HEALTHY PET COMMUNITIES - Michigan Humane Society
President’s Notes
Thoughts From
I
would like to begin by
saying, “THANK YOU,”
to all of our loyal supporters! Despite the economy
and record unemployment,
it is abundantly clear that
animals hold a special place
in the hearts of many here
in our community. Your
generous support has meant
that the Michigan Humane
Society was able to continue
to provide our vast array of
services to tens of thousands
of animals in 2009.
From a mission standpoint,
everything we do must always
relate back to saving animal
lives, which in turn brings us
ever closer to achieving our often-stated goal
of “100% adoption of healthy (adoptable)
animals by 2010.” With our adoption rate for
healthy dogs at 98% and healthy cats at 99%,
I am so excited to let you know that we will
achieve that goal by the end of 2010!
So, as we look beyond 2010, what kinds of
things will MHS be doing? Most importantly,
we will be continuing to focus on eradicating the root causes of companion animal
homelessness through a myriad of proactive,
preventive programs aimed at keeping animals
in their homes. Continuing to expand our lowcost sterilization program will be a key component of that effort, as will the implementation of new programs designed to increase
the number of stray animals returned to their
owners, and new and innovative approaches
to adoption programs.
This all leads to the development of what
we are referring to as the “Healthy Pet Community” initiative, which will create synergistic
partnerships with all stakeholders within a
given locale for the mutual benefit of the animals and the public. By engaging a community
to embrace this concept, the needs of the animals will be met, not only by animal-welfare
organizations, and animal care and control
agencies, but by the residents of the community, as well – all the while enriching and
promoting a higher quality of life for everyone
within the community and creating communi-

ties which value, respect and
care for animals.
While a wide variety of
components need to be addressed in order for a municipality to be designated as
a “healthy pet community,”
at the core are the following
basic concepts:
• Taking an active approach
in reducing animal overpopulation through incentivized
licensing and spay/neuter
programs
• Working to reunite lost
pets with their families
• Promoting mandatory
identification for both dogs
and cats
• Providing public education on animal
issues
• Transparency of statistics and consistency
in measuring results
• Providing for a “Safe Haven” sheltering
facility for the community’s lost or surrendered animals
Other considerations would include but not
be limited to:
• Having sufficient pet-friendly housing
options based on the total number of area
residents
• Pet-friendly parks and recreation, including dog parks
• Traditional and specialized veterinary
care, including low-cost options for essential
services such as sterilization, vaccinations and
microchipping
• Sufficient opportunities for residents to
obtain animal grooming, day-care, boarding
services, etc.
These are exciting times at MHS, and we
continue to enlist your support as we embark
on our new strategic path. There is something
for everyone to do – just remember, “Somebody Here Needs You.”

