PRINCIPAL’S REPORT Connected Seniors Program A team of Doncaster Secondary College students will be assisting Peter Blasina (Gadget Guy) in delivering IT workshops for Seniors. The major aim of the workshop is to demystify the internet. Our students will teach senior citizens how to use the internet for communication and a vehicle to access a whole new world of exciting and useful information. I am proud of our involvement in this worthwhile community activity. It is a fantastic opportunity for our students to share their knowledge and computer skills and to connect their classroom learning to a real life scenario. The Connected Seniors Program is a Telstra initiative. The workshops are to be held in the City of Monash Council Office in Glen Waverley on Friday, 8 June. Mrs Éva McMaster Principal DEBATING AND PUBLIC SPEAKING Public Speaking The Rostrum Voice of Youth Competition was held at Scotch College, Hawthorn, on Sunday, Debaters Association of Victoria Debating Results Round 3 A GRADE – Team 1 Topic – That we should drastically increase the price of alcohol. Saahil Bijlani Best speaker Reuben Tee Andrey Chabunina Some of the activities that we enjoyed the most were archery and sword fighting and trying on armour and clothing. We also enjoyed when we were treated as criminals and had to serve our punishments. The day was filled with entertainment and learning. It was a very beneficial experience. We can say that personally our knowledge of the medieval times has been extended by the presentations given and we think that the teaching style that was used is very effective for students of all stages. D GRADE Topic – That we should not allow people under 18 to compete in professional sport. Brandon Li Best speaker Tsu Jie Ng Christian Petkaris Defeated by Marcellin College Congratulations to our debaters and public speakers who have ‘found their voice’ and are ‘spreading the word’. Mrs Mandy Hanrahan Debating and Public Speaking Coordinator MEDIEVAL INCURSION On Tuesday, 15 May, the Year students who participate history, got to partake in an incursion. The organisation, Medieval Education, came to our school to involve us and educate us further about medieval times and the people who lived in that era. They presented five areas; games and archery, weapons and armour, fashion and dress, crime and punishment and knight training and tournaments. In each of these subjects, we were taught by a different learning style, a hands-on environment and included in small activities and demonstrations. Jess, Alicia and Tersia 8E SPORT AND RECREATION COMPLEX The College has been informed by the building contractors that the first day of the concrete pour for the Sport Stadium will be on Wednesday, 30 May. This will mean an increase in trucks delivering to the site and we therefore ask that students and parents take extra care around the Church Road entrance to the site during this time. Mr Tim Sprigg - Facilities Manager PROPOSED PARKING RESTRICTIONS IN CHURCH ROAD STUDY OPPORTUNITY FOR UNIT 3 EXAMS Council Local Laws officers have raised safety concerns due to parked vehicles during school peak times, in Church Road near the intersection of Sharon Street, on the east side of Church Road, just west of house numbers 142 and 144 Church Road. To improve safety at this location and to provide a ‘drop off’ and ‘pick up’ facility for parents, it is proposed to install ‘NO PARKING, 8am-9am; 3pm-4pm; School Days’ parking restrictions on Church Road outside the western boundaries of house numbers 142 and 144 Church Road, as shown in the attached drawing. For your information, the Victorian Road Safety Road Rule 2009, rule number 168, states that in a No Parking’ area, ‘a driver is permitted to stop the vehicle for not more than 2 minutes to drop off or pick up passengers or goods and the driver must not leave the vehicle unattended’. There will be mid-year exams for Accounting, Biology and Physics on Tuesday, 12 June and Chemistry on Wednesday, 13 June. A team of VCE High Achievers will be facilitating study sessions in the lead up to the June Exam period. It is anticipated that this measure would provide parents with the opportunity to ‘drop off’ and ‘pick up’ their children in Church Road, thus reducing congestion and improving safety at this location. Study Date/Time The ‘NO PARKING, 8am-9am; 3pm-4pm; School Days’ signs are proposed to be installed by the end of June 2012. Ms Belinda McGee Senior Years Curriculum Leader GEOGRAPHY CAKE COMPETITION Studying Geography enables students to gain an understanding and an appreciation of the world in which they live. As part of their study, students were given the opportunity to present an area of Geography in a visual way – using cake as the main source of material! Cakes included volcanoes, endangered species, environmental disasters, maps, compasses and even an atlas! The cakes and models were displayed during the College’s Open Night and it was rewarding to see the interest and hear the positive comments about the way students presented a geographic theme using a cake! Prizes were awarded for a number of categories. Congratulations to all students who participated. You should all be proud of your efforts. Being runners up to Balwyn is something we can be proud of as our players who played the game in the finest of spirits and sportsmanship. Both the girls and boys had strong wins against Hawthorn Secondary College, Camberwell High School, Templestowe Secondary College and Kew High School losing just one set against all four schools. However, as mentioned earlier Balwyn High were too strong with very competent players. Congratulations to Mel Liu who coached the girls’ and our one and only Eddy Luk who coached the boys. A highlight for the students was a stop off at McDonalds/Subway to renew energies spent FRENCH NEWS We are looking for Host Families from Doncaster Secondary College who would be willing to host a French student in their home for a few weeks. The students (two girls and five boys) will be arriving in Melbourne on Sunday, 8 July and will be departing for France on Saturday, 4 August. They all come from the same school in Bordeaux. This can be a wonderful and very enriching cultural experience for both the host family and the students. You don’t need to speak or study French to participate in the program.
