GATE KEEPERS NEEDED
AT CAMARILLO MEETINGS
Volunteers are needed to man the electric gate at the Camarillo breakfast meeting to let our members in and out of the airport on the
first Saturday of each month. Help is needed from 8:00 a.m. until 9:15 a.m., and after breakfast when the cars start leaving until about
10:30 a.m.
We would like to establish a list of volunteers for the next several months. Everyone should be willing to take a turn. It’s not a difficult
job, and you’ll get a chance to greet our members as they come and go. Each volunteer need only sign up for one of the two shifts each
Saturday.
Please see Gary Gasperino to volunteer. Let’s lend a hand and share this responsibility with the few, faithful members who seem to do it
month after month.
Thank you,
Your Board of Directors

I am pleased
to report that
the state of
our club is excellent!
We
celebrate the
monthly return
of our beloved
Der Auspuff,
attendance at
our breakfasts
continues to surpass our expectations, participation at our monthly tours is phenomenal, and a growing number of members
are offering their assistance in planning and
executing our various functions. What could
be better?
Furthermore, we take great pleasure and
pride in informing you that two of our dedicated and loyal members have been nomi-
nated for national honors bestowed by the
national office of PCA.
Mike, Pamuela, Christopher, and Julie
Hodson have been nominated for PCA Family of the Year! The reasons are quite simple
and self-evident. For four years, the Hodson
family has managed our Goodie Store recording exceptional sales and revenue for the club.
They attended 99% of all club activities and
staffed the table displaying our goods. They
have hosted Board of Directors meetings
at their home. They have used their airport
hangar as a storage facility for our belongings, and even hosted a movie night at that
site. Christopher and Julie have staffed the
security gate at the Camarillo airport, helped
transport and shuttle drivers at our autocross
venues, and have greeted arriving guests.
Barry Weinstein has been nominated for
The Lazar-Blanchard Memorial Award for
the PCA Enthusiast of the Year! Shortly after joining our region, Barry and Valerie
took over the management of our activities
and greatly expanded our offerings. They
have attended virtually all of our breakfasts,
each and every monthly tour, and attended
the Parade Portland in 2006. Due to Barry’s
leadership and enthusiasm, attendance at our
events keeps growing, and the joy of participating has become infectious.
Please join me in congratulating the above
on the honor of being nominated, and let’s all
wish them well in their respective categories.
Their nomination and hoped-for selection is
also an honor to our region as it continues
to foster such dedication among its membership.
Thank you one and all.

Santa Barbara Region Porsche Club of America
The Santa Barbara Region Board of Directors at its April 11, 2007
meeting chose the TEACh Scholarship Program of Ventura County
as the club’s charity beneficiary for calendar year 2007.
The TEACh Scholarship Fund provides college and trade school
funding for Ventura County foster care youth. As presently constituted, TEACh is a project of the Ventura County Community
Foundation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation. VCCF controls the
endowment funds and oversees the process of selecting the recipients. The project anticipates forming its own 501(c)(3) corporation
within the next six months to better enable it to raise funds for its
endowment account.
Larry Matheney was part of the founding group in 1994 and
currently serves as Chair. In its thirteen-year history, the fund has
awarded more than $125,000 in scholarships, helping more than
100 young people further their educations. It has just completed the
screening for the 2007/08 school year by awarding $28,000 in total
help to 15 foster care youth.
The amount of the club’s contribution will be determined at the
end of this calendar year.

Being a member of the Porsche Club of Santa Barbara means something different to everyone. Being new to California and to Santa Barbara, I joined the club because I love Porsches and wanted to get to know other people with the same interest. Becoming the editor of the Der
Auspuff has been more rewarding than I anticipated in that my new 600+ friends are fun, enthusiastic, welcoming, compassionate, interesting,
humorous, and much more. I have met only a few of you but look forward to meeting you all at some point. I recommend that other new
members volunteer at the numerous events planned and discover some of the great people in our club. You will never wonder what to do
when you have free time as there is always something exciting happening, usually centered around our beloved Porsches. Please remember to
keep both hands on the wheel, watch the road, and drive safe.