Because
of
You …
The lives of hundreds of special-needs animals in MHS’ care
have been dramatically transformed through your support. On their behalf, THANK YOU!
… I don’t have to live in a junkyard anymore –
By just 6 month old, Caboo had already
experienced enough suffering for a lifetime.
Born on the streets, the young shepherd/
rottweiler mix lived in a junkyard, where
he barely survived on scraps of food and in
whatever dilapidated shelter he could find.
Life certainly wasn’t grand for this pup – but
the situation became dire when Caboo lost
most of his front leg, likely after being hit by
a train traveling along the tracks adjacent to
the junkyard.
He suffered alone, with no one to hear his
cries. Few people wandered the junkyard,
6
www.michiganhumane.org
and even fewer noticed Caboo. One day, a
kind passerby saw the excruciating wound
and called the Michigan Humane Society for
help. MHS responders arrived quickly and
transported Caboo to the Detroit Center
for Animal Care for medical treatment.
The veterinary team determined that the
remaining part of Caboo’s leg would need to
be amputated. Following the life-saving surgery, Caboo recovered for several weeks in
foster care with a member of MHS’ Cruelty
Investigation and Rescue team. There, he
learned the simple pleasures of walking on a
Caboo
leash and playing fetch.
By early April, Caboo had blossomed
into a healthy puppy, and he soon found a
forever home with Lisa Carleton of Livonia.
His once sterile life was completely transformed. This former junkyard pup now enjoys playing with toys, making friends with
the neighbor dogs, taking puppy-training
classes and spending lots of time cuddling
with his new mom.
“Caboo is a great dog who seems to be as
happy here as I am to have him!” Carleton
says.
Happy Tails
… I received the
medical care
I needed to
treat my painful
burns – Sally
Last summer, a young stray cat was
brought to the MHS Detroit Center for
Animal Care with life-threatening injuries.
Sally had experienced chemical burns from
a hot liquid searing much of her small body,
including a large area along her spine, and
most of her ears. Unfortunately, there were
no witnesses to tell of her ordeal and whether
the injuries were inflicted intentionally while
she was out on the streets.
Sally required a month of intensive medical care and then additional time in foster
care with an MHS veterinarian. Despite the
excruciating pain she was in, she charmed everyone with her affectionate personality and
delicate “kitty kisses” as if to say, “Thank
you,” to the staff treating her wounds and
providing a safe haven.
In November, once she had fully healed,
Sally found her forever home with Mike
Gary of Taylor. Today, she’s living a healthy,
happy life with someone who finds her truly
beautiful despite her rough start and perhaps
less than perfect appearance.
When she first went home, “she fit right in,”
Gary says. “She’s got all kinds of energy – she
loves to play, and she especially loves to have
her head rubbed. She curls up in bed with me
at night, we hang out in the morning – she’s
just an all-around amazing companion. I love
her so much.”
… My disability didn’t prevent me from
finding my forever home – Charley
At the Michigan Humane Society, a disability, such as blindness or hearing loss, doesn’t
stop an animal from being adopted. Each
year, MHS helps hundreds of special-needs
animals find loving homes – animals such
as Charley, a 5-year-old beagle/Dalmatian
mix whose owners surrendered him to the
MHS Rochester Hills Center for Animal
Care. Charley is completely deaf which can,
in some cases, make dogs easy to startle
or more difficult to train. Because of this,
volunteers in MHS’ Pawsitive Start inshelter training program didn’t expect that
he’d pick up new skills as easily as the other
dogs. To their surprise, he proved to be a
star student!
In lieu of the auditory “clicker” training used to train animals, Charley learned
to respond to a flashlight and some hand
signals (and, of course, a few treats!). Within
days, he had learned to sit, “trim” his own
nails on a specially designed nail file, press
an Easy button, and other skills that his
“peers” were still trying to master. Charley proved to everyone that his disability
wouldn’t stop him from anything – and it
sure didn’t stop him from getting adopted.
When Paul and Pam Cruden of Oxford
Township visited the adoption center in
October, Charley’s sweet, gentle nature immediately caught their eye. After bringing
their current dog, Clyde, in to meet Charley,
they found he was a great match for the
whole family. The Crudens soon adjusted
to Charley’s deafness by providing him with
visual cues.
“If we’re going for a car ride, which he
loves, I’ll just show him my keys,” Paul
Cruden says. “He sees them and gets all
excited! We just don’t look at his deafness as
a disability – it’s just a part of life, and we’re
so fortunate to have him.”

