Arts and Crafts
Crafts and Special Projects
The craft group meets on the first and third Tuesdays
of the month at 2 pm in the West Anaheim Community
Room. They prepare wonderful tray favors for
patients, table decorations, and special projects. Bring
scissors with you. Ideas and samples are always
welcome.
“Crafts” meet weekly on Tuesday morning at 9 am
to learn and create various craft projects. “Special
Projects” meet the second Wednesday of the month
at 9 am to make tray favors for hospital patients. Both
classes meet at Huntington Beach Hospital in the
lower level classrooms. Everyone is welcome.

can contact you and arrange a partner for you. If you
have a partner, fine, but she still needs to schedule you
into a table. Please RSVP to the office by Wednesday

If you are interested in knitting or crocheting projects
such as lap robes for patients, baby caps, or helmet
liner beanies for the troops then this is your group.
No meetings but instructions and yarn are available.

Everybody's Irish on March 17, the Irish and the Irish-at-heart across the globe observe St. Patrick’s Day. What began as a
religious feast day for the patron Saint of Ireland has become an international festival celebrating Irish culture with parades,
dancing, special foods and a whole lot of green. Saint Patrick's Day, while not a legal holiday in the United States, is
nonetheless widely recognized and observed throughout the country as a celebration of Irish and Irish American culture.
Celebrations include prominent displays of the color green, eating and drinking, religious observances, and numerous parades.
The holiday has been celebrated on the North American continent since the late eighteenth century. So let’s get together…

Volunteer Happenings…Gloria F. recently tendered her resignation as Chairperson of Entertainment for the Union Hall
General Meetings. She has coordinated their entertainment for several years with great success and the Board thanks her
for the great job she did. Barbara B. will now handle entertainment for both locations. If you hear someone great, please
let her know by just calling the office and leaving a message. Vicki F. has stepped down as Chairperson of HB Crafts
after filling in the last year when we lost our dear Joan Ann Williams. Thank you Vickie! We welcome Donna R. who
will take over the duties of this fun group. Gloria and Vicki will continue as Office Staff Volunteers working in the
Administrative Office. Additionally, the Travel Team is losing not only an office staff member but a wonderful Hostess.
After 8 years in Travel, Karen H. has resigned in order to pursue other volunteer and personal endeavors. Thank you
Karen, you will be missed in the office and hosting trips. On Wednesday, April 15th Prime Healthcare Services will be
recognizing our wonderful OC Circle of Friends volunteers. This invitation only event held during National Volunteer
Week is one small way to thank the volunteers for giving so much of themselves in service to our club. Please take time to
thank our Board Members, our many Chairpersons, Office & Travel Staff, Decoration crews and so many more who help
to make OC Circle of Friends such a great organization. Happy National Volunteer Week!!!
What The Members Are Doing…Our Happy Hookers & Knotty Crafters have donated: 76 lap robes to our members,
116 lap robes to patients, 22 to our Vets, 504 troop caps, 365 baby caps and 154 baby blankets. Congratulations!
As productive as our Happy Hookers / Knotty Crafters are, these two groups are always in need of talented knitters
and crocheters; their lap robes are given to our members should they be hospitalized, or are donated to the VA for our
Vets to use. These very talented members also make helmet liners for our troops to wear under their helmets, as well as
baby blankets and caps for newborns at Garden Grove Hospital. There is always a need for more! Most of the work is done
at home at your own pace. If you are interested in joining these members but need instruction please give us a call and
either Margaret or Anna will get in touch with you. Remember donations of yarn are greatly appreciated!
See’s Candy Fundraiser… Candy is sold at the General Meetings or in our Administrative Office.
As costs have gone up everywhere so has the price of our lollypops and candy bars. Our current selling prices are $1.00
for lollypops, $1.50 for chocolate candy bars and we will no longer be selling one pound gift certificates. We are sorry for
any inconvenience that this causes our members, but it is a sign of the times….
A special THANK YOU to our VP Dottie Dupont for sponsoring the delicious Pizza
at our Travel Meeting held at Old World. It was enjoyed by all!