Winding Roads Poker Run and Pizza
Article by Michael Jacobs and photos by Mike
Turek.
March 24, 2007 -- The cards were definitely in our favor as this year’s poker run
went off as perfectly planned. Unfortunately, last year’s attempt was sidetracked by a
large tanker truck which had overturned
and closed the freeway. For today’s event, we
would meet up in Santa Barbara in the Sears
parking lot. Fifty people in 27 nicely cleaned
Porsches would try their luck of the cards.
Among the gamblers were two father-anddaughter teams. They were Gary Weaver and
his daughter, Stacy; and Larry Stoops and his
daughter, Brandy. Also trying their hands
were some first timers: Anuroop (webmaster)
and Rashi Gupta driving a dark blue Boxster;
Gody and Suzanne Weniger in their new
cobalt blue Boxster; and David and Sandy
Kinder in a mint condition black 1956 356.
Today’s event would consist of drawing
one card at five different locations. The first
draw was in the Sears parking lot and was
dealt by Barry (smooth hands) Weinstein.
From there we drove onto Highway 192 to
collect our second card from Michael (I don’t
know how to play poker) Jacobs. Continuing
on this beautiful tree-lined highway to the
third draw by Luz and Dave (I’ve got a joke
for you) Mosesson that took you to this remote park called Toro Canyon Park. For the
fourth draw we continued on 192 until we
hit Highway 150 which took us to the Lake
Casitas entrance where dealers Mike and
Karen (we’ve got your winning card) Turek
were located. From there we continued on
highway 150 into Ojai to our final draw and
lunch at Boccali’s for pizza, salad, and drink.
It started out as an overcast day, but as
the drive progressed and the cards were dealt
it turned into another beautiful day. All be-

ing said, it seemed everyone enjoyed lunch,
the drive, and most of all the camaraderie of
fellow PCA members. Surprisingly, it seemed
that everyone
was able to find
their way and
make all the
stops.
Lastly, a
special
note
of thanks to
all those who
helped make
this event a
success: Dave
and Luz Mosesson, Mike
and Karen Turek, Michael
Jacobs, and last, and certainly not least, our
activities co-chairs Barry and Valerie Wein-

stein who put this whole event together. By
the way, those of you that had the winning
poker hands, the dealers are still waiting for
their cut of the action (ha ha). Look forward
to seeing you all at the next SBR event.
R.U.F. Committee Visits Home of Will Rogers
Article and Photos by Nicolas Liakas
March 29, 2007 was one of those perfect
SoCal days. Bright sunny skies accompanied
by gentle temperatures and caressing breezes
greeted the 25 members of our club who
traveled in 11 Porsches, one BMW and one
Oldsmobile 442 to the Pacific Palisades to
tour the home of Will Rogers, an American
legend.
The adventure began at the Camarillo
Airport Café. The group then traveled
through the Santa Monica Mountains and
along Mulholland Highway to Malibu Canyon, and then on to PCH southbound until
it reached Sunset Boulevard in Pacific Palisades. A few miles inland and the retirees and
unemployed travelers entered the grounds of
the state historic park. The almost 200 acres
were alive with the colors of spring, and
although it could not be seen, the Pacific
Ocean provided a slightly chilling effect on
the sun’s hot rays.
Waiting for the group’s arrival was Mike
Allen, the park’s historian and trivia cham-
pion. Mike took the pack into the home
of Will Rogers, first stopping in the wing
that housed important visitors to the ranch.
The list of dignitaries includes the names of
Presidents, monarchs, religious leaders, Hollywood legends, and so on. The north wing
served as the residence for the Rogers family,
and wife Betty’s touch was easy to see. The
three children also left their mark, and the
abode was sprinkled with numerous photographs of all family members. The ranch was
built in the late 1920s into the mid-1930s,
and was completed just six months before
Will Rogers’ unfortunate death in an airplane crash in 1935.
The 90-minute guided tour provided a
unique insight to Rogers’ life, and the simple
values he cherished. We also learned of his
eagerness to help those in distress during the
Great Depression, and several tales were offered of his generosity to and compassion
for the suffering man during those difficult
times. We learned about the soul of the man,
as well as his fame and fortune.
Immediately following the tour, the group
seized several picnic tables on the grounds
and launched into a luncheon feast. There
were plenty of salads, sandwiches and soft
drinks, as well as chocolate cake. By 2:30 in
the afternoon, everyone returned to his/her
Porsche and commenced the journey home.
It was a great day for all who participated.
If you want to join this committee on its
mid-week driving adventures, contact Nicolas Liakas at [email protected] or