MHS Takes Aim Against Puppy Mills
The Michigan Humane Society has
launched a statewide collaboration to develop legislation (preliminarily entitled the
“Puppy Protection Act”) aimed at regulating puppy mills in our state. Unlike smaller
“hobby” breeders, puppy mills house large
numbers of adult dogs in close confinement
for years, often without any meaningful human interaction, exercise, or even
adequate care. These animals are forced to
produce litter after litter of puppies until
old age, when they are sold at auction or
destroyed. Their puppies are typically sold
to pet stores or via the Internet. In fact, up
to 99% of pet stores that sell puppies buy
them from puppy mills!
While MHS does not oppose careful breeding and individual placement of
purebred dogs by responsible individuals,
we stand against the substandard conditions
and care in many large-scale commercial
dog breeding kennels. Seven states have
passed puppy mill laws within the past two
years, including close neighbors such as
Indiana and Pennsylvania.
It is important that we act now to prevent
giant dog breeding companies in these states
from relocating to Michigan. MHS is there8
fore reaching out to breeders, pet stores,
animal control agencies, veterinarians, government officials, and other concerned individuals and groups this spring to help create
strong legislation that will protect dogs and
responsible breeding while curtailing the
unacceptable practices of puppy mills.

Ask the Vet
Guarding Your Pet’s Health and Safety
Q. As he’s gotten older, my beagle has packed on a few extra pounds – about five
actually. He’s almost round, like an apple! How can I get him back to a healthy weight?
A. Your pet is not alone – pet obesity
is among the most common problems
affecting pets today. Within the MHS
veterinary practice, we estimate that
more than 25% of our furry clients are
overweight or obese, which corresponds
to the national trend. Certain breeds of
dogs (including beagles) and cats are
genetically prone to putting on weight
more efficiently.
Also, pets – like people – tend to gain
weight as they age. The problem, simply
put, is that an overweight animal is eating
more calories than his body needs based
on his activity level and metabolism.
Quite often, we are part of the problem
if we demonstrate our affection for our
pets with excessive or inappropriate food
items.
Pet obesity, defined as the animal
weighing 20% more than his ideal weight,
can affect his comfort, quality of life and
longevity. Excessive weight increases a
pet’s risk of serious health problems,
including degenerative joint disease,
diabetes, heart and respiratory diseases,
and many types of cancer. Obesity also
can increase the risk of anesthesia and
surgery complications.
You can quickly assess your pet’s
weight with a three-step check: As you
place both thumbs on your pet’s backbone
and run your fingers along his rib cage,
does the skin easily move back and forth
over the ribs, and can you easily feel, but
not see, the ribs? Does your pet have a
discernable “waist” when viewed from
above? Finally, does his abdomen have a
slightly “tucked-in” appearance from the
side?
An apple shape, as you described,
clearly indicates a weight problem. So,
what’s the best way to start to a weightreduction regimen for your pet? With a
visit to your veterinarian.
Your pet should first be evaluated for
any potential underlying conditions,
such as Cushing’s disease, diabetes or
hypothyroidism, which could explain the
weight gain. Once medical issues are ruled
out, your veterinarian can tailor a weight-
lost plan, based on calorie reduction and
age-appropriate, regular exercise, for your
pet. A reduced-calorie food may also be
recommended in some cases.
Remember, obesity develops over
time, and your pet’s diet and activity
levels should likewise change gradually.
Even though excess weight is unhealthy,
sudden caloric restriction isn’t good for
pets. For example, in cats, it can result in
a potentially fatal condition called fatty
liver.
Pets should be fed a well-balanced,
veterinarian-approved food with limited
low-calorie treats. Can’t resist those big
brown eyes? Try offering a few small
carrots. Better yet, treat your furry friend
by engaging him in a healthy activity,
such as a walk or throwing a ball, at least
three times a week.
It’s important for all family members
to be on the same page when it comes
to feeding and giving treats to your pet.
Following the gradual and appropriate
dietary and activity changes recommended
by your veterinarian will result in your
pet having a happier and healthier life.

HOW MHS IS CREATING
‘HEALTHY PET COMMUNITIES’
Adoption, Lost Pet & Sterilization Programs:
Keys to Ensuring a Home for All Pets
Adoption Program Innovations
Adopting a pet from the Michigan Humane
Society has always been an exciting, memorable and worthwhile endeavor, but now it’s
become even more financially rewarding.

