The power of camp is wild and
wonderful!
Each week of every summer, campers
of all ages experience the welcome of
hospitality, the security of belonging,
the love of Jesus in relationship, and the
wonder of God’s living creation. Camp
holds a recipe for bringing faith to life. It’s
my personal favorite foretaste of the feast
to come, a sneak peek of the Kingdom.
By Pastor Jess Daum
My own call to leadership in the Church
has grown by way of seeds planted in me
as an elementary school camper. Those
seeds began to sprout and grow in my
summers on camp staff. Now my call
continues to be watered whenever I return
to camp, whether I’m accompanying youth
in their LO experience or surrounded
by my own family soaking up a week of
Family Camp.
Pastors Jess and Trey Daum with their daughter at Outlaw Ranch camp.
In the set apart world of camp, the Holy
Spirit is unleashed in an unparalleled way to
do her work of calling, gathering, and enlightening people of faith who are sent out for the sake of the world. The numbers
tell the story: camp is one of the most cited reasons leaders in ministry name as responsible for their call to serve the
Church. But a story tells the story better. Andrea was going into eighth grade. She was a smart, kind young woman, and
it was at camp that she gained the courage to share with others that she was facing some giant struggles within herself.
At camp she experienced safety that allowed her to be honest about her brokenness. She heard the promise of Jesus,
spoken by a counselor who cared about her as a Child of God. She was surrounded by community, part of which would be
there when she went home. The power of camp can transform. Our camps are faith spaces where all who step foot are on
holy ground. They are catalysts of call, openings for honesty, and a beautiful sign of the Kingdom we proclaim. Thanks be
to God for camp!
2016 Bible Study Theme
Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your minds, so that you
may discern what is the will of God—what is good and acceptable and perfect.- Romans 12:2
How “IN THE WORLD” can God’s grace possibly be big enough for me or you or the people who are in the headlines?
How “IN THE WORLD” could strength come through weakness? How “IN THE WORLD” can I even begin to make a
difference in this messed up world? Here’s the deal - we may very well be IN the world, but we are not OF the world
- we are “In It, Not Of It.” What does that mean? Well, it means that, through the cross, God has turned everything
upside down. God brings light in darkness, fullness in emptiness, strength in weakness. Take everything the world
says, and flip it over.

“It has been so fun holding the LO Quilt Auction at Joy
Ranch during and after construction”, says Karen Kraus,
Development Director. “The auction drew many first-time
guests. But now buyers are telling us that they don’t have
room for many more quilts! We are hoping that by moving to
another community, we can raise new dollars for this great
cause we all believe
in - camping ministry!”
Please tell your friends and neighbors to join us
for this fun event!
West River Clink for Camp
Raises $14,870 for Outlaw Ranch
“What a wonderful event!”
“We learned so much about what is happening at Outlaw Ranch and
Lutherans Outdoors!”
“Don and Lisa Knudsen are the perfect hosts!”
Outlaw Ranch held its first-ever “Clink for Camp” fundraiser this past
September, hosted by Don and Lisa Knudsen at their beautiful home
in Rapid City. Guests enjoyed music provided by Rev. Jeff Rohr, heard
life-changing camp stories from Outlaw Ranch Director, Matt Rusch,
and - the surprise of the evening - heard via live video from Knudsen’s
son, Joshua.
Josh is in his last year at Wartburg Seminary. He shared his faith
journey, including the impact of working at Outlaw and Atlantic
Mountain Ranches which he described as instrumental in his decision
to become a pastor. It was a powerful tribute to the impact of Christian
camping!

