Although a 7 day pilgrimage will not visit all the major Canadian shrines, it will provide a unique religious experience. Shrines of Eastern Canada The provinces of Ontario and Québec are home to a number of national shrines. In addition to these sites, there are a significant number of other shrines and important religious institutions throughout this region. A pilgrimage could focus on a specific Saint: St. Brother Andre or St Katari Tekakwitha are great examples. Another important place to visit is NotreDame de Québec Basilica-Cathedral hosting the 7th Holy Door in the world - the only Holy Door outside of Europe. New York State Shrines New York has a number of national and local shrines in the state. The National Shrine of the North American Martyrs and the National Shrine of St Kateri Tekakwitha commemorate saints that lived in the US and Canada. Where to Start? If traveling by air, Toronto is Canada’s largest airport and Montréal the second largest. These two airports connect international travellers to Eastern Canada. They are the best starting points for pilgrimages arriving by air. To save on traveling time, arriving in Toronto and departing from Montréal maximizes the itinerary. For residents of the USA, starting in Buffalo and departing from Montréal maximizes the itinerary. Arrive Buffalo: Sacred Heart Shrine, Our Lady of Help, 5 to 10 Days Canada Although Canada is a large country, most of the National Shrines can be visited on a 5 day itinerary. Increasing the length of the pilgrimage allows for a more complete visit of the national shrines and a chance to visit the smaller shrines, museums, and churches. Itineraries can be developed to start in Toronto and end in Montréal (or vice-versa).
