Location,Location,
There is no denying that the chosen venue
can be the most defining factor in making
your big day a truly memorable experience.
It is vital to choose a venue that suits your
chosen theme, to enhance all of the hard
work that has been put into choosing the
smaller details. The venue will also provide
the backdrop for those all-important
photographs, so make sure you have a view
that you can look back on and be proud of.

MIA MIA
A dress of your dreams...
Having decided on the venue, the most important decision
you will have to make for your wedding will be choosing the
perfect dress. There is plenty of choice available, (and My
Lincolnshire Wedding is here to help you choose your perfect
gown) to find a style and shape to make you feel a million
dollars on your big day.
W
hether you have
been planning your
big day since you
were a little girl or have only
just started, it is worth trying
on as many styles as possible.
There are many different
choices available, so picking
‘the one’ that makes you feel
like a princess can take time.
Popular styles for brides in
2012 include dresses adorned
with lace. Lace sleeves, which
have been popular since the
Royal Wedding, and detail
over the dress can give an
illusion neckline which creates
12
| My Lincolnshire Wedding
PAGE 12 & 13 2
a soft, elegant and romantic
finish. This season’s brides will
truly float, as softly billowing
chiffon gently graces the aisle.
To indulge in the romance,
designers are generous in
their detailing, using hand
stitched crystals on large
floral appliqués and stunning
lace. Look for a dress with an
interesting back, since this is
the part that people will see the
most during the service. The
simple and refined strapless
column dresses that have
been popular over the past
few years are blooming with
adornment, appliqué, beading
and trims on everything from
necklines, to accentuated
waists and hemlines. Many
brides have been turning away
from the classic white dress to
colours, including pastel pinks
and subtle silvers which can
complement specific wedding
themes. Those who prefer
simple shapes need not worry
as there will still be plenty of
clean and graceful lines, but
there are more opportunities
to express your personality
through detailing or adding
accessories to your outfit.

Top Tips
1. Plan ahead. It is
important to have an
idea of what you would
really like for your
wedding dress, whether
it is sleeves to cover up
your arms or a full skirt.
2. Give yourself plenty of
time to find the right
dress. Many shops will
have to order it in, which
can take a few months.
3.If you are having a
whirlwind wedding,
some shops will offer
certain styles off the
peg and at a discounted
rate. However, they are
usually from a previous
season so bear this
in mind.
4.Have plenty of fittings
before the big day. Make
sure you feel comfortable
in your dress, as you will
be in it all day.
5. When the big day
arrives put your dress
on last, but give yourself
time before you leave
to appreciate at how
stunning you look on
your wedding day.

Bride beautiful...
It is important to take the time to keep to a beauty regime
in the months leading up to wedding, which will help
you achieve a flawless look. Taking time to relax and rid
yourself of the stress of planning a wedding will help create
a glowing bride.
W
hen you first
start planning
the wedding it is
important to step-up cleansing,
toning, moisturising and
exfoliating daily, which will get
rid of dead skin, leaving a smooth
complexion. Drinking plenty of
water every day will hydrate your
skin and flush out any toxins.
In the weeks before the
wedding it is time to start having
some indulgent time to ensure
your skin is in its best condition.
As well as having regular facials
you also need to remember the
rest of your body, including your
hands and feet. If your nails are
prone to breaking, start wearing
nail hardener and using cuticle

oil to moisturise your nails. Use
hand lotion throughout the
day to moisturise. If you are
getting married in the summer
and wearing strappy sandals or
jetting off on honeymoon after
the wedding don’t forget to look
after your feet. After spending
plenty of time on your toes
trying to organise the wedding
they need to be looking in
tip top condition. Using a rich
moisturising lotion and filing
every couple of days will help to
reduce hard skin.