April Camarillo Breakfast
Meeting
Article by Barry and Valerie Weinstein
April 7, 2007 - The day before Easter
Sunday was foggy and overcast, but still
we managed to draw 113 PCA/SBR
members in 50 Porsches and 13 alternate vehicles to our monthly breakfast
club meeting at the Way Point Café in
Camarillo.
This being “alternate vehicle” month,
a number of people brought their “other” means of transportation and displayed them at the meeting. The parking area in front of the café was filled
with Porsches, a Honda Gold Wing,
a few Harley-Davidson motorcycles, a
vintage Rolls Royce, a Corvette, Mercedes, Lotus, a few Ferraris, etc. Even
our President, Nicolas Liakas, came to
the meeting on his alternative vehicle
– a shiny new skateboard. Not to be
outdone by his boss, Vice-President
Gary, “The Big Kahuna” Gasperino,
our resident aging surfer, arrived early
atop his vintage longboard.
We’d also like to welcome a few new
members who showed up for the meeting. Oscar Briones, from Santa Barbara, came in his 2001 C4 Coupe. John
and Bianca DiGuiseppe, from Westlake
Village, drove to the Way Point Cafe in
their ’07 Carrera S.
John Shutt, who is not exactly a new
member, joined us for breakfast as well.
He actually became a member of SBR/
PCA in 1979. John drives an ’04 C4S.
This was the first time John has ever
come to a breakfast meeting, although
he’s been in the club for close to thirty years! Hope we don’t have to wait
another thirty years to share breakfast
with you again, John.
The meetings cover events coming up as well as provide information
that is not as readily found elsewhere.
We welcome everyone to attend these
meetings and meet your fellow Porsche
drivers.
Once again we would like to remind
you all that we need help in manning
the gate at the airport. We are fortunate that we are allowed to park all of
our vehicles alongside the taxi way in
front of the Way Point Café during our
meetings. However, part of the deal is
we must control the gate and only allow members of our club on the airport
grounds. It takes very little time and
will be a big help to your fellow club
members who because of lack of assistance are forced to stand at the gate for
lengthy periods. We once figured out
that if everyone who attends the meetings took their turn as gatekeepers, no
one would have to spend more than 20
minutes a year at this job! Those of you
willing to help out, please contact our
Vice President, Gary Gasperino, and
let him know of your availability.
New members John and Bianca DiGuiseppe
from Westlake Village. They drive a 2007 997S.
John Shutt and his 2004 C4S. He lives in Camarillo. He has
been a member since 1979.
Brad and Judy Hunt and their 1966 Corvette.
Fully restored by Brad personally.

