President’s Message
The PHCA Board met on April 13,
2011. Here are the highlights:
The board voted to accept three
new members to the club.
Gary Reed asked to step down from
his PHCA AKC representative position. This is a position that is appointed by the board. We voted to
replace Gary with Dominic Carota.
The board sincerely thanks Gary for
his long-term service to our club
and his continued support of our
breed, and welcomes Dominic in his
new role.
PHCA will once again have a booth
at the AKC Meet the Breeds in
New York in November. Thank
you Stephen and Dominic for making that happen.
Sheila has been scanning archived
club records. By converting our
paper records to electronic media,
she is helping to maintain our history. The board thanks Sheila for all
her hard work on this project.
The board appointed a By-Laws
Revision Committee to update our
by-laws. It has been nine years since
they have been reviewed. The revision committee members are Sheila
Hoffman, Pam Haig and Robert
Newman.

speak to judges in an appropriate
manner and be careful you do not
mislead a judge about your designated role as a PHCA member. It
has come to our attention that two
different judges have misinterpreted
discussions with members, thinking
they were talking to official educational representatives of our club.

It is time to update PHCA's preferred judges list. All PHCA members have the opportunity to provide input on the judges they feel
understand our breed standard and
provide informed evaluations of our
breed. You should have received a
ballot that contains all eligible AKC

The meeting was called to order by PHCA President Cynthia Guinn in the meeting room of the host hotel.
Minutes of the 2008 General Membership meeting were approved as published in the Scribe.
Personal introductions were made.
Recording Secretary report: Report was read in the absence of the recording secretary, Sheila Hoffman. Sheila reported the loss of her
laptop computer, which held some PHCA data. The total number or individual and household members was shared. It was stated that
members who sponsor new members make sure that a signed code of ethics accompany the application.
Corresponding Secretary report: Report was read in the absence of corresponding secretary, Rita Sacks. Rita stated that she continues to
speak with potential PH buyers and forward breed information and our approved breeders list upon request. She feels that the overall
knowledge of inquiries has improved, although still many who have no idea about the care required to own a Pharaoh Hound, or any other
dog.
The list of PHCA approved educational seminars was read, along with thank yous to the presenters.
Treasurer’s report: Jane Hodnett shared the current status of all PHCA accounts and announced that the year end figures would be published in the Scribe. The audits of club records have been completed and found to be acceptable as presented by the audit committees.
Jane further stated that club records had been received from former treasurer Nancy Sowerbutts.
Rescue report: Pam Haig announced that the number of rescues are ever increasing and need for foster homes still remains a problem.
Request for members to consider fostering was put forth.
The subject of permanent IDs was revisited. Some members felt they should not be required to submit ID numbers to the PHCA rescue
committee. Pam pointed out that without these numbers, there would be little rescue could do to help reunite a lost dog with its’ owner/
breeder. Pam further stated that if a breeder chose to withhold the identifying numbers, they should be required to submit proof that the
IDing had been done to confirm compliance with the PHCA by-laws. No decision was reached at this time.
It was announced that the board had approved the rescue of the Pharaoh Hound bitch and her litter of mixed puppies from the shelter in
Texas.
Education: It was announced that the board was currently working out the details for developing the clubs’ “mentor program”. Details
would be shared when complete.
Discussion was held on AKC’s consideration to expand the number of group from the existing 7 to 10. It appears that most are opposed to
this idea.
Health: Health chairman, Stephen Sipperly, reported that 60 people have not responded to the health survey. He went on to explain there
are tools in place to accommodate even those members who no longer have a dog or have experienced no changes since their last survey.
There were 30 non-members who did respond to the survey.
Website: It was agreed there are areas of the website that need to be updated. Carmen Davis is currently working on this.
2010 National Specialty: Stephen reaffirmed that the 2010 National Specialty will be held in September 2010, in Cape Cod, MA. He also
announced there will be 2 additional days of supported entries. It is anticipated that the Eastern Regional Specialty will be held in conjunction with these show.
2010 Western Regional Specialty: No firm time/place has yet been set for the Western Specialties. Several options are being considered
and will be announced when a decision is made.

It was announced that the PHCA is examining the possibility of various fund raisers for the purpose of purchasing traveling “Meet The
Breed” items. Robert Newman stated that he estimates the cost to be in the neighborhood of $1800.00. Any suggestions would be welcomed.
With no further business to discuss, it was moved and seconded that the meeting adjourn.

The meeting was called to order by vice-president, Robert Newman, followed by roll call with members introducing themselves.
The minutes from the 2009 annual meeting will be published in the next newsletter along with those from this meeting.
Recording Secretary Report (Sheila): We have been receiving some new membership applications that will be published in the next issue of
the newsletter. If you are sponsoring a new member, please be sure to remind them that we also require a signed copied of the COE for
their application to be processed. Reminder: 45 days after publication in the Scribe, board then votes. New members will then be notified
approximately 10 weeks after publication in the Scribe. The PHCA now has a total of 138 members.
Corresponding Secretary Report (Rita): Since September, 2009, in reply to inquiries, 36 breed brochures and breeders’ lists were sent out,
each accompanied by a copy of the PHCA Code of Ethics. This is an increase of only 12 compared to the previous year. Not really an overwhelming increase. As always, people were pleased to receive the Code of Ethics for use as a guideline when purchasing a Pharaoh Hound.
People who contact me continue to have a better understanding than ever of what the Pharaoh Hound is like. This is probably due to the
information provided on our website and from various articles on Pharaohs which have appeared in magazines.
Arrangements have been made for the PHCA to participate in the AKC Meet The Breeds event at the Jacob Javits Convention Center in
New York City on October 16 and 17, 2010. Stephen Sipperly and Dominic Carota have agreed to host the PHCA booth and provide
dogs to meet the public.
AKC/Eukanuba has once again invited PHCA to participate in their AKC Meet the Breeds Booth. The event will be held on December 4th
and 5th, 2010, at the Long Beach Convention Center, Long Beach, California. Robert Newman has agreed to coordinate the booth.
The Meet the Breeds booths at both events will have our new AKC Breed Brochure available for the public.

