Surrey Hills Neighbourhood Centre provides an

Surrey Hills Music Festival
Surrey Hills residents and neighbours are in for a treat with
this year’s Music Festival boasting a stellar lineup of quality
musicians performing music for every taste.
The festival is a free, fun event, being held this year from
1.00pm to 10.00pm on Saturday 15 November, kicking off
with a ticketed concert the evening prior. Local Union Road
Cafes are hosting artists and ensuring that the day is one to
be out and about, ending the winter bunkering down and
meeting new neighbours!

Activities
Creative Dance Programs
Have fun with movement and music in this popular class run by our experienced dance and yoga teacher, Karen. Moving
the body with inspiring music, children are encouraged to think creatively, explore their surroundings and use their
imagination to express themselves. Come and try a class for $14. Classes start week beginning 13 October, cost: $108.

Creative Pursuits
Community Charity Knitting Group
Join this volunteer community knitting group
led by an experienced knitter. The group
supports KOGO (www.knitonegiveone.org)
making items for various charities. Enjoy a
coffee and a chat.
Weekly starting 6 October, Mondays 7 – 9pm,
free with membership.
Italian: Christmas treats with Enza
A hands-on experience in our Cottage kitchen
focussing on Italian culture, traditional cooking
techniques and terms - with lots of laughter
and engaging conversation in Italian and
English. Recipes to made are: Cannoli Shells
and filled some with Ricotta and some with
Custard; Torrone Siciliano - Toffee Almonds;
Cucciddati - Biscuits with Figs Marinated in
Brandy; Bocconcini all’Arancia - Orange little
balls Includes nibbles and bubbly.
Tuesday 11 November, 7pm - 10.30pm, cost
$65.
Music Appreciation Program *NEW*
Walk through the musical ages, listening to
the great pieces of various eras, while learning
the elements of music. No previous musical
knowledge is necessary.
Starts Wednesday 8 Oct, 1pm - 2.30pm, cost
$150 for 10 weeks.
Painting
Our popular art classes are taught by Velda,
and explore a variety of techniques. Classes
cater for all levels of abilities.
Acrylics: starting Monday 6 October,
1pm – 3pm, cost $144, 9 weeks.
Watercolour: starting Wednesday 8 October,
10am – 12pm OR 1 – 3pm Cost: $160 for 10
weeks

General Interest : Leisure & Learning
Book Clubs
Share your pleasure of reading with other like
minded people. Meet on 4th Tuesday of the
month, 1.30 – 3.30pm OR 7 – 8.30pm. Dates:

Women’s discussion and excursion group.

Heritage Collection
Join this group to work on our heritage
collection. Newcomers welcome. The
Collection may be viewed on Mondays or by
appointment. Group meets Mondays, 10am3pm. Free with membership.
Historical Society
Group meets on 3rd Tuesday of the month,
8-10pm to learn about various local themes.
Visitors most welcome.

Stitch and Chat
Bring your sewing project along and enjoy a
shared afternoon tea with this friendly group.

Memoir Writing
Be inspired to start, plan, or progress your
memoir writing in a small, supportive group.
2nd & 4th Tuesdays, starting 14 October,

Sushi Party Night *NEW*
Learn how to make sushi rice and have
fun making your own sushi rolls. Various
selections.

iPad Classes
Beginners class for those new to iPads and
wanting to learn the basics of using an iPad.
Extension class will cover learning how to
personalise your iPad settings, how to manage
& download Apps, & a basic understanding of
the main applications.

Playgroups – Parent Led
Playgroup is held in a large sunny room with a fantastic secure outdoor area. A great way to make new friends
locally. Come and join in one of our popular playgroups. Limited vacancies.

Italian Conversation

This regular group meets on the 1st, 3rd and 5th
Tuesdays of the month.

Mah Jong
Join our enthusiastic group and experience the
challenges of this Chinese game.

Social Table Tennis

Active Living 55 Plus
A friendly, sociable class aimed at fall prevention, flexibility and core stability.

Bike Riding Groups
Our five bike riding groups are very popular and offer a mix of ride levels. We have vacancies
in some groups. Contact us to join, or start a new group. Free with SHNC membership.

Laughter Club
Join this friendly group and laugh your way to improved physical and emotional wellbeing.