Charitable IRA Rollover - Now
a Permanent Option
Thanks to the foresight of our Heritage Society members, earnings and growth from the
LO endowment provided $57,585 in 2015 to enhance and support the camping ministry of
Lutherans Outdoors in South Dakota! We are so grateful for this support!
By Providing Camperships
Earnings from the Lutherans Outdoors Endowment provided $15,717 in camperships to
children, families, and people with special needs, ensuring everyone who wants to come to
camp can come, even if they can’t afford the full fee.
“Thank you so much for healping me go to camp. I’ve been having a great week learning about
God’s love while having so much fun. I love the campfires at night. Thanks again!” - Jess
By Keeping Camp Fees as Low as Possible
The dollars provided by the LO Endowment help keep camp fees as low as possible for
campers and their families. This year the endowment provided $41,568 to Joy Ranch, Outlaw
Ranch, Klein Ranch, and NeSoDak.
Twenty-one year old Tasneem Rutloff finds JOY each time she visits Joy Ranch. Tasneem,
a cancer survivor who experiences seizures and ongoing short-term memory loss, awakens
each day, even when she is at Joy Ranch, asking, “Mom, which doctor do I go to today?”. Her
mom, Karie, says it is such a JOY to be able to tell her, ‘No doctors today, Tasneem, we just
get to have FUN!”. “I thank the Lord for opportunities like Joy Ranch”, says Karie. “Watching
Tasneem’s smiling face as she interacts with her camp counselor, hearing her laugh and
giggle, it’s just wonderful how much laughing she does at camp.” Tasneem plans to return
to Joy Ranch for the “Feel the Joy” Family Support 360 Conference in August, followed by
“Vacation Destination” in October and December. “I take lots of pictures which we look at
often”, explains Karie, “that way she gets so she remembers Joy Ranch and the activities she
did there.”
By Providing Seminary Scholarships
The LO Endowment has two funds, the David C. Brunkow Fund and the Courtney Walker Fund,
designated to provide seminary scholarships for LO staff. This year’s recipient is Teri Gayer,
who serves a dual role as Klein Ranch Director (part-time) and as pastor for the parishes in
Timber Lake and Isabel, South Dakota, while pursuing her seminary studies.
Charitable Giving through Individual Retirement Accounts
IRA Rollover Update: In 2015, Congress enacted a
permanent extension of the IRA charitable rollover. As a result,
individuals age 70½ or older can make gifts directly from their
IRA to charity in 2015, 2016 and beyond.
Are you age 70 ½ or older? Are you interested in making a gift
to your favorite charity, while reducing your tax burden? If so,
this information may benefit you!
The American Taxpayer Relief Act (ATRA) provides an
opportunity for IRA owners, age 70 ½ and older, to make a
charitable contribution up to $100,000 to a qualifying charity.
If you are considering a major gift - $1,000, $10,000, or any
amount up to $100,000 – an IRA Rollover gift may help you
achieve your goal of helping a favorite charity while serving
as a tax reduction strategy. The gift will help satisfy your
Required Minimum Distribution (RMD) for the year.
Your investment advisor or tax preparer can best advise you
to be certain the gift you are considering meets the standards
set by this law.
Please complete and return the coupon below for more
information – no cost, no obligation.

Teri says, “Thank you Lutherans Outdoors in SD for the Seminary Scholarship. I am
appreciative for the financial gift and the incredible support from the Board of Directors and
the year round staff on this new adventure! As difficult as it was to leave camping ministry full
time, I was thrilled to be able to continue with Lutherans Outdoors at Klein Ranch! I am loving
the new combination of congregational & camping ministry as well as learning to be a student
once again. I have been so blessed by Lutherans Outdoors in SD and the blessings continue.
Thanks, again for the amazing partnership in ministry!”

The Outlook
New Camp Directors are Cool Catches!
This has been a year of great “catches” for new staff being added to the Lutherans Outdoors family,
and 3 of the newest staff have one thing in common (in addition to being Lutheran and loving Camp!) –
they are all avid fishermen and lake lovers! Dusty Rodiek (Joy Ranch Director), Jake Hanson (NeSoDak
Director) and Paul Hanson (Director of Business and Operations) have brought many gifts to the table
as they have started their roles in ministry, and we are excited to get even more of a taste as they
continue in their positions. Northeast South Dakota is well known for their beautiful Glacial Lakes and
beautiful recreation areas. We know we will see more and more of the beauty of the region featured with
these leaders.