Treasurer report (Jane):
Treasury balance at the end of August was $34,996.08 of which $13,075.95 is earmarked for rescue.
Rescue Committee (Pam): Nemo, one of the males from the FL group, was delivered to his new home in VA on Sheila’s way to the National. Reports indicate that things are going well.
Nubie, the pharaoh in NY, is being fostered by an independent rescue group that is working with PHCA to place her.
Pam reported that we still have only the same few people actually willing to help and foster with rescue. We have a lot of volunteers that
have many excuses when we really need something done. We still need more people to actually help out when there is a need. We continue to see dogs come into rescue without any permanent ID, some of these are from club members who are not in compliance with the
COE.
Health Committee (Stephen): We are getting some 2010 surveys completed by the membership. This is a rolling survey so members can
update it anytime during the calendar year. Reminder: the survey has been improved this year to make it easier for members to just update
their information and not go through the entire survey for dogs that were entered previously.
Education committee (Rita): There has been no activity regarding seminars. As a reminder, anyone who is asked to present a Pharaoh
Hound seminar for PHCA must first contact the Judges Education Committee before accepting on the Club’s behalf in order for it to be an
official PHCA program. This way the judges can receive credit for attending. Please remember that although the PHCA seminar program is
set up for anyone to be a presenter, there are those seminars which have a “hands-on” portion of the program, requiring an experienced
presenter.
The Judges Education Committee has not completed its work on selection of breed mentors, but should have the work completed for
Board approval within the next month.
Ways and Means (Sheila): We still have Mugs, Pins, Water Bottles and Crate tags available. Be sure to check out other items available on
the PHCA store. There is a link on the PHCA website front page.
Awards (Sheila): This year, there are 9 Dual Titlists, 6 Versatility Awards, 5 Versatility Excellent Award, one ROM and two Triple Champions.
Website (Cynthia):
The group revamping the website is still working.
Audit Committee: The audit committee has completed the 2009 report with no issues found.
Perpetual Trophies (Stephen): Nothing new.
Old Business: Thank you’s were given for all that have worked to make the 2010 National a success.
New Business:
There are members who have not provided proof of permanent ID for puppies before they leave their home or have not participated in
the annual health survey. It was unanimously approved by the board that membership renewal, listing on the preferred breeder’s or serving on any committee of the PHCA not be available to members who have not completed the annual health survey or have not provided
proof of permanent ID for puppies they bred. A written notice will be included with the dues renewal reminders sent at the end of this
year.
There will be PHCA lure coursing trials in Southern CA in Oct. and Dec. See the AKC website for details.
Western 2011 will be held on April 15, 2011, at the same location as 2010. Robert will coordinate and include a group dinner for a get
together. Sue Carter will be hiring the judge.
The 2011 National proposal for Canfield, OH, August 3-7 has been approved. This event will be chaired by Meredith Wille and Marie
Henke. As more information is available it will be posted in the newsletter and on the PHCA website.
There will be a PHCA supported entry July 3rd, 2011, with the Wampanoag Kennel club in Wrentham, MA. The Dimors will again provide
trophies for this supported entry.

The 2011 Eastern specialty will be on July 1st and a supported entry on the July 2nd, both in conjunction with the Hachamach Kennel Club
shows in Wrentham, MA.
Anyone interest is assisting with a committee should contact the chair of that committee. More committee members may not be needed,
but all ideas and suggestions are welcome.
As the years go by we really need to have an official club historian. Rebecca Stephens has accepted this position. If you have any past specialty show catalogs or club materials, please contact Rebecca.
A request was received that PHCA hold the money designated for CHIC to be accounted for separately within the club treasury just as we
do for rescue funds. The treasurer will start earmarking these funds in the accounting. We encourage everyone to have your dog’s health
tested for the CHIC program and participate in the DNA bank. All new CHIC dogs will be published in the newsletter.
There was discussion about funds for the National Specialty hosting groups. There are advanced funds available for start-up. Specialties
should be self sufficient if costs are managed and fund raising is planned correctly.
Julie Gwin moved to adjourn the meeting, Bekki Pina seconded the motion. It was unanimously approved and the meeting was adjourned.

Introducing our Best in Field Dual Champion:
BIF DC Galadrial’s Red Letter Day, JC
Cayenne is co-owned by Andrea Schokker and Sheila Hoffman.
She lives with the Schokkers in Duluth. MN but has come to play in the south a couple times.
In January 2011 Cayenne completed her bench championship one day and the next won BOB over
two top specials in Texas. In February she went to stay with Grahm Swazye-Fudge to show but they
played at a coursing trial where she went BIF one day! Cayenne is having a great time while with
Grahm. She is heading to shows in Minnesota with Andrea but we’ll see her at the National in Ohio.
