the vengeful plans of a
young noble, he is branded on the face immediately upon his arrival
at the Prince’s residence. The Prince’s response to this damage of his
‘property’ is immediate and violent, and threatens the stability of
the realm. Through no real fault of his own, Seyonne is abruptly the
centre of too much attention.
Seyonne is first called on to read and write for the Prince and then
serve at his tables, (a privilege he’d be happy to live without), where
he discovers first that one of the Prince’s companions is possessed by
a demon, then that the Prince himself is being ‘prepared’ for such a
possession. And if that’s not bad enough, it gets worse – for when
deciding to ‘take the prince’s measure’, meeting his eyes, Seyonne
sees within Aleksander something that only one such as himself
could recognise – feadnach - the mark that reveals a soul of destiny,
of greatness, the type of soul that Seyonne has sworn an oath to
protect at the cost of his own life. Suddenly, Seyonne is irrevocably
bound to the man who represents all that he detests about the world.
From here on in, Seyonne has to walk the fine line between slave
and mentor, somehow finding a way to guide the prince without
goading the man into killing him for his insolence.
The use of first person engages the reader in an intensely personal
way. Seyonne’s bitterness, his fear, his despair and ultimately the
good stuff that comes as the narrative unfolds, is all-too vivid.
Through Seyonne’s eyes, we see both the Prince and Seyonne mature
and change, a friendship ultimately burgeoning under the most
unlikeliest of circumstances. And it is these transformations of soul
and beautifully constructed character development that make this
novel so memorable. The author’s skill is undeniable, the flaws are
few (considering this was her debut novel) and the world she has
constructed, with its race of demon-fighters and subtle dangerous
magics, is both believable and fantastic.
While this novel is actually followed by two more novels, Restoration
($18.95) and Revelation ($19.95), it can be read as a single novel, and
is worthy of a place on any fantasy reader’s shelf. - Jo

GIVE ME LIBERTY
Liberty is a recurring theme in science
fiction. Here’s a volume of explorations of
this theme, some even arguing that freedom
can be best served by doing away with
government entirely. A variety of science
fiction writers consider how a governmentfree society could operate, how the Soviet
Union might have fallen apart even earlier
because of an apparently harmless device,
how a low-tech society might throw off the
influence of more advanced intruders and
more. Contributors include Lloyd Biggle,

MASTER OF MIDDLE-EARTH: THE
ACHIEVEMENT OF J R R TOLKIEN
In its blend of epic and fairy-tale, uncanny
atmosphere and moral force, The Lord of the
Rings trilogy is unique in modern English
literature. In this reference, the author
focuses on the series, but also considers
Tolkien’s fiction as a whole, showing the
relationship of the short prose and verse
narratives to the major work. In chapters
such as Sauron and the Nature of Evil, The
Free Peoples and Aragorn, he traces Tolkien’s
principal themes and preoccupations and
casts a brilliant light on the geography and
inhabitants of Middle-Earth. Tp $28.00 247pp
CHRISTOPHER TOLKIEN
J R R Tolkien produced a vast amount of
material that expanded upon the mythology
and stories of Middle-Earth and which
gives added life to the 1,000-year war

to this task of literary construction that
Tolkien’s youngest son Christopher
applied himself to produce the series of 12

TOLKIEN: A BIOGRAPHY
This biography recounts Tolkien’s early
childhood in South Africa, followed by his
family’s return to England after his banker
father’s death. The Tolkiens settled in the
highly industrialised city of Birmingham in
the 1890s, which was still surrounded by
breathtaking countryside. Thus the
industrialised heart of the Empire and the
sylvan idyll of the woods and hills became
important extremes for much of Tolkien’s
thinking and writing, leading up to that most
inspired moment when, as an Oxford don,
Tolkien was marking exam papers and
noticed his student had left a blank page in
the answer book. Suddenly he wrote: “In a
hole in the ground there lived a Hobbit”. In
typical Tolkien fashion, he was intrigued by
this and decided to find out more about
hobbits. The rest is history. Pb $22.95 292pp