Joni and Friends works together with local churches and organizations,
forming outreach programs throughout the community and

individuals and families affected by disability with the love of Christ.
NeSoDak on the road!
This summer, NeSoDak is taking high school youth programs on the
road and all of the programs are full. After the success of the LO trip
to the Youth Gathering last summer, it is clear this is a need of the
congregations and youth we partner in ministry with and to. The “On
The Road” experiences include: High Adventures in the Rockies and the
Boundary Waters, Servant Journeys to Duluth, Kansas City and Denver.
They will even be taking trips for adults to the Boundary Waters. Spaces
are still available for the adult trips. Register today!

Outlaw Ranch to host Operation Purple Camp
this Summer
Outlaw Ranch
What’s Operation Purple Camp, and why is it PURPLE? “At OPC, we offer military kids
a FREE WEEK of camp where they connect with other kids, just like them. And purple
happens to be the perfect mix of Army green, Coast Guard blue, Air Force blue, Marine
Corps red, and Navy blue! In the military world, purple symbolizes all who serve, and
at our Association, we know families serve, too!
At Operation Purple Camp, being a military kid ROCKS and we celebrate by bringing
together kids from all ranks and services, including National Guard and Reserve
components. They bond through a unique and memorable “purple” summer camp
experience, which includes everything from kayaking and hiking to rock climbing, and
zip lining. The only thing better than that? S’MORES!”
Grandpa’s School Bus at Klein Ranch
Klein Ranch
Rich and Janice Jasmer, from Leola, SD have for the last couple summers and are
planning to again this summer, bring their team of Norwegian Fjord horses and
Grandpa’s School Bus to Klein Ranch.
Each week Rich and Janice trek out to Klein Ranch and hitch up the horses and take
each riding group out on the prairie. Besides slowing down and enjoying the rolling
plains by wagon, Rich and Janice also teach the campers, advisors and staff some of
the fundamentals of what it takes to drive a team of horses. Having the Jasmers and
their horses at Klein has been a great addition to the program, and we are looking
forward to having them back again this summer! (We will also be adding this
summer, a blacksmithing component to our summer program).

Vision Statement:
We are your first
choice for dynamic
and innovative Christcentered ministries:
many sites, many
seasons, many
experiences.
Letter from the Executive Director
Dear Friends in Christ,
February 1st brings the new fiscal year for your camps, and it is especially at this time that I am reminded of
the SIGNIFICANT impact in ministry made by you, the owner congregations of Lutherans Outdoors. Your gifts,
prayers, participation, and partnership in spreading the word ensure that we are able to live into our mission of
welcoming all to explore and experience Christ’s love in community and creation.
First, your partnership and generosity in 2015 allowed us to reach a 10-year high in summer camp and day
camp participation, serving 4,586 youth and adults in these programs. Many of these 4,586 campers were
able to have a camp experience because of the $93,000 made possible in camp scholarships. Holy cow!
Second, Capital Campaigning... I am VERY happy to share with you that through some amazing gifts
and pledges in 2015 we have met and exceeded the goal of our $3 million New Frontiers Campaign for
construction and start up costs at Joy Ranch!! Thanks be to God!! Once all campaign pledges have been
fulfilled, we will be able to move forward debt free at Joy Ranch.
This allows us to now focus on to the second part of that campaign, growth
in the endowment, to remove the next barrier to participation in this ministry Financial. To this end, the board has set endowment goal of $10 million, with
a reach goal of $20 million. One thing for sure, TODAY is the day to invest in
ensuring the future of your SD camps to grow leaders for the Church, empower
young people in faith, and strengthen families through Christian community in
God’s creation.
Third, this is not to say we are not without some hurdles. As we look to 2016
and beyond it is not too hard to see that to keep providing quality ministry
experiences, we will need to significantly grow our annual fund giving, reduce
expenses, and perhaps increase camp fees (currently camp fees only cover
about 1/3 the actual cost of camp). Annual gifts are vitally important in providing
scholarships, keeping fees as low as possible, and enabling site improvements.
Please know that the staff and board of your camps are working hard to address the ministry needs of the
people we are called to serve and to secure these Christ-centered experiences for years to come.
Through it all, lives are touched in the sharing of the Gospel, young leaders are trained for life in the church,
congregations are equipped and inspired for the work of ministry, and we get to be a part of God’s work in the
world.
THANK YOU to all of you who have been partners with us, and who have helped share the impact of this
ministry with so many! Together we look forward to what God will be doing through your camps in 2016!
Please, remember us in your prayers.
Sincerely,
Rev Layne D. Nelson

