Hirschbach is proud to recognize one of our very own, a breast cancer survivor, Marsha Saunders. Marsha is a 39 year-old single mother and grandmother from Dubuque, Iowa. She has 5 children, ages 22 to 7, and three grandchildren, ages 6 to 3. Marsha recently graduated from the University of Dubuque and has been a member of the Extended Operations group here at Hirschbach Motor Lines in Dubuque, IA until recently. Marsha has accepted a position working with the Orientation team at our Atlanta, GA terminal and is in the process of relocating to Atlanta now. Marsha’s story began in April of 2014. She noticed a mass in her right breast. She had a biopsy done that showed a grade 3 invasive ductal carcinoma, ER positive, PR positive, Her-2/Neu 3+. She underwent a right mastectomy on May 5, 2014, which revealed a multifocal invasive ductal cancer with extensive DCIS. Her largest tumor was 2.3 centimeters in size and 14 of 17 nodes were positive for cancer. Since then, she has been going through chemotherapy, radiation and has had multiple surgeries. Marsha hopes that after meeting her and hearing her story, more people will perform self-exams. It only takes a few minutes a day and if you notice something, get it checked out, no matter how big or small. Despite her diagnosis, Marsha has managed to stay positive, keep smiling and remain focused on the future and finding a cure. “I have enjoyed my co-workers and all the support I have had here at Hirschbach, from the drivers to everyone that I have encountered. Thank you for all your support and being there for my family and I in our time of need. I have recently fought the battle and won and am a advocate in a fight for the cure!!! FIGHT LIKE A GIRL!!!!” Interested in contributing to the Hirschbach Herald? The terminal is open Monday-Friday 7:00am to midnight, Saturday and Sunday 7:00am to 5:30 pm. They are a full service location. Monmouth Terminal: This terminal can do all PM’s and most repairs on tractors and trailers, but currently not doing engine work or body repairs at this terminal. Please remember to send in your breakdown macros. Following this procedure will cut down on phone calls so we can assist in a timelier manner. We have grown to over 800 trucks and are now in the process of adding more staff to assist with over the road issues. Please be patient as we are experiencing growing pains. No Need to send in PM service macros!!!!! Starting now the planners will schedule your truck and/ or trailer PM services at one of our terminals. Just a friendly reminder to complete a maintenance survey after completion of repairs on your equipment at one of our terminals. We need your input to make necessary changes in our department and process to become BEST IN CLASS. The survey is confidential. No names or unit numbers are used to coach our staff of issues/concerns. We can’t get to the top without YOU! Hirschbach is ALL IN TO WIN. It was great to see our drivers at each terminal for the driver appreciation week. Thank you all for taking time to stop and say hello. Also, a big thank you to Brad, Tom and AJ for visiting each location. The Atlanta Terminal The Atlanta terminal is up and running! We opened the doors for business on June 1, and started truck maintenance about 1 month later. We have steadily been staffing up the facility and making improvements to the offices, shop, and driver areas. The terminal has a private 2nd floor dedicated to our drivers, including a lounge, showers, washers and dryers (soon), and 6 private rooms for resting with a recliner, desk, and TV. We also plan to add a fitness room in the near future. We are working on taming the landscaping outside the building. The facility had been vacant for several years, and the vegetation has grown out of control. This will be cut back to prepare the way to add additional fencing and security. Atlanta will be our first terminal with RFID access for trucks entering our facility. Driver training will begin in Atlanta on October 15. We had the opportunity to visit with and thank over 250 drivers at the different facilities, and to share information on company updates and driver safety performance. It was a honor to take the time to thank every driver for their hard work and dedication. Your time away from your family and friends do not go unnoticed. It takes a strong person to do what you do and we hope you know how much we appreciate you! Special thanks to the many people who helped make this happen. Off The Scale… Over $1.5 billion is spent on costumes each year and more than $2.5 billion on other Halloween paraphernalia Interested in contributing to the Hirschbach Herald? As a child, Johnny