Easy Ways To Freshen Up Your Home

Some of us get bored easily. And this couldn’t be more true with
me – especially when it comes to my room décor. I can remember
staying up late, re-arranging furniture because I just needed a
change. While furniture placement is crucial to a positive flow
in your space, by simply adding small accessories and decorative
elements to any room, you can revitalize your space quickly and
easily. Here, FW narrows down what to invest in.
Window Treatment:
Whether it is blinds, rattan shades, or
floor-to-ceiling curtains, adding, removing or
changing your window dressings make a world
of difference. They dictate the amount of natural
light you let into your room, and depending
on your choice, can make your ceilings seems
higher than they really are. While shades have
become a popular choice for those seeking the
minimalist look, curtains in a variety of textures
remain the go-to solution your windows. They
give a dramatic flair to your room and also
provide adequate privacy from the outside
world. Experiment with different types of fabric,
whether light and diaphanous or thick and heavy.
Fun With Fabric:
Choosing a colour palette for your room is
difficult enough as it is- and having to choose
6 •
FASHION WEEKLY
fabric proves to be even more so. While visual
appeal is paramount, one must also consider
another important element – “touchability.” If a
fabric is not comfortable to the touch, you or your
visitors most definitely will not favour it. Also,
remember to choose those that are durable and
can withstand whatever your children, pets or
unruly visitors throw at it.
Lighten Up:
While many focus on paint colours and
accessories, one element to a room is often
overlooked – lighting. This is due to the fact that
many approach lighting as a functional aspect and
not an aesthetic one. Choosing the right light
fixtures can highlight the room’s strong points
and affectively mask the negative aspects.
Invest in new lighting fixtures and categorically
place them in different spots. You will see that

of www.bp0.blogger.com
simply moving a floor lamp from
one corner to another brings out a
different effect and therefore, switches
up the look of your room.
The Little Extras:
Throwing in a few little extras
into your space can add a sense of
vibrancy and creative a whole new
energy to your room. Consider
large throw pillows as seating, area
rugs and pieces of art to make a
true statement. They add your
own personality into your
room and really complete
your transformation! FW

Neighbourhood Watch:
Roncesvalles
By: Lora Maghanoy, FW Editor
Nestled in the west-end of the city, Roncesvalles has garnered
a reputation for being home to independent shops and antique
hotspots. But like many Toronto neighbourhoods (and perhaps
credited to the increasing popularity and gentrification of nearby
Parkdale), the seemingly quiet region has had a surge in visitors
and has longtime Torontonian’s newfound respect.
High Park
West of Roncesvalles
Considered the gem of Toronto parks,
High Park is the largest park in Toronto,
spanning 398 acres. The park is home
to recreational and sporting facilities,
gardens, playgrounds and a zoo. It also
boasts live theatre in the summer time
with their annual, “Dream in High
Park,” where a production of a popular
Shakespearean play is put on. Those
looking for a bite to eat are in luck- the
Grenadier Café is a large restaurant with
a massive outdoor patio to let you enjoy
your beautiful surroundings.

Roncesvalles Bakery
& Deli
173 Roncesvalles Ave.
Everyone loves a bakery. nd this
bakery in the west end is one of the best.
Considered the best place for Eastern
European delicacies, they provide fresh
dishes to eat-in or take-out, including
cabbage rolls, stuffed peppers, patichki,
kopytka, pyze, potato pancakes, blintzes
(nalishniki), European style hamburgers and
chicken. For those with a sweet tooth, look
no further, as they also carry a number of
pastries, cakes and various sweets.
Gate 403
403 Roncesvalles Ave.
Part restaurant and part bar, Gate
403 has become a popular spot for those
looking for good food (bar menu includes
burgers, pasta and steak dishes) and a
cool spot to spend your evening. An
added bonus is that on some night the
spot has seemingly become a perfect
venue for an intimate jazz show (they
often feature local musicians) and on
other nights resembles a chill piano bar.
Definitely worth a visit.