The Outlook
Letter from The President
WOW, what a year!
It was only last year when we kicked off our New
Frontiers campaign to retire our Joy Ranch debt.
Thank you to the incredible generosity of so many
who helped make this dream come true. Once we
receive all the pledges, we can close this phase of
the campaign. So after 11 years, the mortgage will be
paid off, and as Dave Ramsey would say “we are debt
FREE!”
This past year we added a Business Manager, Paul
Hanson, who has provided great support for Pastor
Layne and camp directors. Paul will continue to
provide leadership in the business end of Lutherans
Outdoors and will be a great asset to both board and
staff.
Also, as you can all imagine in running four camps, we
have a lot of projects and upkeep to continue keeping
our camps nice and running efficiently. So you ask
“What’s Next”?
First, we are developing plans to upgrade our kitchen
area at Klein Ranch. Secondly, we are developing
plans for new staff housing at NeSoDak, after adding
two new camper cabins. We would certainly also like
Speaking of master plans, after completing Outlaw’s
plan, we will now have new master plans for Outlaw,
Joy, and NeSoDak. This will provide a roadmap for
future planning and program development in a strategic,
orderly and efficient fashion. I am very proud that we will
have this to pass on to future leaders of this wonderful
organization.
I would like to also give a BIG THANK YOU to Karen
Kraus who will be retiring later this year. Karen has
been the face of our fundraising efforts and has been
instrumental in raising millions of dollars during her 14
years with LO. I’m not sure where we would be today
without Karen!
I wrote last year about the new focus and energy we are
placing in our Endowment Fund. There is no doubt that
our future success lies with endowment gifts. We cannot
charge campers the full cost, so the interest we receive
on an annual basis from endowment gifts is going to be
2015 Annual Meeting Minutes
May 30, 2015 •Calvary Lutheran Church • Rapid City SD
Outlaw Ranch Camp Director, Matt Rusch, and Outlaw Ranch staff welcomed the assembly by
singing two camp songs. Rev. Layne Nelson, Executive Director gave an opening prayer. Tom
Kelley, Board of Directors President, called the meeting to order at 9:35 AM.
Rev. Laura Overbo, Board of Directors Secretary, presented the minutes of the 2014 LO annual
meeting. Motion to approve the minutes as presented, motion seconded and passed.
Tom Kelley, presented the Treasurer’s report. The report included in the Outlook distributed at the
assembly includes figures of the 2014 fiscal year which runs Feb 1st through January 30th. 2014
was a strong year in gifts received, LO is very appreciative of this needed support. There was a
record summer in awarding camperships at $74,000.00. At this time, there is an anticipated budget
shortfall of approximately $133,000 for the fiscal year. It is the third summer Joy Ranch has had
guests, the operations are trending in the right direction with revenues & usage increasing. The
New Frontier Capital Campaign has kicked off in hopes of raising $3 million to retire the debt of
Joy Ranch. At this time, $1.3 million in pledges/donations have already been received. The LO
endowment fund is currently at $1.4 million which shows a long term commitment to the future of
LO. Motion to approve the treasurer’s report, motion seconded and passed.
Tom Kelley, President, gave a president’s report. Abundant appreciation and thanks was extended
to the many contributors to LO. There was a ten year high in summer camper numbers in 2014
with over 4,000 guests at LO camps. There have been over 18,000 visitors to LO camps this
past year. Land at Klein Ranch was sold which enabled the dollars from that sale to be used
towards long term debt retirement, increasing the endowment fund, and towards facility projects
at both NeSoDak and Klein Ranch. The old “hunting lodge” at NeSoDak will hopefully be a focus
in the next year to save that piece of 100 year history at the camp and make it more suitable for
additional staff housing.
There are two parcels of land at AMR that are still being evaluated. One parcel is in process of
a land trade with the forest service (with Outlaw Ranch), while the other parcel may be sold at
auction. Outlaw Ranch added decks to each cabin to create more opportunities for campers to
enjoy the beauty of Black Hills nature.
A newly formed LO Endowment Oversight Committee will meet regularly to add another layer
of deliberate focus on long term sustainability of LO outdoor ministry through endowment funds
and annual interest.
LO year round staff and summer staff were thanked and recognized for their strong commitment
and passion extended to all LO guests with such care and enthusiasm.
Rev Layne Nelson, Executive Director, gave a report. He thanked all who have been involved
in and shared what an honor it is to be a part of this powerful ministry that truly impacts lives.
Recognition was given to Teri Gayer on her 23 years with LO. She is transitioning to the TEEM
Program (Theological Education for Emerging Ministries) with the SD Synod and will continue as
Camp Director for Klein Ranch. On June 14, 2015 there will be a special worship service in Teri’s
honor at NeSoDak, all are invited. Jake Hanson will serve as the new NeSoDak Camp Director.
Outdoor ministry changes just as the church changes. LO served 4,091 just in the summer months
of 2014, serving others and sharing Christ’s love. Many of LO summer campers included families
from our congregations, children and adults with special needs, and families from the Banquet
and St. Francis House. There were 18,660 people at LO camps throughout the year visiting our
unique places to share in Christian community.
The bible study theme for 2015 is “No Matter What” based on Romans 8:39 that nothing will
separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus. Rev. Dr. Anna Madsen, LO directors and the
musicians of Tangled Blue worked collaboratively in creating a powerful and strong bible study
for all ages.
All congregations and leaders were thanked for their financial support and prayer support of LO
throughout the year, it is truly appreciated. All are invited to share in the rest, relaxation and
rejuvenation at any of the LO camps.
The Board of Directors and staff were introduced and thanked for their commitment to outdoor
ministry. Departing Board members, Howard Swenson and Jon Proehl, were thanked for their
many years of service and dedication to LO. New Board Members were welcomed: returning
Jan Ambler (Sheridan, WY) and Dennis Larson (Groton, SD).
The meeting was adjourned at 10:00 AM and closed with a prayer by Rev Laura Overbo. Assembly
break following the LO annual meeting was hosted by LO with homemade cookies and bars from
Outlaw Ranch.