April Santa Barbara Breakfast Meeting
Article by Dan Lindsay and Photos by Nick Liakas
I nearly didn’t find a spot left on Stearns Wharf for the monthly
breakfast meeting on April 14th. It seems that you have to leave
earlier and earlier for these events. A total of some 58 Porsche enthusiasts woke early Saturday morning to join in for breakfast on one of
a handful of ‘alternative vehicle month’ activities. We had 26 beautiful Porsches and 7 of those alternate vehicles (from Ferrari to Ford)
assembled on the wharf under overcast skies. Forever punctual, Nick
Liakas got the assemblage going at 9:00 AM and began by introducing a few prospective members and first timers to the Santa Barbara
breakfast. Henry Bartley of Santa Barbara drives a 2000 C4 Cab. He
came to check out the breakfast and the club and became a member
that day. Ron and Sherry Maudsley of Santa Barbara own a 2005
Carrera GT and were also scoping out the activities. Relatively new
PCA member Joe Pesci of Oxnard brought guest Steve Olander to see
how Porsche clubbers find any excuse to drive their cars. Mike Zois
from Santa Barbara was welcomed back to the region after a couple of
years away. Wayne Veca brought his 1989 Carrera Targa.
Just around the corner is the May 12th Zone 8 El Camino Real Rally,
which is chaired by Joe Schneider. Get online to download the rally
information.
Vice President Gary Gasperino reminded
us to volunteer to man the access gate for
the Camarillo airport breakfasts. The task
should not be left to the same people every
month. Talk to him about taking a thirtyminute time slot.
The Santa Barbara Region is a diverse club
with most members apparently centered in
the Thousand Oaks and Ventura area, so it
was a pleasure to see such participation centered about Santa Barbara. We nearly ran
out of seats in The Harbor Restaurant this
time!
Nick reminded us of upcoming events such
as the trip to Yosemite in May, adding that four
slots are open again after recent cancellations.
(Contact him soon if you want to get in!) He
also spoke of the upcoming autocross on April
22nd and Gimmick Rally and picnic of April
28th. Dave Stone spoke about this year’s Porsche
Parade at San Diego and advised that last year’s
successful food bank drive would be repeated
again with the trek starting in Solvang with an
overnight stay in Palm Springs on the way to
San Diego. Again, we’re always looking for an
excuse to drive! Nick also reintroduced Janice
Herndon who has taken on the role of the Der
Auspuff editor. She successfully published her
first Der Auspuff for April 2007! We’re back to
a monthly magazine with everyone’s help with
articles. Contact Janice with your story ideas.

Porsche Magazines: Subscriptions and Web Sites
Article Ken Koop—The Yellowstone Region
(Old Faithful Newsletter)
There are some excellent magazines available both in hard copy and on the internet
for anyone interested in learning more about
Porsches. Most of these magazines publish
articles on both old and new models as well
as comparisons on various types of Porsches.
I will try to describe the flavor and quality of
each one of the magazines listed below.
Excellence magazine-www.excellencemag.com --- This is a high quality magazine
with feature articles on all Porsches ranging
from 356’s to the current 997. They include
comparisons, do it yourself, Tuner and race
preparation articles. This magazine has high
quality pictures and is very well written. If
you subscribe to one Porsche magazine, this
is the one to have. Published nine times a
year.
GT Porsche-www.gtpurelyporsche.com
---A high quality, all encompassing magazine
published in England with a British flavor
and a good perspective on the European
view of the car world. This magazine features
articles on the entire range of Porsche mod-
els. GT Purely Porsche is another excellent
all around magazine and a worthwhile read.
Published monthly.
911 & Porsche World-www.chpltd.com
--- A British all encompassing magazine.
Probably one step below the two magazines
mentioned above. A quality magazine with
articles on all models of Porsches being represented. It covers the European racing scene.
Published monthly.
Total 911-www.total911.co.uk --- A high
quality British magazine covering only 911’s.
The articles are informative and the photography is very good. If 911’s are your main
passion, then this might be your magazine.
Published monthly.
Christophorus-www.porsche.com/english/usa/news/christophorus --- A high
quality magazine with excellent photography
and published by Porsche featureing articles
focused primarily on current models and occasionally on older and race models. It covers driving tours in Europe as well as dining
and hotel information along the route. Also,
it gives you an inside look at what is going
on at Porsche in the Corporate Offices, Exclusive Department, Production Plants, museum and what Porsche is currently offering
to its customers. This is not a car enthusiast’s
magazine but offers more of a general overview on “Porsche Culture”. If behind the
scene information and viewing some beautiful European scenery is important to you,
then this might be a magazine you want to
subscribe to. Published six times per year.
Velocity-www.porscheownersclub.org -Published by the “Porsche Owners Club”
geared to Porsche Club Racing and features
racing types of articles. Club races and results
are published, do it yourself articles, and an
occasional article on current non-race models
are included. The quality of the magazine is
below that of all the magazines listed above,
but if you like club racing and what is going
on in that arena, this magazine offers the very
best coverage. Published quarterly.
356 Registry-www.356registry.org --356 Registry Magazine provides coverage of
the 356 type Porsches. The magazine is published six times a year.
Panorama-www.pca.org --- Everyone in
the club gets “Panorama” as a club member,
since everyone is familiar with the magazine,
I am listing this FYI.