To watch Johnny Ace Palmer in action is to see a magician’s art at its highest form. Johnny’s closeup performances are technically, perfectly polished and immensely entertaining. Johnny earned the
title of World Champion Magician in 1988; he was the first close-up magician in history to receive
the Grand Prix award, awarded once every three years where competing magicians from 47 countries
witnessed his award winning act. In addition, Johnny was voted Best Close-Up Magician at the
Magic Castle in Hollywood two years in a row (1987, 1988) and Lecturer of the Year (1996, 1999).
He is also the only magician to receive both the International Brotherhood of Magicians' Gold Cups

2 Tbls All-purpose flour
Place flour in plastic bag. Add meat cubes, a few at a time, shaking to coat evenly. In
1 Lb Beef stew meat, cubed a large saucepan, brown the meat, half at a time, in hot oil. Add juice cocktail, onion,

bouillon cubes, garlic, basil, and thyme. Bring to boiling then reduce heat. Cover and

A Memorable Lesson on Life ! During my second month of college, our professor gave us a pop quiz. I finished all
the questions easily until I read that last one, “What is the name of the woman who cleans the school?” I figured this was
some kind of a joke. I’ve seen the woman many times; tall, dark-haired, maybe in her 50’s, but how and why should I
know her name? I handed in my paper, leaving the last question blank. Just before class ended, one student asked if the
last question would count toward the quiz grade. “Absolutely,” said the professor. “In your careers you will meet many
people. All are significant. They deserve your attention and care, even if all you do is smile and say ‘Hello.’” I never
forgot that lesson and I soon learned that her name was Dorothy. Since college, my life’s theme has been ‘Work like you
really need the money’, because “the harder you work, the luckier you are; Love like you’ve never been hurt; and
dance like you would if nobody were watching!”

Huell Howser’s Road Trip to Bakersfield ~ Tuesday, March 10, 2015
On this day trip, you’ll travel over the Grapevine and spend the day following in Huell’s footsteps. His
enthusiasm for California inspired the idea for the television series that started it all, California’s Gold and then
Road Trip. Huell had a basic idea: if he traveled the state with an open heart and an open mind, a
microphone and a camera, he would uncover a treasure of California stories…One of the most popular
episodes is the one that took him on the road to Bakersfield. You’ll be taken on a guided tour of Dewar’s
Candy Production Center to see their world famous taffy being made. You will have an opportunity to sample the
taffy chews right off the line and enjoy a scoop of Dewar’s delicious homemade ice cream. A day trip to
Bakersfield is undeniably nostalgia-laden, even for those unfamiliar with the history of the area – namely the
story of the Spanish shepherd community from the late 1800”s. Traditional Basque family-style dining is a
way of life here and you’ll have a chance to experience just that when you dine at Woolgrower’s Basque
Restaurant – lunch includes Tri-Tip, Fried Chicken, green salad, Pyrenees French bread & butter, beans,
French fries, dessert and wine or tea. The final stop on your road trip is to the Kern County Museum. Its main
focus is the history of Kern County (including Bakersfield). One of the prominent features is Pioneer Village. Located
on 16 acres it contains over 50 original buildings from around the county, related to life in the late 19th century.
There is almost one of every type of building from the time period, including: one room schoolhouse, church,
photography studio, train station, hotel, courthouse, and assay office, oil equipment, including a wooden oil derrick, as
well as a pumping unit (with 6 wooden pumps) are located in the village. The buildings are arranged to simulate an
actual town. Other features include: Lori Brock Children’s Discovery Center, Black Gold exhibit, and main building.
The museum is accredited by the American Alliance of Museums. Please wear comfortable walking shoes!

Second That Emotion.” and “My Girl,” In the early 70’s Robinson became Vice President of Motown Records serving as
in-house producer, talent scout and songwriter. John Lennon of The Beatles made countless remarks regarding
Robinson’s influence on his music. The Beatles had recorded Robinson and The Miracles’ “You’ve Really Got a Hold

choose from a select menu when you arrive after noon. Later you check into the Silver Legacy Resort, Reno, NV, for a 4
day, 3 night stay. The evening is on your own free to explore this full service resort. We will request ALL non-smoking
rooms (unless noted by you), which include a 32-inch LCD television, pay movies and complimentary wireless (highspeed) Internet access plus 24-hour room service is available. A skywalk connects to the Circus - Circus and Eldorado