critical to our future.
to save the Log Cabin, which turns 100 years old this
year. Next of course is Outlaw. We are developing a
new master site plan, along with building five miles of
hiking and biking trail. We also added archery to the list
of adventures at Outlaw this year.
Thanks again to all of
our annual contributors
and congregational
gifts. Your dollars are
being well invested.
The future of Lutherans
Outdoors and our future
pastoral recruiting
depends on your
donations and the
camper experience provided. Annual fund giving
makes this happen.
Finally, I would like to say thank you to Pastor Layne
and his wonderful staff and to the board for the
diligent passionate effort and support these last two
years that I have served as your board president. It
has been an honor and pleasure to serve you. An
experience I will always treasure!

LO Serves nearly 17,000 People in 2015
In 2015, the camps and year-round retreat centers of LOSD served 16,945 people
through summer programs and year-round retreats. This provides places and programs
that enrich the lives of all campers, staff and guests. We are a place of peace, learning,
extended family and a place where God is present in holy moments. It is our hope that
you find in your heart and mind the Lutherans Outdoors has a place for YOU!

thoughtfully met.

NeSoDak – Fishing Camp – June 19-24
Grab your fishing pole and tackle box and
join us for a week on Lake Enemy Swim. The
week will be spent learning new fishing skills
such as knot tying and casting along with
learning techniques for catching a variety of
species. When not on the water, you’ll spend
your time with your cabin mates participating
in Bible study, worship, paddle boarding, and
all camp games. Thursday night will
be a celebration including fishing prizes
and a fish fry.
Outlaw Ranch – Family Camp
Visual Artists Return
This will be the second summer at Outlaw
Ranch for adding visual artists in to the lineup
traditional resource-leaders and musical
artists-in-residence. From basket weaving
and potters to performance painters, your
senses will continue to be amazed during this
faith-filled family adventure.