feet and moisturising your hands
will help, especially if you are
planning to use fake tan to give a
soft glow.
Four weeks before the wedding
Have a consultation with your
beautician. Get your eyebrows
shaped and have a run through
of your wedding make-up. If
you are using a spray tan for
the big day, try this out now
so you don’t look orange on
the big day. Meet with your
hairdresser and try different
styles. Take photos so you
can have a look at them all
individually. Don’t forget if
you are having bridesmaids to
take them with you so you can
decide on how you would like
their hair to look.
One week before the wedding
Treat yourself to a day out at
the spa. Get your legs and bikini
line waxed, leaving plenty of
time to get rid of any redness.
Have a manicure and pedicure
to ensure your nails will look
perfect on the big day.
On the day
Take some time to pamper
yourself. Have a long soak in the
bath. To calm and sooth, use
some lavender candles. Don’t
forget this is your day and you
need to be feeling your very best.
Make sure to wear loose clothing
when having your hair and makeup done so as not to smudge.

| YOUR QUESTIONS |
Your questions answered
We have decided not to invite children to our wedding but many of
our friends and family have young kids. Is it selfish not to invite them?
It is your wedding and you can invite whoever you like. Many couples
decide not to invite children to the wedding, sometimes out of personal
choice and other times the venue or your budget may not cater for
smaller guests. Deciding on not having children at your wedding should
be a decision that is made early. When you send out your invitations,
having some carefully chosen words at the bottom will let your guests
know of your decision. Many guests will enjoy the idea of a day (and
possibly a night) away from their children to help you celebrate your
wedding and letting them know early will help them to arrange child care.

PAGE 21 1
My fiancé and I want to have a
more intimate wedding. How
do we decide on who to invite
without upsetting people?
The guest list can be one of
the most difficult decisions when
planning your wedding. Do you
invite your second cousins you
haven’t seen since you were kids
as it will keep your aunt happy?
It is your day and you should
invite people who you want to be
there. Unfortunately, sometimes
choosing some people and not
others can seem like a daunting
decision, but it is your day and
you should have people who have
supported you both. You could
always have a smaller ceremony
and wedding breakfast and invite
more guests to the evening
entertainment without this
increasing the costs too much.
We have a small budget. How
can we incorporate everything
we want in the wedding without
compromising on the details?
With the cost of the average
wedding being over £20,000 it
is easy to see why some couples
are cutting back in certain areas.
However, having a smaller
budget doesn’t mean having
to leave anything out. Many
couples are choosing to create
the finer details themselves, with
homemade invitations, hand
crafted decorations and more
personal favours. If you’re not
very creative there are plenty of
suggestions on the internet which
can give you ideas you may not
have thought of. And with all
these personal touches it will add
individuality to your wedding.

| WEDDING CAKES |
Have your cake...
After wowing your guests with your wedding dress, the next
thing they will be looking at is your choice of cake. Your
centrepiece will be something that can complement your
theme, or can be something that reflects your personality.
G
one are the days of
the traditional threetiered cake with royal
icing and marzipan. Now
couples can choose a cake
that is personal to them. To
start it is important to know
the number of guests you are
expecting. This will help your
baker and you to decide on a
size that will give everyone a
chance to taste your sugary
delicacy.
It is important to select
a baker early on in your
planning, so they can come
up with ideas to suit you
and if you opt for delicate
decorations they have plenty
of time to arrange this.
22
| My Lincolnshire Wedding PAGE 22 & 23 2
Instead of a traditional
sponge or fruit cake why not
try a tiered cheesecake with
ribbon and lace decorations?
Or if you want something a
bit different, trays of playful
desserts can be a fun way to
end your reception. Many
couples are also opting for
individual cupcakes and
a new trend is individual
co-ordinating cakes.
Popular colours are black
and white and pastel pinks;
colours such as avocado/
sage green and ivory are also
prevalent.
Another option is a cupcake
bouquet. Couples are using
these as centrepieces for their
wedding reception and they
make for an unusual dessert
for guests.
After the wedding of Prince
William to Kate Middleton,
an old tradition which is
becoming popular again is to
have a groom’s cake. These
cakes represent a hobby
or passion of the groom
and can be anything from
a mobile phone to a golf
club. Traditionally they were
passed out to any unmarried
female guests, although now
many grooms opt to have
the cake on display with
the wedding cake to add
some individuality, or quirky
alternative.

