All Bahamian Scholar Athletes 2012
All Bahamian Scholar Athletes 2012 By: Winston T. Marshall In congratulating the organizing committee of the now Annual All Bahamian Scholar Athletes Awards, special tribute must be paid to the founders or individuals who saw the need, and thus conceptualized such a program. It should be recognized that this award is modeled after the All-American Award, however, the inclusion of an academic criterion (minimum of 2.5 grade point average) makes a significant difference. The other main difference relates to the fact that an opportunity is seized upon, to honour some individuals, who have made significant contributions. The individuals in the latter category, are referred to as Honourary All Bahamians. When the results of the 2012 BGCSE were released, the nation went into shock, in realizing that something is drastically wrong, and that either a review of academic performance or teaching methods must be addressed as a matter of urgency, or more focus must be given to academic excellence. This article is not an attempt to be more critical than necessary, but to highlight the fact that, The Parents Association of Track and Field, would be facilitated in their efforts, if greater effort is paid to student-athletes academic performance. Schools, parents, coaches, clubs and all in the sporting fraternity must encourage and assist with this effort. In this regard, a cursory analysis of the 19 Scholar Athlete Award recipients of 2011, is done here: Nine of the individuals went on to the college/university projected. These are: Patrick Bodie-Cowley County Community College, James Audley Carey-Howard University, O’Jay Ferguson-Western Texas College, Tynia Gaither-University of Georgia, Shavez HartSouth Plains College, Stephen Newbold-Florida State University, Javon Rolle-Benedict College, Leonardo Forbes-College of the Bahamas Six of the awardees of the class of 2011 were in their respective graduating class in 2012. These are: Andre Colebrook, Shaunae Miller, Lathone & Latario Collie-Minns, Delano Davis and Andre Wells. Athletes from the 2011 All Bahamian Scholar Athlete group, graduating in 2013 are: Devynne Charlton, Dannielle Gibson and Pedrya Seymour. Darren Young is in the graduating class of 2014. As we continue to monitor the academic and athletic performances of these athletes from the Award Class of 2011, we congratulate those of 2012, and encourage all student-athletes, to continue to strive to perform at their best in their academics. 28 Message from The Governor General Good evening scholar athletes, parents, teachers, coaches, family and friends, corporate and individual sponsors, members of The Bahamas Association of Athletic Associations, ladies and gentlemen. Bahamian Track and Field athletes continue to set a standard of excellence in the world that brings great pride and joy to the people of our country. This year being an Olympic year, the flag of the Bahamas was once again raised and the national anthem played in the London Olympic stadium for our men's 4x400 meter relay team that won the Gold medal, setting a new national record in the process, but more significantly, dethroning the United States of America men's relay team which had dominated that event for approximately sixty years. At the London Olympics, I'm told, twenty four of the twenty five member Bahamas Olympic team represented track and field and seventy percent of the members were first time athletes some of whom were former All Bahamian Scholar Athletes. Being a student-athlete is challenging because you have to juggle practice schedules, traveling for competitions, devoting time sometimes, I am told, five days weekly to practice sessions, with your classes. I am pleased that each of you has been able to strike the critical balance between prioritizing your athletic and academic careers. There are countless success stories about student athletes, who maintain high academic standards while competing, in high school and later at college. And, after their athletic careers they become very successful in their professional careers. Indeed in our country, many of our citizens are examples of "models of success", former scholar athletes, playing significant roles in nation building- in government, business, education and other institutions. So the All Bahamian Scholar Athlete awards are very very significant to recognizing junior studentathletes who are just starting their journey towards a brighter future by concentrating on their academic studies as a key component. What is very encouraging to me is to observe a transition in the gender of awardees. Past awards were dominated by females however, the gap in the ratio of females to males has closed. For the 2012 class of Scholar Athletes, totaling nineteen, there are ten girls and nine boys almost a one to one ratio. Two scholar athletes are from Eleuthera, one from Grand Bahama and the rest from New Providence. The boys have the highest GPA’s; with an overall average of 3.03, and the girls overall average is 2.95. Like we celebrated during the 2011 awards, we have among this 2012 class, several athletes who represented the Bahamas at the World Junior Championships in Barcelona Spain. Please join me in congratulating Shaunae Miller, who is attending The University of Georgia as a freshman. Scholar athletes, you are living in an exciting time, however, juxtaposed in a challenging global environment where countries and people's are facing immense hardships, and this country is recovering from the worst economic down turn since the depression that some of you learn about in your studies. But while we are experiencing this period in our country, the need for Bahamians with marketable skills to compete in this global marketplace is essential to our sustained development in the future. While you pursue your athletic and academic careers, I encourage you to think about how you can contribute to your country. In the words of a former President of the Unites