OUR RACE PROGRESS – ARE WE LEADERS?
Last month we made our first pit stop in our race in pursuit of providing service to others. How is your
club progress in the race? During your pit stop did you access your progress in attaining your club goals
for this current Lions year? Has your club identified three service projects for this year? The clubs that
will be winners at the end of the race will be those that plan and set goals to achieve and monitor their
progress in attaining their goals.

We are quickly approaching the Thanksgiving and Christmas seasons. Many clubs at that time of year
furnish food baskets and meals to families who are in need of assistance. This is an excellent service
project in which clubs can assist in providing needed service in their communities. If your club is not
involved in providing some type of service in the geographical area served by your club I urge you to
consider providing this service or something similar to those in need.
Each of the Zones in our District has completed their first Zone Advisory meetings of the current Lions
year. These meetings provide an opportunity for clubs to share information on activities in their clubs
and discuss ideas to improve their club visibility in their communities. If your club is going to be a leader
in our race club representatives need to attend and actively participate in these meetings. Discussion
items at a Zone meeting can provide additional help to clubs in pursuit of a successful year.
I hope to be able to acknowledge and congratulate all District clubs in the “Winners Circle” at the
completion of this year. If your club is behind in the race it’s not too late to begin racing in pursuit of
the award every club should be striving for, a 2012-2013 Club Excellence Award.
NEWS FROM INTERNATIONAL PRESIDENT

In my travels to the area forums I have had a chance to visit with many of you about things I would
like you to consider doing or accomplishing during your year. I want all of our clubs to be excellent
clubs. My formula for excellence: Dedication + Preparation + Team work = excellence.
The first thing is teamwork. Are you getting all or most of your club involved in your service projects?
Isn't it more fun and productive to have 20 Lions working a service project as opposed to just two or
three? With more Lions involved the work becomes much easier for all and you have more Lions
expertise to draw upon. So get your Lions engaged in your club activities.
Second, my goal for all of our clubs this year is to achieve excellence. I want each of your clubs to
achieve the club excellence award. It is a great roadmap to success! Take a look on the LCI Web site
to get started. Make it your goal to pay your club bills on time, submit your reports on time, do at
least three service projects and advertise them in your local media, make a contribution to LCIF, have
a net growth in membership for the year (so if you started the year with 25 members by the year end
you need to have at least 26 members), attend zone meetings, have your key officers attend officers
training, and make sure your secretary files the PU 101 report on time next spring. With dedication,
preparation and team work, every club can be on track to achieve the Club Excellence Award. Your
club will receive a nice banner patch and you will receive a nice lapel pin recognizing you as a Club
Excellence President.
Third - get your club involved in the Reading Action Program - RAP. Twenty-Six percent of the
world's population is considered illiterate - unable to write their name or read as well as a 10 year old
child. This problem not only exists in developing countries but developed countries as well. In my own
country - the USA - one out of seven is considered to be illiterate by the aforementioned definition.
Go to LCI's Web site and take a look at the suggested ways your club can get involved in the RAP
program.

From Your District Governor - DG John Woodside
The first quarter of my year serving as your District Governor has passed and I’d like to thank all the Lions of our District for their support and
assistance when requested. The results of that quarter are now available and I’d like to share some of the report results with you, the Lions of
District 13D.
Naturally, the first areas I looked at are those that reflect the progress made by our District in pursuit of my District Governor goals – specifically
those that address new members and membership retention. According to Lions Clubs International (LCI) reports, our District gained 70 new
members in the first quarter and dropped 84 members for a net loss of 14 members. Congratulations to those clubs that have added new members. We still have not, however, identified the cause(s) of controllable losses. I urge every club to investigate why members leave their club so,
if it due to a correctable problem, the club can discuss the problem and resolve it if possible. I’m asking clubs to evaluate your current members,
contact and address reasons why members may not be active, and work to resolve reasons why members leave our clubs. Retention of our current members should be a priority in every club; just as increasing our membership through new members is also a priority.
The above membership members reflect statistics compiled by LCI from reports submitted from our District clubs. They reflect reports received
through September, 2012. Reports received on or after October 1, 2012 are not included in the quarterly results if a club report was filed after
the end of the quarter. I urge all clubs to submit their Club Membership Reports and Club Activities Reports monthly as required.
Our annual Ohio Lions Winter Retreat is quickly approaching. It will occur on January 18, 19 and 20, 2013 at Salt Fork State Park Resort near
Cambridge, Ohio. I’m recommending that District Lions consider attending this Retreat. The event is a combination of great Forums, fun, fellowship and relaxation. If you’ve never attended a Winter Retreat in the past I believe, by attending, you will enjoy yourself. Full registrations received by December 1, 2012 receive a discounted price.
I continue to encourage clubs that have not scheduled a date for my visitation to their club to do so soon. Currently I have made or scheduled
visitations to 30 of our 53 District clubs. I would appreciate it if those clubs who have not scheduled a visitation would contact me soon.
Remember, "We Serve" is not only our Motto – it is our commitment.