E
ight years ago, Michigan Humane
Society President and CEO Cal Morgan made a bold proclamation: By
2010, MHS would find homes for 100% of
its healthy (adoptable) dogs and cats. While
this might seem a lofty goal – and, indeed, it
is unprecedented for a large, open-admission
organization – with current adoption rates
at 98% for dogs and 99% for cats, MHS is
confident that it will be able to reach its goal
by year’s end while advancing additional
programs to help end animal suffering.
To make this milestone adoption goal a
reality, the Michigan Humane Society continually seeks new ways to positively impact
the lives of thousands of animals in need.
Most recently, MHS introduced a package
of new programs designed to further the
organization’s efforts in creating “Healthy
Pet Communities” – that is, a “safety net”
in which organizations and community
members collaborate in addressing the three
predominant issues in ending pet homelessness: Adoption, Lost Pets and Spay/Neuter.
As the largest animal welfare organization
in Michigan, and touching the lives of more
than 100,000 animals each year, MHS must
be at the forefront of these efforts to create a
stronger support system for animals in crisis.
“The concept of a healthy pet community
is one in which major companion animal
issues, like adoption, identification and
sterilization are accepted and widespread,
and responsibility for the well-being of our
pets is understood and embraced,” Morgan
says. “While the needs of our community are
diverse and our challenges great, the Michigan Humane Society stands on the verge of
achieving 100% adoption of healthy dogs
and cats – a tremendous victory and one
key element on the journey to ending animal
homelessness.”
Adopted pets and their new families are enjoying valuable benefits as members of the new MHS Alumni Club!
On March 29, MHS launched two exciting
adoption-based programs that add even more
value to what is already the best option available when finding a furry family member.
MHS Alumni Club:
As a prestigious alumnus of the Michigan
Humane Society, the adopted dog, cat or
other companion animal, and his or her
guardians are automatically entitled to a host
of valuable benefits at absolutely no additional cost under the new MHS Alumni Club.
The benefits include a 10% discount on
MHS veterinary center services and products
for the newly adopted pet; 10% off Camp
Bow Wow camp and in-home care (Home
Buddies) services; 10% off MHS Online
Store purchases; a subscription to MichigAnimals, and other special offers. The new pet
is eligible for these exclusive benefits for 12
months post-adoption, which can add up to
tremendous savings!

Helping Lost Pets Get Home
Losing a beloved pet is devastating, and it
can happen to even the most cautious of pet
guardians – an estimated one in three pets become lost at some point in their lives, and the
vast majority lacking any form of identification will never be reunited with their families.
That is why MHS is diligently working to
educate everyone who shares their home with
companion animals on what they can do to
maximize the chances of finding a lost pet.
Providing pets with visible ID is critical. In
addition to providing a “ticket home,” it encourages neighbors to come to your pet’s rescue quickly, before he travels far from home
– or worse, is stolen or hit by a car. Dogs and
cats (even strictly indoor cats) should wear a
collar and ID tag/license, as required in your
community, at all times.
MHS also strongly encourages dog and cat
microchipping, which provides permanent
ID should the pet’s collar or tag fall off. The
minimal cost, approximately $50, is well
worth the peace of mind. To help save lives
since only a tiny fraction of lost cats brought
to shelters are reclaimed, MHS now includes
no-cost microchipping with all of its feline
adoptions.
It’s critical to begin searching for a lost pet
right away. But one must also know where
to look – or where to take an animal they’ve
found. Helping get lost animals back home
saves lives. To that end, MHS believes it’s
crucial for people to have one centralized
location to search for their lost companions.
For the best chance of reuniting a stray pet
with his guardian, found animals should be
transported to the appropriate municipal animal control shelter or its designated sheltering organization.
In 2009, MHS launched an online tool,
dubbed the ePole, with the hope of dramatically increasing the number of lost pets who