Polish Festival
During the festival, the street is
closed to vehicles, making way for
pedestrians to enjoy the sites, sounds and
taste of Poland. Tens of thousands of
Torontonians and tourists visit the event,
making it a popular festival in our city.

Behind the Wheel
Classic Couture on Wheels
By: Amanda Bloye, FW Writer
Like any fashionista, I can appreciate a great vintage find when
I see it. Whether it’s a classic Louis Vuitton or a great pair of
rare Manolo’s, an epoch piece is always in style. Fortunately,
for car lovers everywhere, the thrill of vintage translates
into the automobile industry. From the 1920’s to the 1980’s,
Fashion Weekly has compiled the rare auto antiques that
graced the roads throughout each decade.
1923 Ford Model T
One of the first affordable autos ever released
by the Ford Motor Company, the Model T was
produced from 1908 to 1927. The car had a
front mounted 2.9L four-cylinder en bloc motor
and ran on either gasoline or ethanol. The
Model T’s claim to fame is that it was the first
automobile mass produced on assembly lines with
interchangeable parts, therefore revolutionizing the
industry.
1931 Ford Model A Street Rod
The successor of the Ford Model T, the Model
A ranged in price from US$385 for a roadster
to $1400 for the Town Car. Coming in a wide
variety of colours and styles, the Model A was
the first to use standard driving controls. This
included the standard clutch and brake as we
see them today. The Model A has appeared in
numerous forms of media including the 2005
remake of King Kong.

1947 Caddy
In the world of automobiles, fewer brands
evoke a sense of luxury than that of Cadillac. The
1947 Cadillacs were distinguishable from previous
models by the Cadillac name on the front fenders
and a new emblem design, according to www.
welovecadillacs.com. Production for the 1947
model “reached 61, 926 units [which was] more
than double” the number produced in 1946.
1955 Chevrolet Bel Air
The 1955 Chevrolet Bel Air is one of the most
recognizable cars of all time, whether it was in
television, film or the memories of those who were
able to see it brand new. Chevrolet produced the
Bel Air series from 1953 to 1975. In 1955 the
series’ gained the power of a V8 engine, which
remained in production for many decades to
follow.

1967 Shelby GT 500 Mustang
The 1967 Shelby GT 500 is one of the
most recognizable cars in mainstream society.
Thanks to the hit film Gone in 60 Seconds, the
Shelby was nicknamed Eleanor and made auto
enthusiasts everywhere drool. Known for its high
performance, the GT 500 was equipped with the
options of a four-speed manual transmission, air
conditioning and power steering, according to
musclecars.howstuffworks.com.
1975 Ford Torino
Best known as the getaway vehicle on the
hit television show Starsky and Hutch, the Ford
Torino was known as conventional and was widely
popular in 4-door sedan and 4-door hardtop
models. Also known for its high performance
capabilities, the Torino is known in history as a
highly successful racer.
1947
1985 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am
No 1980s tribute is complete without the
inclusion of the Pontiac Trans Am. The Firebird
Trans Am, featured in Smokey and the Bandit,
was reinvented in 2007 by Burt Reynolds as a
tribute to the 30th anniversary of the film. The
Trans Am was a specialty package introduced for
the Firebird, which offered upgrades for handling,
suspension, horsepower, hoods, spoilers, fog lights
and wheels. FW

