Not only can we look at what this new year holds, but we can see years into the future. You cannot put a price on that kind of security. We have begun the process of startup for our new Paint Shop, and in March construction will begin on our new Body Shop. Its completion will bring the possibility of increased line rates, which brings more jobs. More jobs = more of us! Another change for 2016 will be a new 598 GM Chairman, as our International Union has pilfered our Chairman (the second since I became President). I wish former Chairman Barry Campbell all the best. Barry joins a proud list of 598 members who have joined the International staff. Having that Flint Assembly connection in Detroit, can only be a positive for us. The interim Chairman will be Eric Welter, and Ed Pickett SUNDAY • 2:00 PM LOCAL UAW PROPERTY – ILLEGAL TO DUPLICATE 598 Rules FEBRUARY 21 JANUARY 2016 A New Chapter in 2016 •Barry Campbell’s Note •IUAW VP Cindy Estrada •White Shirt Day •Primary Election Day •Acting GM Shop Chair •Aramark Unit Chair (USPS 110770) 598 NOMINATIONS & ELECTIONS For the Office Listed Below... General Motors Shop Committee Chairman will function as Committee-at-Large, as they did a great job while then-Chairman Campbell was in Detroit on the National Negotiating team. The Election for Local 598 Chairman will be held Monday, February 8th, and will be a 24-hour election. Check the postings in the plant for details. In the next few months, many of our highest seniority members will be retiring. Of those, some have represented this membership for many years and embodied the spirit that is Local 598. I will be talking more about them in the following months. Finally, as I write this, I am preparing to go to Lansing with Local 598 Brothers and Sisters for the State of the State address, to protest the Governor’s criminal acts against the people of Flint. You have heard me in the past say that we as Union Members do “for” people because we can. Republicans and those who would try to break the unions do “to” people because they can. This is a perfect example. Hopefully, the people who have done these criminal acts against a community they thought would not have a voice will hear us loud and clear, and pay for what they have done. I am very proud of the way this Local stepped up for the Flint community, from the beginning, donating safe clean water, water filters, and money, in an effort to help during this crisis. In Solidarity ELECTION NOTICE 1. All members of Local 598, UAW, who have been in continuous good standing with Local 598 for one (1) year immediately prior to nomination are nominated. Election Committee, Local 598, UAW RAY GORNEY, President, Local 598, UAW 2 JANUARY 2016 UAW Local 598 – A Local Union with a Heart For all of your support... BENEFITS UPDATE Cindy Estrada, IUAW Vice President Many of you know by now that I have accepted an offer from UAW President Dennis Williams and VP Cindy Estrada to work in Detroit. I am very excited about the opportunity to be another voice at Solidarity House reminding them of the great things that this membership does every day and the challenges that my new assignment will bring. It is very hard to leave my Local 598 family, but I know that you are in good hands with our strong leadership team. Barry Campbell Eric Welter will be the acting Shop Chairman until an election can be held, and Eddie Pickett will assume Eric’s duties as Shop Committee-at -Large (until an election can be held for that position). I know that all of you will continue to do the great job you do each and every day for our customers. Thank you so much for all of the support you have given me throughout the years and for all of the well wishes I have received since announcing my new job. I cannot tell you what that means to me. Even though my job title is changing, I will always be a proud member of UAW Local 598, the best local union in the UAW! The future is bright; remember that our strength as a local union has always been in our commitment to our community and our solidarity. I know that this tradition will continue for many years to come. Solidarity forever! A new Legal Services Plan was negotiated under the recent UAW-GM, UAW-Ford and UAW-FCA contracts. The new Plan will be a multi-employer Plan and UAW represented members of GM, Ford and FCA will be eligible to participate in the Plan. Since it will be a new Plan, a Trust must be created, regulatory papers must be filed with the IRS and other steps must be taken before new cases can be opened. It is hoped that these steps can be completed within the next several months. Once opened, the new Plan will be able to complete “office legal work” such as the preparation of wills, power of attorneys, prenuptial agreements, real estate documents, as well as handle other uncontested family matters and provide advice and draft letters for many types of personal legal problems including credit reporting, probate matters, consumer matters and real estate matters. If something cannot be handled by the “office work benefit,” then the new Plan will be able to provide members with a low cost referral to a private attorney who has signed a contract with the new Plan to provide services to eligible UAW members at a substantially reduced rate. When the start-up date becomes known all local Unions and Retiree chapters will be provided with specific notice. Thank you, Cindy Estrada, IUAW Vice President Mark your Calendar for March 8, 2016 For the first time since 1992 Michigan Democrats and Republicans will vote together on Tuesday, March 9th for