A wide range of professionals attended the event
including mortgage bankers, realtors and many of our
own past presidents. It is good to see us all working
and playing together to help get this industry back
to where it belongs. Our chili cook off is to be held
in the Ferguson showroom on September 17th, and
that is an opportune time to invite a non-member to
come and mix and mingle with those who support
the building industry. By the time you receive this
newsletter, the fishing tournament will have been
held, and I’m sure you can hear of some good
catches.
The HBA’s top priority is to serve the needs of our
members by providing education opportunities,
fighting for the housing industry on major issues to
help your businesses thrive, and saving you money
wherever possible. There is power in numbers so ask
someone to join today!
Mission Statement
The Greater Columbus Home Builders Association is a nonprofit
trade association representing the construction industry in Muscogee,
Harris, Marion, Chattahoochee, Talbot and Taylor Counties since 1947.
We benefit our members by providing continuing education and
political advocacy and promoting innovative building practices. We benefit our community by providing desirable places to live, work and play.
Our members are committed to upholding ethical and professional
standards while advancing the quality of life in our community.
Important Notice
Dues payments to your local association are not deductible as
charitable contributions for federal income tax purposes. However,
dues payments may be deductible as ordinary and necessary business
expense, subject to an exclusion for lobbying activity. Because a portion
of your dues for 2013 is used for lobbying by NAHB (17%) and by HBAG
(82%), the amounts are not deductible for income tax purposes.

An extraordinary evening is what
you missed if you did not attend
the reverse raffle last month.
Even with today’s economy,
this year became our biggest
and best yet with ticket sales
reaching an all-time high. A special thank you goes
to Georgia Power for being the raffle sponsor and
to ProBuild for the board sponsorship. 84 Lumber,
Brand Vaughan, Builders First/Weyerhaeuser and
Ferguson Enterprises were among other supporters
to be acknowledged. Door prizes, valued at over
$7,000.00, were not only nice but plentiful. Be sure
to see the list of these supporters elsewhere in the
newsletter and thank them. Congratulations to
Jordan Bachman for winning the $10,000! Maybe
it will be Rennie Bickerstaff’s turn next year. We
appreciate you Rennie for all the tickets you have
purchased over the years.
It’s never too early to start looking forward to the next
International Builders Show, which takes place this
coming Feb. 4-6 in Las Vegas and is co-located with
Kitchen & Bath Industry Show. Details will soon be
announced and registration opens Sept. 3. More to
come!
Sincerely,
Dave

Purchases of new homes plunged 13.4% in July to
only 394,000, the steepest drop in years underscoring
the uneven pace of recovery. Worse, April, May
and June new home sales were revised sharply
lower and are officially in the books at just 446,000,
439,000 and 445,000 respectively. Moreover, the
sales rate is only 6.8% higher year-over-year, hardly
breakneck improvement. This explains why residential
construction employment growth has barely
increased.

Remodelers
Corner
Tips on hiring a remodeler
When remodeling, always be sure
you hire a qualified professional,
because you are buying a service rather than
a product. The quality of service the remodeler
provides will determine the quality of the finished
product and your satisfaction with the result.
President Dave Erickson presents Tommy Hinton
the Golden Hammer Award for his distinguished service
to our community.
Carson Hinton presents Allison Moyer a check from the
Remodelers Council for the Muscogee Country
School District’s students studying in the construction field.

September 2013
To ensure your satisfaction ask family, friends or
coworkers for recommendations. Make sure the
builder/remodeler has sufficient workers comp and
general liability. If not, you may be liable for any
construction-related accidents on your premises.
The builder or home remodeler should have a
permanent business location and a good reputation
with local banks and suppliers. Be cautious of
unusually low-priced bids. Keep in mind that less
expensive does not necessarily mean better!
