Program - Macomb Community College

Hello and Welcome to Macomb Community College!
What an incredible time to be a Macomb Community College Monarch!
Macomb offers a well-rounded athletic program that benefits both students and the community
it serves. We’re a proud member of the National Junior College Athletic Association, Region XII,
as well as the Michigan Community College Athletic Association, where competition includes
cross country, basketball, baseball, softball and volleyball.
With another academic year concluded, it’s time to celebrate our on-the-field and off-the-field
success. Our men’s cross country team placed third at regionals and produced four national
qualifiers, while our women’s cross country team finished fourth at regionals and totaled seven
national qualifiers. The men also set school records in the Indoor DMR and Outdoor 3200
relay. Our women’s and men’s basketball teams placed third and fourth, respectively, in the
conference, and both reached the district tournament finals. Our softball team finished fourth
in the conference and qualified for the district tournament, while our baseball team ended the
season with wins in seven of its last eight games. Our volleyball team had four players receive end-of-year honors in the
conference.
Through the years, hundreds of our athletes have earned All-American honors and several hundred more have been
honored by the NJCAA, Region XII and MCCAA.
But there’s much more.
Student athletes at Macomb realize it’s a privilege and a responsibility to participate in our athletic program. This responsibility
places the student athlete in a year-round model citizenship role, where behavior and character count. We expect our
student athletes to hold themselves to higher standards and to serve as leaders amongst their peers. For the second year in
a row, we had three students achieve Scholar Athlete of the Year status (4.0 GPA). This is also the 19th consecutive season
in which our student-athletes have held a higher GPA than the average Macomb student.
We have a continuing commitment to excellence from our administration, our coaches, our support staff and, most
importantly, our student athletes. We promote self-respect, as well as respect for others and for the diversity of all people.
Discipline, teamwork, leadership, loyalty, cooperation and mutual respect are just a few of the character traits we instill at
all times which helps prepare our student-athletes to succeed in life. That’s far more important than wins or losses. Some of
the names and faces may change, but our commitment to inspire champions on and off the field today so they’re prepared
to become leaders for tomorrow never will.
An integral part of our future is to create and maintain ongoing relationships with all of our alumni as they will always be part
of the Macomb Monarch family. We’d like to invite you to come watch us compete. We promise you that we will make you
proud.
Go Monarchs!

Boot Camp
First-year coach Irick Gardner had a vision when
he chose to take his Monarchs to the sandy
beaches on the west side of the state.
And it paid off.
The team went through two-and-a-half days of
intense training on land and in water to better
prepare them for the 2016 season.
This was not a vacation.
The team climbed sand dunes carrying a weight,
ran numerous times along the beach and got a
great cardio workout in the lake.
But the most important part of the trip was the
team bonding as they tackled every obstacle
together, encouraging each other along the way.
There’s no doubt this will help the Monarchs
have a very successful 2016 season.

About Macomb Community College
Macomb Community College ranks in the top two percent nationally
for the number of associate degrees awarded and is accredited by
the Higher Learning Commission, as well as several program-specific
accreditation organizations. Its offerings include university transfer, early
college, professional certification, workforce development, continuing
education and enrichment, and, through its nationally acclaimed
University Center that opened in 1991, bachelor degree completion and
graduate level programs. Growing steadily from the first 84 students that
showed up for class on Sept. 16, 1954, Macomb Community College now
serves approximately 48,000 annually.
The athletic program is part of a vibrant campus life that complements
nearly 200 degree and certificate programs, including many in high tech
and high demand fields. As a community college funded, in part, by
local tax revenue and state appropriations, Macomb is able to maintain
a tuition rate that is considerably lower than that of four-year colleges or
universities, amounting to a savings of approximately $18,000 for transfer
students taking their first two years of a four-year (bachelor’s) degree
program at Macomb. .
