HARLEY OWNERS GROUP MOTORCYCLE CLUB
July 4th Parade...from Bob Daniels
Friday morning July 4th, we will represent the chapter
in both the Norwood and Glenolden parades. We will
leave from McDonalds at the Granite Run Mall at 8:00
AM sharp for a quick ride to the Interboro High
School on Amosland Avenue. Those that may live
nearby the school can meet us there. The Norwood
Parade starts at 8:30. From there, we will stage as a
group for the Glenolden Parade. For those that may
have afternoon plans for the fourth, the parade ends
around noon.
Hope to see a great turnout as we did in the past.

From the Editor...
The heat is on and the riding season is in full swing. As we
head into the dog days of summer, please be aware of the
risks associated with hot weather riding and make sure you
stay hydrated. Our Head Road Captain, Charlie Dresden,
has been busy setting up cool rides for the club after
polishing his skills in the ProRider course - he did so well
that they presented him with the "Best Civilian Rider" award
(see photo inside). Since riding season is in full swing with
loads of fun things to do so check out the Harley
Happenings list and this month's Member Spotlight features
John Burke.
I tried some cool products from NoWet Greenway and was
so impressed that I have obtained some for our July
meeting if you take a few minutes to read up on the
products in order to be able to answer the contest
questions.
I hope to see everyone on Thursday for the 4th of July
Parade - it is always a nice event and it really does have a
wonderful community feel.

Please join me in extending a hearty Tri-State HOG
welcome to our new member who joined our ranks in

Did you ever wonder how bikers get their names? Names
like Animal, Snake, Spider, Joker, Smokey, and Tiny just to
name a few. They say a good nick name can't be rushed,
but will come due to a character trait or a situation whereas
your friends start calling you by a name not found on your
birth certificate. How do you get your new name to stick?
Pick a short name, one or two syllables. Your name has to
roll off the tongue. Introduce yourself using your new road
name so people have no choice but to call you by your road
name. The best names come with a story. Unless a rider
that's new to your
group joined with a road name, there
probably hasn't been enough time to
give them a good name. Take the
situation where someone knocked over
a row of bikes, their name became
Domino. A name for a big guy could be
Moose, Bear, or ironically Tiny. Cut a car
in half with a hacksaw, your name might
be Hacksaw? Do you remember the former football player
and professional wrestler named Hacksaw Jim Duggan?
While writing this article I tried to find evidence that Jim
Duggan actually cut a car in half with a hacksaw. I couldn't
find any evidence of this but whether or not it's true, the
story is so good the name stuck. What's your road name
and how did you get it?

Hello new members!
Welcome to Tri-State HOG!! We're excited to meet you
and welcome you into the Harley Owner's Group. It's my
sincere hope that you'll enjoy many years with us. TSH
brings members together for the common interest of
promoting safe & responsible motorcycling and activities in
a family oriented and non-political atmosphere…and to just
have fun and ride!
All meetings are held at Hennessy's Restaurant, 3050
Pennell Road. Aston, PA. The Officers meetings are held
on the second Wednesday of the month at 7 PM (All
members are welcome to attend). The general
membership meetings are held on the second Wednesday
of the month at 8 PM. Meetings run for about 2 hours. It's
a good opportunity to get out with fun people and learn
firsthand what's going on in the Chapter.
To become a TSH member, we'll record your pertinent
information and collect your dues for the year, but there's
one more thing. All TSH members fill out an application
each year. Whether you're a new member or a returning
member, your application is a waiver covering you for all
Chapter events during the year. We'll have applications at
the General Meetings or I'll have applications with me in my
saddle bags from this point forward. If you have any
questions regarding membership or upcoming rides and
social events, feel free to contact any of the officers on our

Giving Back...
The Loaves & Fishes Food Pantry is a nondenominational, non-sectarian food bank that supplies
food to those in need in our area, and is staffed
completely by volunteers.
In an effort to help our goals to provide non perishable
food items to this local food pantry, the club will
provide an extra 50/50 ticket to everyone that brings
an item to our general meeting. When you sign in,
please present your item or items to Leo and he will
give you one extra ticket.