are reunited with their families. The ePole
functions like a virtual telephone pole for
public use. Those who lose a pet, and those
who find a lost pet, can make contact, 24
hours a day. To post a lost or found pet online, or for other helpful resources, visit
www.michiganhumane.org/lost.
Spay/Neuter to Save Lives
To be effective in the long term, adoption
and lost pet efforts must, of course, be paired
with programs that get to the root of the
problem – too many homeless pets.
In March 2008, MHS launched an aggressive, low-cost feline sterilization program that
would add significant incremental impact to
the already 12,000-plus annual dog and cat
sterilization surgeries it performs through its
adoption and veterinary services. In the first
two years of the program, more than 8,000
low-cost sterilization surgeries were performed for the pets of qualifying low-income

guardians. Plans are to expand this program
to a five-days-per-week operation with a goal
to sterilize 8,000 animals annually.
Since one cat, her mate and their subsequent offspring can produce more than
300,000 homeless cats in seven years, each
of the resulting sterilizations represents the
prevented suffering of numerous innocent
lives. Not only that, it also helps animal
welfare groups place the adoptable animals
already waiting patiently for a second chance
at a loving home.
Everyone Plays a Role
While MHS takes a leadership role in the
vision and advancement of healthy pet communities, the fact is that humane organizations, individual citizens and local governments must work collaboratively to make our
communities safer for the companion animals
who depend on us fully. As momentous an
achievement as it will be for MHS to reach
100% adoption of healthy animals in 2010,
this represents only part of the journey to
establishing healthy pet communities. One
thing is certain – the journey cannot continue
without your support!
How You Can Help

with the peace of mind that they now share
their home with the very best companion
available, guaranteed! And, if the adopter
feels otherwise, for any reason, they are encouraged to return the pet to MHS for a full
adoption-fee refund (within 60 days).
“We have the ability to offer such assurances because of our confidence in the
high-quality care services and investment
in each companion animal inclusive of our
matchmaking process,” says Mike Robbins,
director of marketing and communications
for MHS. “We apply extensive resources
to ensure that the animals entrusted to our
care are physically and emotionally ready to
become wonderful companions.”
Think adoption first when considering
adding a pet to your family.
Ensure that your pets are spayed/neutered and have up-to-date identification
at all times.
Stay informed and vocal about your
community’s progress on companion
animal issues. One of the best ways?

Fun for Kids
Kids, Test Your Spring Wildlife Knowledge
If you spend time outside, chances are you
will encounter some neighbors who are, well,
a little “wild!” Many kinds of wildlife share
our world, and you can keep them safer by
knowing when and how to help.
CIRCLE YOUR ANSWER,
TRUE OR FALSE, TO EACH
QUESTION BELOW:
1. It is illegal for the public to
keep wild animals, even if they are
orphaned or injured. True / False
2. Coyote sightings in your
neighborhood are always cause for
alarm. True / False
3. If you find an injured wild animal,
you should contact a licensed
rehabilitator before handling the
animal. True / False
4. When you find baby birds on the
ground, a nest of baby rabbits in the
grass, or baby deer (fawns) left alone,
they are almost always orphaned.
True / False
5. When humans and wildlife
experience conflicts, the animals
usually lose. True / False
ANSWERS
1. TRUE. Please resist handling or keeping
wild animals. Wildlife is protected by state
regulations and may only be kept by those
who are licensed as rehabilitators through the
Michigan Department of Natural Resources
(MDNR). In addition to being illegal, the
keeping of wild animals by those who are
untrained and unlicensed often results in a
poor outcome for the animal. Your safety
also is important to keep in mind; the many
dangers associated with handling wild
animals include rabies, distemper, parasites
and mange.
2. FALSE. Though more common
in wooded areas, coyotes are highly
adaptable to living close to humans and
are attracted to easy food sources, such as
pet food, unsecured trash and high rodent
populations. Although people often are
frightened when they see a coyote wander
into their area, there is generally little cause
for alarm. There have been no reported
coyote attacks on humans in Michigan’s
history. However, it is advisable to closely
monitor small dogs while they are outside,
and always keep cats indoors.
3. TRUE. If you find an injured bird or
other wild animal, contact a DNR-licensed
rehabilitator in your area before moving,
touching or otherwise handling the animal.
To locate a licensed rehabilitator in your area,
visit www.michigandnr.com/dlr.
4. FALSE. Though these baby animals may
appear abandoned or orphaned, it is normal
for many animal species to leave their young
unattended for hours at a time. For example,
mother deer leave their fawns for up to eight
hours before returning to nurse. Fawns do
not carry a scent, so by watching her young
from a distance, the mother deer helps keep
her scent from attracting predators to them.
Before intervening, contact your nearest
DNR office.
5. TRUE. Development continues to
expand into once natural areas, shrinking
animal habitats by acres at a time. This
puts a larger number of wild animals in
closer proximity to each other and to
humans. MHS recommends the use of
proper preventive measures and humane
“deterrents” whenever possible to avoid or
reduce many human/animal conflicts. To