Getting insured
With the average cost of a
wedding now £20,000, it
is important to make sure
you are protected. There are
many levels of cover starting
from as little as £20, but it
is important to get a policy
that will cover you for those
24

PAGE 24 2
unavoidable changes. Most
policies will cover you for
wedding attire, both hired and
bought, the wedding cake,
gifts, rings and flowers. It is
important to look around at
cover levels that will suit your
wedding.
The legal side
Often the last thing on a
couple’s mind when they are
planning their wedding is the
possibility of a breakdown in
the relationship later. However,
it is certainly something which
should be considered if either
or both have assets they would
wish to protect. More and more
couples are now considering
entering into a prenuptial
agreement for this purpose.
A prenuptial agreement is
one whereby a couple, prior to
their marriage, set out how they
are going to share/protect their
assets on separation.
Technically, prenuptial
agreements are not formally
binding in law. This therefore
raises the question as to why
they should be drawn up in the
first place. Recently, however,
there have been a number of
cases in which the courts have
taken them into account. The
courts are now clearly more
prepared to consider what
the parties intended should
happen if they were to separate
in the future.
For a prenuptial agreement
to have more sway at a later
date there are a number of steps
that need to be considered
before such an agreement
is entered into. It is strongly
advised that both parties take
independent legal advice
as early as possible and at
least several months before
marriage, so that they can be
advised accordingly. For more
advice on whether a prenuptial
agreement is appropriate in your
circumstances, please contact
Gemma Garfoot at Burton and
Dyson on 01427 610761.

Do you take
this man?
One of the most important jobs for the
groom is to pick an outfit. He will be
the most important man of the day and
it is important that he looks the part.
Your wedding is the start of married
life and you will want to begin it with
great memories.
T
here are many options
available when it
comes to groom’s
clothing, from a traditional
morning coat to a more
popular Prince Edward style
jacket. Choosing your suit
cut is only the starting point
for your outfit, with the
accessories making your attire
personal to you and your
bride.
Many couples will have a
theme for their wedding and
it is easy to incorporate this
26
| My Lincolnshire Wedding PAGE 26 & 27 2
Top Tips
1. Try on different
styles early on in the
planning. This will
help you to decide
what suits you.
2. Pick a colour to go
with the theme of
your wedding. For
a smart afternoon
wedding a black suit
will add formality to
your day, or if you are
going for a more laid
back approach why
not try a striking grey?
3. Take your
groomsmen and the
father of the bride
with you. They will
need to try on their
suits and you can
make a day of it.
4. Decide on the colours
for the waistcoats and
accessories before you
go shopping. There
are many options
available and having
too many options can
make things harder.
5. If you want to add
some individuality
to your suit why not
choose something
slightly different to
the wedding party? A
contrasting waistcoat
will mean all eyes are
on you.

into your chosen suit. If you
choose to pick a waistcoat
and matching cravat or tie
to match the colour of the
flowers and decorations, it will
add continuity to your theme.
Choosing the right suit can
be a great excuse to get the
boys together and go and try
on different styles and cuts, to

pick the perfect outfit.
Once you have picked your
suit it is important to make
sure it fits properly. Your local
suit hire shop will be able to
help with this. Making sure the
sleeves don’t come over the
end of your fingers and your
trousers fit to the floor will
ensure that you look the part.

| GROOMS |
A man’s job
Although many grooms used to be able
to put their feet up and let the bride
and her mother plan the wedding, this
is not so much the case anymore. While
many couples choose to plan their day
together there are still some jobs which
are traditionally organised and paid for
by the groom.
A
s many couples are
waiting until later in life to
get married, and paying
for their own nuptials, there is not
so much emphasis on the groom
arranging specific parts of the
wedding. However there are still a
few areas which the groom should
generally cover. These include:
• Buying the wedding rings.
Although you will generally
choose these together, it is
traditionally the groom’s role to
28
| My Lincolnshire Wedding PAGE 28.indd 2
buy these.
• Organising the transport.
This will include transport
for the groom, the bride and
bridesmaids and possibly
other family members, so it
is important to discuss who
will need transport before you
start looking.
• The cost of suits, including those
for the best men and ushers.
This could be to buy or hire.
• Any fees for the church or
registry office. It doesn’t include
the hire of the venue if you are
also holding your reception
there, although it does include
covering the cost of the registrar.
• The wedding night
accommodation. Many
couples opt to stay at the
location of their reception, so
see if this is possible.
• The honeymoon. Although
this is a decision which many
couples make together, many
brides are letting their future
husbands pick the romantic
location and enjoying a surprise
on the day.
• The flowers. These include
the bride’s bouquet, the
bridesmaids’ posies and the
buttonholes, but not for
decorating the venue.
• Gifts for the bridesmaids and
best men or ushers. This is
another decision you will
probably make as a couple.