Tips to Keep Your Vehicle

Q: “Where did you purchase your Jacket?”
A: “I got my jacket and my shirt as well from just a little store in
Italy actually.”
Q:” Do you consider yourself stylish?”
A: “ Not really, I don’t really think about that type of thing.”
Q: “How do you feel about fashion and people spending
thousands of dollars on a few items of clothing?”
A: “I just don’t get it! I mean, I do enjoy fashion, and a nice suit
or shirt and tie once and a while but if I were given $3000
to spend, I’d buy something that could last at least 5 to 10 years
like a TV or camera, but a suit could go out of style within the
next few months or so.”
With the winter season fast approaching, there is no time like
the present to ensure that your vehicle is in full working order.
The cold affects every part of the car from the engine, to the
brakes, to the windows, wipers and locks. As a result, car
maintenance is an essential, occasionally overlooked, aspect
of automobile ownership. Here are a few tips to keeping your
vehicle looking and running at its best.
Find your auto soul mate. The first thing
individuals should consider when looking
at car maintenance is a good mechanic. By
finding a mechanic you interact easily with, you
eliminate the possibility of shady behaviour and
unexplained fees. By developing a relationship
with your mechanic you ensure that your vehicle
receives the best treatment possible for years to
come.
Cleanliness is key. By washing your vehicle
weekly you avoid corrosion and damage to paint.
Plus, you take a shower daily to look and feel
your best so why shouldn’t your auto get to “feel”
the same.
Change the oil. If you take nothing else from

this article please listen to this advice. Staying on
top of oil changed is crucial for a well-maintained
car. Although most mechanics will place a sticker
in your windshield reminding you of when to
change, a good rule of thumb to go by is no more
than 5000 km.
Check the tire pressure. No sound annoys
and petrifies drivers more than that of a tire
popping and, Murphy’s Law, if it’s gonna happen
it’ll be when it’s pouring rain and you’re on the
highway. To avoid this moment of confusion and
humiliation, check your tire pressure regularly.
A good pattern to get into would be to check the
tires, using the gage on the air pump, every time
you get gas. FW

Q:” Where do you work?”
A: “ At Southam Publishing, I’m an editor.”
Q: “So do you dress the way you do because of where you work or because you want to?”
A: “ Well both, my mother always had a good sense of style and I so I guess I just
learned to dress like this from her so I want to but I also dress like this because of
where I work.”
Q: “ Where did you get your suit from?”
A: This suit is around a $600 suit but, I actually got it from a little store in Don Mills.”

Toronto’s Nuit Blanche
Explore True Happiness
By: Eva Bowering, FW Writer
Nuit Blanche had an overwhelming amount
of success this year, for better or for worse.
Despite the turn out being so large, and it
becoming gradually more and more difficult to
get around to view each exhibit. And whether we
like it or not, Nuit Blanche continues to grow and
flourish each and every year. Though visual art
seems to be the primary focus at Nuit Blanche,
fashion itself is beginning to gradually make it’s
way into the Nuit Blanche landscape.
This year Ryerson University held a very
large fashion show with its “Light Up The
Night” campaign. The show called Dislocation
was an interactive fashion conglomeration that
incorporated the audience a long side the use
of video imagery. Three separate fashion shows
took place through out the evening in the Zone A
location at 297 Victoria St.

Another fashion oriented exhibit at Nuit
Blanche was at Wrong Bar (1279 Queen St. W)
called Art of Fashion: Between the Lines where
ten participants portrayed their collections and
the audience was asked to vote for their favourite.
Vying for the title of Best Exhibit, designers had
to express their collections via performance art,
live models, and with the use of props.
Another Parkdale presentation for Nuit
Blanche was at Shopgirls Gallery Boutique (1342
Queen Street West.). The shop sells a variety of
one of a kind, hand made designer works from
local artists. They featured the amazing fashion
illustrator and artist Frederick Watson. Some of
his paintings are being housed at the store until
the 31st of October, which should not be missed!
Frederick’s work may also be purchased from the
boutique until the end of the month. FW

Hottest

Runway
Looks...
With a chill in the air and leaves on the
ground it’s difficult to imagine a world where
sun, flirty dresses and knee-grazing skirts
reign supreme. Luckily, Fashion Weekly has
brought together four looks from the best of
the Spring 2009 runway to keep you warm all
winter long.