Celebrity Chat
Celebrity Chat With Steve Yzerman
H
all of Famer Steve Yzerman is
known for his dedication and passion on the ice. But did you know
the former Detroit Red Wing also has a passion for animals?
As a star center with the Red Wings,
Yzerman carved out a spectacular 23-year
playing career that includes three Stanley
Cups – one title coming in the same year he
won a gold medal with Canada’s national
hockey team at the 2002 Winter Olympics –
and numerous awards and honors.
Yzerman, 45, joined the Red Wings in
1983 and was named captain in 1986, a title
he held for the remainder of his career. He
was a key player in the team’s success, and
when he retired in 2006, he ended his career
with a spot on the NHL’s all-time leading
scorer’s list, ranking sixth. Now vice president of the organization, he added a fourth
Stanley Cup for the 2007-08 season and a
gold medal from the 2010 Winter Olympics
(he was executive director of Canada’s men’s
hockey team) to his list of achievements.
These days, “the captain” spends much
of his time on the road with the Red Wings.
When he’s not traveling, he shares a home
with wife, Lisa, and daughters Isabella, 15,
Maria, 11, and Sophia, 10. His four-legged
family includes dogs Lulu, Stanley and
Rooney; and horses, Charlie, Joey and Mario.
The hockey legend shared the joys and lessons
pets have brought to him and his family.
The Stanley Cup goes to … the Yzerman family’s Coton de Tulears Stanley and Rooney, and Portuguese water dog Lulu.
You’ve been a leader of the Red
Wings for 27 years now. What
are the most important skills
you gained in those years, and
how might those skills translate
into helping animals? As a player,
throughout my career, I earned more and
more responsibility, and now in the organization, I have more responsibility. In order to
have a pet, you have to show responsibility.
We talk about that with the kids all the time.
We started out with one dog, then two, then
three. You have to watch out and participate
in their care, and they’ve really done that.
You can’t ignore them; you need to be home
to take care of them. You take responsibility, just as a player does. As I got older, there
was more responsibility to do the right thing,
to set the right example.
When did you realize you cared
for animals? As a boy, we always had a
dog. My parents taught me early to respect
and enjoy animals.
Was there one pet who especially
touched your life? All were special,
but I best remember George, a German
Shepard/St. Bernard mix, a big bear of a dog.
Do your kids love animals like
you do, and do they help with
their care? Absolutely, they love animals
of all kinds. They’d take in every animal out
there, to feed and keep safe, if they could.
The girls take wonderful care of them.
Do you consider pets as family
members? They’re definitely treated better
than I am! I’m expendable – the animals
aren’t!
What is the best aspect of sharing your life with pets? They brighten up a house and are always so happy, have
so much personality. When you walk in the
door, and the dogs come running, they cheer
everyone up. They’re great to have around
because they pick everyone’s spirits up. Tell us why you support MHS
and the work they do. As an animal
lover, I appreciate the effort they take to care
for all the animals. I have great appreciation
for the effort they take. My family and I
share that.
