Benefits of physical activity Participating in regular physical activity can halve your risk of developing many chronic illnesses and even substantially reduces your risk of premature death. If this isn’t enough to convince you that being active is a good move to make, maybe some of the other benefits will persuade you? You may have heard them all before but here are some of them again just in case you’ve forgotten: • Makes you feel happy • Helps you to maintain a healthy weight • Reduces stress • Increases confidence • Reduces high blood pressure • Reduces the risk of diabetes • Strengthens your bones to prevent fractures • Reduces lower back and joint pain • Helps you to sleep better • Reduces the risk of heart disease, stroke and kidney disease • Reduces your overall risk of cancer Don’t worry if you’ve missed out on all these benefits for years, it’s never too late to get active and start experiencing the benefits of leading an active life. Physical Activity in Richmond Aim for five a week To experience the health benefits of being physically active the recommended target for adults is a minimum of 30 minutes of moderate intensity aerobic activity on at least five days a week or 20 minutes of vigorous intensity aerobic activity on at least three days a week. You can also break down the 30 minutes into three ten-minute bursts of activity. Once you get into it, you might even want to exceed the target as the more exercise you do the more benefits there are to your health. How do I measure activity intensity Moderate and vigorous intensity activities will differ for individuals depending on their fitness level. You should be aiming for activities that increase your heart rate and breathing: about 5 or 6 on an intensity state of 0-10. As your fitness increases, the activities that are moderate intensity for you will change Use the scale on this page to judge how you feel when taking part in an activity, but don’t forget to refer back to the scale when the activities start to feel easier. Including physical activity as part of your everyday life is a great way to keep your heart healthy. If you’re not travelling too far, walking is the best form of transport. For those slightly longer local journeys, cycling is a cheap and quick way to get about town. Why not give it a try and see how you feel? 0 = SITTING Everyday activity Here are some simple ideas to help you, but you can come up with some of your own to fit with your lifestyle: • Take the stairs instead of the lift • Get off the bus three stops earlier and walk the rest of the way • Walk to the local shops • Gardening • Cycle to and from work • DIY tasks around the home • Take the dog for a walk • Get the vacuum out or clean the windows 1 = VERY GENTLE ACTIVITY 2 = VERY GENTLE ACTIVITY 3 = GENTLE ACTIVITY 4 = GENTLE ACTIVITY Noticeable increase in heart rate and breathing 5 = MODERATE INTENSITY 6 = MODERATE INTENSITY Large increase in heart rate and breathing 7 = VIGOROUS INTENSITY 8 = VIGOROUS INTENSITY 9 = VERY VIGOROUS INTENSITY 10 = ALL OUT MAXIMUM EFFORT • Get you heart beating with a brisk walk • Sweat away stress by taking up a sport • Spend quality time with the children or grandchildren playing games in the park • Beat the bulge with a workout at your local gym • Brighten your mood at a salsa dancing session USEFUL INFORMATION Visit ww.tfl.gov.uk for useful tips on walking and cycling in London, or find out the distance and calories burned for walking from one place to another at www.gmap-pedometer.com Physical Activity in Richmond 1 Green exercise Your borough offers a friendly, safe and green environment that makes being more active just that little bit easier to achieve. sophisticated check of your heart health. Aimed at adults in England aged 40 to 74, it checks your vascular/circulatory health and works out your risk of developing some of the most disabling – but preventable – illnesses. Crucially, your NHS Health Check can detect potential problems before they do real damage. Everyone is at risk of developing heart disease, stroke, diabetes, kidney disease and some forms of dementia. The good news is that these conditions can often be prevented. Your NHS Health Check will assess your risk of developing these health problems and give you personalised advice on how to reduce it. It’s free of charge, including any followup tests or appointments. HOW DO I GET AN NHS HEALTH CHECK? You may be able to book an appointment at your GP Surgery, or with one of our participating pharmacies, or at one of our Community Outreach events.
