A Nite at the Races, High Point
Luncheon and Horseman's Awards
event was held in January and I want
to thank everyone involved that made
this a successful event for our
Region.A special thanks to Pat and
Bob Barton, Cindy and Dan Savage,
Debbie and Mark Himmel, Karlan
Downing, Karen Campbell and Steve
Buddin.
The turnout doing the day was light but
the judges and amateur panel did a
Margo Shallcross
great job fielding the many questions
Region 9 Director
from our attendees. Both Debbie
Fuentes, AHA Senior Director of
Customer Service and Registrar, and our own Dr. Karlan Downing
did outstanding presentations. Included in this Hand Gallop are list
of both the High Point and Horseman's Award recipients,
congratulations to all of you!
Our Board of Directors (BOD) discussed this event and we have
made a decision to shorten this program for 2015.We will have the
High Point Awards presented on Saturday night along with the Race
fundraiser and auction for our Youth Scholarship Program. The
daytime agenda will consist of our BOD meeting and later in the day
our delegate meeting. We feel this would allow our members to
come for one night instead of two and we can put our efforts into
one outstanding evening event.
At the Regional Championship Show this year, May 28-31, I will
have a donation area where you can drop off donated items of
clothing or tack that will be taken to some of the smaller shows to
give to people just starting.I want items that are clean and in

working condition.I am hoping this will help encourage someone that
is just getting involved to continue showing. Also some of these items
will be sent on to the Arabian Horse Gallery in Kentucky. They are
gathering show clothing for children to use in an interactive room
with model horses.
How can we as a Region reach out and help bring new members
into our bred? Here are a few of ideas that may get you started:
Take old horse books and magazines to your public library.
(Our library has a rack for free magazines.)
Pay for one individual to join your local club or just bring a
guest to your local club meeting or club show (adult or child.)
Designate an area at your local show where guests can sit in
the stands, put a sign up so they know this is a special place
for new people attending the show and have a
knowledgeable person there telling them what classes are
about and some of the criteria they are judged on. (This
should NOT be a place where any critique takes place but
rather a place for educating.)
Get a TAIL activity going in your club. Information on this
program can be found at the AHA website.

2014 Showmanship Report
By Jeanne Harford, Region 9 Equitation Chair
The show season is starting and the new addition to most show schedules
is Adult Showmanship!
2014 Shows with Adult Showmanship
Scottsdale is starting us off with offering Showmanship 19 & over.
At closing date, they had 22 entries and growing.
Region 9 has always been current with National trends. Our spring
local shows are following suit with the Cowtown Classic, Alamo Fiesta, & Lone Star Classic
holding Adult Showmanship classes in 2014.
Region 1, Region 4, Region 5, Region 7, Region 13, Region 14 will ALL be having Adult
Showmanship classes at their championship shows this year.
2014 U.S. & Canadian Nationals are slotted to have Adult Showmanship. Michele Pease
Paulsen reports these current details regarding U.S. Nationals:
The A & B sections will be Thursday Afternoon in the Pavilion after the halter classes
with the SF/F Friday afternoon in the Pavilion after halter.
The Western panel will be judging the classes.
Tack & Attire Guidelines
2013 Convention addressed several concerns and clarifications to Showmanship. Below is an
approved chart that will explain appointments for each style of presentation. This chart will
answer most questions that exhibitors/coaches/trainers may have in a concise manner.
Score Sheets
Mike Baker reports that there is a new scorecard being proposed for SMS this year which is
much more similar to trail. It is very similar to what is used in all other major breeds and will
allow better more accurate score. Since showmanship is a pattern class and conformation is
not considered - it should be based primarily on how well the maneuvers are completed. It
will be part of the new handbook which also has more clear definitions as to how to correctly
judge showmanship. It will still not be mandatory, but we will strongly encourage judges to
update their education and use the score cards at our shows. The table below is the most
updated version of the handbook - it does not yet have the new scorecard but discusses in
depth how scoring should be done with a major and minor fault point system. EVERY judge
should review this. SMS starts on page 112. http://www.arabianhorses.org/competitions
/j-s/docs/13_Equitation_Manual.pdf
The Showmanship Committee will be finishing the new scorecard in 2014 for use by 2015.
Note: It is very useful for exhibitors/trainers/coaches to examine these scorecards to better
understand what the judges are looking for and the points that are allocated.

CTAHA is ready to celebrate the Year of the Horse! Our Open Shows
are scheduled and ready ... ribbons and prizes are overflowing in our
office, Board members are excited for the new show season, and all four
fantastic judges are signed on. The dates, fun photos, and more
information can be found on our website: www.CTAHA.org.
We're also planning some educational clinics this spring, thanks to the
support and initiative of our local horse professionals. It's part of our club's mission to provide a
forum for education, fun, and competition; these clinics will help exhibitors learn and practice along
side friends in a relaxed and focused environment.
In addition, our rated show, the 38th Annual Lone Star Classic, is April 11-13, and we're pretty
excited that one of our most popular judges, Mr. Duane Esser, will be officiating this year's show
ring. Mr. Esser judged our show several years ago, and his decisions reflect a genuine fairness and
consideration toward all exhibitors, as well as demonstrating international-level expertise. He enjoys
our show, and appreciates the enthusiasm our kids and amateurs bring to the ring.
Last year was a good year in our Central Texas horse community, and we enjoyed seeing the
increase in local participation and renewed commitment from our horse friends in Central Texas. We
hope to reunite with every one of them in the spring show season, and make new friends, too. See
you at the in-gate!
Alamo Arabian Horse Association

Liarakos at 210-912-8679 for more information. You can check out our
website at AlamoArabians.org or our Facebook page, Alamo Arabian
Horse Association, for a list of purchased Buy-A-Classes.Even though it is
past the deadline, it is never too late to submit your entry (although late entry fee will apply) and be
sure to get your hotel reservations since this is Spring Break. We listened to your suggestions from
last year and have implemented a few of them - like a later start on Friday and Sunday to allow
more time to get ready. There will be Western Dressage, Adult Showmanship and an All-Breed,
Walk/Trot, Any Seat, 10 & Under. So, please come.Through your support, AAHA will be using the
proceeds to fund a Youth Scholarship and help provide financial support to send our delegates to
convention. We believe it is very important to have a voice at the National level and this horse show
helps to provide the funds necessary to make sure our members are represented well.
Region 9's January Event was an enjoyable time that allowed old horse friends throughout the region
to meet and visit again. Thanks to all those who worked hard to make this a successful event. The
Alamo Arabian Horse Association was well represented with 27 of our members at this
function.Several of our members won awards.