From Your First Vice Governor - FVDG Tom Zickefoose
This month was not as busy as last month but I’m still doing visits and promoting Lionism in our District. I attended the Zone 5 meeting and
visited the Niles Lions, the Cortland Lions, and the Warren Lions. Lion Marian and I went to District Tail Twister Night at Don Poncho’s in Alliance There was a lot of fun going on at that place let my tell you!!!
As we go through the rest of 2012, let’s all try to bring in one name of a prospective member. Have your Membership Chairperson contact
them and invite then to a meeting to see if they would like to be part of this great organization. Adding new members help us make our communities a better place to live.
I would like to congratulate the Girard Lions on having their first annual food drive for the Second Harvest Food Bank. These dedicated Lions
collected over 640 pounds of food to help feed hungry people in our valley so no one goes hungry.

Pit Stops
To make sure your club achieves the goals you set out for them to achieve I have instituted four quarterly pit stops this year - one every three
months. Just like in the INDY 500 auto race when a race car needs to come in periodically to receive new tires, a fresh tank of gas, and to have
the engine tweaked to make sure it is running competitively - your club needs to stop periodically and have a pit stop to make sure everything is
running smoothly. Gather your fellow officers and check to see if you are on pace to achieve the goals you set out to achieve. If not decide
what you need to do to get back on pace to achieve those goals. Don't wait until June 1st and realize you did not come close to achieving you
goals - take a pit stop NOW and make sure you are on pace to have an excellent year.

From Your Second Vice Governor - SVDG Barb Sorkin
Hello Lions of 13-D
During the month of October I have visited the following clubs, Calcutta, Wellsville, East Liverpool and New Waterford. As I traveled Route 11
the trees were just beautiful fall colors. I apparently picked just the right week to travel to the southern part of the District. Lions Turner and
Paulus joined me with these visitations.
If you did not attend the District Tail Twister Night you missed a great evening. What fun we had. Then we all had to figure out how we were
going to get all that stuff into our cars to get home. Lion Jim Harshman did a great job as usual. I hope to bake some bread in the stoneware dish
that I received. So fellow Lions, when the District Tail Twisting Night comes next year, make sure that you attend.
Looking forward to seeing the rest of the Lions at their club meeting, so if you are in Region 2, please call me to schedule a visit.

Park. The Lions were raising awareness for the services that
they provide to the community.
The Tuslaw Lions welcomed District Governor John Woodside to their meeting held on October 25th. Tuslaw
Lions were very proud to have DG John induct a new member into the club. Their ‘Over The Hill Gang’ takes
care of the club house and the grounds. They do a fantastic job! Presently they are working on getting the siding
finished on the storage building before the weather gets bad.

Twister Night. It was a wonderful event and a great time was had by all! Thanks also to Lion Jim’s wife Wanda,
Zone 6 Chair Elva Summers and Lion Bill Shehy, District Tail Twister.
CC David and I hope that all the hard working Lions of 13-D have a blessed Thanksgiving Holiday. WE SERVE
isn’t just a motto, it’s who the Lions are. The efforts of many 13-D Lions will make this Thanksgiving special for
those in need.

USA/CANADA LEADERSHIP FORUM 2012
The 36th Annual USA/Canada Leadership Forum in
Tampa Bay is now history.
This year’s forum was ranked as one of the best of
the 36 with over 70 seminars and workshops. We
were entertained, inspired, and educated with messages from a great lineup of mealtime speakers.
Many of the speakers were also presenters in the
seminars. International President Wayne Madden
was also there and gave an impressive speech as well
as presenting a workshop. I took a very informative
workshop “Providing Important Perspectives for
Today’s Lions” presented by four Past International
Presidents.
Tampa Bay is a beautiful city with a revived water
front. The hotels and convention center were very
modern and well kept. Trolleys were conveniently
available for transportation through out the city.
Next year’s forum will be September 19, 2013
through September 21, 2013 in Overland Park, Kansas. Save the date!

The Tuslaw Lions will have their annual Thanksgiving Dinner at the Lions Clubhouse. The members will make and bring all the many

The Tuslaw Lions will be taking their Lions Club Train to the 58th Annual Holiday Parade in Massillon. The members will be passengers
wearing red Santa hats.

JANUARY 18 - 20, 2013 WINTER RETREAT 2013 SALT FORK STATE PARK RESTORT
It may be warm outside but it’s time to think winter. ….Winter Retreat that is!!
Be sure to register for the 2013 Early Winter Retreat. Cost is $115 paid per person until
December 1st. December 2nd through December 31st the registration fee increases to $130.
Hotel reservations can be made by calling Salt Fork directly and asking for the Ohio Lions rate
($75 + tax) 1-740-435-9000 by November 30th. After Nov. 30 the room rate may increase.
The Resort only has 96 rooms so book early.
MARCH 15-17, 2013 - 13-D CONVENTION at McKINLEY GRAND HOTEL in CANTON
Get dressed to cruise on the USS Woodside on Friday night. There will games, dancing and a lot of fun.

MAY 17 - 19 - OHIO LIONS STATE CONVENTION
The State Convention will be held at the Embassy Suites in Dublin, Ohio. The Lions from District J will
be hosting the convention and are working hard to plan a great weekend of fellowship and learning for
the Ohio Lions.