The "Wolf Pack 5" conquered "The Snake" of North
Carolina and Tennessee on 6/23 and managed to slay the
"Tail of the Dragon" the next day!

my driveway and
asked about the

Welcome Back ERA9
On July 27th Joe D'Adamo (Rhythm Guitar)
(cousin of Tri-State HOG Member, Holly Bailey)
along with his band mates from the Montreal based
rock band ERA9: Philip Paolino (Vocals), Jona
DhePaganon (Lead Guitar),
Marco Leclerc (Drums) and Anthony Lalla (Bass) will
be back in town rocking
The Legendary Dobbs in Philadelphia.
Following the successful launch of their self-titled debut
EP, "ERA9", the band went on to tour throughout
Canada and win the Sirius XM’S Rock the Grey
Cup award before producing another winning EP
"Turn Day" which came out in 2013. In between
working hard producing some amazing new music for
their ever-growing base of loyal fans, they are back on
tour and have a grueling schedule ahead of them this
summer so if your travels take you to some of the cities

MEMBERS SPOTLIGHT
Tri-State HOG is a great organization because of its members and one of the things I noticed as I started
talking to
different members each month at the meetings or activities is that we have some really
fascinating people with
interesting talents, careers & hobbies. Some members who are bit more shy than me
(insert hysterical laughter here) have asked about adding a column to help them get to know the other members better so
hopefully our members will enjoy this column and help me out by ensuring a ready supply of submissions for each bi-monthly
newsletter.
John Burke has been a member of Tri-State HOG for the past 2 years and is currently located in Newtown Square, PA.
He rides an Ultra Classic and has been riding for about 40 years after starting on an old mini bike when he was 12. John's
favorite thing about riding
is the "peace and freedom."
John has been a familiar face at many of our events but he especially enjoyed the clam home in Northeast (? not sure if I read
that right) and the Ride for History since it was his first time leading a group and he was proud to do a good job.
When he's not out riding his Harley, John is busy making sales for Tri-State Technical (industrial valves, gauges, heat tracing
(? again not sure if I read that right - with his handwriting, you'd think he's a doctor LOL!)
John has been married to his college sweetheart for 30 years and they have one son who is an engineer. He enjoyed
watching "Every Day is a Holiday, Every Meal is a Feast" He was a Boy Scout leader for many years and said "one of the
richest rewards I've known was to help boys become good men."
If you have not met John, please catch up with him at an upcoming meeting to say "hello." It seems that John is somewhat
elusive when it comes to photos but he is in the picture below so in the spirit of Where's Waldo, I'll let you see if you can find
John in the photo.

Great Tire Gauge Find...by David Linahan
After I purchased my new 2014 Ultra Limited, I tried to check the air pressure in the tires and discovered both of
my tire gauges wouldn’t work. So, off I go to two auto supply stores and no luck. Then I began my internet
search, after a long while I found this little tire gauge by “Keiti” www.keiti.com some Taiwan company.
The tire gauge is small enough to fit on my key FOB. I took it part like every engineer
would do and the batteries are two little button ear phone type. Check with Ed
Montgomery, he knows where to buy cheap batteries. To the right is a picture of the
gauge on my key FOB for scale. Below is picture from their website.

Did You Know?

The History of the Biker Bell?
There are lots of stories about road gremlins and the
protective provided by "ride bells" and the legend that
buying one will protect you but receiving one as a gift
doubles the protection which is why traditionally motorcycle
riders have given each other bells as a symbol of friendship
and respect. But as I was researching this fascinating little
magical talisman, I found this interesting theory and thought
I would pass it along for your consideration.
Origin of Biker Bells
The true origin of the biker bell may have ties to the Sturgis
Motorcycle Rally.
In the 1930’s the Jackpine Gypsies Motorcycle Club was
formed in the Black Hills of South Dakota. The rally started
as a half-mile dirt-track race, with a few racers and small
group of about 200 onlookers.
It is said that a bell was given to entrants to pin on their
shirt as a token of entry—much like a button or wrist band
might be given today.
Commemorative Bell
One traditional application of motorcycle bells has been as
a commemoration to a fallen friend. A brass bell is hung
from the left side of the swing arm of the motorcycle. Each
time the bike is cleaned, and the biker is bending down to
polish the bell, they are reminded of their lost loved one.
Legend of the Gremlin Bell
As the story goes, an old gray-beard was riding home from
Mexico, with saddlebags loaded full of toys and trinkets for
some kids in an orphanage near where he lived. It was a
cold night in the high deserts just north of the border. As
he rode he thought of rides past, epic journeys with long
lost friends and the many nights just like this spent in the
saddle.
Ahead in the small beam of his old headlamp he thought he
saw something. As he rode on it appeared again, this time
there were more of them. Tiny little creatures that seemed
to dart in and out of the beam as fast as the wind. They
were dark little dodgy spirits, quick, and all but translucent
in the moonlight—they were road gremlins. Before he could
react they were on the bike. As he mashed on the brakes
the front tire blew, and the old rear drum brake that had
served him well for years locked up.
When he came to he was nearly ten yards from his bike.
One saddle bag had been torn loose and was lying next to
him in the cold, hard packed dirt. In the light of the moon
he could see his bike, the little spirit like road gremlins
dancing on top. He raised

