by public security bureau. Gas powered scooter is also a high-speed vehicle. Since usually most of the scooters

your mobile phone at a telecommunication operator’s service office to activate the SIM card. Prepaid phone
cards are available in the convenience stores, mobile services halls and newsstands.
After you begin to use your mobile phone, you can make a change according to your preference and frequency

Postal Service:
The nearest post office is at the crossing of Guangzhong Road and North Zhongshan Road (Ⅰ), open from 7:00
to 17:30, providing all kinds of postal service, such as package post, express delivery, postal remittance, etc. If
you have too many packages to bring back to your country, you can mail them back. Take the cheapest sea
shipping as an example; it takes a month to East and Southeast Asia, and two to three month to Europe or
America. The shorter time it takes, the higher expense it will cost. Please consult the exact cost at the service
window.
1.4 Currency, bank and ATM
Bank notes circulating in China are respectively 100 Yuan, 50 Yuan, 20 Yuan, 10 Yuan, 5 Yuan, 2 Yuan, and 1
Yuan. Coins are 1 Yuan, 5 Jiao, and 1 Jiao.
Nowadays, most banks in China can do foreign currency transaction, including depositing and withdrawing
money, remittance, converting foreign currency into Chinese Yuan, and so on.
Bank of China offers a complete range of foreign currency services. There are two Banks of China near
Hongkou Campus; one is No. 2259, Sichuan Road (N) (on the right side of the main gate of Lu Xun Park), and
the other is No. 268, Yu Tian Road (on the rear side of Carrefour). On the right side of SISU Main Gate locates
an Industrial and Commercial Bank of China (ICBC). The address is No.566, Da Lian Road (W). If you need
open a bank account, please bring your passport, fill in “Application Form for Opening Personal Bank Account”,
and provide your address and contact number in Shanghai.
ATM is easily found on street in Shanghai. There is one in the lobby of SISU Guesthouse, where bank card of
most banks can be used (including offshore banks, such as Citybank, JCB). But if you withdraw money from
ATM of Bank A, using a bank card of Bank B, a certain amount of commission may be charged. For student
convenience and placed also in the lobby, a Foreign Currency Exchange Machine can be used to exchange
foreign currency in cash for CNY cash.
When you use offshore bank card, stay calm if transaction amount has been deducted from your bank but no
cash appears from ATM. Usually it is caused by internet disconnection between banks. In that case, first keep
your bank card and receipt, and don’t leave until someone else deposit or withdraw money on the same ATM
successfully. Then register immediately in the nearby corresponding bank of ATM. Normally the transaction
amount will be returned to the original account in about a month.
It is not recommended that students use ATM at a remote location late at night. When you enter code at the bank
counter or ATM, please be alert and make sure no suspicious person is peeking. Meanwhile, try to avoid
withdrawing a large amount of cash at one time.
1.5 Shopping
Supermarket:
There are lots of convenience stores which is open for 24 hours, as well as large supermarkets such as Carrefour,
E-mart. Daily necessities and food are available there.
Carrefour: No.560, Quyang Road; No. 388 West Jiangwan Road.
E-mart: No. 800, Quyang Road
Business district:
The nearest business district is on North Sichuan Road, where many department stores and restaurants can be
found. Besides, Wujiaochang business district is also a good choice. Of course, the most famous is still Nanjing
Road and Huaihai Road business district. If you want to buy some gifts with Chinese characteristics, you can go
to Yuyuan Garden and Chenghuang Temple
The shopping center near the campus is Hongkou Plaza: No. 388, West Jiangwan Road.
Book stores:
In the book store of Shanghai Foreign Language Education Press on the right side of SISU Main Gate,

commonly-used teaching materials and dictionaries can be bought. If you need books of other categories, you
can go to Shanghai Bookstore and Foreign Language Bookstore on Fuzhou Road near People’s Square.
1.6 Off-Campus Lodging and House Renting
If you plan to live off-campus by renting your own apartment, you may first consult housing agencies. In the
neighborhood, the average rent for one-room lodging is 1600 – 2000 yuan per month, for two-room lodging,
2500 – 3000 yuan per month, and for three-room lodging, 3500 – 4500 yuan per month. The rent, of course,
will differ according to the level of house decoration and the equipment of household appliances. Do note the
following tips:
1. You are entitled to check the spot before you settle the lease.
2. Make sure the contract you sign is a formal one validated by the housing agency. And it is best if the
contract is signed by your landlord himself/herself.
3. If there are broken or mal-functioning furniture or electric appliances in the house, it should be clarified in
the contract that these objects have been broken or mal-functioning before the tenant moves in. In the
meanwhile, you may ask the landlord for maintenance or repair service and elicit maintenance certification
which verifies the fact that maintenance has been completed before you move in.
4. Payment normally goes as follows: pay three months’ rent and one extra month’s amount of rent as
mortgage; or pay six months’ rent and two extra months’ amount of rent as mortgage. You may ask the
landlord to return your mortgage money on the day when you move out.
5. If disputes occur between you and your renter, turn to the housing agency for mediation.
6. Attach considerable importance to security when using gas and electric appliances.
A Flow Diagram for SISU International Students Registering Off-Campus Lodging