always wanted to be a trucker and it has been his long life dream. In December of 2000, Johnny was laid off his job trucking for a company that shut its door just before Christmas. It was a bad year. Hirschbach then called Johnny asking if he would work for them. He was full of joy after he was hired. Johnny has a safe record with Hirschbach and was asked how he plans his daily activities to stay safe. Johnny stated he plans his day before he turns the key. He will assess his plans for his load, and plan at least two break events, just in case he faces an obstacle. Johnny plans each day and realistically expects obstacles throughout his day. He watches traffic as far as his eyes can see and stays aware of his surroundings in the blind areas. Johnny makes sure he adjusts his speed as he travels in congested areas. He always assumes that something could and will obstruct his lanes of travel. “Someone is going to do something unexpected and I am always ready to make split decisions”, says Johnny. I asked Johnny if personal issues impact his safe decision making process during his daily driving routines. Johnny stated, “Yes, it can have a huge impact and can wear down a driver’s mental thinking”. Johnny knows that Hirschbach is family and that if there was a problem, Hirschbach would get him home safely. Johnny stated he had a tragedy at home, in which he notified Hirschbach. Hirschbach at that time had a relay set up so that he would be able to get home in a safe and reasonable amount of time. Johnny stated, “You don’t ever want to driver emotionally exhausted, this could really hinder all safe decision making for safe travels”. Johnny has a very clean Hours of Service log and when asked how do you do it? Johnny stated he pays attention to his time, he watches the warnings and assures the breaks are taken when required. This boils down to planning your trip in accordance to your dispatches and pre-plans from start to finish. As for truck speeds and control, Johnny said that his number one priority is to have control at all times. This includes the speeds down hills, two lane roads and small towns. Most important is school and construction zones. Johnny said “I have caught myself going over the speed limit and realized that I must slow down to meet that posted speed limit. Speeds can be the severity of any accident, having complete control and keeping safe distances allow me to make split decisions to avoid obstacles”. Interested in contributing to the Hirschbach Herald? Email [email protected]. 7 8 Headlights On (Continued) Johnny prepares himself each day for accidents. “I have a family at home who depends on me and I must make sure everyone around me who has families go home safe”, says Johnny. In the world of trucking, there is no room or margin of error driving a large commercial vehicle. We must be on our game, and get to our destinations safely and meet the demand of on-time service. Hirschbach is my family and my career; however my family at home is my number one priority. Each person driving down a traveling portion of the road each day has families. I place safety and safe driving habits as my number one priority. I will arrive at all my destinations safe, but most of all I will arrive at my home safe! Johnny says, “Remember this; having a great positive attitude each day, providing respect to each person, customer and law enforcement officer, will indeed result in a positive safe driver working for the greatest company in the world, Hirschbach”. Thanks for your dedication, Johnny! It is appreciated! Story By Larry Nilmeier, Safety My Story, Regarding Breast Cancer Awareness By Kris Hessling , Claims Department My sister was diagnosed with stage 4 breast cancer. You would think she would have noticed something or that it would have been caught before it got that far, but she did not notice anything at all. She is a nurse at the Platteville, Wisconsin hospital. Luckily, it was not in her lymph nodes. She had a mastectomy completed and they are certain they got it all. She is, however, going through chemo to make darn sure it will be gone. For good. A couple weeks ago, we had a cookout at her home. My two brothers showed up with their sons with shaved heads to show their support for my sister. My nephews girlfriend and my one brothers step daughter have really long hair as well as my sisters two daughters. They have agreed to cut their hair and donate it for a wig for my sister should she decide to get one. I would also agree to cut mine for her, but I’m not quite sure if it’s long enough yet. I have though showed my support for my sister in another way. I got a tattoo of guardian angel