Goodie Store Report
May 2007
Get Your Goodies at the Goodie Store
Hello from Jeanne, John, and Jacob, your new Goodie Store people.
We have big shoes to fill following Pamuela and Mike, so please be
patient, as we get up to speed. You can find us at the Saturday morning breakfasts in both Camarillo and Santa Barbara at the beginning
of each month. Also, we will be at special events such as Autofest and
Concours. Since it is difficult to display our entire inventory at the
breakfasts, we will display a complete listing of our available inventory
at each breakfast for you to peruse. If we don’t have an item with us, we
can figure out how to get it to you if you want something. Our display
at the Santa Barbara breakfast is especially limited since you can’t fit
much into a Cayman S. We could get more into John’s 911 SC, but
Jeanne shuns the poor car ever since we bought her Cayman S. An abbreviated snapshot of things for sale include:
PCA and SBR baseball caps@ $20.00
SBR Coffee Mugs @$3.00
Various PCA and SBR decals@ $1.50 to $4.00
PCA/SBR License Plate Frames @$2.00
Various SBR Polo Shirts @ $25.00
Sweat Shirts @ $40.00
Ladies SBR Tank Tops @ $15.00 (sorry, no men’s tank tops available)
Also, if you need a name badge, we have order forms available at the
breakfasts and other events. You simply fill in the form, prepay, and we
mail you your badge.
P.S. Congratulations to Jeanne and John on their new grandson!!

A DAY AT MEGUIAR’S
(Or, skipping the Camarillo breakfast to learn how to wash my car)
Article Bill Sampson
On April 7, 2007, Meguiar’s Inc., the wellknown supplier of car care products and a
staunch supporter of our car hobby, hosted
a number of car enthusiasts at the company’s
international headquarters in Irvine. Tom
MacDonald, a Meguiar’s rep and Presidentelect of the Southern California Woodie
Club, invited several of his woodie friends,
including this author, to a class on caring for
a vehicle’s appearance. Tom was ably assisted
by the course instructor, Tim Larson.
I was particularly fascinated by the history
of the company itself. Frank Meguiar, Jr.,
the founder, initially developed a furniture
polish at about the time that horseless carriages came into being. Frank realized that
the finishes were similar and soon developed
a product better than any of the other furniture polishes and also recognized a market
for the same product line for use on automobiles. I remember as a young boy reading
the Pasadena Star News and seeing reports
of industrial league softball and basketball
leagues and hearing of “Mirror Glaze” as one
of the better competitors. I did not realize
until early this month that I had, as a preteen, been introduced to one of America’s
best known family businesses, Meguiar’s.
Barry Meguiar, the grandson of the founder,
upon graduation from Pasadena City College
in 1964, went to work for the company. He
has grown it from the $600,000 company he
joined to the international powerhouse he
now heads. The company has for decades
been a leading supplier to the commercial
market for car appearance products but Barry
recognized that there are millions of car guys
out there who wanted similar products they
could use to produce, in their home garages,
18 May 2007
show car finishes for their own vehicles. Permit me this digression: I use the term “car
guys” specifically including women, including our own hardworking car guy and editor,
Janice Herndon.
Our instructor, Tim, was probably less
than half the age of the average student but
was nevertheless very knowledgeable about
his company’s products and its vision. The
employees obviously share the owner’s passion for excellence. We were taught to eschew detergent for washing our cars – and
yes, Meguiar’s does recommend washing before undertaking further work. Many of us
for years have dried our vehicles with terry
cloth and/or a chamois. Meguiar’s now recommends the use of micro fiber towels instead of these items since they remove more
particles post-washing and leave fewer swirls.
[Disclosure: as the person who drove his
woodie furthest to attend the class I will receive a package of these towels as a gift from
the company, which has no idea I am writing
this article.]
After washing, inspect by simply and
gently running finger tips over the surface
as well as visually. Bonded impurities, such
as tree sap, remaining on the surface can be
removed with clay. A test car belonging to
a fellow woodie club member became the
subject of our collective ministrations. The
paint on this vehicle was even worse than
the decades old paint on my 1948 Mercury.
Simple hand rubbing with fine clay, lubricated with Meguiar’s Quick Detailer or a similar product, produced dramatic differences in
the smoothness of the paint.
Impurities left following the clay treatment
(about a half-hour for an entire car) are then
Santa Barbara Region Porsche Club of America
removed with cleaner. There are a number of
products with which to accomplish this task.
Again, dramatic differences on our “test” car
were demonstrated.
I was undoubtedly amongst those who used
the terms “wax” and “polish” interchangeably.
However, our patient instructors taught us
that polishing is a process that smoothes the
paint surface as opposed to waxing, which
protects the surface, to say nothing of enhancing the shine that polishing to a highdegree of smoothness produces.
There was more to learn. All of the consumer products offered by Meguiar’s are
designed for application by hand, however,
all may be used with a buffer. The rotary
buffers available at the corner drugstore are
not, however, correct. A dual-action buffer limited to relatively low speeds (around
2000 rpm) is the tool of choice. Naturally
our hosts produce such an item. Our hosts
emphasized that hand application would
achieve the same results albeit in more time.
The neophyte car guys, or more likely guy,
me, then were brought to the part of the
program that we had envisioned as the start.
The final step is waxing. Naturally there are
a variety of choices, including natural and
synthetic products. Although Meguiar’s emphasizes the distinction between polish and
wax, they do offer a single step product for
those two steps as well as separate choices,
including carnauba waxes and those based on
silicone.
Anyone who has attended car shows for
very long has accumulated a garage full of
Quick Detailer or Speed Detailer. I have
used these products before my education
and have found them useful for removing
A Day at Meguiar’s Article
Continued from Page 18
the bugs and dirt inevitably attached to my
“baby” between Malibu and, for example,
Santa Barbara for the Woodies on the Beach
show. [The products clearly work – Tom
MacDonald’s ‘shoebox’ Ford was acclaimed
the vehicle with the best finish at the 2006
Woodies at the Beach.] The final items I
mention in this paragraph are maintenance
products to help preserve all the hard work
from cleaning to waxing.
Our class concluded with too much pizza.
There were no sales pitches. There didn’t
need to be. Most of us, armed with our
newly minted detailing degrees, were only
too happy to purchase products from our fellow car guys at Meguiar’s. The day of education was worth missing a breakfast with my
Porsche friends.