States who coined the statement, "Ask not what your country can do for you but what you can do for your country". The future of this country will require the best and brightest minds to chart its course. You have started that process by being recognized here as the top Scholar Athletes from among your peers. - H. E. Sir Arthur Foulkes 1 The proud parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins and godparents of Message from The President of the BAAAs Athletes are usually celebrated for their talents and performances. They devote considerable time in training and preparation developing their skills that eventually produce the end result we celebrate: the outstanding performances on the Track and Field. At many high school and colleges, athletes must maintain a level of academic performance to be eligible to compete. In the main however scholastic performance is essential to complete their studies. I am pleased to see that high schools in our country are adopting a policy with the view that academic studies must be a priority for the student – athlete. After all, there is a life after athletics, therefore, the message must resonate among budding junior athletes that equal time and effort should be devoted to their academics. The number of junior athletes participating in BAAA programs annually is increasing. The success and recognition to the athletes and country we believe is creating great interest among our young people. The All Bahamian Scholar Athlete Award endorsed by the BAAA, recognizes those outstanding Bahamian student athletes who participated in the BAAA athletic events during the year. It highlights, however, those student athletes who excelled in both academics and athletics. Meticulous time, research and analysis are put into the effort to identify the top scholar athletes from among hundreds of athletes who distinguished themselves from their peers. A number of the recipients in this year’s group have exceeded the minimum eligibility. I note that the administrators of this program took the decision to raise the grade point average from 2.0 to 2.5 in line with the minimum eligibility requirements for entrance into a USA Division one college or university. Coaches from USA institutions recruit our junior athletes after graduating from high school. Therefore, the change was made to raise their chances of obtaining athletic scholarships to USA schools where the minimum GPA is 2.50 for student athletes. Special praise goes to the organizers of this event, in particular Mr. Harrison Petty, President of the Parents Association of Track and Field and his committee of volunteers who provide the administrative support. We often say among ourselves that the work performed by the officers and members of the BAAA is a “labour of love”, not for monetary benefit or personal recognition. So it is fitting to express our heartfelt thanks for a job well done. 2013 is expected to be a busy year for Bahamian Track and Field. With the growth of new athletes entering our programs continuing at a rapid pace, it is my wish that the number of student athletes distinguishing themselves as Scholar Athletes will increase as well. I would like to publicly express my congratulations to all the awardees and encourage you to continue to raise the bar high. Alexandria, affectionately known as Alex Congratulate her for being recognized as a 2012 All Bahamian Scholar Athlete and wish her continued success as she begins the next phase of her academic and athletic career. We are so proud of you Alex. With God's help and guidance, We know that you will continue to make us proud. - Mike Sands 2 27 PAST "GOLDEN CORD SCHOLARS" Honourary All Bahamian Scholar Recipient 2010 GOLDEN CORD SCHOLARS CLAUDIA FERGUSON James Audley Carey & Katerina Smith 2011 GOLDEN CORD SCHOLARS Javon Rolle Pedrya Seymour hhh Acknowledgements Congratulations to Brashe' Wood from Her parents, family and friends. Marshall “Heroes are the people who do what has to be done, when it needs to be done, regardless of the consequences” - Author unknown to me In a continuing effort to fully expose and report the tremendous contribution and sacrifice of a number of individuals to the success of Bahamian track and field, we hereby salute one of those individuals, who has set an example for athletes and officials and worked tirelessly in the development of our athletic programs and facilities for the last five decades, often behind the scenes. We remain of the firm view that it is critical, for the sake of posterity and historical correctness, but equally importantly, in some small way, to say thank you publicly, to these unsung heroes. Honouree Doyle Alexander Burrows, who was inducted into the Central American & Caribbean Hall of Fame in 2012, is one such individual. In 1960 he completed high school At Northwestern High school in Miami Florida, where he was an all star athlete. A multi sport athlete, our honoree was an exceptional rugby, basketball, volleyball and American football player, however, he was most valuable to his high school sports program as a decathlete on the track and field team. His prowess as a track athlete was recognized by BAAA officials in 1962 when he was selected as a National Team member to represent the Bahamas as a decathlete at the CAC games which was held in Kingston, Jamaica. Prime Minister Perry Christie, Dr. Gail North Saunders, Elaine Thompson, Joan Darville and Althea Rolle Clarke, were also on that historic National Team and were honoured this week on the 50th anniversary of the meet. Doyle was the beneficiary of a number of training courses and seminars in facilities management, sponsored by the IAAF and Olympic Solidarity. He was to spend more than thirty years with government, overseeing public sporting facilities and is recognized as the person that led the development of the original 4 Thomas A Robinson Sports Stadium from inception. In the case of this honouree, it is quite a lesson to learn that, while some