wings with the pink breast cancer awareness ribbon in the middle. When it comes down to it, yes I got it for my sister, but it’s also a symbol of support for the rest of the women out there that have gone through this and that may have to go through it. Off The Scale… The Romans also celebrated Halloween at their Harvest Festival on November 1st. Interested in contributing to the Hirschbach Herald? The Blue Zone Project is a community-wide well-being improvement initiative to help people make healthy choices easier. The goal is to become a Certified Blue Zone Worksite in Sioux City. Everyone is working as a team and individually on daily, weekly and monthly goals. Each office employee has made a commitment of being tobacco free or a weight loss challenge. Since the program started , 11 weeks ago, the team has lost a total of 111.7 pounds and 4 people have given up tobacco. Extra incentive are given for going the extra mile with prizes. Keep up the good work! 9 Simple, Healthy Snacks for Truck Drivers on The Road Ever get the munchies on the road, only to step into a truck stop or convenience store and find that everything is over processed, fattening, and sugary? It can be hard to stay on top of a healthy eating plan if you can’t find healthy snacks to tide you over until the next meal. In this article there are 9 snack ideas for drivers that are easy to keep on the road. 1. Dry roasted, unsalted nuts. There’s some debate over whether nuts should be considered a “healthy” snack or not due to their high fat and calorie counts. The good news is, the fat in nuts is mostly monounsaturated (aka GOOD fat) and may reduce your risk of heart disease. Be mindful of serving size, however, as calories can really add up — you should only have a handful of nuts. Opt for almonds or pistachios, and be mindful of sodium levels. Pick up the unsalted variety if possible. Nutritional info (1 oz pistachios [~49 nuts]): 158 calories, 6 grams protein, 13 grams fat 2. Fresh or dried fruit. Got a sweet tooth? Snack on some healthy dried fruit instead of reaching for a candy bar. Be careful what fruits you pick, though, as some have a lot of added sugar. Also note that most dried fruit contains less Vitamin C as a result of the drying process, but they still have high amounts of fiber. Keep in mind that a dried apricot and a fresh apricot have the same amount of calories, but because we eat with our eyes, it can be easy to eat more calories than you’d eat if you just chose the fresh apricot since dried fruit takes up less space than fresh. Nutritional info (8 dried apricots): 78 calories, 1 gram protein, 17 grams sugar 3. Hummus and veggies. This snack is high in iron, Vitamin C, fiber, and protein, which means you won’t go hungry for a while. And hummus is relatively light in calories — 3.5 ounces (almost 1/2 cup) and some carrot sticks is only 166 calories! Conveniently enough, our very own Jenni shared a simple recipe for hummus and veggies that’s easy to store right in your cup holder as you’re driving! You can also find pre-packaged hummus at your nearby grocery store. Nutritional info (3.5 oz hummus): 166 calories, 10 grams fat, 8 grams protein Continue on page 10 Off The Scale… It takes an average of 252 licks to get to the center of a Tootsie Pop. Energy bars can be great snacks on the road, but you have to be mindful of which you choose. Some offer a lot of fiber while also containing a lot of sugar and trans fats, which substantially negates the health factor. Here’s a good post on some of the best energy bars. These are easy to store on your truck, and don’t require any sort of heating/cooling equipment, making them a great snack when you’re in a pinch. Nutritional info (Zing protein bar, Chocolate Peanut Butter): 210 calories, 13 grams protein, 14 grams sugar 5. Hard boiled eggs. Hard boiled eggs are low-calorie and high in protein and contain many essential vitamins and minerals as well as lecithin, which helps to transport and metabolize fat. Hard boiled eggs are super easy to prepare at home and take out with you on the road, provided you have a cooler or mini fridge to store them in. A note about the cholesterol in eggs: one egg contains 212 grams of cholesterol, or about 71% of your daily allowance. Previously everyone thought “OH NO! EGGS! CHOLESTEROL! BAD!” However, recent studies have disproved this and experts maintain that eggs alone do not contribute to high cholesterol when eaten in moderation. The American Heart Association recommends one egg a day — just watch your cholesterol levels if you do consume one every day as too much cholesterol can raise your LDL. Nutritional info (1 large boiled