GREGORY MAGUIRE
LOST
Winifred Rudge, a bemused writer struggling
to get beyond the runaway success of her
mass-market astrology book, travels to
London to jump-start her new novel about a
woman who is being haunted by the ghost
of Jack the Ripper. Upon her arrival, she finds
that her step-cousin and old friend John
Comestor has disappeared and a ghostly
presence seems to have taken over his
apartment in the 19th-century row house
once owned by Winnie’s great-greatgrandfather. Is it the spirit of this ancestor,
who, family legend claims, was Charles
Dickens’ childhood inspiration for Ebenezer
Scrooge? Could it be the ghostly remains of
Jack the Ripper? Or a phantasm derived from
a more arcane and insidious origin? Tp

DUEL: TERROR STORIES
Remember that murderous semi chasing
Dennis Weaver down a lonely stretch of
desert highway? Duel, Steven Spielberg’s
acclaimed first film, was adapted by Richard
Matheson from his unforgettable story of
the same name. But Duel is only one of the
classic suspense tales in this outstanding
collection of stories by the Grand Master of
Horror, which also contains Matheson’s
legendary first story, Born of Man and Woman,
as well as several stunning shockers that
inspired memorable episodes of The Twilight
Zone, including Little Girl Lost, Steel, and Third
from the Sun. Tp $45.00 394pp
SUSIE MOLONEY
362 BELISLE STREET
At first glance, it looks like a nice house at a
knockdown price, but for Glenn Darnley of
Shelter Realty, selling 362 Belisle Street
proves almost impossible. First a young
couple move in - but the house won’t let them
stay long. A divorcee with an unhappy young
son has it for a while. Then a drunken writer.
But not one of them are welcome. Dreadful
things happen at 362 Belisle Street. It’ll take a
very special owner to turn this house into a
home. Tp $29.95 421pp
DMITRY RADYSHEVSKY
THE MANTRA
His music is intoxicating. An incantation
pumping every drumbeat into the blood.
Every rhythm, every word, enslaving listeners
into a blissful paralysis of the will. No wonder
TuneRa has become the most popular
performer in the world. Lane Patton, a
student of religion, is familiar with the
seductive message. He’s heard it on the lips of
strangers - before they die. He knows what it
is - a mantra implanted into the minds of
America’s young. But what does it really mean
and where is it leading them? To discover the
answer he must follow the voices himself- into
a nightmare over which there is no control
and no reason. No aversion to pain, to violence
or to death and where there is no will to escape
the divinely terrifying powers of... the Mantra.

tormented figures. He has dared sit in it only

important to Joey’s father, who flies into a

THE IRRESISTABLE RISE OF HARRY POTTER
Harry Potter is English, a suburban child and an orphan, who retreats into a fantasy
world where the author rescues him through the reinvention of that apex of class
privilege - the English public school. This is a literary conceit that questions Harry
Potter’s status as a role model and raises important social questions about the state of
education in Blair’s Britain. The author’s examination of the Harry Potter phenomenon
also raises questions about the condition of the publishing industry, the state of
bookselling and filmmaking and the ways in which the Potter consumer campaign
has changed our ideas about literature and reading. The author reflects on the ways
in which these connections, while drawn up in Britain, act as a template for Harry
Potter’s international success. Hb $39.95 118pp

LIFE EVERYWHERE: THE MAVERICK SCIENCE OF ASTROBIOLOGY
This book explains the science of astrobiology. It asks the questions that researchers
in astrobiology are asking themselves: what is life? How does it originate? How often
does life survive once it arises? How does evolution work? And what determines
whether complex or intelligent life will emerge from more primitive forms? Informed
by interviews with most of the top people in this nascent field, this book introduces
readers to one of the most important scientific developments of the next century. Tp

of visual and lyrical splendour. Millions of years before the emergence of humankind,
the great dragon civilisation dominated this world. It left few traces behind save

who, through candid and revealing interviews, provide a fascinating insight into
their creative processes and working methods. The variety of styles featured within
this collection is far greater than that of the first book and the range of work is
testimony to the skill, imagination and individuality to be found in this thriving genre

THE SCIENCE OF VAMPIRES
The concept of the vampire has evolved from Bram Stoker’s supernatural creature of
the night to the pop culture anti-hero of today’s TV shows, hit movies and bestselling
novels. Where were these legends born? In what ways have they evolved? How
much is actually true? This book answers these questions and more: Are any vampire
myths based on fact? What is Vampire Personality Disorder? What is the polysexual
world of the vampire? Could a vampire hide in today’s advanced world of forensic
science? Based on fascinating interviews with forensic experts, creative artists and
real-life bloodsuckers, this is a vampire book like no other. Tp $36.00 276pp
