Second Balkan Symposium
on Fruit Growing September 5-7, 2011
INVITATION
The International Society for Horticultural Science and the Organizing Committee for the Second Balkan
Symposium on Fruit Growing (II BSFG) are pleased to invite you at the Research Institute for Fruit Growing Pitesti,
Romania (RIFG), to attend one of the most significant events for the fruit growing sector in Balkan area, from 5th to
7th September, 2011.
The Symposium's motto "Fruit quality, health and environment" wants to renew the opportunity to achieve high
quality horticultural crops, with more influence in the human health and well-being.
The II BSFG aims to be an international meeting which allows the exchange of research results from scientists to
sales representatives, and a debate on the latest advances.
I would like to invite you to join this event. We hope to see you, here, in Pitesti, Romania in September, 2011.
Mihail COMAN, Convener, on behalf of the Organizing Committee
SYMPOSIUM LOCATION
The Symposium will be held in Pitesti,
ROMANIA, at the Research Institute for Fruit Growing.
Pitesti, residence of Arges district, is situated in the Southcentral part of Romania, between Meridional Carpathians
Mountains and Danube. The distance from Bucharest (the
capital of the country) to Pitesti, is about 120 km. Pitesti is
situated at the confluence of Arges river with Doamnei river,
in the cross point of 44°51'30" North latitude parallel to
24°52' East longitude meridian. Altitude is: 250 – 350 m.
The city, located between high hills, on the Arges river
terraces, has a temperate climate, calm and moderate.
Annual average temperature varies between 8.6° and
11.5°C, the average for January is -1.4°C, for July 20.2°C
and for September is 15.0°C.
There is a chain of hotels down town (40 - 80
euro/night).
Research Institute for Fruit Growing is located 5 km
far from Pitesti centre. Predominant soil types in the area are
heavy-clay soils on the hills (luvisols, eroded brown soils,
etc.) and colluvial and alluvial soils in the rivers flood plains,
all with a medium and low humus content. The climate is
favorable to deciduous fruit tree growing, first fall frosts
may occur in late October and the latest ones in the 2nd 10-day
period of April.
The Institute coordinates the research activities of 5
Experimental R&D stations, located in the most important
fruit growing zones: Baneasa (apricot, peach), Bistrita
(apple, sweet cherry), Constanta (peach, apricot and
nectarines), Falticeni (apple) and Iasi (sweet cherry, apple).
The scientific staff includes 68 researchers, of which 24
carry on their work at the Institute. More information about
RIFG please can be found on:
