But at KGS charity begins on the tee boxes, on the greens and on the 19 th hole! No doubt readers may wish to know how that could possibly come to pass. Well, club record shows ample evidence to prove this point. No less than ten charity golf tournaments have been held here over the years since the club’s inception. The primary objective of such a noble club event is to raise funds in support of the local community, particularly the charitable welfare organisations, towards its effort to help the needy, the underprivileged and the physically and mentally disabled in our society. It is indeed heartening to note that the game of golf, generally associated with elitism and exclusiveness, hitherto the pastime of the upper crust of society, has made a substantial contribution to charity and for a good cause. One reason for that has to do with the game’s ever increasing popularity. Golf has permeated through all strata and demographics of every country around the globe. Club members and the golfing fraternity are looking for every opportunity to be out there in the open having fun, enjoying fresh air on the fairways and greens. They are more than willing and quite prepared to make some sacrifices by contributing in cash and kind to raise funds using golf tournaments as fund raising platforms. There is no doubt that the harder those organisers work the more money they could raise. It is important, however, to bear in mind that working towards raising funds is, most of the time, arduous and frustratingly unrewarding especially in a small community such as ours. Unlike in super-rich cities such as Singapore, Hong Kong or Los Angeles with their surplus funds, our city is almost devoid of multinational corporations to readily lend a helping hand in that regard. The enjoyment of playing golf aside, those who get themselves involved in this sort of voluntary effort of raising funds for charity must be prepared for the downside of charity work, given the scarcity of big donors to back them up. Nevertheless, organisers and participants should not lose sight of the principal objective of a fundraising drive for charity, whether its vehicle is a golf tournament, a marathon race, a sale-of-work, a concert or a fundraising gala dinner. Not so long ago, a golf club, which shall be nameless to protect the innocent, raised a very substantial sum of money, all in the name of charity. By all accounts the fundraising event was deemed a great success by everyone involved. On the day of reckoning organisers and participants were ready to celebrate their resounding success. As the organisers were busy working out the operational cost of the tournament against the amount they had raised at the end of the day, they were shocked to have discovered that they had incurred an operational expenditure of 65% of the total proceeds. The irony of it all was that the focus was on entertaining and satisfying the needs of the golfing participants. At their prize-giving reception were displayed attractive souvenirs, grand prizes (Rolex watches), large plasma TVs, branded laptops, etc. To top it up there was a lavish prize-giving dinner, attended by specially invited VVIP guests. The organisers were smugly satisfied knowing that they had given their best in organising a successful charity golf event that offered lucrative prizes for the winners to take home. But they were missing the point. Their priority was topsy-turvy and the real objective of the tournament was not achieved. Donors and contributors may in the future think twice before they willingly respond to appeals for donations because their contributions do not reach the intended beneficiaries. The hallmark of a charity golf tournament worthy of its name is this: its objective is clearly stated and is fully realised. Every participant donates in cash or in kind. The money raised is distributed justifiably to the target groups – the needy, the mentally and physically disabled and such other charitable organisations that deserve to receive the benefit from our valiant and generous fundraising efforts. First and foremost, organisers must impose stringent terms and conditions in future charity golf tournaments such that only those whose sole purpose is to give to charity, without any false pretence, or ulterior motives would come forward to volunteer and participate in the tournament. For instance, major prizes such as 1st, 2nd and 3rd prizes, etc., will be donated to the organising committee for a fair auction on the spot or at a later stage. The proceeds of such an auction will go to charity. In other words, whatever is accrued as a prize is to be given back to the organisers as donation. In this way, fundraising through a golf tournament will really be meaningful. One enters into the fray purely for charity and for altruistic reasons. This idea may not sit well with local organisers and participants alike because they have been accustomed to the conventional practice of “winner-take-home” everything that has legitimately been won at the tournament. But the principle by which a charity golf tournament operates is in the giving, not the taking away, of every single sen that has been raised. In the forthcoming KGS-SMTA Charity Golf, due to take place on July 6 2008, it may be worthwhile to try this method as an experiment. We are given to understand that fourteen cars will be offered as “hole-in-one” prizes. Ideally, winners of the “hole-in-one” cars should be made to accept terms and conditions of the charity golf tournament: the car is to be sold at 5% of market price (or whichever price is judged fair) to the rightful winner. The income derived from the sale will be donated to charity. Should he decline to purchase the vehicle, it will be treated as his donation to charity, to be put up for auction, commencing at 5% of the market price. The money raised is the winner’s donation. Whatever happens, operational cost should be limited to 9% of the sum collected. To spend more than that on operational and administrative cost will be spendthrift and extravagant, defeating the purpose for which the tournament is held in the first place. The general idea of a charity golf tournament is that everybody taking part must be interested in giving, in cash or in kind, whatever much one can afford, to support the community in its endeavour to help the underprivileged, the marginalised and the less fortunate. To move forward for the better requires a drastic change. That’s the only way. I leave it to you, members and those responsible to ponder over my opinion. I hope that, guided by wisdom and counsel, you will find the right answers soon. Pause ..... think ...... think .....think. I am sure I would be driven to insanity to keep repeating this same message over and over again. So this will by my last advice, at least through the medium of the Vice-President’s message. I can see the insanity in this definition for I have repeatedly said or stated the same old things to the same people, through the same media and I have expected very optimistically that things will change for the better. But as we all know, nothing much has changed, is being changed or is changing. For example, members and workers still smoke carelessly away and throw rubbish indiscriminately, (as evidence, just look around the buggy shed). Of course the majority of members and staff are not guilty. It is the few, but unfortunately enough to create havoc and chaos in the system. Many repair works are still mostly left undone, the landscape has little sign of TLC from those responsible: dead trees are aplenty. Instead of getting better, deterioration seems to be setting in. I do not want to distract members with other issues this time around because I wish to draw your attention solely on the subject of change. In conjunction with the Gawai celebration, I wish my Dayak friends and colleagues Selamat Hari Gawai. Gayu Guru, Gerai Nyamai, Lantang Senang. Tan Sri Datuk Amar (Dr) Hamid Bugo Vice President 6 Captain’s Message Captain’s “Selamat Hari Gawai” to all Dayak members; Gayu Guru, Gerai Nyamai (Long Life, Good Health and Prosperity!). To share the joy of this special Festival, the Dayak members of our Club will be sponsoring a Gawai Dayak Open House Golf on 29.6.2008 ala the Chap Goh Mei Special Golf sponsored by the Chinese members on 23.2.2008. I am sure it will be a wonderful day of golfing and celebration for golfers and non-golfers alike. Our Club Golf Pro. Mr. David Jest left us in April, 2008 for Kuala Lumpur to embark on a different business venture; we wish him all-the-best in his new endeavour. During his time with us at KGS, David has done a lot to build up our Junior Golf programme, and the result speaks for itself. We have produced a number of high potential junior golfers who are making a mark for themselves at the national level. Message golf course at Kota Samarahan is nearing completion and will be opened for play from 1/8/2008. This is good news indeed! Kuching badly needs additional golfing facilities, both for local golfers and visiting golfers/tourists. This will reduce the pressure on bookings for available slots at KGS, especially during weekends. We wish Sarawak Club well in their preparation to get ready the new golf course. There is a growing trend of our members travelling outside of Kuching and Sarawak to test their golfing skills at other courses, more often than not (and whenever the opportunities arise), at clubs with whom we have “reciprocal arrangements”. For a club of our size and standing, KGS can boast of having a large number of “reciprocal clubs’ throughout the world (ref. back inside page of this magazine). We welcome Abdul Samat bin Abu, our new Pro, who joined us in April 2008 and look forward to his contribution in helping to lift the overall standard of golf, including the juniors, at KGS. Be that as it may, we are constantly on the lookout for opportunities to establish “reciprocal” relationship with clubs of equal standing and status both in Malaysia and overseas. On that score, I am pleased to inform that we have recently signed-up “Reciprocal Agreement” with two overseas clubs i.e. The Grange Golf Club in Adelaide, Australia (a 36-hole premier club) and The Raffles Golf Club, Singapore, (another 36-hole Premier Club in Singapore). And we