their preferred presidential nominee. Although the election will be held at the same time, each party will have separate ballots and voters will have to ask for either a Democratic or Republican ballot. Since 1992 Michigan Democrats had chosen to hold a caucus in place of a primary but voted to change the process for 2016. Democratic voters in Michigan will have 4 candidates to choose from: Hillary Clinton, Roque Rocky De La Fuente, Martin O’Malley and Bernie Sanders Republican voters will have a few more choices: Jeb Bush, Ben Carson, Chris Christie, Ted Cruz, Carly Fiorina, Lindsey Graham, Mike Huckabee, John Kasich, George Pataki, Paul Rand, Marco Rubio, Rick Santorum and Donald J .Trump Michigan will join with Hawaii, Idaho and Mississippi to hold votes or caucuses that day. Twenty-four states will have already made their choices before Michigan votes. The District of Columbia will be the last area to hold elections on June 14th. Presidential nominees for each party will be determined at the party’s convention. The Republican Convention will be held July 18-21 in Cleveland, Ohio and the Democratic Convention will follow July 25-28 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. If you wish to vote in the presidential primary and are not registered to vote, you must do so by February 8, 2016. UAW Local 598 White Shirt Day Thursday, February 11, 2016 Remember to wear your white shirts. Members in the plant wearing White Shirts will be served bean soup and apples at lunch. We are forever grateful for the courage of our Sit-downers and more determined than ever to continue fighting for dignity in the workplace and the rights of worker everywhere. The traditions of the original White Shirt Day is as follows: 1) Everyone must wear a white shirt or blouse 2) Your white shirt must not get dirtier than your boss's shirt 3) Safety and work rules must be followed. Our Retiree Chapter will be celebrating Thursday, February 11th at their Chapter Meeting. Region1D will observe White Shirt Day in honor of the 1937 Sit-down Strikers and their families February 11 at Local 659, 4549 Van Slyke Rd., beginning at 11:00 a.m. Following this celebration a commemorative lunch of bean soup, bread and apples will be served. UAW Local 598 – A Local Union with a Heart Acting SHOP COMMITTEE CHAIR’S REPORT By Eric Welter Remembering the Past, Looking to the Future Greetings Brothers and Sisters of Local 598, Contrary to what you might think, it is a very humbling experience to take over the leadership of this great Local. To take the responsibility for the membership, the reputation and the future is an honor. I have spent a lot of time thinking about the future; however, I also think it’s important to look back. The past holds many keys to success, mistakes and pitfalls to avoid. Looking back over my career, I have been on the Shop Committee for three Chairmen, have seen the good times, the struggles and a bright future. I was a Shop Committeeman during the “good old days,” until the banking crisis and eventual bankruptcy of GM. It started with the loss of a shift on the GMT900. Then, in an effort to save the plant, we negotiated a very difficult “competitive operating local agreement.” At this time, the company was whipsawing the truck plants. Quite frankly, I thought Flint would be closed. We were blessed to stay open but had to deal with the loss of my personal favorite, the GMT560 product line. Then, rollout of the 2009 Addendum to the National Agreement which changed our great Union forever. This was a very difficult time for the union, but this membership weathered the storm and began to prosper. The acquisition of the sequencing work and the expanded product portfolio with the LD pickup, the eventual building of the paint shop and announcement of a body shop investment. The strength of this Local Union to endure such hardships and turn General Motors Call-In System 2.Enter your 9-digit GMIN number (you cannot enter your Social Security number) 3.Choose an absence reason (1-7) from the list at right... 4.Enter pound sign (#) if correct or asterisk (*) if wrong. 5.Record your call-in sequence number 6.Stay on the line until you hear that your call has been successfully completed and recorded in GMTKS. 3 ARAMARK UNIT CHAIR’S REPORT By Debra Bruton Keeping this Ship Running that into important investments which secure our future comes from our people and their ability to stand together and build the best truck in the world. Looking ahead, we face a number of challenges in 2016. We will have a great deal of people movement over the next few months. We get to welcome 90 members transferring in on February 1, to free up the temporary workforce to facilitate the move to the new paint shop. In addition, we have a SAP retirement plan which will have us saying good-bye to long- standing members, followed by the ensuing special apps and additional people to repopulate the plant. We will be breaking ground on the new body shop in March, and start moving people to the new paint shop in April. The HD pickup has significant model changes in the fall, which bring its usual issues. We are currently working our way through implementation of the provisions of the 2015 National agreement including GMS, which has proven to be difficult. The plant is intending to run a lot of Saturdays this year. The schedule has not been announced but we are starting off with two in January, and they threw in a voluntary shift as well. As you can see, there is a lot of demand for Flint built trucks. This Local has plenty on its plate this year, but we will prosper and have extraordinary job security. I would like to take this an opportunity to thank Brother Campbell for his service to this membership and extend him best wishes on his new assignment. 