Girlie Glam
Futurist Females
Badgley Mischka’s models exuded
confidence in looks tailor-made to keep the
focus on fashion. Brows were the statement
feature and were kept bold, thick and well
groomed, with little to no makeup present.
Cheeks were slightly bronzed and lips remained
neutral toned and nearly nude. All models’ hair
was away from the face and pulled tightly back
into either a side-parted ponytail or updo.
Girlie Glam
Evident in the spring collections of Diane
Von Furstenberg and Leifsdottir was a return to
feminine innocence. Diane Von Furstenberg’s
models were the essence of bohemian chic as they
walked down the runway. Hair was kept long
and flowing with a natural wave and accented by
stunning hairpieces. The models’ makeup was kept
fresh faced and natural. Eyes were the en vogue
feature, as each model wore their version of the
smoky eye paired with natural cheeks and lips.
Leifsdottir chose to play up feminine fun
with bouncy curls and daring lips. Hair was kept
high volume and big curl, with looks ranging from
free flowing to tamed updo. Models appeared
almost doll-like with bright blushes and bold red
lips as the statement feature. Eye makeup was
minimal and kept to liner, mascara and some silver
or white shadow.
Classic Confidence
The collections of Andy & Debb and
Badgley Mischka saw a return to a classic,
confident female. Andy & Debb’s models were
reminiscent of old Hollywood and kept pale
faced with a focus on bright red lips. Almost no
eye makeup was evident with minimal liner and
mascara being used. Hair was kept swept to
one side and left long and flowing with a slight
natural curl.

Independent Beauty
The models of Tony Cohen and Zac
Posen adhered to a look of natural beauty while
appearing to strut to the beat of their own
drum. Tony Cohen’s motto for hair appeared
to be “go big or go home”. Models’ hair was
curled and teased appearing to push the limits
of the standard views of hair volume. As for
makeup, eyebrows were kept dark, thick and
natural. All other makeup was kept nude or
non-existent.
Zac Posen followed suit giving models
thick, high-reaching pompadour hairstyles. All
hair was kept half up (into the pompadour) and
half down, with the down part kept straight
and long. Makeup was again, kept minimal
with natural eyes and cheeks paired with
statement brows and lips.
Futuristic Females
With the year of 2008 long behind
them, Jill Stuart and Sabyasachi chose to keep
their looks focused on the future of fashion.
Jill Stuart’s models donned daring silver and
lilac shadows, rosy cheeks and shimmering
lips. Hair was kept pulled back into loose
updos with pieces around the front and crown
strategically falling out.
Sabyasachi chose to focus on the look
of futuristic librarian with models sporting
thick glasses, tightly wound buns and natural
makeup. Eyebrows were thick and dark while
lips made a statement and were kept matte,
deep and dark. FW

Fresh Food:
Toronto’s Hot New Restaurants
By: Lora Maghanoy, FW Editor
Toronto is a city that loves its food. With new restaurants
opening everyday, it’s hard keeping track of where to treat our
palate. Here’s a list of FW’s more recent faves.
Nota Bene (180 Queen Street West)
Intended to be casual and laid-back, the
restaurant’s menu offers an eclectic spread that no
doubt sets itself apart from the other restaurant
popping up on the Queen West map. Dinner for
two can range for $150, but rest assured, you
absolutely will get your money’s worth.
Grace (503 College St.)
If you’re in the mood for home-style cooking,
comfort food at it’s best, Grace will surely not
disappoint. Nestled in Little Italy (a hotbed
for hip and trendy restaurants), the restaurant
resembles any common modern eatery, but
infuses LA (as in Los Angeles) elements. Relaxed
and has delicious food – really, what more can
you ask for?
Gilead Café (4 Gilead Place)
Adding to the increasingly cool King East
area, Gilead Café has opened its doors and is
another member of the Jamie Kennedy Kitchens
group. Everything is homemade and the kitchen
only uses seasonal produce. The café, set up like
a cafeteria, is furnished with a huge communal
table and additional intimate dining spaces.
Lucien (36 Wellington Ave. East)
The restaurant is as unassuming as its
clientele, attracting the likes of older businessmen
to the young hipsters. The menu features familiar
items, such as lamb, steak, chicken, beef and
salmon, but uses these ingredients in new ways.
On top of that, the atmosphere is welcoming and
warm.
Cowbell (1564 Queen Street West)
If fresh and simple food is what you like, then
Cowbell is the spot for you. There’s something
incredibly endearing about a restaurant that
features its kitchen’s menu on a chalkboard,
handwritten by its staff. It changes almost
daily, entirely dependent on what is currently
in season and fresh. The restaurant exclusively
uses organic cuts of meat, which are produced
by local farmers. FW