himself up to his elbows, where he could see them more
clearly, and they caught a glimpse of him too. That’s when
they began to approach. Slowly, almost curiously, they
stalked towards him. As they advanced he picked up the
only thing that was within reach, the saddle bag, and began
to wave it at them trying to keep them at bay. From inside
the bag came a ringing noise.
He noticed that if he shook the bag the little gremlins would
fall back, plugging their ears in retreat. He quickly
unstrapped the bag and dug out two sleigh bells from a set
of toy reindeer buried in the bag. As he knelt there shaking
the bells the gremlins retreated off into the darkness.
As if attracted like a moth to a flame, two staggered lights
approached from the distance, and came upon the lone
rider in the darkness. To the lone rider they seemed like
angels coming upon him with wings, guided by the sound of
the bells. The two riders helped the old gray-beard brush
himself off and gather his belongings. They set up camp
and talked long into the night, about the old man’s brush
with the road gremlins, and of many rides past. The old
man offered to pay, but as-is biker tradition, the two men
would not accept any form of repayment.
In the morning the men helped the gray-beard patch his tire
and limp to a little service station in the next town. Again,
as they prepared to go their separate ways, the men
refused payment. The old man had suspected this, so in
the early morning hours just before dawn, he had
awakened and attached two bells, one to each of his angel
rider’s bikes. As the old man watched his new friends roll
out of the dusty service station driveway, he thought he
could hear the ringing of bells over the low rumble of the
bikes.
Epilogue
There are many variations of the ride bell legend, and
almost as many ways to tell it as there are bikers to tell the
tale. Like many other time honored stories of past, in the
beginning it was passed on through word of mouth, from
one biker to the next.
In a way, this story is just like any true biker, it doesn’t
matter how you dress it, the core of the story remains.
Protection is offered in the generosity of friends or in
random acts of brotherhood along the road. The spirit of
camaraderie and brotherhood between bikers is what the
ride bell encompasses.

Harley-Davidson Recall 2013: 2014 Touring Motorcycles Recalled
For ‘Do Not Ride’ Faulty Hydraulic Clutch System [FULL LIST]

Harley-Davidson has recalled some 29,000 bikes to address a safety issue. Reuters
“Do not ride” is the message Harley-Davidson has released to dealers this week regarding its new 2014 touring motorcycles.
According to a statement released by the Milwaukee-based company Wednesday, several different models and a total of 25,185
motorcycles are being voluntarily recalled for a faulty hydraulic clutch system. According to the press release, Harley-Davidson
dealers have been issued a “do not ride” and “do not deliver” notice until the safety issue is remedied.
“The inspection and repair of these motorcycles is extremely important, so it’s critical that our customers with affected vehicles
contact their dealers immediately. We apologize for this circumstance,” said Tony Wilcox, Harley-Davidson general manager of
motorcycle new product delivery. “The company is committed to correcting this issue and providing customers with the quality
experience and service they expect… The safety of our customers is our highest priority,” he said.
The recall reportedly affects specific models of the 2014 bikes. According to the press release, FLHTCU, FLHTK, FLHTP, FLHX,
FLHXS, FLHTKSE and FLHRSE models are currently the only bikes included in the recall. Harley-Davidson has also issued a
recall for 3,861 Softail® CVOs and Trikes (models FLHTCUTG, FXSBSE and FLSTNSE) built between May 3 and Oct. 14 of this
year.
According to a report from Reuters, the faulty clutch does not “disengage” properly and can cause a potential accident due to its
inability to allow riders to slow or stop their motorcycles.
Owners of defective Harley-Davidson products are being advised to contact their dealer as soon as possible to arrange for an
inspection. Dealers will reportedly pick up, inspect and correct the faulty system free of charge.

The Tri-state Chapter of the Harley Owners Group,
