•Candle (non scented works best)

•Madeira Rayon embroidery thread as noted above
•Stencil cutter heat tool
•Permanent spray adhesive for crafts
•Clear plastic wrap from the kitchen aisle
Read all instructions before beginning.
Note: all seam allowances are ¼" unless otherwise stated.
INSTRUCTIONS:
1. Prepare fabrics for the table runner center panel.
•To maintain a straight grain line, snip though the edge of the fabric at the desired measurement. Draw a single crosswise (weft)
thread out of the width of the fabric. The removal of one thread gives a visible cutting line.
draw crosswise thread
•Remove selvage edges from maize/ivory linen. Cut one 9½" × 46¼" crosswise rectangle.
9½"
Width of fabric
•Remove selvage edges from natural linen. Cut one 9½" × 46¼" crosswise rectangle.
•Meet right sides of the rectangles together, aligning long cut edges. Stitch along one long side with a ¼" seam allowance.
•Press seam flat to set the stitches, then press the seam allowances open.
2. Embroider and prepare the center panel.
•Embroider the table runner. The layout guide on page 5 indicates which designs were used and how the designs were modified
(rotated and mirror imaged).
•Embroider the length of the seamed panels first, stitching the center design first then additional designs working from the center
towards the ends.
•Determine the center of the table runner and mark with an erasable fabric pen or pencil.
•Hoop water activated adhesive tear-away stabilizer in a 5" × 7" or larger hoop.
•Use a damp sponge to moisten the surface of the stabilizer so that it becomes tacky—use only enough water to make slightly tacky.
Position the seam of the center panel over the stabilizer aligning the marked center with the center markings of the hoop
and embroider.
•Continue embroidering the designs along the length of the seamed panels, rehooping stabilizer as needed.
•Remove all excess stabilizer when embroidery is complete. Press the embroidered panel, right side down, on a padded pressing
surface. Remove any markings that you may have made before pressing the embroidered panel, as heat can permanently set marks.
•Trim the panel to a final width of 17¾" (8⅞" from the center seam on both halves of the center panel).
3. Create an all-in-one backing with mitered borders using our adapted “Mitering Magic” technique for a hemmed single
mitered corner.
Continued on page 3
•Cut the backing 1¾" larger than the embroidered center panel on all four sides. Or, trim the center panel shorter, if needed to
allow 1¾" of backing panel to extend beyond all four sides of center panel.
•Starch the backing fabric.
•Optional: Before sewing the miters, cut fusible interfacing into 1¼" wide strips. Fuse the strips onto the wrong side of the back/
border fabric aligned ½" from the outer cut edges of the back/border fabric. This will prevent “show through” of darker handkerchief
linen in the border/hem area.
1¼" fusible inerfacing strips

•Clean finish outer edges by turning ½" to the wrong side of the backing and pressing. Don’t worry about the excess fabric in the
corners, as it will be trimmed off when the corner is mitered.
Turn in ½"

•Shape mitered corners.
Measure and mark twice the hem width from each side of the corner.
(For example, with this 1¼" hem, mark 2½" on each side of the corner.)

•Place a strip of transparent or translucent tape on the wrong side of the fabric between the two marks, extending tape at each edge.

•Fold the corner to a point, right sides together, aligning the marks and the tape.

•Stitch from mark to mark, following the tape edge.

•Remove the tape; trim the seam to ¼".

•Turn corner right side out, pressing a 1¼" hem to the front. Repeat as needed to miter all corners.

•Tuck the embroidered panel under the mitered borders. Adjust the position of the panel until embroidery is centered within the
border. Mark for placement of end embroidery, then remove panel to add embroidery.
•Embroider both ends using the same techniques as the length of the seamed panels, rehooping stabilizer as needed.
•Remove stabilizer and reassemble. Pin layers together.
•Stitch the border/hem in place through all layers. A blanket stitch of 1.5 width and 3.5 length works well.

EMBROIDERED CANDLE INSTRUCTIONS:
1. Select a suitable base fabric and appropriate thread.
•The base fabric must be a synthetic fiber that melts when heated with the stencil cutter; for example, a nylon or polyester organza
would work well. Test the fabric to ensure that it melts when heated with the stencil cutter.
•Choose a natural fiber thread such as rayon that will not be affected by the heat. Polyester or other synthetic threads melt when heat
is applied, just as the synthetic base fabric does.
2. Stabilize the base fabric.
•Back the organza base fabric with a wash-away non-woven stabilizer and hoop. Select the embroidery design (we used design #
CFC112) and embroider.
3. Dissolve wash-away stabilizer.
•Remove the embroidery from the hoop. Cut away excess wash-away non-woven stabilizer.
•Rinse under running water to remove the remaining stabilizer; lay flat to dry.
•Once dry, press the embroidery design from the back side with a cool iron and a press cloth to flatten the design if required.
4. Trim around embroidery to create a free standing embroidered motif.
•Use the stencil cutter to melt away the organza from the edges of the embroidery. The heated tip of the tool melts the
synthetic fibers.
5. Adhere free standing embroidered motif to candle.
•In a well ventilated area, lay out newspaper to protect your surface from overspray.
•Place the free standing embroidered motif right side down on newspaper.
•Following the manufacturer’s instructions, spray the permanent spray adhesive for crafts onto the back of the free standing
embroidered motif.
•Quickly adhere to the candle, taking care to position straight and centered.
•Wrap tightly with clear plastic wrap and allow to dry.
•Unwrap carefully and enjoy.