individuals are not involved in much outside of their family, here is an individual who had four extra passions…..his church, (a devoted Anglican) sports (a committed Pioneer) and Junkanoo (a founding member of the Valley Boys)….and a love for horticulture. From a sports perspective, we hereby highlight his level of skill, dedication and commitment to nation-building through sports. Doyle referred to as “Mr. Burrows” to athletes and officials alike, has made major contributions in the areas of Facilities Management, Federation Administration and National Team Management. You could count on the track being ready for meets when Doyle was responsible for its upkeep. In the area of national team management, the writer can attest to the last thirteen years, when we have traveled to many parts of the globe for track and field meets, particularly at International Association of Athletic Associations (IAAF) World Championships in Seville Spain (1999) to Edmonton Canada in 2001, to Paris France in 2003, to Osaka Japan in 2007, to Berlin Germany in 2009, and the Ibero Championships in Rio, and the Pan American and Commonwealth Games. Doyle was there to assist, whether he was officially a part of the management team or not. Mexico City Olympics It is amazing to note that Doyle was the team manager at the Olympic Games in 1968…..Wow! This team, much smaller than those of today, had as members the all-star 4x100 relay team combination of Tommy Robinson, Bernard Nottage, Kevin Johnson, George Collie, Philly Johnson, and Norris Stubbs. What an exciting road he has traveled. Conclusion The sporting fraternity congratulates Doyle, Judith and the family, on this well deserved recognition. Congratulates ALL SCHOLAR ATHLETES On a productive and successful season. Special recognition is paid to the undernoted scholar athletes’ personal coaches for keeping their athletes balanced between athletics and education. The concept introduces the track club system to the less fortunate and also better our pool of athletes for the future. We have targeted student athletes from the ages of 10 through 16 or grades 6 thru 10 who can contribute to the development of track and field and thereby improving their chances for a better life. No longer will we see these athletes get lost year in and year out because there was no avenue for them to continue to improve. They will be coached, evaluated and guided to further their track careers with an objective to obtain scholarships from universities or colleges in the USA and return home with marketable skills and prepared for the job market. With the success of our “Golden Knights” winning the Gold for the Bahamas in the 4X400m during the 2012 Olympics, we are now in the position to see our athlete numbers increase. We must now use this as a tool to reach out to more Chris Browns, Demetrius Pinders, Michael Mathieus and Ramon Millers of this Bahamas. I must congratulate our former Government for believing in the program by giving a Ten Thousand Dollar grant this year. However the grant did not cover what we really needed to see the full potential of what this program was designed to do.However we were able to accommodate sixty three athletes. To date fifty three were actually recruited and placed into the club system. We will solicit the balance of funds necessary to accommodate the kids now in our program. Evaluation of the student athletes will be done in January to see how they have developed under the club system. We have a detailed plan and system that would track how the athletes will move forward. Student athletes in this program have been placed in every discipline so far and again we appreciate all the clubs that opened their doors to our participants. We are in the process of structuring an incentive program for all coaches involved because we are aware that it takes funding to make this social intervention program a success. We expect 25% of the program participants to become elite athletes and increase our numbers of national team members for international competition. The remaining 75% would benefit from having the life changing opportunity of furthering their education through the sport of track and field .The program is on its way to become as successful as we intended it to be through our supportive coaches and clubs. We have now established a steering committee and more improvements and ideas are now on the table to include the family islands. We look forward to receiving support from the Government and corporate Bahamas to assist us in the continuation of this program for the benefit of the hidden talented young persons of this country. The budget for the program to be run properly and professionally is seventy five thousand dollars per year. This budget includes family island involvement and will cover the cost of all the necessary coaching resources, uniforms, training shoes, gym fees and other material. We look forward to the day when all inner city youth have access to proper coaching and a way up through the use of their talents. 17 ProfileS cont’d. 16 AnDRE COLEBROOK CARMIESHA COX DAnnIELLE GIBSOn Central Eleuthera High School Striders g.P.A.: 3.09 Bronze Medalist 800m - Carifta Architectural Engineer Aquinas College Star Trackers g.P.A.: 3.04 Silver Medalist 100m - Carifta, 200m - Jr. CAC gold Medalist 100m - Jr. CAC Business Management St. Augustine’s College Ambassadors/PVS g.P.A.: 3.45 gold Medalist long Jump - Carifta Biomechanical Engineer KHYLE HIGGS LATARIO COLLIE-MInnS LATHOnE COLLIE-MInnS St. Augustine’s College Club Monica Athletics g.P.A.: 3.00 Bronze Medalist Discus - Jr. CAC Forensic Accountant Teleos Christian School Jumpers Inc. g.P.A.: 3.33 gold Medalist long Jump - Carifta Bronze Medalist World Jr. Championships Aeronautical Engineer Teleos Christian School Jumpers Inc. g.P.A.: 3.67 Silver Medalist long Jump - Jr. CAC and Carifta Aeronautical Engineer 13 ProfileS cont’d. 14 JUAnnAE LEWIS SHAUnAE MILLER MESHA nEWBOLD Bishop Michael Eldon School, g.B.