Screaming deals for a
Halloween Getaway
By: Amanda Bloye, FW Writer
With the most frightening of holidays around the corner, the
only thing scarier is being stuck here in the cold or paying full
price for a mediocre getaway. Yes, there is no better time than
the present to plan your escape for a fall vacation.
Haunting Finds
Across the US are destinations not for the
faint of heart. For the thrill seeker in all of us,
there are haunted destinations at eerily low
prices. For example, in New Orleans at the Hotel
Monteleone, guests have reported ghost sightings
and chills while walking through the halls at
night. For $565 guests are treated to the Haunted
Weekend package, which includes two nights
deluxe adult accommodation, meals, cocktails
and a murder mystery. For more information visit
www.hotelmonteleone.com/haunted08.htm.
Another great stop sure to scare is Salem,
Massachusetts. Home of the executions of the
1692 Salem witch trials, the town is teeming with
spirits and eerie vibes. Come Halloween, Salem
plays host to haunted house tours, pumpkin
festivals and movie screenings. For more
information on events, history and lodging visit

Last Minute Luxury
Some of the most alluring of vacations lie in
the heart of the Caribbean. Offering up a platter
of sun, sand and fun, all-inclusive trips are the
quintessential go-to travel destination. Although
October is one of the most expensive times to
travel south, if you are patient enough to wait
for a last minute deal you won’t be disappointed.
First, pick your range of days that you want to
leave. Then, with flexibility in mind, keep your
eyes on the travel section in your local paper and
online travel sites. When considering last minute
travel, the best time to book is one to two weeks
before you plan to leave. Any closer and you run
the risk of limited options and an increased price.
Great sites to check out are www.selloffvacations.
com, www.expedia.ca, www.travelzoo.com and
www.itravel2000.com. Another option is to
search “travel deals” in Google or Yahoo and

hotel features 230 elegant guestrooms and 64
luxurious suites with original works of art
and antiques. It is located near the business
and fashion districts of Toronto. The Sutton
Place also offers apartment living, just in case
you do find yourself entirely incapable of
leaving this place.
The Windsor Arms Hotel is a classic pick
for celebrities, which is notorious for catering to
Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton during their
hay day, as well as Britney Spears, and a variety
of other celebs. The hotel was built in 1883 and
was originally known as “The Grand Hotel”.
The hotel offers 28 newly appointed luxury suites
with 24-hour butler service. As well as a spa that
offers fully serviced individual treatment rooms,
swimming pool and exercise facilities.
Soho Grand Hotel, Park Hyatt, and
Fairmont Royal York are also a variety of hotels
that are legendary for their star treatment.
Despite the high price range, each of these
hotels is a sure fire way to scope out celeb
sightings whether or not you do decide to stay
the night. No matter what, each hotel has it’s
own unique crowd and comfort that is sure to
pamper any prince or princess. FW

Lets face it- your weekly fitness regimen
can get pretty bland after a while. Half an hour
of cardio on the treadmill, followed by reps of
weights and sit-ups isn’t always the most exciting
thing to look forward to. Aradia Fitness helps
women to put some spice into their workouts by
offering classes that include pole dancing, lap
dancing, and steamy mat sessions that
are sure to get your heart pumping.
Shannon Crane, who also teaches
most of the classes, operates Aradia’s
Toronto studios. She started her
career by taking a class and loved it
so much that 6 months later she had
her Aradia’s owner certification and
opened her first studio in July of 2006.
The studio that I visited is located
in Queen West (721 Queen St. West)
and is the larger of the two in the
Toronto area (The other is at 115
Danforth Ave). I wasn’t quite sure what to expect
from my teaser class, and certainly was pleased
to see how much of a work out these sessions
actually provide- be warned, you will feel it the
next day.
The class was an intimate size of 8, which
is usually the case as Aradia boasts a high level