egg): 78 calories, 5 grams fat, 6 grams protein 6. Dry roasted edamame. Edamame is just a fancy word for boiled soybeans. This low-cal snack is packed with fiber, protein, and vitamins and contains just 130 calories in one fourth cup serving. Edamame is an easy snack for the road as all you need to do to prepare it is nuke it in the microwave for a few minutes. You can find both shelled and whole pods at the grocery store in the frozen food section. Shelled is a bit more convenient for road life, but whole pods will require more work to eat, helping you to eat less. Whichever you prefer — both are healthy. Add any spices or salt (not too much!) your heart desires and voila — tasty snack. Nutritional info (1/4 cup dry roasted edamame): 130 calories, 4 grams fat, 14 grams protein 7. String cheese & fruit. Some string cheese and a piece of fruit can be a great snack for the road. With about 80 calories in the cheese and about 100 or so (depending on what you choose) in the fruit, you have a filling, protein and vitamin rich snack for around 200 calories. Nutritional info (Sargento String Cheese & 1 apple): 175 calories, 6 grams fat, 8 grams protein, 4 grams fiber 8. Rice cake with peanut butter. I know a lot of people think rice cakes taste like air, but I think they’re delicious — you can get different flavors if the plain ones are too bland for you. They’re low in calories and fat, and they’re filling so you will be less inclined to grab something else later. One con though — they’re lacking in the ways of nutritional value and high in carbs/glycemic index, so I don’t recommend this if you’re diabetic. But if you’re looking for a low-cal snack to tide you over, give this one a go! Add a bit of nutrition by adding some natural peanut butter on top to get some healthy fats in there. You could also add some banana slices on top for a variation on a PB & banana sandwich! Nutritional info (1 plain, unsalted cake and 1 tablespoon natural peanut butter): 130 calories, 8 grams fat, 5 grams protein 9. Beef/turkey jerky: Jerky is often labeled as an unhealthy food, but if you get the right kind, it can be a good high protein snack. Many varieties are packed with salt and preservatives though, so look for low-sodium brands if possible as well as brands made with natural ingredients (look for “no preservatives” and “no nitrates” on the bag). Obviously due to the high sodium content this is a snack that you should have in moderation. It’s easy to eat the whole bag and then you’ve consumed almost your entire day’s sodium allowance. Nutritional info (1 oz Reduced Sodium Jack Link’s Beef Jerky): 80 calories, 15 grams protein, 1 gram fat More information can be found at: https://www.thehealthytrucker.net/9-snacks-for-truck-drivers/2/ Interested in contributing to the Hirschbach Herald? Hirschbach has an opportunity for their drivers to be “ALL IN” performers and make up to $20,000 additional per year! This year, our drivers have received EpicVue DireCTV, Sirius Radio, All In Rewards package, and a compensation performance package. Here are the details on the most recent rollout: Hirschbach Announces New Driver Quarterly Incentive Program Everyone, as a token of our appreciation for what you do, we have decided to roll out a new incentive program! Here are the details, thank you for being "All in to Win!" Hirschbach's New & Improved Quarterly Incentive Current Bonus ($4,000 per year maximum): Eligible drivers & operators who run at least 30,000 miles during the quarter can earn $500 (30-32k), $750 (32-34k), or $1,000 (34k+) if you are accident free and CSA point free. New Incentive ($20,000+ per year maximum): This industry leading incentive program rewards our industry's best drivers with top incentive pay! The incentive has four components and will replace our existing quarterly incentive. Productivity ($4,000 per year maximum): The current productivity incentive with payouts of $500 (30-32k), $750 (32-34k), and $1,000 (34k) will remain in place. We're also adding a 4th level at $250 (25-30k) and changed the miles to PC Practical (paid miles) from HHG short miles. No accidents or CSA points are still required to earn this incentive. Service ($4,000 per year maximum) - Drivers who earn a productivity incentive during a given quarter & have zero service failures will double their productivity incentive! Service failures include delivering loads late for which enough time was allotted. Service failures also include having to relay a load onto another driver due to not running the load as planned, not being available for dispatch at the committed time, and customer complaints received. Accidents (No maximum, $2,500 