purchase from foreign-owned
companies, we continue to
transfer America’s wealth to
those countries — wealth that
grows their economy instead
of ours.
America no longer
manufactures many of the
products we buy. When
shopping, do you buy
American sugar or the
cheaper imported package?
If you are interested in
buying American, Roger
Simmermaker’s book,
“How Americans Can Buy
American,” lists the products
and companies that are
American.
Second, I believe we rely
on publications such as
Consumers Reports to make
us feel like we are buying the
best product. We research the
product but not the impact
on our country when we buy
foreign.
Third, we need to have a
reason to buy American. The
answer is simply this: The
ownership of the company
determines where the profits
go, where most taxes are paid
and which national economy
benefits the most. When we
buy from foreign-owned
companies, we are providing
them the funds to buy our
land, factories and companies
with money that used to be
ours!

status, politicians that live
off of the people’s money,
and so on. These test should
include alcohol use, tobacco
use, prescription drug abuse,
illegal drug use. Then it will
be fair.

What is a Christian response to violence?
Scot Miller is director of adult ministries at Georgetown UMC and a recorded minister with the Society of Friends (Quakers).
When clergy ask the question of war, or preach about
peace, they anticipate response. Theologies of nonviolence
often are regarded as immoral.
Critics suggest an obligation to defend freedoms — cowards let others do the fighting — and pacifism is unpatriotic.
The big questions people raise are, what if everyone acted
like that, or what would you do if someone you love is in
danger?
Those are tough questions to answer, and the answers
often are inconsistent. In the face of overwhelming support
for Christian participation in war, is there a defense for
pacifism in Jesus’ name? I’ll begin with my understanding of
Christian participation.

WHAT IS ‘JUST WAR’?
For centuries, “just war” theory has been a component
of some, and is common among Catholic and Methodist
groups. Just war theory calls on Christians to protect those
who cannot defend themselves. War should never reclaim
lost land or resources, and never be used for revenge.
Consideration of an enemy’s grievances and authorization
by the populace initiating force is necessary. Violence may
only correct wrongs, and not be solely for economic gain.
Also, probability of success and proportionate force are
limits.
Whether or not criteria are met, just war theory does not
apply to nations. The United States is not obligated to consider just war limits. There are international conventions
concerning combat.
It is questionable whether Christian pacifists can hold
government accountable to any ethic that calls for voluntary suffering. Yet, many Christians understand Scripture to
command nonviolence.
Defense of innocents related to military conflict can quite
often be legitimized by governments and military officials.

court hearing Friday was to
be a simple arraignment for a
20-year-old client on a minorin-possession charge.
It took only minutes before
Millard was on his way to jail
for contempt, an order that left
lawyers with Millard’s law firm
crying foul.
Hudsonville District Court
Judge Ken Post sent the 29-year-
old Millard to jail about 11 a.m.
after he reportedly advised his
client not to answer questions
about past drug use.
Millard was out of jail in
about four hours, after an Ottawa County Circuit judge
granted an emergency stay.
But attorneys with the law
firm Miel & Carr say Post
stepped out of bounds and want
changes in his courtroom.
“The judge threw (Millard)
in jail for asserting his client’s
Fifth Amendment rights,” said
Josh Blanchard, one of Millard’s
co-workers at Miel & Carr. “It
seems inappropriate to me to

On Dec. 31, 1944, Wilbur
Revette went about the tradition as usual — a ring each

learned that one son had died
in battle.
The bell never rang in the
bar again after that New
Year’s Eve, and as the building
at 1013 N. Henry St. changed
ownership over the ensuing
years, the bell was lost.
“We didn’t think we’d ever
see that bell again,” said Ron
Revette, the only brother still
living.
But on Thanksgiving,
67 years after the last bell
chime, Ron Revette was able
to ring it again — the bell had
been found during the summer of 2010 as the building
was renovated in advance of
the grand opening of Latitude
43 Grill & Bar.

“That’s how we always
rang it — to get to tip that
bell a little bit and ring it …,”
he said, his voice trailing off
as memories of his family
seeped in.