1.Dial 1-800-222-8889 JANUARY 2016 Press 1 - Late Press 2 - Sick Press 3 - Sickness/ Accident in Family Press 4 - Car Trouble Press 5 - Injured Press 6 - Death in Family Press 7 - Personal Time Off Hi! I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday with family and friends. It is most definitely my favorite time of the year! Yes, even with all the stress. Now comes the new year and with it comes the problems of last year, yet unresolved and all the new challenges to come. I plan to face them head on! But first, congratulations to GM Chairman Barry Campbell on his International appointment. I am confident he will serve us well in his new position. Secondly, I think I need to recognize my Union brothers and sisters who don’t get the credit they deserve. For that I truly apologize. Each and every one of you play a part in keeping this ship running, and do a great job! So I would personally like to thank my brothers in high-low repair, my brothers and sisters in the paint shop (both the old and the new), and the maintenance brothers and sisters! Congrats Debra on your new career! Last, but not least, my sanitation brothers and sisters. I applaud you all. Each department has its own set of issues going on, whether it be that you are short staffed, the company bringing in subcontractors, temps, etc., you all have held your heads high and united in Solidarity! I am very proud of you all and I will work my hardest to resolve these issues. United we will STAND! In closing, my deepest condolences go out to our fallen brother’s (Doug Turner) family and friends. Doug was taken from us much too soon. In Solidarity. I would like to add my congratulations to Barry Campbell on his appointment to the International UAW. Best wishes on your new position. This year is already showing that it is going to be another very busy year, but an exciting one. We have already started our first fundraiser for the year and in just 2 weeks we will all get the opportunity to see our Local 598 President, VP and former Chairman Barry Campbell, along with other of our members, plunge into the freezing waters of Lake Fenton! This will be our third year participating in the Special Olympics Polar Plunge and donations are being accepted here at the hall and the Community Action Center. Online pledges can be made at www. firstgiving.com/team/311906. If you are interested in “jumping in” and helping us raise funds for Special Olympics, you can register online at the above web link or please contact me at the Hall at 238-4605. I will help you get set up. The event will be Saturday, February 6. Plunges will start at 1:00 p.m. at the Veteran of the Quarter David V. Garcia David V. Garcia is the recipient of the Berlanga Memorial Service Award. He served in the US Army from 1987-95 and earned the rank of Specialist. His MOS was 13fox-Fire Support Specialist. It was a very important and dangerous job during combat in Operation Desert Storm. He's traveled through the Middle East and Germany. David is proud of his deployment to Egypt and Turkey in support of Operation Bright Star '90. "I loved the military. It was a great alternative to the streets," David told me. And, "It's an honor to receive the Berlanga Memorial Service Award." David, on behalf of UAW Local 598, thank you for your service. Welcome home. In Solidarity, Veterans Committee Chair Mike Ruhl Fenton Moose Lodge. We have several avenues of communication to keep everyone informed about everything going on with your Union and in the plant. There is the plant paper, the “Truck News,” that is distributed weekly, along with the team meetings packets that every team leader is emailed. Your team leaders should be utilizing the weekly team meetings and packets to keep you up to date on our current events. Also, there is our social media, our website www.uawlocal598.org or our Facebook page, which is simply UAW Local 598. There is absolutely no sensible reason for our members to not be informed with what is going on here at Local 598 and we don’t want people missing out! Just a short FYI on some of GM’s plant hiring, many locations are going through a web site for people to apply. This website is www. gm.appone.com. Here you select type (either JANUARY 2016 5 plant production or parts distribution center), and in the next column you select a city and state where a plant is located. If that particular plant is hiring, you will be allowed to submit an online application. With the transition of our GM Chairman being appointed to Detroit brings us an election of a new Chairman. Please see the election notice (see front page) for details. This is of course just two of the many things starting off this busy year. Be sure to try to find pleasure in your days. Abraham Lincoln once said, “In the end, it's not the years in your life that count. It's the life in your years.” Take advantage of time. It goes so fast. One thing I am learning is that I don’t remember days as much as moments in the day. That being said, be conscious that your moments are memories in the making. Be Safe and God Bless. 6 JANUARY 2016 UAW Local 598 – A Local Union with a Heart C Retiree Report ongratulations by Janet Woodson, Retiree Chair The Officers, Staff and Members of Local 598 extend sincerest thanks and congratulations for the many years of dedicated service by these recent retirees.