Introduction To Mindfulness
This course helps you learn practices to assist you in living in the present, being less caught
up in past or future worries, and coping better with everyday stress.
8 weeks starting 9 October, Thursdays, 7.15 – 8.15pm, cost $120.
Staying Mindful *NEW*
This course aims to reconnect you to Mindfulnesss or deepen your experience
6 weeks starting 23 October, Thursdays, 6– 6:45pm, cost $90.
Pilates
This class focuses on building strength and improving flexibility and agility. Class suitable for
all ages and abilities.
Weekly starting 6 October, Mondays, 10 – 11am, cost $112.50 for 9 weeks.
Qi Gong
Gently heal your body, improve clarity of mind and enhance your creative spirit. Suitable for
all ages and physical abilities.
Weekly starting 8 October, Wednesdays, 10 – 11.15am, cost $8 per session.
Strength Training
Conducted by experienced instructors, exercise core muscles using weights, dumbbells etc.
Suitable for all ages. Sessions: Mon, Wed & Fri 8.15 – 9.15am Tue & Thur, 6 – 7pm, and
7.15 – 8.15pm Tue & Fri 12.30 – 1.30pm Starts week commencing 6 October. Cost is $45
for over 65 years and $65 if under 65 years for a 10 week term. $40.50/$58.50 for 9 week term.
Tai Chi
Relax the body and focus the mind in gentle exercise. Suitable for all ages. Self directed
sessions: Tue,Thurs, Fri, & Sun, 8.15 – 9am. (Instructor-led on Thu). Starting 7 October, cost per
term is $23 for a single weekly session or $40 for multiple sessions, 10 weeks.
Tai Chi Instruction Class led by experienced tutor. Wednesday 8.50 -9.50am, starts 8 October,
$105 for 10 weeks.
Tai Chi Group
Walking Groups
Enjoy a medium paced walk around the Neighbourhood. Stop for a coffee along the way!
Weekly, Mondays starting 6 October 9 – 10.30am or Fridays starting 10 October
8.30 – 10am. Free with SHNC membership.
Yoga Classes
Bring balance and harmony to the mind, body and spirit through yoga postures and
breathing techniques. For all ages and abilities.
Weekly sessions Monday 13 October, 7 – 8pm, $112, Wednesdays 15 October 5.45 – 6.45pm
or 7 – 8pm, Cost $126, 9 weeks, or Thursday 16 October 9.30 - 10.45am. Cost $112, 8weeks.
Community, Social and Volunteer Activities
“Blokes in the Kitchen” Cooking with John
A popular group for older men needing cooking skills as a carer, or needing to be self-sufficient. Enjoy lunch together and take home
your produce. Tuesday mornings. Please contact the Office for further details.
Drop in Morning Tea
Newcomers are always welcome to this friendly get together in the Cottage Kitchen. Come into the office, and we will take you over
and introduce you to some of the regulars. Weekly, starting Monday 6 October, 9.30 – 11.30am, cost: $3 per session.
Drumming Circle for All Abilities
A great community experience, inclusive of people with disabilities. Skilled facilitator, Kathy, ensures everyone feels welcome.

Participants from EDAR look after the garden at the Surrey Hills Neighbourhood Centre.
Men’s Discussion Group
Come and join this engaging group to share your views about current events or other topics over morning tea.
Fortnightly on Fridays, starting 10 October, 9.30 - 11.30am, cost: $4 per session.
Music Festival Volunteers
Join a group of 100 plus volunteers to help coordinate the exciting annual Surrey Hills Music Festival. Volunteers will help out in the
lead up or at the main events of 14 & 15 November. Please register your interest with the office. See the front page for more Festival
information.
Venue Hire
Fees and Enrolments
Surrey Hills Neighbourhood Centre has two
venues available for hire.
Class fees must be paid in full at the time of booking. Course times and classes
are correct at the time of printing and are subject to occasional changes at the
discretion of management.
The Chandler Room is a large, light-filled
octagonal room with a kitchen and fully
fenced, grassed outdoor area.
Memberships
The Cottage facing Bedford Avenue is a
beautiful heritage building with a medium
sized room, one smaller room and a kitchen
opening onto an alfresco area.
Available for:
Parties - children’s parties and parties for
adults of all ages!
Lunches/afternoon teas/dinners/meetings/
workshops and seminars.
All facilities are wheelchair accessible.
People who participate in programs at the Neighbourhood Centre are required to
be members of SHNC. The membership fee contributes to the day to day running
costs of the Centre, administration, overheads and other consumables. The
membership fee is $15 for the calendar year.