will continue to explore opportunities for such affiliation with other leading golf clubs in Peninsula Malaysia and overseas. Four juniors from KGS have been selected to represent Sarawak at the XII Sukma games at Kuala Terengganu; they are Amanda Chin, Gertrude Lee, Abg. Abd. Rahim and Leonard Chin. Congratulations to all of them. The girls’ team won the bronze medal for Sarawak. Well done! But remember that when you play at our Reciprocal Clubs, you are also the Ambassador of Kelab Golf Sarawak and we look to you to keep our KGS flag flying through your demeanour, your on course behaviour and the way you interact with their club members. Amanda Chin, Leonard Chin, Abg. Abd. Rahim and Oh Sea Joon recently participated in the True Visions International Golf Championship 2008 in Thailand. They all played well and were placed 3rd in the Team Event, behind Thailand and Philipines, ahead of the other Malaysian teams from Peninsula Malaysia. Many of our top juniors have made tremendous progress in their game and I am sure they will bring more honours to our Club in the coming years. Wishing all our members....... Team Erakristal had to face off against team KKB to fight for the grand champion which was scheduled on Sunday, 27th April 2008 at 1.00 p.m. A fierce golf battle ensued between both teams and after hours of exercise in gamesmanship, both teams were still tied at 2-2. The final and deciding match reached the final hole where both team members and spectators waited nervously at Santubong Hole 18. The match was still a tie and when all players put 3 on to the last green; it all came down to putting. Ambrose Wong of KKB had a remarkable putt of about 20 ft from the pin, missed the cup by the mere edge and had to settle for a bogey. All eyes were on Abang Abdul Rahman who had an uphill 12 footer putt. After exploring all the possible breaks, he stroked the putter with confidence and the ball rolled straight into the centre of the cup. There was a loud roar and Team Erakristal began to celebrate. Well done Erakristal!! FROM BRUNEI, SABAH, W.P. LABUAN & SARAWAK Seventeen golf clubs throughout the Island of Borneo took part in the 10th Borneo Ladies Golf Challenge Trophy (10th BLGCT 2008) that was held at KGS on the 10th, 11th and 12th of March 2008, the highest number of participants in the history of the Borneo Challenge Trophy. With the Sarawak Golf Association sanctioning the tournament the KGS ladies’ Golf Committee were lucky to get all the support from SGA, Committee members and the management of KGS. YB Dato’ Seri William Mawan, the Minister of Social Development and Urbanisation was the Patron who hosted the welcoming dinner at the Holiday Inn Poolside on the 10th of March. This year, the response from the ladies from Sabah, Brunei, Labuan, Miri and Bintulu were overwhelming and with a heavy heart we had to drop 10 of our ladies in order to accommodate the guests. It was a difficult decision and the Organising Committee wishes to say thank you to the Kuching girls who made the sacrifice. The largest contingent was from Sabah with 63 participants, Sarawak 47 participants, Brunei 21 participants and Labuan sent 6 participants. Registration of participants on the 9th of March was done at Holiday Inn Lobby and for the Sarawak Team it was done at Jambu Restaurant. Celine Foo invited all the Sarawak Team for a “get together pep talk” dinner. It was a short but fun night. TEAM EVENT ON A PRACTICE ROUND The Organising Committee decided to change the practice round from the usual ‘Mixed Greensome’ to a Team Event whereby a team was formed at random and the winners would be based on 3 best scores from a 4 member team. WELCOMING DINNER BORNEO LADIES GOLF CHALLENGE TROPHY 2008 taken back by Sarawak Team since 1993 in KGS. The proud 4 ladies BRAVO! Organising Chairlady... “Kain Pelikat La La La La” The theme for the welcoming dinner was “Kampung Nite” and all the ladies attending the dinner must wear batik. The organising committee was so impressed with the ladies that came in that night wearing a variety of batik dresses. It was a beautiful ... and spectacular sight... The highlight of the dress code was the MC John Sammy and the Lady Captain came in wearing ‘Kain Pelikat’... It was very sporting of them... The night was filled with hot music performed by Daniel Shukri and the Lady Golf 23 guests were entertained by the ladies themselves. It was made compulsory that each region must give at least one performance. Brunei however stole the show and was declared the best performer. 1 2 3 4 6 1st DAY TOURNAMENT (11TH OF MARCH) With the rain pouring over the weeks, it had left the fairway wet and soggy. Due to the wet condition, Mr. Ting Bang Kong in his capacity as the Chairman of the tournament’s Rules and Regulation Committee, declared that the game should be played as “Preferred Lie” KGS Local Rule, whereby a golfer is allowed to mark the ball, clean it and place the ball within a club length. The tournament was conducted as scheduled with a few hiccups as there were continous onset of showers and all the ladies had to stop and wait for the ‘start again’ siren signalled by the club. 2ND DAY TOURNAMENT (12TH OF MARCH) 5 7 5 8 9 1. After careful thought and discussion between all the Lady Captains and the Organising Committee, it was decided that it was not possible to continue with the second day game and that the result of the tournament would be based on 18 holes instead of 36 holes. While waiting for the prize giving lunch, all Regions were asked to come up with entertainment programme. The ladies really know how to have fun time. They came up with ideas like playing indoor games, singing and dancing. While having fun they did not forget the less fortunate ladies that were suffering from breast cancer, so Jeanette Tambakau took the initiative to pass the hat around to collect money to be donated to The Sarawak Breast Cancer Support Group. The ladies generously gave away a sum of RM2,780 to Jeanette and the money was presented to the Sarawak Breast Cancer Support Group President Suriani Ritom during the prize giving lunch. Bravo Jeanette and all the ladies who did not flinch for a second when the hat was passed around. That made the total amount given to the Sarawak Breast Cancer Support Group for this tournament to RM4,780.00 The prize giving lunch was sponsored by YB Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri George Chan. On behalf of the ladies and the Organising Committee, please accept our heartfelt thank you to you YB Datuk Patinggi. 24 Lady Golf ○ RESULTS OF THE 10TH BORNEO LADIES GOLF CHALLENGE TROPHY 2008 : : Open Category ○ ○ ○ All Categories ○ ○ First Nine Region Score 1. This year, Nancy Munjan and Miaw, the organisers for the game had lax the walking rule and giving the senior golfers an option to ride on the buggy for the second and third nine. The first 27 holes was such a blessed day but after crossing the third nine the cloud started to gather and the rain started to pour followed by loud thunder and lightning. The Club blew the horn to ask all golfers on the field to abandon the game. The first group managed to complete 30 holes but the last group was teeing off for the 28th hole. We decided to call the day off and met up at the Club. Though we did not complete the 36 holes we felt that we should not give up and we hope N a n c y Guess... The junior monthly medal resumes on a monthly basis beginning from the month of June. Club Matchplay Championship The junior golfers participated in the recently concluded Club Matchplay Championship, and our team KGS Young Guns, against all odds, made it all the way to the quarterfinal round. That was an outstanding achievement considering that most of the young players were first-timers in a match-play format. The exposure had been fantastic and both players and parents immensely enjoyed the competition and comradeship. Three other juniors had prior commitment to other teams. Sea Joon played for KKB, while Abg Abd Rahim and Leonard Chin played for Erakristal which went on to win the championship. Pusaka Golf Tournament In the PUSAKA Golf Tournament held in May, Gertrude Lee has outdone the field with a gross score of even par 72 and a nett score of 65, winning the title in the ladies section hands down. Amanda and Sea Joon won the gross event for the men and ladies sections respectively. SICC Junior Invitational Golf Championship 2007 Sea Joon did KGS proud by shooting 72-75-69 in the 3-day championship winning the Overall Gross Runner-up. National Trial 2008 The year 2008 has started well for our junior golfers. The first event outside the club was the MGA National Trial for the national team. The event was played over three courses, i.e. Bukit Jalil GCC, Bukit Unggul GCC and Danau GC, over six days non-stop. Sarawak Golf Association sent 9 boys and 5 girls to the MGA National Trial as part of the SUKMA preparation. Out of the 14 junior players, 5 players were from KGS namely, Abg Abd Rahim, Leonard Chin, Amanda Chin, Joanna Sim and Getrude Lee. Junior News 29 Our girls did very well with Amanda (76, 78, 73, 73, 73, 78) finishing top and Joanna (77, 79, 84, 75, 79, 74) fourth in the girls section. Both have been selected into the National Team Elite Squad while Getrude was selected to be in the backup squad. In January, Amanda was selected to participate in the Philippines Ladies Open where she finished 7th with a 3-day scores of 75, 71 and 76. In April, four of our juniors namely Sea Joon, Abg Abd Rahim, Amanda and Leonard participated in the True Visions International Junior Golf Championship in Thailand. The competition was stiff with the best players from Thailand, Philippines, Hong Kong, Singapore, Taiwan, Myanmar and India. Amanda finished 3rd (76,77,75,77) in the Girls A division, Leonard came in 4th (72,82,76,72) and Abg Abd Rahim tied for 17th in the Boys B Division, while Sea Joon finished 9th (79,73,73,77) in the Boys A Division. In the Team event, our KGS juniors formed a team under the name of MALAYSIA 3 (KGS) and the team did extremely well having won the 3rd place behind Thailand and Philippines. In fact, even if you had a full-time personal chef in your kitchen or if you are able to spend all day, everyday doing nothing but shopping and preparing the ‘best’ regular meals, you still couldn’t be certain that you would be getting all the nutrients your body needs. For example, we have to question the amount of nutrients such as vitamin C found in oranges bought at your grocery store, how long ago was the fruit picked? Which part of the country did it come from? It’s impossible to predict the exact nutrient value of the whole fruit content. The Asian way of cooking, such as deep frying, stewing, etc. may also destroy most of the nutrients and minerals during the process of cooking. That is why we need to take supplements. 33 The Library ○ ○ 34 ○ Author: James Lee ○ Title: Mr. Mystery: The Mystery of The Rajah’s Ruby ○ ○ ○ What is the deadly secret of the Rajah’s Ruby? Berbekalkan keazaman, dia meredah hutan mencari sesuatu yang berharga. Marfuzah ibarart pelangi. Pelangi tidak kekal tapi amat cantik. Selagi berada di atas sana, selama itulah pelangi hanya hiasan alam. Alangkah bagusnya kalau pelangi itu membeku. Ketika itu, barulah pelangi menjadi begitu berharga dan kekal. Tapi, mengapa pelangi kadangkala tidak muncul walaupun selepas hujan panas? ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ Title: My Magical Pony: Shining Star Author: Jenny Oldfield Krista loves all ponies, but there’s something special about shining Star. An avid super senior golfer who lost in the recent 2008 Senior Malaysian Open went to his doctor for his quarterly check-up... The doctor asked him how he was feeling, and the senior golfer said, ‘Things are great and I’ve never felt better. Now I have a 20 year-old bride who is pregnant with my child. So what do you think about that Doc?’ The doctor considered his question for a minute and then began to tell a story. ‘I have an older friend, much like you, who is an avid hunter and never missed a season. One day he was setting off to go hunting. In a bit of a hurry, he accidentally picked up his walking cane instead of his gun. As he neared a lake, he came across a very large wild boar sitting at the water’s edge. He realised he’d left his gun at home and so he couldn’t shoot the magnificent creature. Out of habit he raised his cane, aimed it at the animal as if it were his favourite hunting rifle and went ‘bang, bang’. Miraculously, two shots rang out and the wild boar fell over dead. Now, what do you think of that?’ asked the doctor. The super senior golfer thought for a moment and then said, ‘Logic would strongly suggest that somebody else pumped a couple of rounds into that wild boar.’ The doctor replied, ‘That’s exactly my point.’ One Last Confession Jokes Jokes Men Never Listen! At one of the country’s premier golf club, a gentleman, in urgent need to answer the call of nature, had made several attempts to get into the men’s restroom. But it had always been occupied. A cleaning lady noticed his predicament. “Sir”, she said “You may use the ladies room if you promise not to touch any of the buttons on the wall.” He did what he needed to do, and as he sat there he noticed the buttons he had promised not to touch. Each button was identified by letters: WW, WA, PP, and a red one labeled ATR. He thought nobody would know if he touched them. He couldn’t resist. He pushed WW. Warm water was sprayed gently upon his bottom. What a nice feeling, he thought. Men’s restrooms don’t have nice things like this. Anticipating greater pleasure, he pushed the WA button. Warm air replaced the warm water, gently drying his underside. When this stopped, he pushed the PP button. A large powder puff caressed his bottom adding a fragile scent of spring flower to this unbelievable pleasure. The ladies restroom was more than a restroom, it is tender loving pleasure. After a day’s game of golf, Romeo came home satisfied with his performance on the golf course. His wife gave him a sumptuous dinner. After eating, he suddenly felt ill and was dying. When the powder puff completed its pleasure, he couldn’t wait to push the ATR button which he knew would be supreme ecstasy. He was immediately knocked out by an excruciating pain. His wife maintained a candlelight vigil by his side. She held his fragile hand, tears running down her face. Next thing he knew when he opened his eyes, he was in a hospital bed, and a nurse was staring down at him. Her praying woke him from his slumber. He looked up, and his pale lips began to move slightly. “What happened?” he exclaimed. “The last thing I remember was pushing the ATR button in the ladies toilet at the clubhouse”. “My darling,” he whispered. “Hush, my love,” she said. “Rest, don’t talk.” He was insistent. “I have something that I must confess,” he said in a tired voice. “There isn’t anything to confess,” replied his weeping wife. “Everything’s ok. Go to sleep.” The man blurted out: “No, no, I must die in peace. I ... I slept with your sister, your best friend, her best friend, and your mother!” “I know,” whispered his wife, “that’s why I poisoned you.” chgfqoy “The button ATR is an Automatic Tampon Remover. Your balls are now in this jar, sir”. Golfers never listen to the pro’s advice, do they? Moral of the story: Male golfers are generally chauvinistic and would not listen to the advice from ladies.
