North Shore Hematology Oncology Associates, PC was honored to
welcome U.S. Rep. Steve Israel to our Smithtown office to meet with
Dr. Vacirca and view our facility. Rep. Israel and Dr. Vacirca discussed
the many pressing issues and headwinds facing community
oncology. Topics of discussion included a permanent fix to the SGR,
340b, continued support of HR 1416, HR 800, Oncology Medical
Home, payment reform, Stark exemption and NGS reimbursement.
We understand the demands Rep. Israel has on his schedule and
both NSHOA and our patients appreciate the time spent and we look
forward to working in tandem with the Congressman on all oncology

chapter for community cancer patient advocacy. With tremendous
support from the practice, a kickoff meeting was held on November 19,
2013 at one of the NSHOA offices. In a room filled with advocates, Dr.
Jeffrey Vacirca, Michael Murray and Nicole Cardaci-Gregory from North
Shore Hematology Oncology Associates along with Rose Gerber from
CPAN spoke to the importance of care in our community oncology
clinics. Advocates were educated on the various roles that they
can undertake and the positive impact they can have on their care.

Proud Participants
North Shore Hematology Oncology Associates’
participation in the ABRAXIS CA046 clinical
research trial has led to the approval of a new
drug combination that is offering hope to people
with a deadly form of pancreatic cancer. The trial
was a Phase III Randomized Study of Weekly
ABI-007 plus Gemcitabine versus Gemcitabine
Alone in 1st Line Treatment of Patients with
Metastatic
Pancreatic
Adenocarcinoma.
Over the past decade, pancreatic cancer death rates
have been slowly increasing among Americans, in
contrast to the downward trend among other cancer
types, including lung, colon, breast, and prostate
cancers. Most pancreatic cancer patients are not
diagnosed until their cancer is already advanced,
and most do not survive longer than 1 year.
Researchers are taking up the challenge to find
new methods of prevention, early diagnosis, and
treatment for pancreatic cancer. Studies have
found that adding Abraxane (nab-paclitaxel) to a
standard chemotherapy treatment helped people
with advanced pancreatic cancer live longer.
Gemzar (gemcitabine) is the chemo drug used
most often to treat pancreatic cancer. It’s now
been shown that adding Abraxane significantly
improved survival. Researchers studied Abraxane
in 861 pancreatic cancer patients in 11 countries
by giving half of them Abraxane and Gemzar,
and half of them Gemzar alone. The rate of
survival was significantly higher in the AbrazaneGemzar group. Members of that group lived
an average 1.8 months longer than those who
received Gemzar alone. It also took an average
of 1.8 months longer for their cancer to get worse.
In addition, 35% of patients who received
Abraxane lived for more than 1 year, compared
to 22% who received Gemzar alone, and 9% who
received Abraxane lived for more than 2 years,
compared to 4% who received Gemzar alone.
Kudos to our Practice for participating in such trials!