of customer intimacy. If the class exceeds the
number of poles, it is split in two sections and
another instructor will be present to make sure
that everyone gets the attention they need. Also
notable is that these classes are filled with women
of all different ages, shapes, and sizes. The studio
is a great environment that welcomes anyone who
is willing to give it a try.
The class started with a sexy warm
up and was followed by some mat
work focusing on arms and strength.
Afterwards, it was to the poles. My
first attempt at the “fireman” spin
was mortifying to say the least, but
Shannon made sure to work with me
until I got the swing of it. We ended
the class with a routine made up of all
the moves we had learned throughout
the class.
I have to say, my session at Aradia
was the most fun workout I’ve ever had and I
would definitely consider rounding up a group of
my girlfriends and heading over. If you are feeling
a little saucy, you can take a teaser class for $25,
and if you like it there are a number of options
available. The standard one includes 4 week
pole dancing & sensual movement classes (level

Montreal Fashion Week once again
collaborated with P&G Beauty for the
7th time in a row and put on a fantastic
spectacle of Canadian design. Even
though well known names such as Denis
Gagnon, Evan Biddell and Andy-The Anh
feature their collections on the Toronto
runways, there is no doubt a surge on the
new and emerging Montreal-based talent.
With buyers and the public streaming
the shows, Montreal Fashion Week is a
landmark of the Canadian fashion map.
With a contrast and some repeats to that
of L’Oreal Fashion Week held in Toronto,
the MFW offers something more cultural
and with a sense of European flare.
The MFW also be collaborated
with the WHO’S NEXT fashion trade
show for the second time, showcasing
Canadian French designers latest

for take home food if you’re in a rush and another
section dedicated to books and products to help
you make your way into this lifestyle. Attached to
the restaurant is a recently opened breakfast bar,
so you can begin your healthy day at 7am!
Next at your disposal is a hot and cold buffet.
By buffet, I do not mean lining up and piling
on sky-high mounds of food like it’s your last
meal. If you’re eating at Commensal, you pay

During this time when the world’s economy
is chaotic and prices are rocketing, becoming ecofriendly is a part of the new, affordable way of
living. Savings are crucial, so why limit yourself to
just the environment? FW has learned today that
eating vegetarian can be easy on your body and
your wallet.
Ironically placed right opposite the
Barbarian’s Steak House, Commensal is not
outshined by its neighbors on Elm Street. Having
passed this restaurant several times in the past, I
have thought to myself “this is just not for me.”
I was pleasantly surprised to find out that eighty
percent of their clientele are not vegetarian.
Owner Susanna Yeung says it best “ it’s just a
sensible way to eat.” Her goal is to break this
common mindset, and show people how to
improve their lifestyle by eating vegetarian.
Commensal has a light, sunny disposition

weight; this way, you look after yourself, your
money, and not waste food at the same time. If I
had to recommend one dish, it would be the rich,
coconut flavored Thai Seiten Curry, featured in
the hot buffet.
Avoiding dessert is the hardest thing to do. At
Commensal, this is no way to live! The Soya cake
particularly impressed me, unable to believe it
was actually that with every bite I took. If you’re
feeling festive, grab a soft and spicy Pumpkin
Orange Square to accompany your tea. This
little number pretty much pushed my friend, the
‘Borderline Vegetarian,’ over to the green side.
Adding to the atmosphere, every Friday and
Saturday Commensal treats you to a live Jazz
performance. A perfect combination with my
meal was the musical styling of the talented duo,
Sarah Jerrom and Ali Berkok.
I can assure you I was very full by the end
of the meal, and not the kind of full where you
feel like your next stop should be the YMCA
nearby. It was a refreshing feeling that came from
eating clean, healthy food. I have to admit, I was
converted as I left the restaurant, and I think you
will be too. Try out something new, and we at FW
promise you a new way of living! FW
