Folie 1 - A Shaded View on Fashion Film
On the occasion of the sixth installment of "A Shaded View on
Fashion Film," the Business of Fashion sat down with the
festival’s founder, Diane Pernet, to discuss the state of the
medium.
“I‟m really happy when films touch on broader issues that
affect everyone,” like the winner of last year‟s ASVOFF, the
humorous animated “Headpieces for Peace” by Jessica
Mitrani, which deals with serious themes like social
consciousness, fashion, politics and religion, continued
Pernet. “It shows that a fashion film doesn‟t have to be just
about a pretty dress or beautiful clothes. It can go a bit further.
Like Manish Arora‟s film this year, it takes you somewhere and
gives you something.” BoF – The Business of Fashion

ASVOFF's GRAND PRIX went to Bharat Sikka and

as BEST EMERGING TALENT PRIZE awarded by

PARIS, Tuesday, 22 October 2013
In a quest to explore the themes of fashion, style and beauty through the medium of the moving
image, ASVOFF founder Diane Pernet is often credited with pioneering and nurturing the fashion film
genre, pushing its boundaries forward, matchmaking creative collaborators and presenting commercial
opportunities for talent across both industries. For instance, in collaboration with this edition’s official
partner RENAULT, ASVOFF 6 commissioned and presented a powerful film directed by artist Marcus
Tomlinson featuring the electric car model ZOE.
Filling the Centre Pompidou's vast Cinema 1 to the rafters, Diane Pernet presented the sixth edition of
her festival A Shaded View On Fashion Film (ASVOFF) over the weekend (11th-13th October). The
standing-room-only event opened the evening of October 11th with an emotionally-charged group of
winning filmmakers paying tribute to their many talented collaborators and to ASVOFF for
encouraging, arousing and sometimes even inflaming them to continue to push their creative limits.
Seasoned filmmakers like Ellen von Unwerth (whose film 'SISTER ACT' won the BEAUTY PRIZE
celebrating make-up artist Vicky Steckel) awarded by Make Up Forever along with a make up kit
worth 1,000 Euros, paid tribute to ASVOFF founder Diane Pernet's uncompromising vision and her
leading position in the fashion film movement. And several young directors spoke of ASVOFF’s rise
as well as its role in their careers:
An incredibly diverse programme provided nonstop stimulation for spectators on Saturday and Sunday
with debuts, exclusives and vintage film screenings, celebrity appearances from the likes of actor
Julien Landais, who also served as master of ceremonies, and inspiring presentations by industry
heavyweights such as Christophe Lemaire, Michele Lamy, Philip Fimmano and Polimoda's Linda
Loppa– not to mention an enchanting live music session each day. Six filmmakers walked away with
nine trophies for their fashion films, which were awarded prizes over the three-day event in Paris.
"Beyond honoured...," said a visibly moved Matt Lambert who won BEST ART DIRECTION PRIZE
and BEST STYLING for his film 'BFC LONDON COLLECTIONS: MEN FW13'. "It's my first time
showing here and attending ASVOFF, so it's even more overwhelming to hear that our film has won
this award. I'm so humbled to be welcomed with such warm open arms. Just to be shortlisted among
so many amazingly talented people – people who I've been looking up to even before the start my
career is surreal. But it's also a valuable affirmation because my collaborations with the world of
fashion are just beginning.“
An esteemed panel of directors, producers, fashion
designers, film festival directors, screenwriters, editors,
curators, fashion historians, architects, photographers
and entertainment industry veterans made up the
ASVOFF 6 jury, who are all leading and influential
figures such as: Valerie Steele (curator at the Museum
at the Fashion Institute of Technology, NY), curator and
trend guru Li Edelkoort , author Laura Albert (aka J T
Leroy), Linda Loppa (Polimoda), Nicolas Girard
Deltruc (executive director of the Festival du Nouveau
Cinema Montreal), Laurens Van den Acker (head of
Renault Design), Antoaneta Metchanova (creative
director of the luxury communication agency Publicis
133), Anja Aronowsky Cronberg (editor-in-chief of the
renowned publication Vestoj) and many more. (A
complete list of the jury is on the last page of this

In the ever-growing succession of lauded film figures whom ASVOFF pays
homage to each year (such as William Klein in 2012 and Mike Figgis in 2011),
this year's edition of ASVOFF made a special tribute to film industry legend
Larry Clark, who has inspired generations of the most creative photographers,
stylists, designers and filmmakers; ranging from his milestone movie 'Kids' to his
photographic book 'Tulsa' to his latest film 'Marfa Girl' which screened at
ASVOFF 6. And as a tribute to the multi-talented and prolific image-maker
Serge Lutens, ASVOFF offered audiences rare access to his early work by
projecting 'Les Stars', his tantalizing 16-minute film which had not been shown
since the late 1970s when it was presented at Cannes’ Quinzaine des
Réalisateurs.
Fashion film's many sub-genres were also celebrated for the first time this
edition and the thread of "world cinema fashion film" wove together a
programme of submissions from a record number of 62 countries from every
inhabited continent on the planet. A special segment called simply Films from
China was presented by Shaway Yeh of Modern Weekly magazine. A Fetish
Film selection from the last Mode Biennale Arnhem (M°BA) also energized the
crowds.

Diane Pernet is a world-renowned fashion critic and video journalist based in Paris.
Previously a photographer and fashion designer, she now acts as documentary filmmaker,
talent scout and fashion blogger on her site, A SHADED VIEW ON FASHION
(www.asvof.com), which since its inception in 2005 has become a ‘must-read’ in fashion
and creative industry circles. Pernet was recognised in 2008 for being a pioneer in digital
media when she was chosen as one of three influential global bloggers to take part in a
panel celebrating a seminal fashion exhibition at New York’s venerated Metropolitan
Museum of Art. As one of the most recognisable faces in fashion, she has also been
captured on the other side of the movie camera through cameo appearances in Robert
Altman’s film, „Prêt-à-Porter‟ and in Roman Polanski’s „The Ninth Gate‟. While
contributing to some of the most highly-acclaimed fashion magazines and pioneering
online media, Pernet launched ASVOFF in 2008. As the founder of the world’s first
film festival dedicated to fashion, style and beauty, she is widely considered to have
incubated the ‘fashion film’ from its infancy to the popular genre that it is becoming
today. Pernet is not only credited with providing the first platform of its kind for the
‘fashion film’ genre to evolve and flourish, but also with helping ‘fashion film’ fulfil many of
its early promises which were to revolutionize the fashion industry, breathe life into static
photography, offer a new outlet to filmmakers – and to trigger several important
commercial, business and digital media opportunities across the fashion and movie
industries.