at 300k accident free miles, $6,250 at 1 million accident free miles, and $15,000+ per year at 2.5 million accident free miles) - Drivers will earn .025 cent per mile for every 30k miles run accident free for their first 180k Hirschbach miles. An additional .5 cent per mile will be earned for each additional 120k accident free miles. We will recognize and credit all existing drivers with their last 120k miles with Hirschbach effective Oct 1, 2015 (the start of the new incentive plan). This incentive will also be paid quarterly based on the prior quarter miles. Off The Scale… Halloween is the 2nd most commercially successful holiday, with Christmas being the first. Interested in contributing to the Hirschbach Herald? Email [email protected]. 11 12 Incentive Program For Drivers Continued… If a driver has a preventable accident he will drop 240k miles (example: An operator has run 540k accident free miles and is being paid 3 cents incentive, but has a preventable accident...this operator would fall 240k miles to the 300k accident free level with a incentive of 2 cents per mile and would be able to work his way back up by running accident free going forward). In the quarter there is a preventable accident, the driver will not be eligible for the quarterly incentive. Fuel Economy ($4,000 per year maximum) - Each quarter your fuel economy will be compared to the fuel economy of the other drivers operating similar tractors. Beat the average by .5 MPG and earn an additional 1 cent per mile, beat the average by 1 MPG and earn an additional 2 cents per mile, and beat the average by 1.5 MPG and earn an additional 3 cents per mile. Who is eligible - Productivity and Service applies to all pay packages with the exception of percentage and own authority operators. Accident Free incentive is anyone under Hirschbach's authority. Fuel Economy Incentive is any company driver and any $.999/gallon operator. Teams - Teams are on the same criteria as a solo driver! They both have an opportunity for productivity, service, accidents, and fuel economy. The total will be paid amongst team members in accordance to your contract and agreement. We appreciate the All In to Win efforts by our amazing Hirschbach drivers and are proud offer this industry leading quarterly incentives! Helpful Tips From Payroll Please remember, when scanning in paperwork you need a trip sheet for every load you do, if you have miles on the load you must scan at trip sheet. Never scan in more then one load under one envelope. Always remember to scan your receipts, if you don’t we will be unable to reimburse you. Cutoff deadlines for scanning your paperwork is midnight on Monday for company drivers and midnight on Tuesday for lease and owner operators. Please keep this in mind, scan in your paperwork right away, so we can pay you in a timely manner. I would like to take this time to thank all of you for all your hard work. We appreciate each and every one of you! Be safe! All in to win!! Patricia (Payroll) Off The Scale… More than 93% of children, under the age of 12, will go out trick-or-treating. Trucking has always been my passion. My lovely wife Morgan and I (and our two dogs – Maggie and Alfie) have been welcomed with open-arms at Hirschbach in our relocation from the Des Moines area. Hirschbach truly is a family. As the newest member of the Executive Team, my duties will include managing the claims unit which includes Lindsay, Erik, Kris and Shirley. With their hard work, this team will become the best -in-class in our industry --- without exception. My responsibilities will also include a myriad of other issues including insurance issues, real-estate matters, corporate planning, litigation and shipping contracts. I will also work closely with Terry Leahy and our Safety Department in reducing and mitigating accidents. For those of you interested in my background it all started in the trucking business. My father owned an over-the-road flatbed trucking company in the Des Moines area so my earliest memories involve the business we all love and cherish. My summers as a kid were spent on the farm and at the truck line as a grunt … sweeping the shop, hand-loading trailers at Firestone Tire, polishing chrome, etc. On my 18th birthday I got my CDL and started shagging trailers for dad and hauled fuel for a local construction company. With this CDL, I self-funded my education at Iowa State University where I received a degree in Transportation & Logistics (GO CYCLONES!). Interested in furthering my education I then went on to Drake University Law School in Des Moines where I received my law degree in 2002. For the past 13 years, I have been a civil