This is one of the most popular events of the year and always “sells out” quickly. So get your
money and reservations in early to be sure to guarantee a place for you and your spouse, or guest,
at this annual event.
We are pleased to announce that for the first time, in many years, our Progressive Dinner will be
held exclusively in and around the city of Santa Barbara. Three of our members have graciously
volunteered to host various courses of this all-day eating and socializing event, at their lovely
homes. We have also reserved an entire restaurant so we can sit down and enjoy the main course
together. Cost is only $30.00 per person for the entire day of eating, driving, and socializing with
your fellow club members. A $10.00, per car, activity fee will be collected when we meet at Sears.
At the first member’s home we will be treated to a selection of hors d’oeuvres. At the second stop
we will be served salad. After salad, we will drive to a nearby restaurant for our entree. Here you
will have your choice of either: Mahi-Mahi - char-grilled and basted with huli-huli bbq sauce and
topped with fresh tropical salsa, Seafood Pasta - sautéed shrimp, scallops and fresh fish,
simmered in a creamy sun dried tomato sauce with artichokes, asparagus and linguine, served
with Parmesan cheese, Chicken Oscar - sautéed fresh chicken breast crowned with king crab,
asparagus, and béarnaise sauce, or Prime Rib - slow roasted in special ovens and served au jus.
All entrees will be accompanied by a starch and vegetable, coffee, tea, or soft drinks. Drinks from
the bar are extra. Upon completing the main course, we will drive over to our final member’s
home, overlooking Santa Barbara harbor and the Pacific Ocean. Here we will have dessert, watch
the sun disappear below the horizon, and enjoy more socializing and great camaraderie prior to
the ride home.
Due to the necessity of having to pay the restaurant in advance, as well as notifying those
volunteering their homes as to how many to prepare for, neither checks nor registrations received
after June 14, 2007 will be accepted.