| FATHER OF THE BRIDE |
Who gives this woman?
A
part from your own
wedding, the day
of your daughter’s
wedding will be one of the
most important days of
your life. As the Father of
the Bride there are plenty of
responsibilities which you will
need to undertake, including
paying the bill, although
this it not always customary
anymore.
Many couples now are
waiting until later in life to
tie the knot and in doing so
many couples are paying for
the wedding themselves.
Although your daughter and
future son-in-law may have
been saving for the cost of
hosting their special day,
there are plenty of roles and
responsibilities a Father of the
Bride has.

Top Tips
1. Travel to the wedding
with your daughter.
This is a tradition which
continues. By being
with her you will be able
to calm any last-minute
nerves she may have.
2. Walk your daughter
down the aisle. As a
Father of the Bride
this will be your most
important role on the
day.
3. Stand in the receiving
line at the reception.
Greet all the guests as
they arrive and explain
where they need to
go at this point in
the ceremony.
4. Ensure that all the
guests have a drink
before the speeches
begin to toast the happy
couple.
5. Make a short speech
and toast to your
daughter and new
son-in-law. This is
your time to reminisce
about special memories
and maybe a couple of
embarrassing stories.
6. When invited, take
the bride’s mother for
a dance to the couple’s
first song.
7. Be the last to leave
the reception, making
sure all your guests get
home safely after a truly
memorable day.
8. Once everyone has
gone and the bills are
paid, give yourself a
large pat on the back,
you deserve it!

Get me to
the church...
Once you have decided on where you are
going to get married, it is important to
decide how you are going to arrive. From
classic cars to a horse and carriage, or a
sports car, there is plenty of choice.
Y
ou might already know
how you want to make
your grand entrance, but
with so many options available it
is worth having a look around to
see if anything else catches your
eye. Organising the transport early
will ensure that what you choose
is available on your wedding day
and doesn’t conflict with any
other bookings. You will also need
to decide who will be travelling
in the car and how many cars you
will need. Traditionally the bride
will be accompanied by her father,
the groom will arrive with his best
men and ushers and the mother
of the bride will travel with the
bridesmaids. There is also the
transport between the wedding
venue and reception to organise
30
| My Lincolnshire Wedding PAGE 30 & 31 2
for the bride and groom, if you
are holding these at different
locations.
When choosing your transport
it is important to keep things
within the theme of your
wedding. If you have decided
to have a traditional, elegant
wedding, then a vintage Bentley
or a horse and carriage with
traditional dressed footmen will
add a touch of sophistication.
However, if you have opted
for something less formal then
there are plenty of choices
of modern classics including
Ferraris, Lamborghinis, BMWs
and Mercedes. Of course if the
bride decides to have a traditional
entrance the groom can always
make his own celebrity entrance.

Transport Tips
1. Make sure you visit and
look at your preferred
choice of transport.
Blemishes and dents

2. Choose someone local.
This will save you
money compared to
choosing a company
that has to travel a
further distance, in
petrol and chauffeur
hours.
3. Make sure you have
enough space to take
everyone who will
need transport to the
venue. Apart from the
bride and groom, there
are the bridesmaids,
best men, the bride’s
parents and possibly
grandparents.
4. Ask for a discount.
If you are booking a
selection of cars you
may be able to save
some pennies.
5. If budgets are tight,
consider taking a limo
for everyone instead of
several cars.

intrigue your guests by sending
out exquisite invitations. Since

Brigg. It was a very poignant and special day for the couple,
missing the presence of Darren’s mother, who died of cancer in
2008, and with fireworks paid for by Darren’s late grandfather.
Darren is a deputy aftersales manager at Hartwell Plc,
Scunthorpe and Olivia is an area events manager for Cancer
Research UK. Olivia has had her own health problems, after
being diagnosed with cancer in 2008. After the ceremony and
reception the couple went on to honeymoon in the Maldives.