trial lawyer for insurance companies. Clarence Darrow once said: “The only real lawyers are trial lawyers, and trial lawyers try cases to juries.” The rush of trying a jury trial is one of the most intoxicating things a person can ever encounter and it matures one beyond their years. During this time I litigated approximately 750 cases and I was lucky to try over 35 trials in front of a jury to verdict. I appeared before the Iowa Court of Appeals on 8 occasions. The cases ranged from simple property damage disputes all the way to wrongful death cases. Trucking litigation was also a focus. The best experience I had as a litigator came later in my career where I mentored younger litigators who were still cutting their teeth trying to learn how to successfully work-up and try a case. My first five weeks at Hirschbach were spent through an onboarding process which included time spent with each department including operations, safety, maintenance, accounting, etc. Learning the business from the ground-up was a top priority of Tom, Brad and AJ which I thank them for. This gave me a full flavor of the company and the people it takes to keep you all running out there. The highlights include 1) obtaining my driver certificate by going through driver training (incognito of course – think of the show Undercover Boss) and 2) an entire day at the shop in East Dubuque. Yes, Diana forced me get dirty in the pit changing the fluids and greasing an International. Mom used to tell me and my ornery brothers as teenagers whenever we left the house - “do the right thing and make good decisions”. This is the single most important request I will make of all of you drivers on the road in order to keep yourself and others around you safe. Thanks for all that you do and Keep the Shiny Side Up! Off The Scale… The Curse of the Billy Goat is a sports-related curse that was placed on the Chicago Cubs in 1945 when Billy Goat Tavern owner Billy Sianis was asked to leave a World Series game against the Detroit Tigers at the Cubs' home ballpark of Wrigley Field because his pet goat's odor was bothering other fans. He was outraged and declared, "Them Cubs, they ain't gonna win no more," which has been interpreted to mean that there would never be another World Series game won at Wrigley Field. The Cubs have not won a World Series since 1908. Interested in contributing to the Hirschbach Herald? Email [email protected]. 14 15 It Pays to be Safe! Hirschbach is rolling out a new incentive pay program for our mileage-paid drivers , both company and owner operators, effective October 1, 2015. This will replace the quarterly incentive pay program that previously existed, with a maximum annual payout of $4,000.00. The specifics of the new program are on the pay portal and Hirschbach App, but in short, the new program has 4 aspects to it: Performance (replacing existing performance) On-time performance (100% on-time will double the performance incentive) Accident-free accumulation. Superior fuel economy (for those drivers paying only a portion or none of the fuel cost). The essence is, a driver can more than double their current quarterly incentive potential by achieving these four elements. Here is the catch: You must demonstrate safety. Safety was already a component in the quarterly incentive, but now there is more incentive pay at stake. Under the old incentive program, we were normally paying out to about 15% of our drivers. What this means is that, based upon past experience and our lower mileage threshold on the performance incentive, about 90% of our driver base will be earning this incentive pay. What we would really like is for all of our drivers earning the most that they can. If our drivers are preventative accident-free, and have no inspection violations resulting in CSA points during the quarter, there is a lot of additional compensation available. Conversely, if you have any preventable accidents or CSA inspection violations, you will forfeit any quarterly incentive pay otherwise you would be eligible for. Safety pays; unsafe driving directly affects your earning capacity. To make this additional incentive pay, remember: Perform your daily pre-trip inspections Drive in a way that protects yourself and others Avoid unsafe actions, including speeding, unsafe lane changes. Wear your seatbelt at all times, and only use hands-free cell phones. Maintain legal and accurate e-logs. Don’t take unnecessary chances in performing your duties. By driving safely (and thus incurring fewer accident costs), the company can afford to share the savings with our drivers. With safe driving, everybody wins, and we all want to be All In to Win!
